** The treatment of Elizabeth by Francis borders on emotional abuse, and Verity is given little to no freedom by her male family members. Demelza claims that she is beaten regularly by her father and brothers when she meets Ross.

* AgeLift: Demelza is 13 at the start of the first book, and she seems to be closer to 17 in the show, which is good as she has sex with Ross in episode 3. In fact, in the book four years have passed and Demelza is indeed 17 when she is married

* VillainousRescue: The last episode of series 5, [[spoiler:George saves Ross from being shot, by [[GunsAkimbo shooting both men]] that are holding him at gunpoint.

''Poldark'' is an ongoing Creator/{{BBC}}1 series that first aired on March 2015 adapted from a twelve novel series by Winston Graham and is the second such adaptation of the books. It follows the story of Ross Poldark, a young gentleman who returns home from war to find his father dead, his estate in ruins, and his sweetheart (Elizabeth) married off to his cousin (Francis).

* AgeLift: Demelza is 13 at the start of the first book, and she seems to be closer to 17 in the show, which is good as she has sex with Ross in episode 3.

* LawOfInversePaternity: It would be better for everyone involved if [[spoiler: Elizabeth's baby was her new husband George's]]. Naturally, [[spoiler:it's assumed to be Ross's though no one will ever know for sure]].

* ShellShockedVeteran:
** Oddly averted with Ross, who may not be a bundle of laughs but he doesn't appear to suffer from any mental anxiety as a result of his military service.
** [[spoiler:Dwight Enys]] does suffer from PTSD, after his [[spoiler:rescue from a prisoner of war camp in France]].

* LawOfInversePaternity: It would be better for everyone involved if [[spoiler: Elizabeth's baby was her new husband George's]]. Naturally, [[spoiler:it's Ross's]].

* MamasBabyPapasMaybe: [[spoiler: Elizabeth's pregnancy in series 3 could be as a result of her new marriage to George Warleggan or her night with Ross. The baby, Valentine Warleggan, arrives too early to be George's and [[ChocolateBaby has black hair]], implying he is Ross's son.]]

* ImpoverishedPatrician: Morwenna's branch of the BlueBlood Chynoweth family are poor. She is expected to marry a rich man to support her and is advised by Aunt Agatha and Demelza not to become attached to Drake because [[UnableToSupportAWife she cannot marry him]]

* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler: Osborne Whitworth dies when the vengeful husband of Morwenna's sister, who has been having an affair with Whitworth to extort him for money, attacks him one night in the forest, causing Whitworth to fall from his saddle and be dragged to his death by his panicking horse. As he's an abusive husband and a rapist, virtually no tears are shed from him. Morwenna even says outright that the only thing she feels about his death is relief that she's free of him]].

* FelonyMisdemeanor: In episode 3 of season 4, the first speech we see Ross give as an MP calls out the British legal system on this—specifically, its legendarily long (at the time) list of hangable offenses.

* DyingCurse: Nat Pearce lands one on Reverend Whitworth in retaliation for cursing him so casually and callously. [[spoiler:Sure enough, the curse is fulfilled before the episode is over.]]

** Reverend Whitworth's attempt to have Morwenna committed on grounds of sinfulness-induced insanity falls flat on account of King George III having recently gone mad himself.

* RealityEnsues: George's actions as magistrate in series 3 end up costing him key support from a prominent local politician who happens to be fed up with the terrible conditions the working class was already facing.

* BelligerentSexualTension: Dwight and Caroline in Season 2, especially whenever he has to examine her throat.

** Jud accuses Ross of being the father of Jinny's child. It doesn't end well for him, and is also completely unfounded.
** Dwight and Keren.

* MaritalRapeLicense: Whitworth repeatably rapes his wife [[spoiler: Morwenna]] and states his belief that she has no right to refuse him.
