The third film in [[WesternAnimation/DespicableMe the series]] and [[WesternAnimation/{{Minions}} fourth entry]] in the overall franchise, ''Despicable Me 3'' is the 2017 sequel to ''WesternAnimation/DespicableMe2'' and is once again from Creator/{{Universal}} and Creator/IlluminationEntertainment. The film once again centers around Gru (Creator/SteveCarell), along with his wife Lucy Wilde (Creator/KristenWiig), their three adopted daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes (Creator/MirandaCosgrove, Dana Gaier and Nev Scharrel respectively) and the Minions (Pierre Coffin).

** [[StylisticSuck The commercial for the]] ''Evil Bratt'' action figure brings to mind the plot-important ''[[WesternAnimation/ToyStory Buzz Lightyear commercial]]''.

** Minions Dave and Jerry join Gru's family on the trip to Freedonia, and are last seen helping Edith prank Fritz, Dru's butler. They aren't seen again for the rest of the film(and neither is Fritz).

* PosthumousCharacter: Marlena's ex-husband, Robert, father of Gru and Dru, who was a legendary supervillain. Dru hopes to follow in his father's footsteps and become one himself due to, like his brother was in the first film, being a WellDoneSonGuy.

* SoProudOfYou: Though Gru was never able to meet his late father, Marlena had always told him that he had died of disappointment when Gru was born. Dru reveals that their father, himself a renowned supervillain, was actually immensely proud of Gru for his villainous accomplishments, something Gru is visibly touched to hear.

* StylisticSuck: The footage we see of ''Evil Bratt'' has cheesy dialogue and acting with lacklustre and incredibly obvious special effects, [[TheEighties reflecting the era that it was made in]]. Despite this, [[PsychopathicManchild Bratt himself]] still regards it as [[DamnedByAFoolsPraise a true work of art]].

* TheUnfavorite: Gru's mother claims this to be true of Gru, stating she had "second pick" as to which son she got. However, Dru actually turned out to be the Unfavorite of their father, due to his absolute ineptitude at villainy and was really proud of Gru becoming a villain like him.

* VillainousLineage: Dru wants to be a villain just like Gru was and he discusses the trope in regards to villainy running in their family.

* WellDoneSonGuy: Like Gru was to his mother in the first film, Dru was this to their father in the backstory. This is why Dru wants to follow in his footsteps and become a supervillain.

* AdultFear:
** Subtle[[note]](similar to ''Despicable Me 2'')[[/note]] example. Gru and Lucy are fired from the AVL. And they have three kids and 10,000 Minions to support.
** Lucy hears Agnes' screams from a shady-like establishment and this was ''before'' her daughters have gone off on their own with her looking for them.
** Near the climax, [[spoiler:Bratt pretends to be Lucy (gagging and sticking the real Lucy in a closet) and kidnaps Margo, Edith, and Agnes along with the diamond.]] And if that wasn't enough, [[spoiler:he almost gets the girls ''killed'' by placing them on top of an unsafe skyscraper.]]

** The first time, she hears Agnes scream from inside the bar Agnes and Edith are in (the Tipsy Unicorn), and, [[AdultFear thinking Agnes is in trouble]], proceeds to beat up the patrons, who are almost all men. Once she learns the girls are fine, she apologizes to the patrons and leaves with the girls.

* FingerlessGloves: Worn by Bratt as part of his Evil Bratt garb.

** While Valerie firing Gru (and then Lucy) was already harsh, throwing them off the headquarters plane was unwarranted.

* RealityEnsues:
** Gru has spent almost his entire life in villainy and has only been working for the AVL presumably for a year. Of course he'd be tempted into going back into the career he's in the longest.
** Gru has spent almost his entire life in villainy. Dru has not. While he's an enthusiastic amateur he still has no clue what he's doing and it's explicitly pointed out after they [[spoiler:successfully rob Bratt that their success was in spite of Dru, not because of him]], which is precisely why he was kept out of the way.
** Following from the above, [[spoiler: Gru's decision to not go back to villainy (much to the shock and anger of Dru) makes sense. No one's going to go back to a career just because a family member (who you just met to boot) asks you to.]]
** Lucy may be a FriendToAllChildren, but prior to marrying Gru and becoming a stepmother to Margo, Edith, and Agnes, she's never been a mother. Of course she would face some problems.
** Despite delivering a performance that earns them a standing ovation, the Minions still trespassed on a film studio lot in order to do it, and end up being detained and then arrested. At least they got to finish their song before security apprehended them.
** Dru impulsively steals two lollipops from a candy van and soon has the police tailing him and Gru.
** In the beginning of the film, the Anti-Villain League (AVL) fires Gru due to him allowing Balthazar Bratt to get away with stealing the world's large diamond. Lucy attempts to defend her husband and protests against the league's decision and tells them that they should fire her if they plan on firing Gru. Lucy ends up getting fired along with Gru.

* BeingGoodSucks: The Minions quit working for Gru for this reason, as while they want to go back into villainy, Gru does not. They go back to him later, because of all the good times they had with Gru. Ironically, the first one to start to miss him was Mel, the Minions' unofficial leader.
