The period from 1966 to 1990 was considered the "[[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfAnimation Golden Age of]] [[SaturdayMorningCartoon Saturday Morning Cartoon]]" where all television networks -- by all, we mean three: Creator/{{NBC}}, Creator/{{ABC}} and Creator/{{CBS}} -- made conscious decisions devoting their weekend blocks to showing animated programs targeted for children during the mornings. Though as time went on, [[AmericanSeries live-action kids' shows as well as other family-friendly media]] began taking over the airwaves, meaning ratings started to go down and the future of established Saturday morning cartoons became uncertain. Eventually, animated studios and network programmers fell into a pattern of reusing popular formulas, some taking characters from their most popular shows and pairing them together in order to make them "perform" or "compete" much like how their live-action counterparts in {{Sitcom}}s and {{Soap Opera}}s did on UsefulNotes/PrimeTime shows.

In 1979, television executive and producer Fred Silverman turned President and CEO of Creator/{{NBC}} brought his daughter a plush Smurf doll from a local toy shop during a network trip to Aspen, Colorado. Upon his return, Silverman contacted cofounder Joseph Barbera of [[Creator/HannaBarbera Hanna-Barbera Productions]], charging him on acquiring the rights to the Smurfs, guaranteeing the studio an on-air commitment if they could make an animated cartoon series around the Belgian [[ComicBook/TheSmurfs comics]]. Doing as he was told, Barbera began a two-year trip to the television screen, veering the Smurfs far from Pierre "Peyo" Culliford's 1958 creation before coming back to a familiar form.

Even though the contract Peyo had with Creator/{{NBC}}, S.E.P.P. (La Société d'Edition, de Presse et de Publicité) and [[Creator/HannaBarbera Hanna-Barbera Productions]] gave him the power to veto any changes made to his creation, Creator/HannaBarbera had to make changes to the comics before making them into episodes. They included changing [[ZombieApocalypse 'The Black Smurfs']] from "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Les Schtroumpfs noirs]]" to purple as well as changing the 'Swoofs', which are basically the Smurfs in disguise to green from the reddish orange skin tone from "Le Cosmoschtroumpf" ("The Astrosmurf"). Hanna-Barbera also changed Brainy from being whacked on the head with a blunt object as punishment in the printed stories to being physically thrown out of the Smurf Village in the cartoon, which was later carried into the [[Film/TheSmurfs 2011 movie]], in fear of young viewers hitting those they despise on the head.

The ''Smurfs'' animated series finally debuted on Saturday morning of September 12, 1981, capturing forty two percent of the audience, thus making it the most highly rated children's program in more than eight years, not to mention the highest rated program on NBC in roughly two decades. ''Smurfs'' even outperformed a number of successful UsefulNotes/{{prime time}} shows in terms of viewing percentages. In terms of voices, Creator/DonMessick, Creator/FrankWelker, Creator/JuneForay, Creator/PaulWinchell, Creator/MichaelBell, Creator/AlanYoung, Creator/HamiltonCamp, and Creator/CharlieAdler, among others provided their vocal talents to the show.

While many of Peyo's original ''[[ComicBook/TheSmurfs Smurfs]]'' comics such as "L'Apprenti Schtroumpf" ("The Smurf Apprentice"), "Les Schtroumpfs et le Cracoucass" ("The Smurfs and the Howlibird") and "Le Schtroumpfissme" ("King Smurf") were adapted for the first season, Hanna-Barbera reached a point where new characters need to be introduced as well as creating original stories for the series. Johan and Pirlouit, called Peewit in English, made their television debut in the second season, becoming recurring characters as well as Bigmouth, who only made one appearance in the comics. Gargamel, Azrael, Princess Savina, the King, Dame Barbra and Homnibus made their animated appearances from the comics as well. Other allies of the Smurfs created specifically for the animated series include [[WideEyedIdealist Prince-turned-King Gerard]], [[OurFairiesAreDifferent the Pussywillow Pixies]], [[OurGeniesAreDifferent Gourdy]], [[OurMermaidsAreDifferent Marina]], [[SlapSlapKiss Selwyn and Tallulah]] just to name a few. Besides additional allies, supplementary antagonists such as [[MeaningfulName Chlorhydris]], Gargamel's godfather [[BeardOfEvil Lord Balthazar]] as well as [[IronicName Scruple]], Gargamel's apprentice starting from around season six appeared as adversaries to the Smurfs.

In the AnimatedAdaptation, however, their first meeting with Gargamel happened about ten years prior to the present time period, as revealed in "Gargamel's Time Trip", when Gargamel sought to capture a Smurf to finish his sorcerer's school project so that he could graduate.

