* YouSoundFamiliar: In the Canadian French dub, Miles Axlerod is voiced by Creator/AlainZouvi, who previously reprised his roles as [[Franchise/ToyStory Woody]] and [[WesternAnimation/MonstersInc Mike Wazowski]] in the first movie's end credits scene.

*** Creator/DaveWittenberg replaced Creator/EddieIzzard as Miles Axelrod.

** The Latin dub has at least three changes from this sequel onwards.

** Rosalba Sotelo replaces Creator/KateDelCastillo as Sally after dubbing her in the first film and in the short film ''Mater and the Ghostlight''.
** Simone Brook takes the reins from Roxana Castellanos in the part of Flo.
** Creator/CarlosSegundo does not reprise his role of Darrell Cartrip and is replaced by Idzi Dutkiewicz.

** It's generally assumed that Disney forced Pixar to make this sequel for merchandising purposes. Not so; the ''Cars'' universe is John Lasseter's pet project. It's also noteworthy that the executives at Disney really couldn't have forced John Lasseter to do anything, since, as of 2006, John Lasseter ''is'' the executive at Disney. So ultimately it's more AuteurLicense than ExecutiveMeddling, with TheMerch being more of the reason nobody at Disney ''objected'' to making it.

* DuelingMovies: In a way with ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda2''. While both were very successful, DWA was able to clearly K.O. Pixar on this one when ''Cars 2'' was critically-panned and hit hard by {{Sequelitis}}, starting Pixar's first AudienceAlienatingEra, while ''Kung Fu Panda 2'' became a major hit for [=DreamWorks=]… though that studio would end up in their own more severe Audience-Alienating Era shortly thereafter.

* MultipleLanguagesSameVoiceActor: Creator/FrancoNero and Creator/VanessaRedgrave voice Uncle Topolino and the Queen, respectively, in the English and Italian releases.

* OldShame: Many at Pixar have admitted that this film was short of the studio's usual best.

* DevelopmentGag: In Paris, Mater encounters a car whose eyes are placed where her headlights should be, and drives off in horror. In the first ''Cars'' film's early development, the characters were originally designed with their eyes placed on their headlights, but the creators found these designs [[UncannyValley unintentionally scary]] and decided that putting the eyes on their windshields looked more expressive and visually appealing.

* DuelingMovies: In a way with ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda2''. While both were very successful, DWA was able to clearly K.O. * WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Doc Hudson was supposed to have a major role for this film. The death of his voice actor reduced these plans.
** Even after Newman's death, Lasseter had considered a recurring subplot focusing on how Doc's passing affected both Lightning and Mater, though this in the finished film this is relegated to one scene between the two in Hudson's museum and is never brought up again. The creators later decided to revisit this subplot in [[WesternAnimation/Cars3 the next film]].
** In early development, Rip Clutchgoneski was killed instead of spinning out when hit by the Lemons' radiation beam. [[MeaningfulName Hence his name,]] Rip (R.I.P) Clutchgoneski (Clutch gone to the sky).
** Originally, the main antagonist was going to be [[http://worldofcarsdrivein.wikia.com/wiki/Zil Zil]]. His model was based on a racecar that did poorly in the Soviet Union, which would indicate that he was meant to be Russian.
** There was also a character named [[http://worldofcarsdrivein.wikia.com/wiki/Giulia Giulia]], who was a double agent that might have later pulled a HeelFaceTurn. She wound up getting replaced by Holley Shiftwell.
** The race in Tokyo was originally intended to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4VmexcNrMo be much longer]], feature a tie between Lightning and Francesco, and would not have been intercut with scenes featuring Mater and the spies.

* CreatorKiller: The film's critical failure more-or-less caused John Lasseter [[KickedUpstairs to step down from the director's chair]], giving the director positions in ''WesternAnimation/Cars3'' and ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory4'' to Brian Fee and Josh Cooley, respectively. With the news of Lasseter's sexual misconduct allegations in 2017 resulting in his resignation from Disney and Pixar, this will likely end up being the last film Lasseter ever directed.

* MultipleLanguagesSameVoiceActor: Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave voice Uncle Topolino and the Queen, respectively, in the English and Italian releases.
