* In ''Wily Beast and Weakest Creature'', the player characters have to take down a takeover of the surface world from Hell by animal spirits, and Youmu's there because she's half-ghost, and therefore knowledgable about spirits. It also helps that Youmu's Hakurouken can send these spirits to nirvana as well.

Updating my old WMG

Gensokyo was never meant to be a permanent solution to the growing lack of belief in the fantastic in the outside world. Consider that canonically, the Hakurei Barrier has only existed since 1885. Now consider how relatively small an area Gensokyo is. It's in Japan, which is itself not a particularly large country. Gensokyo is probably only a few hundred square miles large, if that. The more long-lived residents of Gensokyo are already starting to get restless from the confinement, as shown by the fairly frequent incidents that Reimu has to deal with. Yukari planned this from the beginning, and has further plans for when Gensokyo can no longer stand as it is.

Now consider how relatively small an area Gensokyo is. It's in Japan, which is itself not a particularly large country. Gensokyo is probably only a few hundred square miles large, if that. The While they have started to be resolved more peacefully thanks to the spell card rules, incidents seem to be happening with increasing frequency in Gensokyo. This suggests that the more long-lived residents of Gensokyo are already starting to get restless from the confinement, even if they're not acting as shown by violently as we might expect. In addition, as we see from the fairly frequent incidents that Reimu has near-future of Renko and Maribel's time, the outside world is a much less happy place than it once was, and seems to deal with. be slowly dying. Neither side of the barrier seems to have a stable status quo; eventually, something is going to break. Yukari planned this from the beginning, and has further plans for when Gensokyo can no longer stand as it is.
is. There are a couple of ways this could play out:
* Gensokyo is meant to hold out long enough for the humanity in the outside world to die off entirely, such that magic and fantasy can reclaim the Earth.
* Gensokyo is meant to last until the outside world realizes that it needs the fantastic and inexplicable to make life worth living, and for the youkai, fairies, gods, etc in Gensokyo learn to peacefully coexist with humanity. Once these two conditions are met, the barrier will come down on its own.

* PettingZooPeople with no other hats (e.g. Tewi Inaba, Yuugi Hoshiguma); this is probably justified in that they're like [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} Felicia]], who has strategically-placed fur-patches.

** Also, the two of them, along with Yuuka, were the very first patients of the hospital. Because they didn't have much company, they started to make some imaginary "friends" that they could fight with (well, there was Yuuka, but the caretakers thought it was better not to let them in contact with her. Not that they succeded, of course), along with recurring character Mima who Marisa claimed was her teacher and that Reimu could never defeat her (thus their rivalry). Eventually, more patients ended up in the hospital, thus there was no need for any imaginary friends when the girls finally had someone to interact with(thus explaining why the PC98-era is {{Retgone}}).

** Although this may not have been because he turned himself into a youkai, but more because of the method (intentionally becoming a vengeful spirit while also negating the purpose of his vengeance, essentially becoming a youkai without drawbacks).
** It may also be a case of HeKnowsTooMuch, with his knowledge of the true relationship between humans and youkai in Gensokyo.

*** Not so, the games are set in the near future in the Outside World, as explained in the music compilation CDs Mary has visited Gensoukyou several times during Incidents that run concurrent to the story. iP*ds would be as out of place as 56k modems are now when you consider they live in a world with foldable screens for newspapers and robots as servers at cafés.

** It's worth mentioning that this is subtly implied by the fact Gensokyo is more or less considered another otherworld in regards to Hecatia. Perhaps Makai counts as one?

* Alternatively, Gensokyo is what happens in Reimu's mind, when she's playing with her dolls. She actually has a huge collection of victorian-dress dolls and decides to play with them, since their battles are non-lethal and it explains why everyone drinks tea after, she must've read books on Japanese folklore, every doll has a personality and it would explain the lack of men, since there are few male dolls and she's in the phase in which she must think that boys have cooties. As would say Spongebob, "Imagination!"

[[WMG: Yukari created Creator/{{Toonami}}]]
The Toonami block on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim is actually based off an idea that Yukari had when she realized the lack of men in Gensokyo and that the citizens were becoming lesbians. She once had a son named TOM that she gave birth to after marrying a robotic Lunarian man. After she broke up with her husband, she constructed a spaceship for him that also had an artificial intelligence named SARA that Nitori made so TOM wouldn't be lonely. She sent the ship into space and vowed to never see him again. After realizing there were no men in Gensokyo, Yukari remembered her son and started to write stories about his adventures in space with SARA. These later became the Total Immersion Events. She wanted to see her stories as movies, and at the same time Cartoon Network was looking to rebrand their action block called Toonami. Somehow, Yukari found them and presented her stories to them. Cartoon Network loved it, but they told Yukari to change some things that couldn't be shown on television. Yukari rewrote the stories, and so TOM, SARA, and the Absolution are all actually creations of Yukari Yakumo. And ''The Intruder'', ''Lockdown'', ''Trapped in Hyperspace'', ''The Intruder II'', and ''The Intruder III'' were originally written by her.

[[WMG: No one is fooled by Kasen's hermit disguise. Reimu chooses not to out her so she can feign ignorance and do nothing about it.]]
* Reimu has impeccable instincts. She can tell whether someone's the true final boss or not just by feeling, and she can tell the direction that trouble is coming from without any clues.
* Reimu responds to Kasen's lie about the true origin of Setsubun with "That kinda makes sense! I'll buy it!" Reimu's lies are always blatant and terrible, so she all but outright states that she's choosing to believe a lie.
* Kasen's lies are just as terrible, and she clearly has no poker face.
* Chapter 24 is a big turning point where Kasen realizes the Reimu and Marisa have good detective abilities. Despite this, Reimu and Marisa let her off the hook despite a paper-thin alibi.
* Given that the intro subtitles start out haughty and condescending, then slowly turn into normal subtitles, WAHH is likely written from Kasen's point of view, and in her PoV, she starts out thinking everyone else is an idiot, then ''she'' slowly learns to respect ''them'' despite setting out to do the opposite.
** The others' apparent competence level has slowly risen with time.
** The characters are depicted as much more competent in other canon works.
** This isn't due to them getting smarter, but Kasen slowly realizing they're not (total) idiots.
** Kasen's arrogance is the only thing that's kept her from realizing she outed herself a long time ago.
* Reimu is sometimes kind and merciful to Youkai she likes (which is why the youkai characters aren't sealed away when defeated, and she allows them to party at her place after every incident), but above all else, she is lazy. If she outed Kasen, not only would she be crushing Kasen's dreams of being closer to humans, she'd probably have to make a show of doing something about it to appease the now-fearful village humans.
** Also, Kasen's BlatantLies are hilarious.
