** Christine Daaé from ''ThePhantomOfTheOpera'' is an excellent singer and dancer, but during the opera house's MasqueradeBall she is scared and confused after being whisked away from her fiancée Raoul. She tries to keep up with the whirling dancers, but her moves are hesitant and she is always slightly behind. Raoul does find her again, for which she is very grateful.

The name is a {{tropemanteau}} of "luminous" and "ice". This trope can actually happen in RealLife because snow and ice reflect light very well, meaning that on a snowy night you may not need a torch. Expect this trope to feature in the SlippySlideyIceWorld too. If the ice caverns are deep in a mountain, this trope might be implied by HollywoodDarkness.

* CropOffTheEyes: Eyes are the WindowsOfTheSoul, and making eye contact in conversation is important. A way to hide someone's identity, then, is to show their face talking from the nose down. On the typical landscape screen this can mean their body below the shoulders is also cropped away, giving strong focus to their mouth and whatever they are saying. SisterTrope to FeetFirstIntroduction.
** Tanna from ''Webcomic/EarsForElves'' is introduced this way. The panel that first shows her face gives only her nose and mouth with a speech bubble, though her eyes are shown shortly afterwards.
** In ''WebVideo/EchoChamber'', Mr Administrator never breaks this in the first season, and still maintains it for most of the second. It is part of what makes him a MysteriousEmployer, forces Tom and Dana to pay attention to whatever he says, and hides who he is (specifically, it hides [[spoiler:the numbers on the temple of any incarnation of the Administrator]]) throughout the show.
** The wheelchair man from the ''Series/DoctorWho'' episode [[Recap/DoctorWhoS28E5RiseOfTheCybermen "Rise of the Cybermen"]] is introduced this way, ensuring we know he's evil right from the start. It's only a couple seconds until his whole face is shown, though.
** Dr. Space Claw of ''Theatre/{{Starship}}'' is first seen through a video connection. He's [[SlouchOfVillainy slouching]] in a chair and only shown from the neck down, as is his new wife, which hides that he is [[spoiler:Junior]]'s father and establishes him as the "most evil man in the universe".
** Darcy's first in-the-flesh appearance in ''WebVideo/TheLizzieBennetDiaries'' consists of a couple seconds at the end of one video, surprising her. His eyes are off the top of the screen, so viewers were kept in suspense about who he was and what he looked like for several days.

* FingersOfGod: "Fingers of God" is one of many names given to [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crepuscular_rays crepuscular rays]], a natural phenomenon in which sunlight appears to burst through clouds in distinct beams. In fiction, this shows glory at the AwesomeMomentOfCrowning, beauty in ThePromisedLand, and hope shining during the DarkestHour. It can overlap with CueTheSun or cause a NaturalSpotlight.
** Clouds part to let streams of sunshine through onto the cub Simba when Rafiki holds him in the air during the opening of ''Disney/TheLionKing''.
** At the climax of ''Series/DoctorWho'' episode "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS31E06TheVampiresOfVenice The Vampires of Venice]]", the clouds are roiling and storming and getting darker every minute as the end of humanity draws near. When the Doctor shuts off the storm controller to save the world once again, the clouds dissipate and sunbeams burst through as people celebrate.

* IShallWearARedHat: The elderly wear purple. Lavender. Beige. Grey. From top to toe, they're normally dressed in dull colours (even the odd floral print on a lady won't be adventurous) and old fashions. However, sometimes they step out of the mold. ** "Carpe Noctem" ("Seize the Night") from ''Theatre/TanzDerVampire'' starts with a couple verses sung high by a single vampire. There is some accompaniment, but it is not thickly textured. ''Then'' the beat drops like thunder. The music pulls back during the next vocal section, but trumpets, drums, and harsh screams have made their difference.

* DroppingTheBeat: A song -- in particular one that's going to do some EpicRocking -- will begin with a quiet, high, or melodic introduction without any strong beat. After a few bars, however, the beat drops and the bass kicks in, signalling the start of the main loud song. May be preceded with a shout of "one -- two -- one-two-three-four!".

* {{Tonality}} (the current page is a redirect to {{scales}}): There are two standard scales for Western music: major and minor. Major pieces sound happy, triumphant, and hopeful. Minor pieces are sad, lonely, and eerie. Musical tonality is often therefore a very good indicator of the emotional tone of a song. Modulation (changing key and/or tonality) can play into this during a DescentIntoDarknessSong. A TriumphantReprise or DarkReprise may be of the opposite tonality to the first occurrence of a song.

* TwoStepsBehind: So you've been MistakenForSpecialGuest at a party, but [[ICantDance you can't dance]]. No problem -- just fudge it, mimic everyone else, and hope you don't get caught out. However, you will end up slightly slower than everyone else, with your hands out front whilst everyone else is jumping round.\\
\\
This can apply to other situations where it's obvious that a character is trying but failing to work along with everyone else who knows what they are doing, but dancing situations are the most common and the most embarrassing.