* BeardOfEvil: Gargamel attempted to grow his own through the use of a magic potion in the episode "Symbols Of Wisdom", desiring to be like the evil wizards with beards that he admired. The only problem, though, was that his beard grew so long that it ended up reaching to the Smurf Village.
** Gargamel did sport a fake BeardOfEvil when he was masquerading as the dream date wizard Harlequin in order to get his hands on Hogatha's "magic whistle", which was really her bird call. However, during a kiss, the fake beard attached itself to Hogatha's face, revealing her dream date to be Gargamel, yet Hogatha doesn't notice it until after Gargamel is gone when she looks at herself in the mirror and says, "I have charm, I have beauty, I have a beard...A BEARD?!?"
* BeastlyBloodsports: In "Smurf Me No Flowers", Lazy Smurf, [[MistakenForDying who thinks he's dying]], decides to make one of the last things he does before he passes away "taming a wild beast", which means participating in a bull fight. The Smurfs, fearing for Lazy's safety, swap out a harmless cow disguised as a bull and make it look like it was charging at him.
* BeautyContest: There was a gender-flipped version called the Mr. Smurf Contest in the episode of the same name, where the male Smurfs competed to be the one who would take Smurfette to the Harvest Ball as her escort. As it turned out, Smurfette couldn't decide which of the contestants would be the winner, so she judged all contestants to be the winners. Also, one of the contestants was Gargamel, who had disguised himself as a Smurf, but as his disguise wore off, he ended up being no bigger than a Smurf and thus was cast out of the village.
** And there was also a Miss Dark Ages Beauty Show in "The Golden Smurf Award", which ironically consisted of old hags competing for being the "most beautiful" of them all, and for which Hogatha was attempting to make herself beautiful by using Smurfs as part of her beauty regimen.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor:
** In "The Tallest Smurf," Farmer absentmindedly wishes he could make Slouchy[[note]]who was being made fun of for being shorter than the Smurflings[[/note]] a happier Smurlfing . . . within earshot of Gourdy. As a result, he and the rest of the Smurfs, minus Slouchy who wished to be the tallest Smurf, woke up the next morning the size of ants.
** This could also apply to the magic egg the Smurfs found, with the example of Papa Smurf saying to the three Papa Smurf impersonators, "If you're me, then I'm a monkey's uncle," while striking the egg...and then becoming a monkey!
** Sassette's wish to the [[BlankBook magical blank book]] in "Bookworm Smurf" that she never wants to see another book again causes all the books in the world to vanish.
** Smurfette's BlessedWithSuck ability of turning whatever she touches into candy in "Smurfette's Sweet Tooth".
** In "Paradise Smurfed", the three Smurfs in Bacchus' paradise wished for some excitement. They got more than they bargained for when Bacchus uses his powers to turn things in his paradise into death traps for the Smurfs during a game of "hide-and-hunt".

* BedtimeBrainwashing: In "Papa's Flying Bed", Papa Smurf's new bed causes whoever sleeps in it to be transported to wherever it is they are dreaming about. After the bed takes Papa Smurf, Brainy, Clumsy, and Baby to a pirate ship and then a child's bedroom with toys, it ends up traveling to Gargamel's lair when Clumsy dreams of being taken there. Papa Smurf whispers in Clumsy's ear to dream about his home in the Smurf Village with his beautiful rock collection, and soon enough Clumsy's dreaming takes them away from Gargamel before he gets their hands on them and straight into Clumsy's house.
* BellyFlopCrushing: Accidentally done by Bigmouth in the episode "Bigmouth Smurf" when he was made to believe that he was a giant Smurf, though fortunately the only victims were Smurf houses.
* BerserkButton: In "Bigmouth's Friend", the destruction of Clockwork Smurf becomes this for Bigmouth.
* BewitchedAmphibians: The cartoon show had a few princes turned into frogs, twice by sorcerers and once by Hogatha the witch. One prince-turned-frog was Prince Theodore, whose human appearance was switched with that of a frog by Morlock the wizard who sought to control the prince's kingdom by using the frog-in-prince-form as his lackey.
** In "The Good, The Bad, And The Smurfy", a king and his court were turned into frogs by a treacherous sorcerer, whom himself was turned into a frog by Papa Smurf.
** In an alternate ending for "The Lure Of The Orb" which was shown in markets outside the United States, Papa Smurf altered Jokey's surprise so that it turned Allura into a frog.

* BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce: In "Gingerbread Smurfs", Brainy has Clumsy add volcanic lava juice to his recipe for making gingerbread cookies to make them really spicy. It is so powerful that it blows up the kitchen when it is added.
* BlessedWithSuck: In one episode, Smurfette is given a Midas touch power that enables her to turn whatever she touches into candy, but as in the case of King Midas [[TakenForGranite turning his daughter into gold]], Smurfette ends up turning Brainy into a Smurf sculpture of candy.
* BlindedByTheLight: In the episode "Now You Smurf 'Em, Now You Don't", Papa Smurf used light shone through a magnifying lens into a magic crystal ball to blind the trolls digging tunnels underneath the Smurf Village to capture the Smurfs.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Of three of the female Smurfs in this series: Smurfette (blonde), Clockwork Smurfette (brunette), Sassette (redhead)
* BookshelfDominoes: In "Unsound Smurfs", the Smurflings cause this to happen when they look through the Noisemaker's sounds to find the one that would be sufficient enough to break the magical sound barrier cast over the entire Smurf Village.

* BouquetToss: In the special "Smurfily Ever After", after Smurfette spends most of the episode dreaming of who would be the perfect Smurf to marry and not finding the right one among her prospects, she ends up being the one who catches the bouquet that Laconia tosses after her wedding to her husband Woody, signifying that she's going to be the next one to marry someday. (As you might expect, she quickly gets a lot of attention from the other Smurfs right there.)

