''Ni no Kuni'' is an {{RPG}} developed by [[{{Creator/Level5}} Level-5 Studios]]. After all the comments calling both the animation and art style of the ''Professor Layton'' games "Ghibliesque", Level-5 decided to one-up the peanut gallery by actually teaming up with Creator/StudioGhibli on the game. While the gameplay is designed by Level-5, all the character designs, lushly animated {{cutscene}}s, and even the soundtrack (composed by the legendary Joe Hisaishi) are all pure Ghibli. Needless to say, this has made a lot of people very excited about it from the get-go. Its NintendoDS version was released in Japan on December 2010, with the PlayStation3 version released in 2011 in Japan (plus a cell-phone prequel). The American and European release is in early 2013.

The next morning, Oliver (not surprisingly) holes up in his room and begins to cry. His tears fall on a [[UglyCute crude yet lovable]] doll his mother gave him, and [[SwissArmyTears set the spirit inside free!]] The spirit, named Shizuku, reveals to Oliver that he's from the "Another World"--a place closely linked to Oliver's town. There, an evil sorcerer has taken a sage named Alyssa hostage. Alyssa and Allie are linked, and if Alyssa is saved, then there's a chance Allie will be, too. Shizuku gives Oliver a magic book, and Oliver sets out into the world of Ni no Kuni in order to save his mother.

Oh, and did we mention? By giving Oliver a spellbook, we mean giving the ''player'' a spellbook. As in, an actual 392-page spellbook that comes with the game. Level-5 & Ghibli aren't cutting ''any'' corners.

----
!!This game provides examples of:

