** Alternatively, the salesman sold those masks to the Terminans and once everyone had masks he moved on.
** Another alternative is that he stumbled onto the gateway between the worlds and discovered a world without the masks his world embraced. Most of the masks in Termina probably aren't magic either, though the Keaton Mask may/may not be based on the real thing; and before anyone calls foul, the guard only states that Keaton is a popular character with children. Who's to say the HMS doesn't hold occasional puppet shows or the like to bring more happiness to the world? The guy (assuming he's just a man with a creepy smile/a mask) is from an AU, and travels enough and collects enough stories and lives that he should have some pretty interesting tales to tell...

Watch the first trailer for Majora 3D. It's spooky and almost soley focused on the game's most creepy moments and music. The friggen Elegy statue made it in (and appeared somewhere it was previously impossible for him to be summoned...). Scarier visuals, higher intensity, a BenDrowned ShoutOut, I saw all bets are off now.
* Actually, you could summon the Elegy statue in Ikana Canyon, not just the Ancient Castle or Stone Tower. I personally doubt they intended it to be a BenDrowned ShoutOut, but it's still possible Nintendo would make it a bit more spooky than it already was.

Well, not technically. He is only an illusion or deity sent to the world by the goddesses to protect Majora's Mask. He only shows up to those who have important destinies with the masks he guards. In OoT, no one but Link ever enters the Happy Mask Shop. In MM, no one but Link ever enters the Clock Tower. Skull Kid floated RIGHT PAST where HMS was, and he showed no intent of stopping the imp. So, why would HMS be seen by Skull Kid when he stole the mask and at the very end? The beginning, perhaps HMS was not finished... processing (or whatever you want to call it) into the world. The end, the goddesses could have allowed Skull Kid to see him so that he would learn his lesson. This would also explain how he appears in later games hundreds of years later. This raises one more question - what about the children of the moon, who look so much like him? Well, when Link went inside the moon, he landed in a large, open area. OPEN area. Even with magic, there would still be some way in and out of there. The reason for this? That was the goddesses realm. Majora took over it during MM. The children of the moon are these HMS deities in the making.

It works once OOT Link visits his shop. After following/watching Link he learns he intends to find Navi in the woods so Vaati/the HMS sets his master plan into motion. He goes and unseals Majora's Mask but knows that letting it loose right then would destroy Hyrule along with him in it. Instead he lets himself get beat by Skull Kid so he can steal MM and unleash it's power in Termina. Knowing that the Skull Kid will soon draw Link into that realm his plan works out perfectly. As the Mask Salesman, Vaati pretends to be a nice person helping Link in exchange for getting his mask back. In secret Vaati cares nothing about this and believes Link will fail in this task and get blown up with the rest of Termina.

In OoT when Link is sent back to the past it creates two timelines, so each time Link travels back in time in MM he creates an alternate Termina, meaning there are several Terminas where everyone died horribly regardless of whether or not Termina exists outside of Hyrules flow of time.

This would explain both the "Five Stages of Grief" WMG above and why Termina's inhabitants are basically alternative versions of their Hyrulian counterparts. Link is grieving over Navi's departure at the end of OOT and cannot move on properly. His trip in Termina due to Skull Kid's shenanigans gives him a chance to do so.

The area where Link is transformed onto a Deku Scrub has two golden triangles, the two inferior parts of the triforce, i think this means Link has attained Courage and Wisdom, but lacks power, Majora's Mask is focused on side quests which is a different kind of power, the power to help, in OOT link was limited on what he could do to help, here not so much, once link leaves Termina and eventually becomes the Hero's Shade is because he attained Power, Wisdom and Courage.

* It could be that Nintendo focused on the creepiness because that's what WE focus on. Not Tropers, but the big time Majora's Mask fans. They were appealing to the fanbase in the trailer. Whether it will be creepier or not... I think I've heard that the OoT remake toned down some of the creepiness of the original game. I still haven't played the remake, so I can't say for certain.

