* AllYourPowersCombined: The Centipede device from the pilot is [[spoiler: a combination of gamma radiation (''The Hulk''), super soldier serum (''Captain America''), alien tech (the Chitauri), and Extremis (''Iron Man 3'').]] It's lampshaded that it seems like whoever is behind it took whatever elements they had that could contribute to giving someone superpowers and threw them in a blender.

* BurningBuildingRescue: The first scene of the pilot. But we later realize there's more to the rescue than just saving an innocent woman.

* JustPlaneWrong: The custom SHIELD transport plane has an extra pair of engines hanging on the tail, directly behind the engines on the wings and consequently sucking in their ''hot exhaust'', which is really bad for jet engines.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In the pilot, Skye encourages Mike Peterson to embrace his powers and try becoming a full-on public superhero. He takes it to heart [[spoiler:- seeing himself as the hero and everyone opposing him as the bad guy.]]
* OnlyMostlyDead: Agent Coulson explains that he (just barely) survived Loki's attack in ''Film/TheAvengers''.

And [[spoiler:Mike Peterson had this as his motivation for volunteering for superpowers: he'd failed to live up to being just a man, being unable to provide for his family; how can he stand against gods and giants?]]

** After Agent Ward confirms he has Level Six clearance and says he ''knows'' Agent Coulson was killed prior to the Battle of New York. (If you watch the trailer not knowing the FirstEpisodeSpoiler).
