Echo is a 2015 PsychologicalHorror VisualNovel developed in UsefulNotes/RenPy by the Echo Project group. The story follows Chase, a river otter and a journalism student, on a reunion with his friends in the down-on-its-luck southwestern desert town Echo (based off the real life town of Echo, UsefulNotes/Utah). He is there to document the town's turbulent history for his college project over the spring break of 2015. At first, the otter is all too happy to reconnect with his old friends, but soon tensions rise as an incident from the past resurfaces and threatens to tear the group apart for good. Chase also comes to realize that Echo may not be all it seems, as unsettling phenomena reveal a more sinister side to the small town he's called home for most of his life.

* DyingTown: The town of Echo has been in a constant state of decline for decades prior to the novel's story. It started out as your typical Gold Rush-era BoomTown that reached its peak population of 6,500 in 1877. Several mass hysteria events lead to numerous residents fleeing over the years. Other contributing factors to the town's decline were the mines shutting down in the 1940s, the railroad branch feeding into the town shutting down in the 60s, and the Interstate highway bypassing the town soon after. By 2015 (the time of the novel's main story), the population was only 50 people, with the town littered with abandoned homes, closed businesses, and disused industry. Most residents commute to the nearby city of Payton for work and school. Echo doesn't seem to have its own hospital or police department either since it's mentioned those resources come from Payton as well. The 2015 hysteria was the final nail in Echo's coffin, with most of the surviving residents leaving for good. VisualNovel/Arches takes place five years after the event and shows Echo as a completely abandoned GhostTown with only two known residents remaining: .
