* CriticalDissonance: Despite the movie's particularly poor reception, there are some fans who feel that the series ''needed'' to get a LighterAndSofter ending after the bleakness of the preceding films and feel that this movie accomplished that without sacrificing too much of the series's tone and themes. Some of the performances are also decently liked.

* {{Sequelitis}}: Widely agreed to be not only the worst of the original five ''Planet of the Apes'' movies, but the worst ''Apes'' movie period (aside from possibly the [[Film/PlanetOfTheApes2001 2001 remake]]). The main reasons for this are the budget being slashed to the point where everything looks incredibly cheap, and the writing clearly being pitched to a much younger audience than in the previous films (both of which may be signs that the film was being used as a trial run for the then-upcoming ''Apes'' [[Series/PlanetOfTheApes TV series]]).
* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: The budget may be smaller than the previous films and the plot may be less original, but all of the major actors (with the possible exceptions of the ones playing Aldo, Kolp, and Alma) put an impressive amount of feeling and nuance into their performances.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Virgil is sixth in the credits, but is one of the best regarded characters in the movie, for being a compassionate and reasonable OmnidisciplinaryScientist who is played by Music/PaulWilliams and is the first heroic named orangutan character in the franchise.

Trivia trope.

* ExecutiveMeddling: The original ending would have created a StableTimeLoop with the first film: Aldo would have [[WhyDontYouJustShootHim shot Caesar during their climactic showdown]] and established martial law, executing all the humans except for those who where too weak/stupid to challenge him, who became slaves. Meanwhile, at the Mutant City, Mendez and Alma are overlooking the [[Film/BeneathThePlanetOfTheApes Alpha-Omega Bomb]] and discuss Kolp's orders to [[TakingYouWithMe deploy it in the event of his death]]. They decide against it, deciding instead to preserve it as a symbol. Studio demands to appeal to a younger audience, and the nascent TV series, resulted in numerous changes to make the ending (and the film in general) more upbeat.

* AwesomeMusic: Leonard Rosenman's score is often held up as one of the film's main saving graces, and it helps that it's far more melodic than the harsh, dissonant score he came up with for ''Film/BeneathThePlanetOfTheApes''.