* ActionRadii: Primarily a ComicBook trope, this is when the background of a panel or page consists of action lines radiating out from the focus of the page. This technique gives whatever is there more impact and draws the eye to it, especially if the lines are thick and use contrasting colours. Because PowerGlows, there might be a bright light (or at least the appearance of it because of the lines) in the center of the image, again bringing focus there. It can also make a character appear to be running out of the page; if so, it's a SisterTrope to SpeedStripes, since the "stripes" are coming right at you rather than moving horizontally.

* SnowChimes (or the broader GlitteringMusic): Twinkling snow, sparking ice, glittering crystals… And what better way to reflect this in music than through delicate chimes or a glockenspiel? There may be a bell for every time a snowflake gleams, or there may be just everything chiming away, the clear sounds showing how clean the snow is. Jingling bells are especially likely around Christmastime. Compare AudibleGleam, where it's just one flash of light that gets a sound

* TheRobotVoice: Rats, this can't be split from ComputerVoice. * OffBalanceOffBeat: One, two, three, four. The standard beat, probably backed by a good bit of percussion, is something easy to walk or march to and a constant feeling in the mind of the audience. Subverting it, therefore, throws everyone off balance, whether the time signature is three-four or four-four or six-eight or something else. This can be literal, when a dancer is half a step out of in-story music, probably treading on everyone's toes as a result. It can also be the soundtrack staying just out of time from the events (MickeyMousing for a villain who isn't going to conform), throwing the audience out.

* {{Luminice}}: The perfect way to illuminate an IcePalace is to use crystal clear, glowing ice. It avoids the melted patches that candles or torches leave, and means you don't have to worry about cables showing through transparent walls. The eerie touch it lends to cold halls is also perfect for whatever Snow Queen is living there. Blue is the most common colour because it is so associated with [[WaterIsBlue water]] and ice, but since having actors constantly lit like that is hard on the eyes, a rainbow of colours might be used.\\

** Music/LindseyStirling's music video for "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHjpOzsQ9YI Crystallize]]" is set in an IcePalace. She dances through the snow both in the courtyard and in its corridors, and when the camera cuts to nighttime the walls and towers are lit up with many colours.

A way to hide someone's identity, then, is to show their face talking from the nose down. On the typical landscape screen this can mean their body below the shoulders is also cropped away, meaning there is strong focus on their mouth and whatever they are saying. * TheRobotVoice: Rats, this can't be split from ComputerVoice. The version I would write about had a focus on the grating feel and the monotone, as well as how unrealistic the voice is, though, rather than the gender, though, so I like to think I came up with it separately.

** The beginning of Music/EmilieAutumn's song "Gothic Lolita" consists of a simple pattern on a single percussive instrument. The steady 3/4 beat is messed up after a few rounds, however, setting the disconcerting tone for the song.

** The wheelchair man from the ''Series/DoctorWho'' episode "[[Recap/DoctorWhoNSS2E5RiseOfTheCybermen Rise of the Cybermen]]" is introduced this way, ensuring we know he's evil right from the start. It's only a couple seconds until his whole face is shown, though.

Tel has a sandbox to play in, yay! These are ideas for tropes that I can't be bothered to put through YKTTW or don't feel I have any examples for. If you would like to steal one or edit these descriptions/add examples, feel free but do tell me.

* FluteOfMelancholy: The long notes of a flute, more than other wind instruments, are high, clear, and cold. A TearJerker in music, a single flute is often played at sad or lonely times. You can bet that the instrument itself will be made of glass or metal rather than wood, other instruments will play ''piano'' or be silenced altogether, and the key will be minor, the better to capture desperation and desolation. This is a SisterTrope to PlayingTheHeartStrings.
** The main theme of ''Film/AShortStayInSwitzerland'', a film about Dr Anne Turner's illness and suicide, is a lilting flute melody.
* SnowChimes: Twinkling snow, sparking ice, glittering crystals… And what better way to reflect this in music than through delicate chimes or a glockenspiel? There may be a bell for every time a snowflake gleams, or there may be just everything chiming away, the clear sounds showing how clean the snow is. Jingling bells are especially likely around Christmastime. Compare AudibleGleam, where it's just one flash of light that gets a sound.

* IShallWearARedHat: The elderly wear purple. Lavender. Beige. Grey. From top to toe, they're normally dressed in dull colours (even the odd floral print on a lady won't be adventurous) and old fashions. However, sometimes they step out of the mould. This might be a SplashOfColour, it might be a dress that shows some skin, or it might be a silly cap; whatever the item, the aim is fun and the consequence is embarrassed grandkids. Contrast with the ElderlyBlueHairedLady.
** The TropeNamer is the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph about how all old ladies wear purple but the writer will don a red hat that clashes.
--->''When I am an old woman I shall wear purple\\
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.''
