The ''Trails'' series, known in Japan as the ''Kiseki'' series, is a series of [[EasternRPG turn-based JRPGs]] developed by [[Creator/{{Falcom}} Nihon Falcom]]. The series is the latest entry in their ''[[VideoGame/DragonSlayer The Legend of Heroes]]'' franchise, and by ''far'' the most successful. Building on concepts developed earlier in the ''VideoGame/GagharvTrilogy'', the ''Trails'' series is a sprawling epic taking place on the continent of Zemuria. Despite being a sub-series in its own right, the series itself is actually divided into several arcs; each arc spans multiple games and takes place in a different country on the continent.

Thousands of years ago, Aidios, The Goddess of the Sky, gave humanity the Sept-Terrion, [[RuleOfSeven seven]] sacred treasures which granted dominion over the land, the sea and the skies. About twelve hundred years prior to ''Trails in the Sky'', the cataclysm known as the [[CataclysmBackstory Great Collapse]] brought about the end of the ancient Zemurian civilization. The Sept-Terrion were lost and a dark age descended upon the continent. Five hundred years later, the [[SaintlyChurch Septian Church]] brought back the worship of Aidios and restored peace to the continent. Then, just fifty years before ''Trails in the Sky'', [[OneManIndustrialRevolution Professor C. Epstein]] made a breakthrough in his study of artifacts from the ancient Zemurian civilization, ushering in a rapid wave of industrialization known as the Orbal Revolution.

[[spoiler:This accident is caused by the espionage battle between the Empire and Republic and a lot of Crossbell State citizens were caught in in, including Lloyd's parents and Ian Grimwood's family. The desire for a stronger Crossbell State so they don't become future victims of such espionage efforts is what starts the conspiracy in ''Zero'' and ''Azure''. Some citizens from the Empire and the Republic lost their lives too as Towa mentions that her parents died in that accident as well.]]

** ''VideoGame/KuroNoKiseki'' features the Arkride Solutions Office in the Calvard Republic, a Spriggan agency that serves as an [[UnscrupulousHero unscrupulous]] counterpart to the Bracer Guild and law enforcement. The first game follows Van Arkride as his Spriggan practice evolves from a solo venture to one involving a dedicated cast of characters that are introduced throughout the game. It even recycled character designs from past ''Trails'' games, reused music from other ''Trails'' games, and even reused game code from the first two ''Cold Steel'' installments (namely, Blade, Mishy Panic, the swimming minigame, and the ''Cold Steel II'' version of the fishing minigame are available here, alongside the snowboarding minigame from ''Cold Steel II'' being revamped into a ''skateboarding'' minigame). Also notable in that one particular element in this game is revisited in ''Trails Into Reverie''. It received an UpdatedRerelease called ''Tokyo Xanadu [=eX+=]''.