* BreakingTheFourthWall: Grandpa Smurf does this in "Lost Smurf" when he plants one of Jokey's "surprises" near the door of the prison inside Castle Captor for him and Nanny Smurf to escape.
** Jokey also does this in the cartoon show version of "King Smurf" when he gets sent to jail for pulling his usual prank on Brainy, who at the time was King Smurf.

* BrokenAesop: "A Hug For Grouchy" encourages the idea of sharing one's feelings with others...by having others violate your own feelings when it comes to being touched! And perhaps the worst part is that Papa Smurf even encourages it!
* BrokenMasquerade: Know that beautiful paradise world of Bacchus that Lazy, Brainy, and Greedy stepped into in "Paradise Smurfed"? Well, a globe from an Atlas statue breaks a hole in a wall and reveals a dark foreboding castle behind it, where Bacchus' chef prepares his master's meals, and the meal for the day is souffle a la Smurf! Fortunately, this is AllJustADream.
** Also the world of the Swoofs in "Dreamy's Pen Pals", since the Smurfs decided to turn the entire Smurf Village into that by using stage props to cover over the Smurf houses. Gargamel's appearance almost blows the whole masquerade, but the spell for turning Smurfs into Swoofs which Brainy had cut corners in completing does the job when the Swoofs turn back into Smurfs prematurely.
* BubbleGun: The Wartmongers had this type of weapon.
* BucketBoobyTrap: Scruple sets one up for his master Gargamel in the episode "The Most Popular Smurf".
* CantTieHisTie: Clumsy has a few fumbles tying his tie in the episode "The Golden Smurf Award".
* CardboardPrison: The holding cell Clumsy is put into in "The Smurfy Verdict" has a barred door that keeps falling off its hinges. But then, Clumsy doesn't even make any attempt to escape.
* CassandraTruth: In "The Sky Is Smurfing", Scaredy comes back with Hefty after investigating what's causing Papa Smurf's allergy, telling the Smurfs, "The sky is smurfing", but none of his fellow Smurfs believe him, and Hefty is too dazed with a bump on his head to even help trying to confirm what Scaredy is saying. It isn't until Mount St. Smurf erupts that Brainy and Hefty realize that Scaredy was right, with Brainy yelling, "The sky is smurfing! The sky is smurfing!"
** In "Papa's Wedding Day", the Smurfs overhear Flowerbell saying to herself that getting Papa Smurf to marry her is part of her plan to bring the wisest Smurf to Lord Balthazar and promptly try to warn Papa Smurf not to marry her. Papa Smurf refuses to listen to his little Smurfs' warnings, so the Smurfs resort to trying to sabotage parts of the wedding to dissuade Papa Smurf from marrying Flowerbell, to no avail.
* CatsAreMagic: In "My Smurfy Valentine", Azrael has the power to lead Chlorhydris through the Forest of Poison Thorns in order to get to a special magical wishing well because he was born with royal blood in his veins. Surprisingly, this turns out to be true, as in Season 9's "Mummy Dearest", the time-lost Smurfs meet his distant ancestor, the cat pharaoh Azra.
* CaughtOnTape: The episode "Memory Melons" had Selwyn trying to present an "I love you" message to his wife Tallulah using a magical melon that captures whatever a person speaks into it. However, the melon captures Selwyn speaking about needing to get rid of "that old bag of wind" (referring to a literal bag of wind) and Tallulah thinks that he's talking about her.
* CheesyMoon: The Man In The Moon in the episode of the same name actually has cheese on the moon which Greedy helps himself to.
* ChekhovsGun:
** One of the Game Master's rules of his game in "The Grouchiest Game In Town" is that "wizard takes all". This rule ends up defeating him later on when Grouchy uses Papa Smurf, who is both a Smurf and a wizard, to remove all of the Game Master's pieces from the board, thus freeing everybody from being trapped as the Game Master's game pieces.

* DealWithTheDevil: In "Harmony Steals The Show", Harmony signs a contract that allows him to use Ghostwriter's original symphony as his own in exchange for being his eternal performer at his spectral nightclub. Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs help Harmony break the contract by revealing before the judge and jury that Ghostwriter's "original symphony" was actually musical pieces stolen from other musicians.
** In "Smurfette's Dancing Shoes", Smurfette receives a pair of shoes that enables her to dance gracefully, but the imp who gave her the shoes says now she must marry him. Papa Smurf gets her out of that situation by the end of the episode by making the magic shoes appear on the imp and having him dance uncontrollably.

* DelayedExplosion: In the AnimatedAdaptation of "The Fake Smurf", Hogatha attempts to destroy the Smurfs by sabotaging the bridge with Jokey's "surprises", but instead of the "surprises" going off when she pulled the trigger at the moment the Smurfs were crossing the bridge, they ended up going off when Hogatha herself started crossing the bridge.
* DeliberatelyMonochrome: In "The Color Smurfy", the world becomes black-and-white with the only color existing being Smurf blue when the Smurflings accidentally destroy Spectra's color wheel. The only place where color still exists is the Rainbow Pool, which the Smurfs must go to in order to get liquid light so they could restore Spectra.
* DelusionsOfDoghood: Papa Smurf and Gargamel were both given magical delusions of doghood in an episode.

* DietEpisode: The episode "Gormandizing Greedy" is about putting Greedy on a diet after the Smurfs find out he has a weight problem.

