The game takes from where ''VideoGame/NarutoShippudenUltimateNinjaStorm3'' left off, mid-way through the Fourth Shinobi World War, and covers through the end of the manga storyline, including its GrandFinale. Also, it creates some original story content that partially covers the gap between Chapter 699 and the {{canon}} movie ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie''.

Decided to move the entire section to YMMV, because it's not so clear cut. While I'd say it's a general trend that the more recently a character has been added, the more powerful and competitively viable they are, this isn't a hard-and-fast rule.

* PowerCreep: While some legacy characters like Neji, Pain, Nagato and Danzo remain competitively viable and see frequent play, a lot of fighters returning from previous ''Storm'' games tend to have rather underpowered toolkits compared to newcomers.
** THE LAST Naruto and Sasuke brought with them the Inferno Fireball and Rasengan Super Barrage respectively. The former can be used in the air, has a large hitbox and enormous priority, destroying almost all other projectiles in its path. The latter sends out two fast-moving clones or, when charged, four clones, which are amazing for pressure and lock your opponent out of doing much besides blocking or jumping to avoid the attack.
** Kaguya can transport you to a lava dimension where all the attacks of her grounded combo become unblockable. She was immediately banned from tournaments.
** Tayuya's unique mechanic allows her to use her Dokis to deal damage at various ranges, but also as meat shields to tank attacks and block dashes. Dokis have infinite health and get staggered for only a moment when hit, making them much more reliable than other remote-controlled characters such as puppets or Akamaru. Unsurprisingly, Tauyua is also banned in tournaments.
** Many tilt attacks from ''Storm Revolution'' onwards have interesting properties and much better utility. While the tilts of characters like Rock Lee, Jiraya, Suigtetsu, Sai and many others amount to little more than slow, mid-ranged attacks which knock down or push away the enemy, Rampaging Obito's tilt makes him run across half the stage at great speed while completely invulnerable and can be instantly cancelled into his combo at any time. Other highlights include Sarada's tilt - a trap which, when stepped into, staggers for a good second and leaves the opponent standing, making it easy to follow up with a combo or Secret Technique.
** Rinne Sharingan Sasuke's grab has a generous vertical hitbox and an insane amount of active frames. It lasts so long, that as opposed to trying to hit the opponent, many players activate it preemptively and wait for their enemy to run into it. While its horizontal range is only decent, no other grab in the series can compare in terms of duration.
** Six Paths Madara's awakening gives him access to four Limbo clones which can be made to throw spears or charge at the enemy. These attacks have no cooldown and let Madara move freely as they happen. Defending against or dodging this is nearly impossible, as hitting Madara will not interrupt the attacks of his clones. You guessed it, entering this awakening is also banned in tournaments.

Added a trope for Power Creep, as the moves and jutsus of newer characters tend to skew much more towards the competitively viable side, some being downright overpowered and banned in tournaments.

I find the claim that the tag system is similar to Capcom vs. games (or derivatives like the Skullgirls tag system) to be misleading. Most notably, characters do not have separate health bars, meaning players are not expected to make strategic choices about who to put in the line of fire.

* TagTeam: The first game in the series to feature this, replacing the old Assist character mechanic from previous ''Storm'' games. Its execution is nearly identical to VideoGame/CapcomVs games.

* JerkassRealization: Sakura, Ino, and Tenten all get hit with this during the "Angels and Demons" sidequest. They try to tell Hinata about how unthoughtful and childish Naruto can be, among other issues, but Hinata remembers moments from the examples they give that say otherwise. She turns all of Naruto's bad qualities into good ones, shocking the girls by how accepting of him she is. The girls finally realize what jerks they are for badmouthing Naruto, and consider Hinata to be an angel compared to them, which is where the title of the sidequest ties in.
