A DirectToVideo {{Midquel}}, ''{{Bambi II}}'', was released in 2006, a whole ''64 years'' after the original. It focuses on the period of Bambi's life immediately following his mother's death. Apparently this was a more interesting story to tell than the book's actual sequel, which had already been adapted by Disney into a comic. (Said comic has long since been out of print and is now a highly sought after collector's item)

* AmbitionIsEvil: Ronno from Bambi II is a fine example of this.
** Although to be fair, Ronno isn't so much evil as he is just a Jerkass.
* BerserkButton: After the Great Prince saves Bambi from the hunter and his dogs:

** Bambi gets one when Ronno teases him for [[spoiler: being sent off to live with another doe by his father.]]

* BrickJoke: Flower's "Turles are so scary" line midway through the film [[spoiler: gets backed up at the end when Ronno winds up with a turtle clinging to his nose.]]
* ButtMonkey: Should Ronno's {{Jerkass}} antics ever get grating, just wait five seconds for him to fall victim to some {{Amusing Injur|ies}}y or other form of humiliation.

* WellDoneSonGuy : The Great Prince to Bambi, though his father means well, and it doesn't stop the latter {{calling the old man out}} later on either.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotAwesome: The Great Prince does everything in a ridiculously majestic manner but somehow seems to do it all with his eyes literally closed.

* BadassAdorable: Bambi. If him as an adult doesn't count in the original film, then the climax of the midquel with him as a fawn certainly does.
* BreakTheCutie: Happens in the first film when his mother dies and his father tells him off about what happened. Happens again in the midquel, once Bambi's hope of his mother being alive get dashed, as well as getting berated by his father for falling for the hunters trick.

* LetsGetDangerous: Bambi, right before engaging in combat with Ronno for trying to separate him from Faline.
** Repeated in the midquel when Ronno presses Bambi's BerserkButton by taunting him because [[spoiler: his father sent him off to live with another doe.]]

* LukeIAmYourFather: The Great Prince turns out to be Bambi's father midway through the first film. The midquel (which takes place immediately after the death of Bambi's mother) also states early on that he is his father.

* TheObiWan: The Great Prince. This is averted more than halfway through ''Bambi II'', however, when the Prince finally starts to open up and care more for Bambi as a father.
* TheObiWannabe: Friend Owl.

* OwlBeDamned: Averted with Friend Owl.
* TheOwlKnowingOne: Played straight with Friend Owl while being crossed over with KnowNothingKnowItAll.

* SmellySkunk: Averted in the first film, played straight in the midquel with, well, take a guess.
** In the midquel, [[spoiler: it also serves as a ChekhovsGun when Flower uses it to scare off one of the dogs that was chasing Bambi.]]
* TheStoic: The Great Prince in the first film. Starts like like this in the midquel, but is gradually averted as the movie progresses.
* ThroughAFaceFullOfFur: Flower turns red when being kissed for the first time, the blush travelling from his nose all the way to the tip of his tail.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Ronno goes from simply making fun of Bambi when they first meet, to deliberately coaxing him into fights and confrontations. As an adult, he even seems to provide an animal example of AttemptedRape, when he tries forcing Faline apart from Bambi.

* WhamEpisode: Bambi's mother dying. It traumatized ''a lot'' of little kids that saw that movie. One movie reviewer even recalled in his childhood waking up in the middle of the night and going to his parents' room to check if they were both still alive.

* AmbiguouslyGay: Flower appears to be this in the first half of the film...only to have him fall in love with a female skunk early in the second half. It should be noted that the Flower seen in the first portion of the film was just a kit, the one in the 'twitterpated' sequence's voice and size making it rather obvious he had gone through the equivalent of puberty.

* DeathByNewberyMedal: The [[ItWasHisSled death of Bambi's mother]] is very well known and [[TearJerker upsetting]].

* KissingCousins: Bambi and Faline are still listed as cousins in some licensed books based off the Disney version. Whether or not it's canon in the movies but never mentioned is unknown.

* MoodWhiplash: Bambie's mom's death scene is so memorable because the film had been so tranquil up until that point. Directly afterwards, there's a cut right into spring with happy birds singing an upbeat song [[IntercourseWithYou about the mating season]].

* PuppyDogEyes: AKA "Bambi Eyes", in the film's case.
** Especially when he learned his mother is gone.

* SnowMeansDeath: There's a heavy snowfall after Bambi's mom dies.
* SpellMyNameWithAThe: The Great Prince of the Forest, Bambi's father.

* NoExportForYou: Surprisingly, the original novel got a direct sequel called ''Bambi's Children''...that was never released or translated in America.
** However, back in Bambi's heydey, Disney did complete and publish a ''comic book'' adaptation of Bambi's Children.
*** Interestingly, the modern ''''Bambi II'''' happened to be released theatrically overseas, but in the US it was a direct to video release, for whatever reason.
*** Also, thanks to a little thing called WorldWarII, ''Bambi'' originally didn't get released in Japan. However, OsamuTezuka made a manga adaptation of the film during the 60's after getting permission from Walt himself when they met each other at the World Fair of the time.

* DefrostingIceKing: Occurs to The Great Prince during the film.

* ICallHimMrHappy: In a G-rated version, Ronno has apparently named his antler buds and refers to them as "[[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything the boys]]."

* LargeHam: It's really hard to take the Great Prince seriously when you realize that he's voiced by friggin' ''[[StarTrekTheNextGeneration Picard]]''.

* PapaWolf: The Great Prince who took on the hunting dogs to protect his son.

* {{Aesop}}: In the original novel, Faline's brother Gobo (who is exclusive to the novel) appears to have been killed by a hunter in the same winter Bambi's mother died only to return some time later as a full grown deer, and it turns out a human family had saved his life. (He was dying of starvation by the time he was taken away.) But as a result he had lost his fear of humans. The next time the hunters came to the woods, Gobo was the first to go. This is basically Felix Salten's commentary on keeping wild animals like deer as pets.

* {{Disneyfication}} Even with Bambi's mother dying, the film's tone is significantly lighter than the novel's (it was written for adult audiences), which was much darker and more brutal, including graphic death scenes.

* DudeLooksLikeALady or ViewerGenderConfusion: Flower, the skunk, before he grows up. He has a very high, cute voice, and acts very demure and a bit shy, and would rather sit and smell the flowers than go on an adventure. Even after he grows up, his voice gets deeper, the first hint that he is actually a male, but he still looks effeminate.

* GRatedSex: After getting "[[UnusualEuphemism twitterpated]]" and fighting for Faline, Bambi wakes up next to her in a thicket. Several months later in Springtime, [[BabiesEverAfter a pair of twins]] wake up next to mom.