** Laconia, in 1984's "Stop and Smurf the Roses." Laconia entered her death-like sleep after the evil Chlorhydris – annoyed that the beautiful wood elf even exists – kills off all the flowers, Laconia's life source. Fortunately, Papa Smurf is able to reverse the spell and foil Chlorhydris' plans.
** The 1986 episode "Smurfquest": Temporarily for Grandpa Smurf, when he passes out just as elements to restore the Smurf's Long Life Stone (their own life source) are being placed in the Stone's box. Grandpa revives after the stone goes through its restoration cycle; the other Smurfs' youths (as they, too, had aged into elderly Smurfs) are restored as well.
* DisposableFiancee: Lady Jasmine in "The Prince And The Hopper", whom Prince Theodore believes is his true love that he's going to marry, who turns out to be a Gold Digger who's only marrying him for his wealth. The wedding eventually gets called off when, at the ceremony, she ends up kissing a frog who's been turned into a copy of the prince who gets turned back into a frog when Smurfette kisses the real prince who was turned into a frog and turns him back into a prince.
* DodgyToupee: Gargamel wears a wig on his date with Evelyn the enchantress which immediately falls off his head as he enters her house, though his date doesn't really notice, in the episode "Gargamel's Sweetheart".
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: In "A Hug For Grouchy", Grouchy running away from Smurfs who were stalking him and pouncing on him to give him a hug on Hug-A-Smurf Day, whether he wanted one or not, could be construed as an allegory for rape, albeit a very loose one.
* DogFoodDiet: In the episode "The Horn Of Plenty", Gargamel tries to eat Azrael's cat food when there's hardly any food left in his house.

* {{Druid}}: A group of druids are trapped in a haunted tree in "The Smurfs' Time Capsule", and its leader emerges from it to set them free in order to plunge the world in eternal darkness. Note, however, that they are not actually called "druids".
* {{Duck}}: In the episode "Baby's Enchanted Didey", Gargamel decides to swear off chasing after Smurfs to take on a new hobby -- bird watching. When he starts bird watching, he yells to Azrael "duck!" and ducks out of the way as a duck flies very low.
* EarlyPersonalitySigns: All Smurf infants' first words are said to hint at their adult personalities to come. For instance, Brainy's was "Gobbledygook", which hints at his [[SesquipedalianLoquaciousness saying big words]], Farmer's was "fertiliser", and Jokey's was "surprise" (hinting at his love to surprise people with exploding gifts). Baby's first word turns out to be [[spoiler: "Gargamel"]], which Papa Smurf takes as a sign that [[spoiler: he recognises his enemy and will therefore grow to be a great leader]].

** In "The Blue Plague", the camera zooms into Gargamel's mouth as he laughs at the end of his version of "Mean, Sour, Crafty, And Cruel" from ''WesternAnimation/YogisFirstChristmas''.
* EdibleTreasure: The episode "Spelunking Smurfs" had the Smurfs discovering a treasure trove of frozen food hidden in a cave along with a diamond and a frozen ogre who stole both the food and the diamond. The Smurfs used Vanity's mirrors to reflect the sunlight unto the diamond so that the food would be unfrozen, but it also unfroze the ogre, who tried to stop the Smurfs from taking his food. When Papa Smurf reminded him of what the diamond did to him the last time he was selfish, the ogre allowed them to take what they needed along with the diamond. Soon after, Gargamel caught the Smurfs and took the diamond from the Smurfs, and because of his selfish heart, the diamond sealed up Gargamel in ice.
* ElevatorFailure: In "Skyscraper Smurfs", Brainy and Hefty both board an elevator of the smurfominium that Handy and Architect both had built together, but as they go up, the elevator stalls, and the control lever snaps off. Brainy panics and bangs on the door, wanting to get out. Hefty tries to calm his friend down, saying that somebody will come along and help them. Brainy decides to pass the time reading the books he was transporting on the elevator, which makes Hefty panic and bang on the door. Over time, Hefty develops claustrophobia and breaks out of the elevator window, jumping over to the branch of a nearby tree to escape.
* EmbarrassinglyPainfulSunburn: Brainy turns bright red and has to be wrapped in swaddling cloths when he gets sunburn in "Mummy Dearest".
* EmptySwimmingPoolDive: Brainy makes a dive into an empty river bed in the episode "The Patchwork Bear".
* EndlessDaytime: In "Queen Smurfette", Father Time fails to bring the close of the day on Smurfette's birthday, resulting in the day never ending until Papa Smurf brings it to Father Time's attention.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Lord Balthazar tends to employ methods in gaining what he wants that would give his godson Gargamel some pause in emulating.
* EverybodyMustGetStoned: Gargamel's Daredevil Dust, which makes the Smurfs act so reckless (not to mention so high) in the episode "Reckless Smurfs". Also the Forget Me Flowers in "Forget Me Smurfs" which made the Smurfs who sniffed the flowers to forget about everything (and also made them look and act stoned). And lastly the Giggle Glitter from "The Last Laugh" that made whoever was exposed to it laugh uncontrollably.
* EveryoneHatesFruitCakes: In "The Master Smurf", Greedy has the whole village of Smurfs under the thrall of his magical crown build a monument to himself made entirely of fruitcake, which Greedy seems to love. By the end of the episode, after the monument topples and Greedy is left with more fruitcake than he can stomach, Papa Smurf says that they'll share it with their friends during the holidays.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: Averted in "It Came From Outer Smurf", as a crystal from the visiting alien's spaceship causes the watermill's wheel to spin out of control at high speeds when it was used as the wheel's axle pin.
* EverythingsLouderWithBagpipes: The bagpipes come in handy in the Season 9 episode "Phantom Bagpiper", as Smoogle imitates its sound in order to make Smurfette's horse run faster in a horse race against the greedy Frugal [=McDougal=].
* EvilAunt: Lady Imperia, the aunt of Prince Gerard, who in "The Clockwork Smurf" attempts to be crowned queen in her nephew's place.
* EvilChancellor: Sir Leopold, Prime Minister to his nephew King Gerard. He keeps advising against Gerard helping the poor and, when Gerard is distracted by Clockwork Smurf's illness, ruins the kingdom.
* TheEvilPrince: Most of King Gerard's family seems to be this, save his cousin Savina. His aunt Imperia, uncle Leopold, and cousin Malcolm all plot to usurp the kingdom.

