* '''The MarvelUniverse''': The previous universe suffered a Spiral Nemesis, but one member of a Spiral Lifeform, possessing enough willpower, simply decided that if he should die then he must die with glory. He flew his ship into the heart of the black hole itself, but managed to survive. The Spiral Nemesis collapsed into a quantum singularity, that developed into a Cosmic Egg, then exploded to be reborn into a new Spiral universe. The survivor who flew his ship into the black hole was reborn, now a fundamental Concept of the universe, and needing to consume Spiral Races to keep it alive as much as possible. Galan of Taa. No longer to be used as a trope.

This means that each "Spiral Energy Field", whether it spans a single person or an entire planet, has the potential to "collapse", destroying the beings inside and turning them into energy for beings in another universe. This happens if the entity in question is not {{Badass}} enough to handle the Spiral Energy in their presence, and can potentially happen if a being manifesting enormous amounts of Spiral Energy simply ''runs out of things to fight'' without having a chance to cool down - the Spiral Nemesis is this happening to the entire universe. Manga/{{Uzumaki}} is what happens when a Spiral Field collapses on a single town, while Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann is the epitome of a Spiral Entity maturing. However, there are many cases in between.

[[WMG: The Spiral in TTGL and in Manga/{{Uzumaki}} are two sides of the same coin - and that coin includes many other works as well.]]
Spiral Entities are cosmic beings that seed planets with life, provide them with energy, and upon reaching a certain level of maturity, grant that life reality-warping powers. However, these powers are not free. Each Spiral Entity spans multiple parallel universes, and as long as the Spiral Entity exists, these universes are in competition with each other: energy will be drawn from "less viable" (less awesome) universes in order to empower the beings in "more viable" (more awesome) ones. (Beings with greater willpower are considered more viable to Spiral Entities because Spiral Entities already have access to near-limitless energy - what they need is a being with the willingness and imagination to use it.)

Despite its vast number of possible manifestations (pretty much all magic systems can be reproduced with Spiral Energy, since it can basically do anything), Spiral Entities ''do'' maintain certain recognizable "hallmarks", aside from the obvious spiral motif.

First, a "Projection Effect": High amounts of Spiral Power tends to produce a larger "hard light" body around the user, similar to how the outer parts of a spiral have the same shape as the inner parts, only larger. While the pre-Anti-Spiral-War culture of TTGL's Earth learned to use a weaker version of this effect to create efficient humanoid mecha, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann itself, and especially Super TTGL, are pure hard-light bodies created by raw Spiral Energy.

Projection Effects can also run in reverse: crystallizing the soul of a sentient being into a physical object. This is simply the opposite of the standard Projection Effect - instead of creating a body with the original user in the center, it turns the ''original body itself'' into the "projection". When Simon said "this drill is my soul", he was not using hyperbole - the Core Drill literally manifests from the body of high-level Spiral beings.

Second, an "Assimilation Effect": For better or for worse, Spiral Energy tends to combine living things together. This can be in a gross physical sense (Uzumaki) or in the abstract sense of uniting their souls into one. The ability of Spiral Mecha to combine is based on this effect.

Uzumaki shows other signs of poorly-handled Spiral Energy. The citizens of Kurozu-cho tend to become either extremely excited, aggressive, attention-seeking, or dramatic when "corrupted by the Spiral" - basically the same thing that happens to TTGL's protagonists, but less effective because they don't have a viable target to fight or the willpower to back it up. The Lost Chapter "Galaxies" involves everyone in the city gaining telepathy - another manifestation of the Assimilation Effect. Oh, and Shuichi Saito is an Anti-Spiral drone, similar to Nia - explaining his resilience to the Spiral while still being able to sense it, as well as his generally stoic demeanor. The Anti-Spirals were probably watching the whole thing, but they didn't step in because as long as the effect is properly confined to one planet, they don't really care.

Now, other works that involve contact by a Spiral Entity include:

* Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica: The Incubators are either a race that promotes the development (or "incubation") of Spiral Entities, or the will of the Spiral Entity itself taking on AFormYouAreComfortableWith. They do this by extracting the souls of girls (the Reverse Projection Effect) infusing them with Spiral Energy, and then manipulating them into undergoing a Spiral Field Collapse by pushing them over the DespairEventHorizon. The energy from this collapse is siphoned into other universes, while other magical girls clean up the mess left behind. (Yes, this means that Simon is essentially a Magical Girl and the Core Drill is his Soul Gem.)

* Anime/{{FLCL}}: Medical Mechanica is straight-up the Anti-Spiral (they even descend to Earth in hand-shaped ships). The Spiral Entity in that world is strong enough to gain their attention (N.O. Energy is just Spiral Power), but it hasn't yet reached maturity so they are using less drastic measures like spraying suppressive drugs and mechanically smoothing out spiral-shaped wrinkles from the landscape. The reason they call themselves "Medical Mechanica" is because from their perspective, the Spiral is an "infection" of the planet that they are trying to "cure".

* Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion: Lilith, Adam, and everything related to the First Ancestral Race? All Spiral Entities. Giant Energy Rei is basically the same kind of being as Giant Energy Kamina, a mature Spiral Entity formed from the combined power of the entire human species. The difference is that in Evangelion they were completely assimilated, while in TTGL they were able to merge their willpower instead.

* Anime/AttackOnTitan: Titan Shifters are simply Spiral beings who have enough power to manifest a Projection Effect by themselves.

* Manga/{{Akira}}: Psychic abilities are Spiral manifestations. Tetsuo's mutation is the result of a failed Titan Shift, while his subsequent collapse is basically the same thing that happens to the Witches in Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica, but on a bigger scale - his "labyrinth" became an entire new universe.

* WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse: Gems are a Spiral race that started out as Madoka-type Magical Girls, and eventually learned to project hard-light bodies from their Soul Gems themselves. Eventually they gave up their original bodies entirely, because why bother with meat bodies when you can have a shapeshifting, immortal body of light? Also, they can fuse.

* Anime/DragonBallZ: Saiyans, of course! Aside from the obvious constantly-fight-and-get-stronger-with-willpower qualities typical of Spiral beings, they have the ability to project a giant body and their prehensile monkey tails are likely a manifestation of a spiral on their body.

* Anime/FullmetalAlchemist: Stones made out of souls? Check. Projected beings made out of said stones? Check. Energy siphoned from other universes? Check.

* Anime/OnePiece: This is a particularly weird example, but between the spiral-marked fruits granting special powers, snails that can communicate long-distance, giants of various sizes, and the most powerful known power manifesting as a black vortex, it seems likely that a Spiral Entity is doing ''something'' here.
