* CompleteMonster: [[BotanicalAbomination Lily Carnation]] is a terrifying creature that lives on an isolated island, who has struck a [[DealWithTheDevil deal]] with Baron Omatsuri to keep his "crew" alive forever in exchange for providing Lily with regular entertainment and food. Over the years, Lily and Omatsuri have engineered the shipwrecks of hundreds of crews, all of them devoured by Lily after being put through twisted "games", and their dead likenesses are then used by Lily as puppets to further populate Omatsuri's "crew". Lily gets sadistic joy from its actions, and after failing to consume an entire family [[WouldHurtAChild including small children]], it devours and takes on the forms of Luffy's friends in a twisted mockery while trying to kill him.

* HilariousInHindsight: Like Flowey in ''VideoGame/{{Undertale}}'', Lily Carnation is a seemingly cute flower who is anything but by the end of the story.

* HarsherInHindsight: Luffy suffers a HeroicBSOD when he watches helplessly as [[spoiler:all of his crewmates are eaten by Lily]]. This takes place a while before in the canon series Luffy helplessly watches as [[spoiler:all his crewmates are sent away by Kuma]].

** Not helping is the floating timeline of the movies, the endless amounts of headcanon treated as nothing less than the word of oda, and the fact we have the hindsight charecterization of over 20 years at this point.

* BrokenBase: The movie's tone split the fanbase between those who appreciate something different from the usual ''One Piece'' fare, and those that loathe it for the same. The animation style also polarized opinions.

** Additionally, there's nothing that explains [[spoiler:how Baron Omatsuri came across Lily in the first place, nor is there any significant hint of whether or not the Baron was being controlled by Lily to satiate her hunger or if he purposely joined with her to help fill in the hole of despair in his heart.]][[note]]There are hints for ''both'' scenarios, but not enough to accurately say which is the most correct.[[/note]]

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: To a degree, thanks to the movie ending almost as soon as Luffy's crew reunites with him. A big part of the villain's plan [[spoiler:is to turn the Straw Hats against each other. This would be a great opportunity to make the characters realize that while they might tick each other off, there's a reason they travel together, and they can always count on each other. Instead, they're eaten, Luffy fights the bad guy, and they're spat out. There's no reconciliation, no reaffirmation of trust, the personality conflicts that drove the movie just disappear.]]

* NightmareFuel: Fans aren't kidding when they say that this is of the darkest ''One Piece'' films produced. The movie's atmosphere is akin to that of a horror film set in the ''One Piece'' universe, rather than being another big-screen adventure like most of the other movies:
** There was one scene when Nami was speaking with one of the Baron's crewmates who suddenly became a plant and dissolved into a dead husk.
** The Straw Hats being absorbed into [[spoiler:Lily Carnation]].
** Luffy being a human pincushion of arrows trudging zombie-like while begging for his crew to return.
** Probably the worst part about the absorbing part is watching Zoro who was the last one to be absorbed. The rest of the crew appears to be unconscious but he has this anguished expression on his face as if he was completely aware what was happening and his mouth is open like he was screaming.
** At the end where [[spoiler: the flower on the Baron's shoulder becomes a giant grotesque beanstalk where the bodies of the Straw Hats are jammed in it]].
** Any time [[spoiler:the cutesy Lily flower on the Baron's shoulder cheerfully claims it's hungry or makes a biting or chewing sound because she's eating the Straw Hats and absorbing them into her.]]
** TheReveal that [[spoiler:the giant iron-like "stem" of Lily is actually made up of thousands of arrows (of despair!), mostly due to the scene being backed by an extended ScareChord and screeching violins.]]