* TheFamine: The main characters go through a famine at least twice in the series. Once, in "Spelunking Smurfs", it came because of a drought, and the Smurfs sought after food in the forest until they found a cave with frozen food and a frozen ogre guarding it. Another time, in "The Horn Of Plenty", Mother Nature's bad broken wand causes the Smurfs' crops to wither and die right at harvest time, causing them to suffer penury during winter until they discover a land where its citizens are fed by a musical instrument called the Horn of Plenty.

The Smurflings help rescue Vanity by making the Creepodile feast on a gourd dressed up in royal clothes instead.
** In the Season 9 episode "Gnoman Holiday", Julius Geezer has his victims be thrown into the coliseum to deal with the Felions.

There's also the Feast Of Plenty, which is the closest thing they have to Thanksgiving, the Firefly Festival, in which a Smurf must go to the Great Swamp to light a torch with the Foxfire to light up a firefly pinata before the end of the second day, and the infamous Hug-A-Smurf Day which [[HatesBeingTouched Grouchy hates]]. Of course, there's every Smurf's least favorite holiday, Unhappiness Day, where Un{{happiness Is Mandatory}} for a full day.
* FiremansSafetyNet: This comes into play in "Skyscraper Smurfs", when the Smurfs have to jump out of the burning smurfominium and Papa Smurf with a few other Smurfs come to their rescue.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: In season 9, the Smurfs get stuck travelling through time, stopping at different time periods as they attempt to get back home. The series ended [[CutShort before they could]].
* FishOutOfWater: Simon the boy giant from "The Littlest Giant". Also the purple smelly hatchling from "Born Rotten".
* FlatJoy: In "The Golden Smurf Award", when Brainy nominates himself as the winner of the titular award in order to break a 98-way tie after his friend Clumsy was unable to cast a vote to break the tie, every Smurf groans, and Vanity flatly says, "I'm so happy for you."
* FloatingInABubble: Scaredy Smurf in one episode borrowed a wand from a water sprite that can create bubbles even around himself as protection. Unfortunately, he ended up dropping the wand and Gargamel used it to trap Scaredy in a bubble until the other Smurfs got the wand out of Gargamel's hands and trapped him and his cat inside a bubble.
* FloorboardFailure: The floors in Architect Smurf's smurfominium are prone to weakness in the episode "Skyscraper Smurfs".
* FlowerFromTheMountaintop: This was the plot of a TV episode; subverted at the end when the [[BigfootSasquatchAndYeti Abominable Snowman]] reveals that there are actually hundreds of the flowers growing up there.
* FluffyCloudHeaven: The Land of Myth, although not an afterlife, resembles this.

* FoodAsBribe: In Smurfette's origin episode, Smurfette tempted Greedy with a scrumptious smurfberry cake into opening the village dam gate so she could flood the village back before she was changed into a real Smurf.
* FoodEnd: The episode "Greedy And The Porridge Pot" ends with the entire village covered in porridge, and Brainy has to clean it up because he caused the mess by misusing the episode's magic porridge pot. Naturally, Greedy decides to help out, because he hasn't had his breakfast yet.

* FurBikini: Tracker Smurf wears fur shorts at the end of the episode "S-Shivering S-Smurfs" when he finds out how warm the day is going to be after the Smurfs have endured through a snowstorm.

