*In other words, the fighters in Super Smash Brothers For Wii U / 3DS are the real characters from the canon games, legitimately invited to take part in Smash Brothers. There's a scene at the beginning of the Villager's introduction trailer in which he receives a letter stamped with the Smash Brothers emblem, and runs off excitedly by the next cut. This is proof enough that, at the very least, the fighters aren't just magical trophies that come to life when you touch the base.

** A more specific guess: If Simon Belmont is a fighter, his reveal video will have him facing off against Link, Samus, Pit, and Takamaru. Why those four specifically? TheLegendOfZelda, Metroid, KidIcarus, NazoNoMurasamejou, and Castlevania are the first five games that were created exclusively for the Famicom Disk Systems.

If Simon Belmont is a playable character, then it makes sense to have his stage be the iconic setting of the franchise, but even more than that... It's the entirety of the original Castlevania remade as a scrolling stage for Smash Bros, complete with its iconic enemies and bosses, eventually leading to Dracula's Throne Room, before sending the fighters falling back to the start of the stage. It also works as a sort of pun as the stage is Castlevania.

Even taking the Japanese name of the franchise into account still makes the stage name work as both the original game and the castle are Akumajou Dracula or Demon Castle Dracula. In addition, despite Castlevania taking on its iconic form, it ends up being the most chaotic of the stages with its scrolling, hazards and enemies, making it the FightingGame version of ChaosArchitecture.

It'd be a giant Tetris game, with the characters fighting on top of the tetriminoes. They would randomly fall from the top of the stage and collect at the bottom, and occasionally rotate in midair. You would only be able to fall off the stage by being knocked into an empty column.

It would make a perfect side-scrolling stage like Mushroomy Kingdom was in Brawl. It's a staple in almost every Mario game and could incorporate elements from all of them. The initial scrolling portion would be an homage to World 1-4, followed by a chandelier climb reminiscent of VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG. Then the next section would be a run across the parapets while being shot at by Bullet Bills and chased by tanks, a la Super Mario Bros 3. And finally, there would be a big, red door that takes the players to a boss room, in which a random member of the Koopalings will join the fight as a hazard. After the Koopaling takes enough hits, the floor drops out of the stage and returns the players to the beginning of the scrolling part of the level.

Or actually, many people are really just the influence of his power on other worlds. You see, he wants to take over, but he can only project parts of himself into different worlds at a time, and after he had been defeated for the somethingth time (as things like Zero 1/2, Gigyas, Cackletta, etc,) he finally got the idea to, instead of bringing himself to their worlds, he would bring their worlds to him, where he had full power, but he hadn't finished bringing all the pieces together, so they just fought a really strong shadow of himself.

In Super Mario Galaxy, there are two Luigis: the playable one and the one who you rescue and who subsequently finds stars for you. One of them is the "normal" Luigi who has no seemingly occult powers, and the other is the Brawl-playable one who knows the ways of the Negative Zone. As much as it carries the implication that we're not really playing as Luigi in Brawl, or at least not the "true" one, on the other hand, this troper is a fan of Luigi and thinks that he might have gotten a bit too weird in Brawl. I've also mentioned this idea in the WMG page for Super Mario Bros.