Notice how all of it's forms are named "Majora's something", but never just "Majora". According to the manga adaptation, the original Majora was a dragon, defeated by an unnamed hero, implied to be the Fierce Deity. That dragon was Demise's counterpart, with the Fierce Deity being the counterpart of the very first Link from Skyward Sword's backstory. The Mask holds a sliver of Majora's essence, like Ganondorf, being a partial reincarnation of a BiggerBad, vanquished long ago.

[[WMG: The game, while also being about grief, is also largely about social perception and relationships à la Rilke's "Faces" and Cooley's theory of "Social Self".]]
The main gist of the game is that by wearing masks, you are treated as if you were someone else, or having certain characteristics- a parody of social standards in real life, like how dressing in more expensive clothing makes you seem more distinguished or successful. But when you look at every character, and the masks you get from those characters, you see that EVERYONE is wearing a 'mask' so to speak. They all hide their true faces behind a persona - Anju tries her best to keep up a warm, friendly demeanor while worried and with a broken heart, the Master Carpenter puts up a front of being angry and boisterous when even he knows there won't be a festival. Often, by resolving their problem and forcing them to drop the facade, you tend to get a physical mask from them. The player isn't just gaining new powers from masks, the gullibility of Termina's social consciousness is so strong that just by looking like a person or concept he gains their powers. The happy mask children at the end, their cryptic words are the summation of this idea presented to you throughout the game- of how your actions influence how other people see you, and in turn how people see you influences your actions to an extent. Majora himself in this world, is an outsider, which befits his wearer- the Skullkid, in that they have no social standing and are utterly alien to the setting. They have trouble building relationships with others, and attempt to force themselves into the community by playing pranks or engaging in mischief. Majora however, is much like a sociopath, unable to understand other people. He can only see their "masks" or the persona they present themselves as, not as the person underneath. Most of his curses are not just cruel tricks, but also him through the Skullkid's perceptions pinning characters to either how they presented themselves or how he viewed them. Link's this annoying Deku forest dweller? Turn him into a deku scrub! That braggart Kafei talking about how he's going to be a man now? He's still just some punk kid. Those big giant jerks that abandoned us? They're just bullies who can't protect anything, let's just turn them into what they really are: monsters that make things worse. The moon children, who are part of Majora itself, are hungry for our masks because they give it a taste of these social connections that it has trouble understanding and unable to grasp- no friends, no connections, no loved ones, and these masks appease that desire. But it also paints a picture of Link to Majora, of this powerful warrior who stops at nothing, and has undone everything he has done. The fierce deity's mask is a mask given by Majora to Link, because just like everyone else, Majora sees Link differently than Link really is. A being from another world, with almost godlike powers and is completely unstoppable. Majora sees link as a "villain" because Majora is incapable of seeing his own actions as wrong, and Link is probably the first thing to ever really scare him, and The Fierce Diety's mask is a representation of how Majora views Link. And in a world where perception is power, that actually makes Link incredibly powerful. The reason why the mask only works in boss fights, is because it only works where Majora's presence is there to perceive him, everyone else views him as merely a young boy.

[[WMG: Termina is a mishmash of various places that the Skull Kid visited before finding Majora's Mask]]
The ambiguously canon ''Hyrule Encyclopedia'' claims that Termina is nothing more than a temporary creation of Majora's Mask, even though the Skull Kid is clearly seen playing in the Southern Swamp before getting it. It is possible that the separate sections of Termina(Termina Field, Snowhead Mountain, Ikana, etc.) do in fact exist in real life, but were spliced together in the Skull Kid's dreamworld. Tying the pieces of this theory together is the fact that the Skull Kid clearly knows his way around the different regions, but the people of the regions themselves rarely interact with another in-game.

Majora's Mask is [[VideoGame/Persona2EternalPunishment Nyarlathotep]], The Moon is Nyx, The Happy Mask Salesman is either Philemon or Igor, and almost everyone in Termina is a Persona User, which would make Link a Wild Card. The Happy Mask Salesman does give you what it essentially your first mask, or in this case, Persona. The themes of Major's Mask and Persona 3 do fit with each other, knowing that death is inescapable.