* GemEncrusted: Vanity in the episode "The Big Nose Dilemma" gets a new nose that looks like a Faberge egg sitting on his face.
* GenderBender: The cartoon version of "The Fake Smurf" has Hogatha switching genders when she becomes a Smurf. She doesn't even try to disguise her voice to pretend that she's supposed to be a male, and none of the Smurfs seem to notice that she doesn't sound anything like a male.
* GenderEqualsBreed: Hinted at in a painting that Painter Smurf had created of Papa Smurf and his prospective bride Flowerbell the woodnymph in the episode "Papa's Wedding Day", with their offspring being male Smurfs. Of course, given how the painting depicted the couple, it was done to dissuade Papa Smurf from marrying Flowerbell, as the other Smurfs knew the whole thing was a setup.
* GenderNeutralWriting: This has crept into the episodes to keep Baby Smurf's gender identity anonymous — although at one instance Papa Smurf does refer to Baby Smurf as a "he".
* GetBackToTheFuture: How the time-traveling season started with the episodes "The Smurfs That Time Forgot", "Lost In The Ages", and "Cave Smurfs".
* GettingSmiliesPaintedOnYourSoul: The Well Wizard in the episode "Swapping Smurfs" turned Smurfs who went down to the bottom of the well into very happy zombies, all for the purpose of getting one of Papa Smurf's spellbooks so that the wizard could break the spell that kept him trapped in the well.
** Given that the very happy Smurfs also have the floppy part of their hats standing straight, one must wonder [[SomethingElseAlsoRises what the Well Wizard actually did with the Smurfs]] to make them appear that way.
* GettingTheBoot: On the TV series, Brainy gets tossed out of the village at least OnceAnEpisode. As mentioned before, this was done as a "safer" alternative to what happened in the original comics, where he was hit on the head with a mallet, although it would take more violence to toss him far enough to land on the outskirts of the village.

* GivingThemTheStrip: In the episode "Hefty's Heart", Gargamel has Papa Smurf and four other Smurfs stuck to the table with glue, and then proceeds to pull Papa Smurf off the table so that he could give him a shave when Hefty, who was affected by the HatePlague, breaks free of the plague's control on him and rescues Papa Smurf and the four other Smurfs from Gargamel, pulling the Smurfs still on the table out of their pants so that they could flee back to the village. By the episode's end, the four Smurfs are wearing barrels and waiting for Tailor to finish up with their new pants.
* GladiatorGames: In the episode "Gnoman Holiday", Brainy is forced to fight a muscular brute named Biggus in order to keep Smurfette from marrying Julius Geezer's son Nerdo during their time travels.
* TheGlassesGottaGo: In "Symbols Of Wisdom", Brainy thinks that the reason Papa Smurf gets more respect than him is that Papa Smurf doesn't wear glasses, so Brainy tries to go about his daily business not wearing any glasses -- only to stumble into things like Painter's painting-in-progress of Smurfette.
* GlassShatteringSound: Harmony's playing the triangle at a pitch that makes Brainy's glasses crack in "Smurphony In 'C'", and Denisa's scream that makes the vials in Gargamel's hovel shatter in "Denisa's Greedy Doll".
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: The druid leader in "The Smurfs' Time Capsule", and Nemesis.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: The titular smurf-colored glasses from the episode of the same name makes the Smurfs who wear them see all kinds of creatures, even dangerous ones, to be cute, handsome, and harmless. When Bigmouth wears them, though, it gives him MeatOVision.
* GoingCommando: Averted at least in one episode where Clumsy in a play draws his sword and his pants fall down. For the most part, though, it's only implied that the male Smurfs don't wear any underpants.

** Also thankfully averted with Smurfette, where in one episode as she is seen falling down a shaft and the camera shifts from a frontal shot to a rear shot.
* GoldDigger: Lady Jasmine turns out to be this in the episode "The Prince And The Hopper", when Smurfette finds out that Prince Theodore's bride-to-be is only interested in marrying him for the money.
* GoodAngelBadAngel: Appears in a few episodes in the form of Angel Smurf and Devil Smurf whenever a Smurf is tempted with a moral dilemma.
* GoodLuckGesture: In the episode "The Blue Plague", Papa Smurf tells the prince-turned-frog to cross his fingers for luck as he mixes up the poultice that will restore him to his human form. The prince tries to cross the fingers on his hand, but since he's got the hands of the frog, the fingers won't stay crossed. Papa Smurf laughs and excuses himself for that statement.
* GoodNewsBadNews: Brainy does this to Clumsy in "The Secret of The Village Well", saying that the good news is that Clumsy's waiting is over, and the bad news is that he is compelled to tell Clumsy that his wish will never come true because he needs a penny in order for the Wishing Fairy to grant him his wish.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: Falan the evil fairy in "The Magic Rattle" has bat wings compared to good fairies.
** Cherubs that are turned evil in "Hearts N Smurfs" also have bat wings.

