* NarmCharm: [[spoiler: The Penguin's death. When Oswald, wearing pajamas, asks for a drink of ice water as his last words, falls over dead, and is ceremoniously pushed into the sewer by a six emperor penguins, acing as pallbearers, while sad and dramatic music plays in the background, it should be completely ridiculous!]] But somehow, it isn't. The scene still works, and is actually rather moving.

The scene still works, and is actually rather moving.

* NoProblemWithLicensedGames: The SegaGenesis and SuperNintendo game adaptations are actually fairly good, fun adaptations.

** Jan Hooks plays a voluptuous campaign worker. Penguin ogles her ample tush and mutters: [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar "I'd like to fill her void."]]
** One of the Penguin's molls is a red-haired "punk" woman who [[FeatherBoaConstrictor wears a large snake around her body]]....and little else.
** Female bodybuilder/pinup model Erika Andersch appears as a [[BraidsBeadsAndBuckskins sexy squaw]] who [[KnifeNut likes to throw knives]].
** And then there's the Poodle Lady, whose costume is reminiscent of that worn by Madonna for her performance at the 1990 ''MTV Movie Awards'' show.

* {{What an Idiot}}: Batman [[spoiler:reveals himself right in front of Shreck]] in an attempt to stop Selina from killing him. To which [[spoiler:Shreck]] says [[spoiler:"Bruce Wayne? Why are you dressed up as Batman?" Selina quickly points out that Shreck is a moron]].

* AlasPoorVillain After being knocked through a skylight window and nearly drowning, and then weakly emerging from the Arctic World pool burned, bleeding, and literally vomiting up toxic waste, the Penguin dies completely unrepentant, still raving about how he intends to take Batman to Hell with him. But through it all, we can't ever forget that this is someone who was forced to grow up in a cold and lonely sewer ever since he was a boy, and for whom Bruce Wayne - who as Batman is largely responsible for his death - once expressed sympathy as a fellow orphan. The moving "funeral" that a group of emperor penguins hold for the villain helps to soften the blow, too.

It should've been bad, but it somehow [[TearJerker worked]].

* {{Sequelitis}} / EvenBetterSequel: At first, when the lost merchandising and lower ticket sales cause Burton to lose the directing job for the next film. Yet these days, ''Batman Returns'' is considered by some critics to be the superior film of the franchise. It's overlooked because, compared to the other films, it's WAAAY darker. But the dialogue, acting, and overall tragic feel to the film gives it a weight and maturity that the other movies just don't have.

* CharacterDerailment: As with every ''Batman'' film of this series, Batman kills, which he ''has'' done, but very rarely since the 40s.
* CompleteMonster: The Penguin. Even Max Shreck - the sleazoid who murdered and mutilated his own business partner and has no qualms about bullying and killing women - is shocked that Penguin would even think about killing children (or at least ''his'' child, Chip).
