* Using the primal elements of magic in this world require the user to know the appropriate word in dragon tongue, much like how it is in ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim'' in regards to Dragon Shouts.

* The idea of humans using magical creatures as fuel for magic and being walled off from part of the continent for it is also an important part of Marjorie Liu's ''ComicBook/{{Monstress}}. The biggest difference, though, is that her race is decidedly the ''good guys'' in this whole debacle, and her only moral quandary with them is that she's a ProudWarriorRaceGuy who can't bring herself to kill other people (which is really more a problem of her being in the wrong profession than anything else).

* There are a few shout-outs to ''VideoGame/DarkSouls''. In episode 7, the Dagger and the Wolf, a rather large man is brandishing a ludicrously large sword similarly to the multitude of enemies with menacingly large swords encountered in Dark Souls.
** In the end credits of episode 8, The Cursed Caldera, one of the images is of Ava (and Bait) holding a sword with her mouth identically to Greatwolf Sif.
* Bait walking on during the intro to say "Ba Bum" after looking at the Netflix title.

* Rayla sometimes holding her blades in a ReverseGrip may be a reference to Ahsoka Tano from ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'', another show that Giancarlo Volpe worked on. Lesser so to another show he worked on, ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'', in which firebenders could form "fire daggers" in their fists as if they were holding them in ReverseGrip.