* GreatBigBookOfEverything: The Great Book of Spells, which Gargamel consults at times for various purposes, including catching Smurfs. However, the book's answers hardly work out in the wizard's favor.
* TheGreatFlood: Gargamel ends up creating such a flood that covers the entire Smurf Forest by using magic beans in the episode "Blue Eyes Returns". It took Smurfette and her pegasus friend Blue Eyes to fix the problem and restore the forest to normal.
* TheGreatRepair: In the episode "Never Smurf Off Till Tomorrow", six Smurfs are carried off by a hurricane inside a windmill into the chasm of an active volcano, which then crashes. Even worse is that the volcano is going to erupt soon,[[labelnote:*]]As in "it erupts once every 500 years, and erupted ''exactly'' [[ExactlyExtyYearsAgo 500 years ago, to the day]][[/labelnote]] so Handy quickly devises a plan to convert the remains of the windmill into a primitive helicopter through which he and his fellow Smurfs can escape.
* GreenAesop: "The Incredible Shrinking Wizard", which deals with Gargamel polluting the Smurf river and the effect that it has on both the wizard and the river's inhabitants.
* GrewBeyondTheirProgramming: Clockwork Smurf was originally created to be a servant of the Smurfs. When Brainy accidentally messed around with the robot's gears to see what made him tick, he at first malfunctioned until Handy turned it off, thinking that his machine was a failure. As it turned out, the malfunction ultimately gave Clockwork Smurf life, as he now operated independently of his own "programming" and helped Prince Gerard escape his EvilAunt Lady Imperia so that he could regain the right of kingship before she becomes queen. After that, Clockwork Smurf became an adviser to King Gerard and a friend to the Smurfs.
* GroupHug: Grouchy at the end of "A Hug For Grouchy" gets hug-mugged and doesn't like it.
* GrowlingGut: Greedy gets the growling gut when he goes hungry. In "Haunted Smurfs", Brainy gets spooked by the sound of loud growling in a dark mysterious castle, only to see Greedy passing by him clutching his stomach, implying that it was merely the hallway echoing his growling gut.
* GrowsOnTrees: There's an episode where Gargamel's mother plants a money tree outside Greedy's house to test his avarice. Although the "money" it produces is actually a confectionery wrapped in golden paper called a "golden goodie", it has the effect of drawing the Smurfs to it and trading what they thought was personally valuable just to have a single piece of the money tree's candy.
* HairstyleMalfunction: Hogatha in the cartoon show constantly wears a wig. In the episode "Smurfette's Golden Tresses", she wears a blond beehive wig on her date with Lizardo, only for the beehive to attract a swarm of bees that forced her to jump into the pond, where she lost her wig and her date.
* HairTriggerAvalanche: Brainy Smurf causes one in the beginning of the episode "The Smurfs That Time Forgot".
* HallOfMirrors: Vanity Smurf goes into a house of mirrors in one episode and comes out with a bunch of copies of himself coming out of the mirrors.

* HandGagging: Papa Smurf does this to Sassette in "Chlorhydris' Lost Love" when she is about to reveal where Drusilla is keeping Manfred prisoner, but Papa Smurf only wants the information revealed on the promise that they will be released from being Chlorhydris' captives.
* HappinessIsMandatory: Inverted in the episode "Happy Unhappiness Day To You", where ''unhappiness'' among the Smurfs is mandatory for one day. Strangely, this means that Grouchy can't be grumbling for one day! Possibly played straight in "A Hug For Grouchy", where hugs are mandatory for each Smurf on Hug-A-Smurf Day, and if you don't want a hug, some Smurfs will come and ''hug assault'' you!
* HappyBirthdayToYou: In "All Hallow's Eve", the Smurfs sing a happy birthday song to Jokey to the melody of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas".
* HarbingerOfImpendingDoom: Grandpa Smurf in the four-part episode "Smurfquest" returns to the village after a 500-year quest around the world to warn the other Smurfs of the impending danger of the Long Life Force Stone losing its power.
* HarmlessFreezing: A baby triceratops is unfrozen by the Smurfs in the episode "The Smurfs That Time Forgot", which then kicks off the plot of Season 9.
* HatePlague: The Root Of Evil from the episode of the same name. The Yellow Hate Disease from "Hefty's Heart" would also count, as would Chlorhydris' black-heart arrows which Cupid accidentally fires in "Chlorhydris' Lost Love".

* HollywoodMidLifeCrisis: Papa Smurf in the episode "Papa's Wedding Day" goes through his version of this when he keeps being reminded of how old he is by his little Smurfs. Sometime after he meets the young and beautiful Flowerbell the woodnymph, finding himself falling love with her, he dyes his beard a youthful shade of brown and has a dating relationship with Flowerbell that would have resulted in a marriage had not the Smurfs figured out that she was an infiltrator sent by the evil sorcerer Balthazar to capture the wisest Smurf of all. After the relationship had ended, Papa Smurf's beard goes back to being white, but he gains wisdom in knowing from the song that he sings to Flowerbell that "you're only as old as you think you are".
* HollywoodMirage: In the episode "Mummy Dearest", Greedy sees what he thinks is a big muffin in the Egyptian desert, only to find himself biting into a rock.
* HopeSpot: At the end of "The Smurf Odyssey", the Smurfs get the crystals assembled in a configuration by Zeus that hopefully will get them home...but then a hard wind blows and disassembles the crystals, and with it any hope of going straight home.
* HornyVikings: Brainy and Clumsy encounter {{Lilliputians}} that resemble Vikings in the Season 9 episode "Big Shot Smurfs".
* HotSpringsEpisode: The episode "Smurfs On Wheels" is basically three Smurfs on a hiking trip versus a group of Smurfs riding in Handy's new Smurf Wagon in order to get to Dreamy Steamy Springs. Naturally the hiking Smurfs get there first while the wagon-riding Smurfs only get there by way of Brainy's driving only for the vehicle to end up heading for the waterfall.
* HulkSpeak: Bigmouth and all the ogres in this series.
* HumanChess: The episode "The Grouchiest Game In Town, which had a villain who forced people to do this in a game similar to chess. Losing meant being turned into a piece for his ever-growing collection.
* HumanSnowball: Clumsy in the cartoon special "The Smurfic Games" turns into a Smurf snowball when he attempts to make a ski jump run during the titular games tournament.

When the two Papa Smurfs finally merge back into one near the end of the episode, the single Papa Smurf ends up wearing both feathers in his cap.