[[WMG: The Garo are the Terminian counterparts of the Sheikah.]]
It’s simple, really. The Sheikah of Hyrule were shadowy, ninja-like protectors of the Hyrulean Royal Family. The Garo were the shadowy, ninja-like allies of the Ikana Royal Family. Heck, both groups were thought to be completely wiped out save for possibly one member: Impa being a surviving Sheikah is obvious, but the Garo Master from Stone Tower has to use a bomb to remove his corpse, unlike the Garo Ninja that fade away like the ghosts they are. It's possible that the Garo Master was actually alive, unlike his followers that haunt Ikana Canyon.

Link has to defeat its dreamworld avatar (its weak point) to to destroy its illusion and be released. That's why time travel doesn't work, and why the {{Plot Coupon}}s don't disappear- he's too emotionally invested in getting the items, and creating them himself instead of simply carrying around fragments of the world like rupees and trade items. The four giants and the [[spoiler: moon children]] are beings that police the dream world that Majora corrupted or enslaved (or in the case of [[spoiler: the moon children]], [[TheFairFolk may not have been so Lawful in the first place]]). The Great Fairie and other helpful aspects were just bits of his memories (as in the above guess) that Majora or its mask couldn't yet corrupt completely. The ColonyDrop is when Majora finally kills, [[MindRape breaks]], or otherwise makes it impossible for Link to recover, and the Song of time disrupts the spell.

Since the game came out, people have wondered who Majora is, as we only see the titular mask. The happy Mask Salesman was hysterical about getting his mask back - perhaps when he says that it's "MY" mask, he actually means it in more ways than one?
Suppose that Majora was a powerful being long ago, known for causing mass havoc such as was demonstrated in the game. There would, of course, be those who would challenge him, such as the being whose face the Fierce Deity mask is modeled after. Majora beats the Fierce Deity and turns him into a mask, but something he says makes him see the chaos he has caused (Perhaps calling him childish). Majora packs all of his evil and insanity into the mask, as well as the mask he made of the Fierce Deity, to keep it in balance, and just in case somebody finds the mask again. That being done, he becomes the Happy Mask salesman and sets out to spread happiness, to make up for what he had caused.

This theory would explain several things: Why the HMS is seemingly omniscient, why the kids in the Moon looked like him, why the kid wearing Majora's mask would give Link the Fierce Deity mask, with which Link can easily defeat Majora's Mask, and why the HMS is so desperate to get it back - because he knows exactly what it does.

to:

* His first line after Link admits to not having gotten Majora's Mask back is "What have you done to me!?" Even in light of the mask being an ArtifactOfDoom in entirely the wrong hands, this is an odd statement in how personal it is, even for having lost a prized possession. It's almost as if he were suggesting the mask was a part of him...

A mysterious man who instantly knows your situation, moves in erratic, inhuman ways, and has a grudge against Majora? Seems kind of suspicious. He continues assisting with the Goron and Zora while wearing the masks with the Zoras' and Gorons' blessing, letting them know that Darmani and Mikau had died, but peacefully. When he is not workign with the Goron and Zora, he is teaching the Skull Kid how to function in polite society (shown when the Skull Kid's lessons are complete and he goes back to Hyrule to carve his image thing) and help Romani get over what happened, if he wasn't able to save her in the last playthrough (which for the sake of the happy ending, I assume he did). He eventually got all of the quests finished that wouldn't be time-sensitive once Link could escape the three days, stole the package back from Sakon, Anju and Kafei were perfectly happy if not in fact [[spoiler: the correct ages]]... Everyone is happy, except Majora and possibly the Mask Salesman, though he may have eventually gotten the Fierce Deity's mask in exchange for not stealing the others? Eh, he doesn't count anyway. Jerk. And the Skull Kid finds Navi for Link when he returns to Hyrule. Or maybe she was Tatl and Tael the whole time, thanks to Majora, and is both happy and less annoying that way. Anyway, good endings all around. ''Not'' [[labelnote:not]]'''''Not'''''[[/labelnote]] a DownerEnding.

