** On a non-legal note, Phoenix not having a driver's license. In Japan, this isn't so unusual due to the extensive rail and public transportation infrastructure there. In America--and particularly Los Angeles, which is notorious for its terrible public transport--it is very difficult to get by without a driver's license, and adds to the impression of Phoenix as somewhat hapless and goofy (since someone his age would almost always have one unless they had some impairment that made it impossible).

** ''Justice for All'' and ''Trials and Tribulations'' are significantly more difficult than the original game. The mysteries are significantly more complex, with Turnabout Memories being one of the most difficult first cases in the series. The penalties are stricter (the original game tended to penalize you 20% of your health gauge at a time), and there are several cases in which a single mistake will cause you to lose instantly.

** Maya Fey: Her sister got murdered, has been accussed of murder multiple times, got [[spoiler:kidnapped]] in ''Justice for All'' and ''Spirit of Justice'', saw the [[spoiler:murder of her mother in front of her very own eyes]] in ''Trials and Tribulations'' and yet, despite all of this, she continues to smile through and remain a cheerful GenkiGirl. This is even acknowledged InUniverse by Franziska near the end of 3-5, who expresses shock by how Maya can be so chipper despite having gone through so much.

** Depending on who you ask, Maya Fey is either an endearing and incredibly sympathetic GenkiGirl who has a great dynamic with Phoneix or a obnoxious and immature idiot who couldn't stop getting imprisoned for the life of her. The fact that she has a tendency to get imprisoned or kidnapped in ''every'' appearance she makes doesn't help her reputation.
** Franziska Von Karma tends to be the most divisive amongst the reoccurring prosecutors. Some adore her for her over the top nature, her HiddenDepths and sibling-like relationship with Edgeworth, while others find her to be a unlikable, whiny and poorly developed {{Jerkass}} who hurts people for no good reason and lacks Edgeworth's more noble and likable qualities, and her father's EvilIsCool status.
** Athena Cykes became this as soon as she debuted in ''Dual Destinies''. Some fans love her for being a main playable female defense attorney (the first since Mia Fey) and finds her to be an endearing, fun and sympathetic main character with a compelling backstory and interesting chemistry with Apollo. Others though, find her to be an unnecessary addition to an already large and bloated cast that takes away the spotlight and focus from characters that need it more (such as Apollo), on top of finding her to be an glorified plot device who acts more like an assistant than the defense attorney she is supposed to be.

** For the 3DS version of the trilogy, many typos, inaccuracies, mistranslations and continuity errors from the original English releases were corrected. Some of the major errors corrected were: Phoenix not acknowledging the events of 1-5 while talking to Franziska in 2-3, and Adrian Andrews' "co-dependency" being replaced with "dependent nature", a more correct term. ** The 2019 version of the trilogy restored the vast majority of animation frames that were missing in previous ports and completely redraws essentially all art to make it HD, which was a major source of criticism towards the iOS port and to a lesser extent, the 3DS port.[[note]]The art in the original iOS port was higher-def than the DS sprites, but looked as if someone just scanned the original hand-drawn art and made no changes to it. This was much less noticeable in the 3DS due to the smaller screen.[[/note]] It also later added other languages for the first time since the original DS releases.

* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: While the mainline entries directed by Takeshi Yamazaki (''Dual Destinies'' and ''Spirit of Justice'') aren't regarded as being ''bad'', many fans feel they are the weakest entries in the series and that they don't stack up to the titles directed by original series creator Creator/ShuTakumi, who would distance himself from the mainline series to focus more on spin-offs such as ''VideoGame/ProfessorLaytonVsPhoenixWrightAceAttorney'' and ''VisualNovel/TheGreatAceAttorney'', which have been well received by fans. Ironically, this is despite the fact that Yamazaki had previously directed and wrote the acclaimed ''Investigations'' duology, while Takumi had directed ''VideoGame/ApolloJusticeAceAttorney'', which is arguably the most [[BrokenBase divisive title]] in the franchise.

* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: Starting with ''VideoGame/ProfessorLaytonVsAceAttorney'', Shu Takumi (the series creator and director of the numbered titles up to that point) and Takeshi Yamazaki (the director for the ''VisualNovel/AceAttorneyInvestigationsMilesEdgeworth'' series) switched roles, with Yamazaki going on to direct the main-series games and Takumi working on spinoff games like the ''VisualNovel/TheGreatAceAttorney'' spinoff series. This, combined with the main series getting easily localized by virtue of being numbered titles and the latter formerly falling into NoExportForYou before ''The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles'' [[AuthorsSavingThrow was announced]], angered the faction of fans who pass off Yamazaki's games as inferior [[BTeamSequel B-Team Sequels]] and believe that Takumi as series creator is the only one who can do it.