* [[spoiler:AllDeathsFinal]]
* [[BannedInChina Banned In Korea]]: Due to the CasinoPark, it is rated Adult-only there. Even with the strict European laws about gambling it got a +12 rating there.
* {{Boss Subtitles}}
* BonusDungeon: Moya Island in the DS version had a 100-floor tower accessed with ItemCrafting of all things, with all-new more powerful enemies and PaletteSwap of bosses that will mop the floor with your Lv.99 party if you aren't careful enough. Shazar is awaiting you at the last floor, and he is on-par with BonusBoss from the Persona series, a welcome change from the easy main quest. There is another pirate BonusDungeon hidden in a star-shaped island.
** It was replaced in the PS3 version with a portal to the FinalDungeon, but its monsters were reused at various points, like many other BonusBoss from the DS game. Shazar himself was reused as TheDragon for the [[FinalBoss White Witch]], but was considerably Nerfed (he has no longer two phases): another BonusBoss (who can be faced after clearing all other boss rematches) replaced him as the ultimate challenge.
** To make up for it, the PS3 version added some dungeons: the one at the island of the Fairies (with Drippy/Shizuku's siblings, seen in the trailer), three as DarkWorld counterparts of corrupted locations of Ninokuni, and the [[FinalBoss White Castle]]. It explains the whereabouts of the mysterious knights, and adds more music tracks and expands upon existing cutscenes.
* BraggingRightsReward: The OneHitKill ultimate light spell in the DS game: You get it when you defeat Shazar, but there is nothing else left to do in the game.
* ChildMage: Oliver.
* CopyProtection: A rather old-school variation, via the included [[{{Feelies}} feely]]. To do certain things in the game, you need to refer to the book included with the game and see the corresponding page for the current situation. Without it, you can't proceed normally, and if you try to use Oliver's book, it says that you need to see the physical book instead.
* DarkWorld: Ni no Kuni ''is'' one for Earth, or at least, Oliver's town. Affecting one will affect another--early demos describe an angry cat-king, who gets less grumpy when a similarly-patterned cat in town gets taken care of.
** A literal DarkWorld appear shortly after the PS3-exclusive arc begins due to a dark cristal [[spoiler: in all three major cities, and everyone there (aside from children, oddly missing) there are turned into zombies you fight. [[IGotBetter They get better shortly before the Final Dungeon though.]]]]
*** In the DS version, there is also a DreamWorld you get to as Oliver alone, when you go to inns. You can solve some riddles there using the book. [[spoiler:There is also a BonusBoss there, on-par with late Moya Tower bosses]].
* [[spoiler:DeadAllAlong: Alicia, since she is Allie. Cue HeroicBSOD from Oliver.]]
* DeadLittleSister: For Natius. [[spoiler:He eventually abandons all hope in humanity and, under the influence of the white witch, becomes the BigBad Jabo]].
* DiscOneFinalDungeon: Inevitably, since the PS3 version added a story arc, this was the case with the Nameless Castle, Jabo's lair, which was the FinalBoss in the DS version.
* DubNameChange: Drippy for Shizaku, Esther for Maru, and Motorville for Hotroit. Among other monster and town names.
* DummiedOut : A close inspection of the DS version reveals the book was once planned to be included in the game, as there is a button for the "Rune Book" in the beta. Many graphics for scenes that were included only in the PS3 version went unused as well. In turn, the PS3 version left out the (animated!) cutscene from the DS version for when Oliver first enters Ninokuni.
* [[spoiler:EverythingsDeaderWithZombies]]: Due to the corrupting influence of a dark cristal. [[CharacterDevelopment Buhiden]], the Emperor of Borg Empire, joins your party to try to reverse this.
* EvilTwin: Oliver has one, [[spoiler: Jabo.]]
* ExpositionFairy: Shizuku. Understandable, of course, since he is Oliver's only speaking companion in Ni no Kuni.
* {{Feelies}}: An ''epic'' version: The game comes with a 390-or-so page spellbook called ''The Magic Master,'' which contains in-game spells, Imagine stats, potions recipes, and lots more. Some people have naysayed ''Ni no Kuni's'' chances of an oversees release due to the difficulty of translating this book, but Level-5 is opening a North American branch (perfect for tackling a big localization) and Level-5 themselves have stated that they hope to bring this game (along with several of their other offerings) to foreign soil.
** And they're translating the book in-game and including it physically in the [[http://store.namcobandaigames.com/store/namcous/en_US/pd/productID.253168700 Wizard's Edition.]] (Also in Australia with the EB Games Exclusive edition). Granted, as it is still needed to progress through the game.
* GhibliHills: What did you honestly expect?
* HeroicBSOD: Oliver gets one when he learns out that [[spoiler: Alicia and Allie, his deceased mother, were in fact the same person.]] He continues nonetheless his quest to SaveTheWorld from Jabo (and the White Witch in the PS3 version).
* HijackedByGanon
* HopelessBossFight: The lava female monster, if you go directly to the Volcano Summit before going first to the Cave of Trials.
* IllGirl: Mari, in her Real World form, is one of these. (In Ni no Kuni, she's the plucky sidekick lass.)
* ItemCrafting: You can do it anytime after battling the genie. Needed to get better items for a reasonable price. Later, you'll have to do this to create dungeon floors.
* KidHero
* LionsAndTigersAndHumansOhMy: Ni no Kuni, naturally. The standout is probably the cat king.
* MeaningfulName: "Shizuku" is Japanese for "drop", as in the [[SwissArmyTears teardrop that brought him to life]].
** Not to mention his general shape is reminiscent of a teardrop.
* MissingMom: Ripped right out from under our noses! Ouch.
* {{Mons}}: The Imagines.
* MultipleEndings: The DS game has a hard-to-get extra ending for clearing the Moya Tower BonusDungeon.
* NoExportForYou: The original DS version with the spellbook is only available in Japan due to the complex spellbook included with the game. Also the two cell-phone prequels. Averted for the PS3 version, slated for North American and European release in 2013 with all the DLC and extras from the Japanese re-release version.
* OneGameForThePriceOfTwo: According to the developers, the PS3 and DS versions will be different enough that playing both might be necessary to get the "whole" story (each version expandes some existing scenes and has exclusives). There's also a cell phone prequel.
* ParentalAbandonment: Oliver.
* PetInterface: The Imagines can be taken care of in a special screen which allows you to feed, pet, and play with them.
* PigMan: There's a whole ''army'' of them.
** Though they aren't actually pigs. They're men with pig helmets. [[VideoGame/{{Mother 3}} Does that remind you of anything?]]
* SceneryPorn: This is the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEsJpRpn4Pg PS3 trailer]]. Note especially at around 0:45. There are two frames: the upper one shows the pre-rendered form, and the lower one shows the real time form. They are practically the same. In other words, you will be ''walking through a Ghibli movie.'' Not that the DS version is any slouch--the DS does cell-shading well, and it features the same sort of hand-painted look for its maps.
* ShoutOut:
** One of the bosses is a pig-tank called [[{{PorcoRosso}} Porco Grosso]].
** In the PS3 version only, the cutscenes where everyone attack the FinalDungeon are oddly reminiscent of Laputa.
** The translated [=PS3=] version feature british children transported to another world filled with talking animals and an evil white witch. [[TheLionTheWitchAndTheWardrobe Stop me if you've heard this one before]].
