At the end of their era, called the Age of Primes, the group split into two factions and fought each other with Onyx being one of the few who were fatally wounded. He chose to return to the Allspark before his injuries could kill him, allowing his spark to join with their creator and leave the mortal world behind.
Now that the Allspark is on Earth, it needed a protector. Cheetor was the guardian that it chose, giving his spark a new body so that he could interact with the world of the living.
