A set of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean and Scotia Sea southeast of Argentina and the Falkland Islands and northeast of Antarctica, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a British Overseas Territory. The islands are remote and inhospitable, lacking a permanent human population with most of the people here being members of the British Antarctic Survey, and the largest island, South Georgia, houses the territory's capital, King Edward Point, and its largest settlement, Grytviken.

The coat of arms consists of a shield (lozengy argent and azure, on a pile vert a lion rampant or, armed and langued gules, holding a torch or, inflamed gules, and in chief two estoiles or), a reindeer crest, as supporters a fur seal and a macaroni penguin, and the motto Leo Terram Propriam Protegat ("Let the lion protect its own land").

The islands were governed as part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies until they were split into their own territory in 1985, with the administrative center and residence being established at King Edward Point on South Georgia in 1909. The Argentinians claimed South Georgia in 1927 and the South Sandwich Islands in 1938, and one of the sparks of UsefulNotes/TheFalklandsWar was set here when a group of Argentinian marines disguised as scrap metal merchants occupied the abandoned whaling station at Leith Harbour on South Georgia and then attacked and captured Grytviken on the 3rd of April, 1982. The island was later recaptured by British forces on the 25th of April in Operation Paraquet, though Argentina still claims sovereignty over the territory.
