* HardTruthAesop: One episode sees Hush Puppy entering a sweepstakes to win a new bicycle, and despite being one of the main characters, he loses and ends up quite upset. Shari comforts him and explains that losing is a part of life, and you don't always get what you want even if you want it very badly. It's a surprisingly somber message for the usually-lighthearted show.

Added DiffLines:

* BigEater: Hush Puppy loves food and frequently gets excited at the prospect of a meal. In one episode, he excitedly describes the contents of a picnic he's planning; in another, he says that his favorite part of a birthday party was the cake; and in "Buster and Butch the Bully," he ventures into ExtremeOmnivore territory when he eagerly starts eating ''the gum under Buster's seats.'' It might be a sly pun on the fact that Hush Puppy is named after food himself.

* YouAreGrounded: In the episode about the school talent show, Charlie Horse gets grounded for having lied about the age limit to participate in said talent show; he claimed that only students 8 years old and up could do so and Lamb Chop initially thought she could not perform in it as a result until she found out that this was not the case.

* CallingParentsByTheirName: Event though Shari refers to Lamb Chop, Charlie Horse and Hush Puppy as her kids, and they describe themselves as siblings, they always call her "Shari," not "Mom." Justified, since all four of them are different species, so the puppets clearly [[HappilyAdopted aren't Shari's biological children.]]

** Lamb Chop does it again in the episode "I'm Back!" because she thinks [[NotSoForgottenBirthday everyone forgot her birthday]], but quickly comes back on her own. To make her feel better, Shari asks Charlie Horse to be extra nice to her. Later, she reveals that Hush Puppy ran away with her, and is in hiding because of his own issues. Much to Charlie Horse's dismay, Shari asks him to be extra nice to Hush Puppy as well. Charlie Horse agrees on one condition: Tomorrow, it will be his turn to run away. After he leaves, Shari simply shrugs, and [[BreakingTheFourthWall suggests to the audience]] that maybe the following day should be her turn.

* EdutainmentShowCouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: In "The Ring," Lamb Chop plays dress-up with some of Shari's clothes, including a veiled hat, a pair of gloves, and the titular jewelry. She then goes off to bake some cookies, only to discover that ring has vanished. She, Hush Puppy, and Charlie Horse deduce that it must have fallen into the cookie dough, and the boys "generously" offer to eat all of the sweets to find it. A few minutes and two large tummyaches later, they still haven't found the ring, making Lamb Chop panic...and that's when Shari enters wearing it. It turns out that the jewel had slipped into the finger of one of the gloves, which Lamb Chop never bothered to check.