Supporting this theory: All three of this world have many characters who are considered [[{{Expy}} Expies]] of characters from the corresponding preceding game even in-game. It is common for dream dimensions in fiction to have their population based upon people from "the real world". Then, there's the way Link is entering those worlds in all of the three games: In ''Majora's Mask'', he gets a short sequence that looks like childish doodles on speed, and in ''Link's Awakening'', he, well, awakens on the shore of Koholinth Island. ''Phantom Hourglass'' unites aspects of both of this instances, by having Link wake up on a shore after having a pretty acid-like vision of Tetra's light being swallowed by darkness. Another thing that is supporting this theory: the way the Wind Fish and the Ocean King tend to reward Link's helpers. Marin was wishing for wings, Linebeck was wishing for being able to travel the seas in his S.S. Linebeck. Neither of them was wishing to see the "Real World". Yet, both of them suddenly turn up and get their wishes granted in Link's world, after the quest is completed: Marin flies away as an angel/seagull and Linebeck's ship is spoted on the horizon by Link after he and Tetra return. The Wind Fish/Ocean King probably intentionally rewarded them both with "freedom from the boundaries of the dream world", additionally granting their wishes.

In OoT when Link is sent back to the past it creates two timelines, so each time Link Travels back in time in MM he creates an alternate Termina, meaning there are several Termina's where everyone died horribly regardless of whether or not Termina exists outside of Hyrules flow of time.
* However, somehow, the ending fuses them all via the masks you get. Even if you didn't save Cremia and Anju in the last time reset before defeating Majora; they are in the ending; if you have the couples mask.

[[WMG: Similarly, masks in Termina are inherantly powerful and magical. They gain their power upon creation.]]

At the end of Ocarina of Time, we observe Ganondorf using the Triforce of Power to go OneWingedAngel and become Ganon. According to this theory of [[Tropers/EvaUnit01 mine]], the Fierce Deity is, in reality, ''Link's'' OneWingedAngel / SuperMode, using the Triforce of Courage to unleash his full potential at once. The mask, therefore, is nothing more than that - a piece of wood or plastic carved and painted in the shape of a face.... [[ContrivedCoincidence that just happens to be the Fierce Deity's face]]. The reason Link doesn't use this transformation until he gets the mask is because [[BreakingTheFourthWall he's aware of the game mechanics and knows that, in terms of gameplay, he can't transform without a mask]]. In-story, it's because [[GrandFinale until Majora, that was no enemy strong enough that he]] ''[[{{Badass}} might need]]'' his SuperMode in the first place. Why haven't we seen the Fierce Deity in any Zelda game before or since? Because aside from [[EldritchAbomination Majora]], there's never been a villain {{Badass}} enough to warrant his intervention. Onox, Vera, Ganon(dorf), etc. ''were'' genuine threats, rest assured, but Majora's the only one whose true aim was TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt purely ForTheEvulz. He/she/it also came much, ''much'' closer than any enemy before or since. As for why, even when facing Majora, Link only transforms while in the mask? Again, [[MediumAwareness game mechanics]]. In-story? [[AssPull Um...]] BecauseDestinySaysSo? [[FridgeLogic Regarding the child on the moon who]] ''has'' a mask that resembles the Fierce Deity's face.... Hrm... possibly the result of either a StableTimeLoop or TimeyWimeyBall. Reason for this theory in the first place? Purely for RuleOfCool.

It had to be said. There are three Goddesses, with the Triforce that represents them (perhaps unintentionally) evoking the Christian Holy Trinity. Obviously, they're {{God}}. Ganondorf is "only" a human, albeit one who somehow gained a piece of God's power. Not quite Devil material. Then who would be the Zelda Satan? Well, certainly none of the villains who ended up HijackedByGanon. But of those who weren't, Majora has the whole bit of "mocking" God. Three forms: the "Mask", the "Incarnation", and the "Wrath", as a parody of the Holy Trinity. Remember that in TheDivineComedy, Satan himself had three faces in a similar mocking. The NumberOfTheBeast is also a "trinity" (of sixes, in this case) in an attempt to mock God.

