* BrokenBridge: Along with Red and Blues roadblocks, the game places further roadblocks on you to force you on a more linear path:
** If you try to go to Cycling Road by going west of Celadon City to get Fly immediately after arriving, your path is blocked off by water. Instead, you have to go west of Fuchsia City to get there, forcing you to go up Cycling Road (slower than going down) to get Fly.
** You can't go to Silph Co. until you've gotten Surf and beaten Koga, due to a bit of water being added by the building.
* FakeDifficulty: The latest version of the game prevents you from using Revives in battle.
* ForcedLevelGrinding: You're all but required to grind on wild Pokémon if you want to beat the game. Fortunately, once you reach Indigo Plateau, you can buy Rare Candies at the low price of P$1, allowing you to get your Pokémon up to level 100 quickly.
* GoddamnedBats: Wild Pokémon that know Self-Destruct and Explosion become this in Mt. Moon and Rock Tunnel. Voltorb is one of these Pokémon, and with its very high speed, you'll have a hard time escaping from it before it explodes on your Pokémon.
* HundredPercentCompletion: Every Pokémon available at the time can be caught in one way or another.
* LethalJokeCharacter: One Bug Catcher on Route 6 uses a level 100 Weedle, at a point where your Pokémon will probably only be in their mid to high 20s. Due to the large level difference, even a Pokémon that resists its Poison Sting will take a lot of damage from it.
* NintendoHard: It wouldn't be a Kaizo game if it wasn't this.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Team Rocket gets much stronger and more threatening Pokémon.
* OlympusMons: Your rival gets a as his starter. Later in the game, when you face Giovanni for the last time, he has a [[spoiler:Zapdos and Mewtwo]].
* Retcon: In Red and Blue, Professor Oak had a Dummied Out battle which was possibly intended as a Bonus Boss. Here, .
* TheComputerIsACheatingBastard: The have .
* TheMaze: Many areas become this. Even Route 7, the shortest route in Red and Blue, becomes a small maze.
* ThatOneLevel: The Safari Zone is this. In order to get Surf, you need 499 of the 500 available steps, meaning that one mistake will force you to start back from the beginning. The Gold Teeth requires another, separate path that's slightly more lenient, requiring 475 steps at minimum.
** Viridian Forest becomes a maze which is made entirely of grass which gives you random encounters. The game's encounter rate is very high, and since you can't get Repels at this point, you'll be encountering wild Pokémon every few steps.
** You're forced to go upwards Cycling Road to get Fly. Not only is going upwards Cycling Road slower than going down, it also becomes a maze that requires you to face every trainer, and you can't go to Fuschia City's Pokémon Center until you've gotten Fly, which means that you'll be going through it after having already been weakened by the trainer marathon of Routes 12 through 15.
