In the Season 2 finale, Libby mentions she had a husband named David who passed away. According to WordOfGod, this is what caused her to have a mental breakdown and be committed. Incidentally, Libby is the only main character who's purpose for being in Australia is never revealed. We do know that she was in the same mental asylum as Hurley, where she was seen creepily staring at him. Later on the island, Hurley claimed to recognize her; she first looked nervous, then made up an unlikely story of Hurley stepping over her on the plane which Hurley didn't remember, and which we don't see in the flashback of him boarding the plane in "The Exodus." In the episode "Dave", Hurley has an "imaginary" friend named Dave when he is in the asylum with Libby, who later reappears when they reunite on the island. Also, Hurley is later revealed to have the ability to talk to ghosts. Coincidence? I think not. I believe Dave was the ghost of Libby's husband David. When Libby was committed, he wanted to deliver a message to her to help her move on. However, she doesn't have the ability to talk to ghosts. So Dave befriended Hurley, the only person in the asylum who had such an ability, hoping to eventually reveal to him that he was a ghost, and get him to deliver his final message to Libby. However, when Libby overheard Hurley talking to an invisible Dave, she correctly guessed he was talking to her dead husband, and became obsessed with him. This obsession eventually turned into love. Dave noticed this and became jealous, and tried to get Hurley to escape the asylum in order to get him away from her, and possibly to get him hit by a car or something. However, when Hurley stood up to Dave, his confidence caused the psychic link between them to break, and Dave stopped appearing to him. After they were released from the asylum, Libby became a StalkerWithACrush. That is why she was in Australia, and why she was travelling on Flight 815. She had always been too nervous to approach him, but then on the island he approached her first, breaking the ice. Of course, she never mentioned any of this to Hurley because she was afraid of freaking him out (she expresses similar concerns in the flash-sideways). When they started dating, Hurley became nervous, and this lack of confidence enabled the psychic connection with Dave to rematerialize. This time, Dave, now insane with jealousy, tried to get Hurley to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. However, when Libby kissed Hurley, it caused him to regain confidence, and the psychic link was once again broken.

After they were released from the asylum, Libby became a StalkerWithACrush. That is why she was in Australia, and why she was travelling on Flight 815. It's also why she kept changing her hair, so Hurley wouldn't recognize her. This would tie in well to her flash-sideways storyline, where she is unambiguously shown to be Hurley's stalker. Except in the flash-sideways, she does work up the courage to approach him and introduce herself. The flash-sideways was a place where the characters got a chance to right the things they had done wrong in their life (Sawyer being a cop, Jin and Sun having a happy relationship, Ben being a good father figure to Alex, etc.) before moving on, and what Libby had done wrong is that she never got over her fear of being judged and talking to Hurley. She finally overcomes this in the flash-sideways, making her complete and ready to move on.

[[WMG: Ana-Lucia is not ready to move on because she hasn't forgiven Michael yet; Michael is raising Walt in New York in the flash-sideways.]]

In the flash-sideways, Desmond tells Hurley that Ana-Lucia is not ready to move on, but doesn't say why. As discussed above, the flash-sideways was a place for the characters to overcome their flaws before moving on. Ana-Lucia's biggest flaw was that she was never able to forgive people and was always seeking revenge. She does overcome this shortly before her death by choosing not to kill "Henry", but then she gets killed by Michael. Eko later tells Michael the story of the boy who killed an aggressive dog, and was then afraid of dying because he didn't want to encounter the dog again in the afterlife. This would explain why Michael's spirit stayed on the island. He's not trapped, he's just afraid of having to face Ana-Lucia in the afterlife. As implied in the epilogue, Walt eventually helps Michael move on. Michael's biggest desire in life was that he wanted to be the one to raise Walt. Since we don't see them on the plane in the flash-sideways, it's probable that Michael got his wish here and is already raising Walt in New York. Eventually he and Ana-Lucia will reunite in the flash-sideways, they will remember each other and Ana-Lucia will forgive him, overcoming her biggest flaw and making both of them ready to move on.

* Christian tells Jack the reason they're there is because their experience on the island was the most important part of their life. Perhaps that isn't true for all of the survivors, and those in this purgatory are the ones for whom it ''is'' true.

*** I had a similar theory: the entire story isn't in Hurley's head per se, but is actually a shared or collective hallucination by various patients in the ward. (It could be the result of telepathy among the patients, or simply the power of suggestion as they tell one another what they are experiencing.) This would explain the odd dreams and visions that various characters, not just Hurley, have on the supposed island.

Come on, so far he's eefused to let Desmond marry Penny, which Ms. Hawking said would lead Desmond to the Island. He's gone to great lengths to keep Desmond and Penny apart, fearing that Desmond would not go to the Island if he went to Penny after prison. But when Desmond needs to talk to Penny to set up the phone call in "The Constant", Charles is quite helpful.