* ImMelting: In "The Smurfs Of The Round Table", Morgan le Fey steals Excalibur, uses it to turn King Arthur and his men to wax, and then casts a spell on the sun to make it burn hotter so that King Arthur and everything in Camelot will melt away. Fortunately, the melting process takes time, which gives the Smurfs enough time to get Excalibur back from the evil sorceress and to restore everyone in Camelot to normal.

* TheJailer: Castle Captive was a villain who was both the Jailer and the jail. [[GeniusLoci A living, intelligent castle]], it appeared in the human world once every five hundred years, its appearance luring travelers to it, only to trap them inside and after 24 hours, carry them to whatever realm it called home, for... [[ForTheEvulz well, some reason known only to himself]] but he did seem to be [[{{Sadist}} a cruel creature who liked seeing victims suffer.]] Escaping it was almost impossible, because it could control every part of itself, doors, furniture, even items as small as silverware, and use them against anyone who caused trouble. One prisoner was Nanny Smurf, who was rescued after the Castle appeared five centuries after she was kidnapped.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Grouchy Smurf likes Smurfette, and is also very found of Baby Smurf. Is also a HiddenHeartOfGold, as he doesn't like anyone knowing about his soft spots.
* JumpingOutOfACake: In "Papa's Wedding Day", Balthazar does this when Flowerbell gets Papa Smurf alone in the forest with a big giant cake waiting there.

* JustFineWithoutYou: In the episode "Papa's Day Off", the Smurfs try to show how self-reliant they are in taking care of their own problems in order to encourage Papa Smurf to take a day off. During his day off, Papa Smurf feels like his little Smurfs would be better off without him -- until Homnibus shows him through his Imaginarium that in dire situations like Bigmouth eating up their smurfberry patches, they're still in need of him. And upon Papa Smurf's return to the village, he proves just how much he is needed by the other Smurfs when a log floating downstream nearly destroys the village dam.
* KangarooCourt: Brainy was put in charge of looking after Baby, and then let him wander off; then he blamed Clumsy for doing it. After Papa Smurf tells him that no-one should be blamed, and then leaves to visit Homnibus, Brainy has other ideas, as if framing Clumsy wasn't bad enough; he puts Clumsy on trial, which is ''completely'' rigged. He has Greedy act as the judge, and bribes him with pastry so that he'd agree with every motion he made. In a subversion of the Trope, Brainy is caught in the act of a bribe and his scheme is uncovered when an understandably angry Papa Smurf comes back. (Probably the worst part of this is, Brainy was so concerned about covering up what he did, that he didn't notice that Baby - who again, he was supposed to look after - wandered off ''again'', and ironically, Clumsy had to rescue him this time.)

* MistakenForDying: In the episode "Smurf Me No Flowers", Brainy assumes from overhearing Papa Smurf in his laboratory talking about Vanity's plant that Lazy's insomnia is a prelude to his fellow Smurf's soon departure from life, and so he gets his fellow Smurfs to hold a final party for Lazy to comfort him in his final days without letting him know. * NeverTheSelvesShallMeet: In the episode "No Time For Smurfs", Handy accidentally creates temporal copies of himself, Brainy, Clumsy, and Smurfette when they mess around with Father Time's Sands Of Time hourglass by first causing time to go backwards and then causing time to repeat previous events such as their discovery of Father Time's workshop. * NeverTrustATitle: The episode "Hefty And The Wheelsmurfer" is called "Fortachon y Pitufina" ("Hefty And Smurfette") in the Spanish dub, despite the fact that the episode isn't ''exclusively'' about Hefty and Smurfette in any sort of relationship. Perhaps a bit of Fan Shipping took place when the developers of the Spanish dub were looking for a suitable title for the episode?
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: In "Every Picture Smurfs A Story", Papa Smurf is captured on a portrait Painter painted of him using paints mixed with a magic elixir that is said to give paintings life, thus accidentally freeing Maestro from the canvas he was imprisoned on. Through the course of the episode, Painter's paints were swapped with Maestro's paints, and near the end when Painter is using his own paints to paint a portrait of Maestro to put him back on the canvas, Maestro ends up inadvertently giving Painter his own magicked paints, and with those paints Painter completed the portrait, sending Maestro back onto the canvas and freeing Papa Smurf in the process.
* TheNightThatNeverEnds: The druids' plan in "The Smurfs' Time Capsule".
* NoBiologicalSex: Smoogle and the race of Smoogles seen in the Season 9 episode "G'Day Smoogle" are creatures seen as having no biological sex.

* SolarPoweredMagnifyingGlass: In "The Smurf Fire Brigade", Papa Smurf accidentally leaves his magnifying glass on the table outside before going into his house to take a nap. The magnifying glass focuses the sun's rays to start burning a spot onto the table until eventually the whole top of the table catches on fire. Lazy smells smoke and realizes he's in a dangerous spot, so he crawls out and yells fire, catching the attention of Papa Smurf and all the other Smurfs. Quickly a Smurf brings a bucket of water to the table to put out the fire, making all the Smurfs cheer.
* SolidGoldPoop: The chicken that lays painted Easter eggs in the Season 9 episode "Painter's Egg-cellent Adventure".

By the special's end, Woody got the simple wedding he wanted all along.