Both Ganon and Ikana are the kings of their respective lands, which are located in desert-like lands. Both are large in height, wear topaz jewelry (Ikana's brooch, Ganondorf's head jewel and necklace) and cloth with intricate patterns, and have red hair (in Ikana's case, his beard spikes). In a way, Igos represents what Ganondorf would become in 'Wind Waker': a being who longs for the old days, but has to resign himself to the fact that things will never be as they once were. Only difference is that while Igos just accepted his fate, Ganon would get the whole Triforce and come close to resurrecting Hyrule.

[[WMG: Pamela's father's name is Tortus, and Pamela and Anju are sisters.]]
Admittedly, this theory came from a dream, but ideas are ideas. Tortus's ever-increasing passion for his study of Ikana and the undead was what drove a wedge between him and his family. He felt restless in Clock Town and wanted to move to the canyon, but his wife and older daughter were firmly settled in their lives, and his mother thought he was being foolish (and was too old to travel, anyway). Pamela was only a baby, so she didn't have much to leave behind, and he ended up taking her with him -- it took a lot of convincing, probably a fair amount of pleading, but his ex-wife ''very'' grudgingly allowed him to take his younger daughter with him to his new life. Anju and her mother buried the emotions and moved on with their lives, but Anju gets strangely wistful sometimes, and her mother is never quite free of an underlying bitterness...

* Saria's my favorite Zelda character. As much as it pains me to admit, he blatantly forgot about her. He's definitely searching for Navi, everything points to it, everything stated on the matter by devs and in the game manual, and in-game itself, all point to him searching for Navi. I'd absolutely love it if he really was searching for Saria, but there's nothing whatsoever to indicate he is, and rather everything indicates to him blatantly forgetting about the one person he had left to call his friend in a game heavily centered around the theme of friendship. (We don't even know what happened to his Fairy Ocarina. Presumably he kept it, but there's nothing to suggest he still has it.)

* Entirely possible there were Kokiri in Termina, but its far more likely that they merely traveled between the two worlds, since they live right in the Lost Woods, which has a portal to Termina. They probably didn't go extinct, they just left and didn't come back. Perhaps because the world became too dangerous or the Great Deku Tree of Termina was destroyed, or both.

[[WMG: The Happy Mask Salesman is the [[spoiler: Soul of the Moon]]]]
We know that the moon has some sort of life, as it speaks while [[spoiler: attempting to fall on Termina under Majora's influence]]. But if it's so convinced to destroy all life, then why is it raining moon TEARS? When it speaks, it merely states that it wants to consume all. It's portrayed as a mindless entity, a slave to Majora. So if Majora is controlling it, and it's become mindless, what happened to its consciousness? That's where the Happy Mask Salesman comes in. A mysterious man who instantly knows your situation, moves in erratic, inhuman ways, and has a grudge against Majora? Seems kind of suspicious. The guise of the Happy Mask Salesman isn't his actual appearance, it's just AFormYouAreComfortableWith. He pretends to be after Majora's Mask, but really he's after Majora itself. This is evidenced by simply fading away after Majora's defeat, and when the moon is freed from its influence.

The Happy Mask Salesman is also the only entity in the game who remains after the Moon crushes Termina in a game over, though we don't see his physical form. And who else would be left on the planet? Maybe Majora, and the Moon. However, the HMS is only a fraction of the Moon's Soul. The rest of it, embodied by the Moon Children, has been sealed away in the bosses, which gives them their power. And due to their being sealed away with a mask by a masked Skull Kid, they've come to associate masks with evil, which explains their obsession with obtaining them. They want to take them and destroy them.

So, to recap, HMS is actually the Moon's disembodied soul manipulating you into freeing it to return to its body. The intellectual part, or Ego, split and disguised itself as the Happy Mask Salesman, taking the idea out of Link's Memory. The rest of its mind is sealed away in the Moon Children (Superego) and the Moon itself (Id). Defeating Majora frees them and allows them to control themselves again. HMS never had any intention of reclaiming the mask, he just wanted you to destroy it.
