Godzooky]]. The series follows the adventures of a team of scientists on the research vessel called the Calico, which is headed by Captain Carl Majors. The rest of the crew include scientist Dr. Quinn Darien, her nephew Pete, her research assistant Brock, and the ship's first mate, Carl. The group often call upon Godzilla by using a special communicator when in peril, such as attacks by other giant monsters or impending natural disasters. Godzooky is also able to howl to summon Godzilla.

What Could Have Been

Added DiffLines:

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Apparently, Hanna-Barbera were unable to use Godzilla's trademark roar. This sounds ''truly bizarre'' considering they secured the rights from Toho to have their character in an animated adaptation, but not the sounds he makes. H-B were forced to cast Ted Cassidy to voice the character instead. To add insult to injury, [[NoExportForYou the Japanese version of this show DOES feature Godzilla's distinctive "SKREEONK!"]].
** H-B also wanted Godzilla to fight other classic monsters from the franchise's Shōwa Era. Toho refused. H-B were forced to come up with their own monsters. They also wanted Godzilla's son, Minilla to star to make the show more 'family-orientated'. ''[[ExecutiveMeddling Toho refused]]''. So the cartoon's creators had to come up with Godzooky instead as a distant relative.

This series contains examples of:
* AliensSpeakingEnglish: Often.
* AllThereInTheManual: Exactly how did Godzilla & Godzooky first meet the ''Calico'' and its crew, anyway? Only the original production notes for the show ever divulged that information: [[spoiler:because the ''Calico'' saved Godzooky from being entangled in some seaweed.]]
* AnimatedAdaptation
* {{Atlantis}}: Actually hidden from the rest of the world in a manner similar to Brigadoon.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: Godzilla himself, natch, as well as most of the creatures he was pitted against. Godzooky probably also counts, as he's so big his ''head'' is larger than most doorways and he tends to tower over his human companions. It's revealed in the episode ''The Firebird'' that the main reason the Calico rarely uses what appears to be a set of optional hydrofoils to reach fairly impressive speeds is because he's so damn heavy he puts a lot of strain on the ship.
* BellyOfTheWhale: Carl, Brock, and the ship get ''eaten'' by the Magnetic Monster.
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti: The Watchuki tribe
* BlobMonster
* BrainyBrunette: Dr. Quinn Darien
* TheCaptain: Capt. Carl Majors, although he really shares the leader position with Quinn
* ContinuityNod: The penultimate episode "Island of Doom" plays the closest to the original ''Godzilla'' film, as Godzilla is attacked by the island's defense forces and has to rampage his way across to save the ''Calico'''s crew.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Episode one. The team brazenly walks right into the lava tubes of a recently-erupted volcano.
* CoolShip: The ''Calico'', much like JacquesCousteau's ''Calypso'', but it has a swift hydrofoil mode.
* EvilTwin: In one episode, a MadScientist clones the crew. In another episode, a [[VoluntaryShapeshifting shapeshifter]] impersonates Godzilla.
* {{Expy}}: Godzooky resembled Minya from the actual Godzilla movies and has often been confused for the same character by casual viewers.
** The giant turtle monster in the arctic appears to have been a shout out to {{Gamera}}'s origin.
** Ditto for the volcanic Fire Bird as a stand-in for {{Rodan}}.
** And the ''Calico'' and her crew are obviously based on JacquesCousteau and his ship the ''Calypso.''
* EnergyAbsorption: The energy beast fed on power from a hydroelectric dam to grow bigger and stronger. Also, in a different episode, a turtle fed on on magnetic fields in order to increase in size and power.
* EnthrallingSiren: Morphea and her sisters.
* EyeBeams: Godzilla has laser vision in addition to fire breath in this version (probably because lasers are easier to animate)
* FantasyKitchenSink
* ForScience: Captain Majors sometimes chides Dr. Darien for letting her curiosity lead her into danger. However, her scientific skills end up [[ScienceHero saving the day]] more often than not.
* GiantFlyer: The Fire Bird, as well as several giant insects.
* GodzillaThreshold: Crossed once an episode.
* GreekMythology: The sirens and their pet chimera.
* HeroicSacrifice: Carl and Brock (who, with the ship, have been ''[[BellyOfTheWhale swallowed whole,]]'' along with a lot of other random objects) are prepared to sacrifice themselves to save the world from the Magnetic Monster. They make it through okay, though.
* HotScientist: Dr. Darien
* HumanPopsicle: The frozen German submarine. Interestingly, since these Germans are from the ''First'' World War (and therefore ''not'' Nazis), they turn out to be perfectly decent folks once finally they realize they're in the future and the war is long over. [[GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere Then a giant squid attacks!]]
** Also the Atlanteans
* HumongousMecha: The Colossus of Atlantis
* IgnoredExpert: In a double [[ShoutOut shout-out,]] the one Atlantean scientist who tried to warn his people their city would sink was named ''[[SuperGirl Kara]]-El.''
* [[IncredibleShrinkingMan Incredible Shrinking Godzilla]]: He even gets small enough in "[=MicroGodzilla=]" that ''bacteria in a petri dish'' become potential foes.
* JustInTime: Practically a CatchPhrase on the show.
* {{Kaiju}}: Of course.
* TheKidWithTheRemoteControl: Though the ''real'' signal device belonged to Captain Majors, Godzooky (Pete's pet super-lizard) could substitute when required.
* LivingStatue: The Golden Guardians
* MindControl: Axor, the Monster of Storm Island
* MonsterOfTheWeek: TropeCodifier, perhaps?
* {{Nephewism}}: A double dose -- Godzooky, nephew of Godzilla, as well as Pete, Dr. Darien's nephew.
* OffModel: Godzilla himself, not surprisingly.
* OhCisco
* RealityWarper: The Dream Stone, although it really only gets used to bring the Golden Guardians to life. [[spoiler: It gets smashed]] before we learn if it could do anything else.
* RecklessSidekick: Godzooky.
* ScienceHero: The whole crew, but mostly Dr. Darien.
* SealedEvilInACan: The Cyclops
* SmallAnnoyingCreature: Godzooky; somewhat subverted, as Godzooky was a good 30 feet tall if he was an inch.
** And, even though he's sweet-natured, Zooky is sometimes useful for intimidating human enemies since, you know, he's a thirty-foot tall flying dinosaur.
* TagalongKid: Pete.
* TokenMinority: Dr. Darien's assistant Brock.
* WeirdnessMagnet: The ''Calico'' clearly is one.
* XMeetsY: Godzooky's characterization was Minya meets ScoobyDoo.
* YourSizeMayVary
