* KeystoneArmy: In Mission 18, you have to fight [[HumanChess a demonic chessboard]] set. If the Damned King is destroyed, the rest of the board pieces self-destruct. This is harder than it sounds; not only do the other pieces continually attack you, but both of the Damned Rooks must be killed first or the King will simply switch places with one (as a nod to castling) every time you try to hit him.

* HumanChess: The game has you fighting an entire demonic chessboard set in Mission 18. Each life-sized Damned Chessmen piece behaves in ways appropriate to their real-game counterparts.
** The Pawns take small steps (though they can change direction) and attack not only to the front, but to the back diagonally (as a reference to how a pawn attacks diagonally and the move "en passant." They can also be promoted.
** Knights can jump over the pieces and attack by landing on Dante (other pieces will try and fail to move through other pieces).
** The King can only attack in his immediate area, and killing him [[KeystoneArmy destroys every other piece on the board]], but if he's attacked while the Rooks are alive, he'll switch places with them when hit, as a nod to castling.
** The Queen can move diagonally and horizontally the full length of the board (though, ironically, this, along with the cackle she makes when she moves, allows her to be the most easily avoidable).
** Rooks and Bishops also only move and attack along their normal counterparts' paths.
* HumanPincushion: In the Mission 1 cutscene, Dante is interrupted in eating a slice of pizza by a large group of scythe-wielding Hell demons warping in around him and turning him into an inhuman "scythecushion"... up until Dante ''grins'', walks a few steps dragging the demons still holding onto their scythes, and proceeds to kill every single one of his attackers with the scythe blades that are still stuck in him!
* HurricaneKick: With the Beowulf Devil Arm, there's a move that's literally called Hurricane Kick (or Tornado, depending on the version) and involves spinning kicks in mid-air. For bonus points, it's a follow-up to Real Impact, a {{Shoryuken}} move that involves [[ArtisticLicenseMartialArts stopping in mid air twice while ascending]].

* EarlyBirdBoss: The Hell Vanguard in Mission 2. On your first playthrough, the real difficulties of this fight come from the playable character's lack of upgrades as early as this point, and the Hell Vanguard's gimmick of parrying your own melee attacks to execute a CounterAttack on you (which deals significant damage). That being said, they later on become [[DegradedBoss just another elite enemy, spawning along other enemies and even along other Hell Vanguards]]. Once Dante does re-encounter them, he's got plenty of arsenal and upgrades with him, and will generally dispatch of them more easily.
