The attraction was very unpopular during its existence; fans of the ride's predecessor were incensed over their attraction being replaced by a LighterAndSofter experience. Teens and adults were turned off by the ride's silliness and Stitch's gross behavior, while kids still ended up being scared by the loud noises and periods of darkness. Ultimately, what was meant to be the flagship ''Lilo & Stitch'' experience at the parks ended up being "Stitch's Great Mistake!", beginning the franchise's fall to relative obscurity in the United States. Aside from [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stitch's_Supersonic_Celebration an even shorter-lived stage show in 2009,]] Disney never attempted another ''Lilo & Stitch'' attraction in the United States ever since; Disney refocused their efforts with [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stitch_Encounter Stitch Encounter]][[note]]Stitch Live! in Disneyland Paris[[/note]] over at the non-American resorts and Ride/TheEnchantedTikiRoom: Stitch Presents Aloha e Komo Mai! at Tokyo Disneyland.

Stitch's Great Escape! is a "theater-in-the-round" attraction found in the Tomorrowland area at Creator/{{Disney}}'s [[Ride/DisneyThemeParks Magic Kingdom]] in Ride/WaltDisneyWorld. The ride opened on November 16, 2004, replacing the Ride/ExtraTERRORestrialAlienEncounter, and is the first ''Franchise/LiloAndStitch''-themed attraction by the company.

Taking place before the events of the original ''WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch'' film, the ride is an interactive experience where Experiment 626 (better known as Stitch) has a [[BlatantLies "treat for your eyes, ears, and nose"]].

The premise is that the park's guests are new recruits working for the [[TheFederation United Galactic Federation's]] Prisoner Teleport Center. After being welcomed by the Grand Councilwoman and debriefed by Captain Gantu and a robotic sergeant, recruits are alerted to the impending arrival of a "Level 3" prisoner and taken to a large holding cell with seats surrounding a teleportation tube in the middle. Shortly after recruits are seated, the "Level 3" prisoner is teleported in and revealed to be an adorable looking creature called Experiment 626. Although confused at first, Gantu, his cohorts, and the recruits would soon learn why 626 is so dangerous, as the blue alien tricks his holding cell's security and begins his "[[TitleDrop great escape]]".

The ride last ran as a regularly-operating attraction on October 1, 2016 (the 45th anniversary of Walt Disney World) and began seasonal operation[[note]]meaning that the ride usually runs during peak periods when the park is more crowded, such as around major UsefulNotes/AmericanHolidays[[/note]] the following day. A full year later, on October 2, 2017, the pre-show area's first room was converted into a Stitch meet-and-greet, named "Stitch's [[MythologyGag Alien Encounter]] Character Greeting!".

The ride's most recent operating run was from December 23, 2017 to January 6, 2018, with the ride having entered a turbulent state of limbo since; just a few days later on January 9, a Disney spokesperson told Orlando's Spectrum News 13 that [[http://www.mynews13.com/content/news/cfnews13/on-the-town/article.html/content/news/articles/cfn/2018/1/9/did_disney_permanent.html "[the ride] is still seasonal and that it would reopen."]] To date, the ride's [[https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/magic-kingdom/attractions/stitchs-great-escape/ official webpage]] remains online, currently listing the attraction as "temporarily closed", although the webpage hasn't listed any new operating dates since, and the attraction's been delisted on paper guidemaps. On July 16, 2020, [[https://wdwnt.com/2020/07/breaking-stitchs-great-escape-rivers-of-light-and-primeval-whirl-officially-closed-forever-at-walt-disney-world/ it was reported]] that a staff memo was sent out stating that Stitch's Great Escape!, along with Primeval Whirl and ''Ride/RiversOfLight'' over at Disney's Animal Kingdom, have officially closed. Disney has not publicly confirmed this nor taken down its webpage, but ''[[https://attractionsmagazine.com/disney-world-permanently-closes-rivers-light-primeval-whirl-stitchs-great-escape/ Attractions Magazine]]'' has claimed that they've received confirmation of the closures from Disney themselves.

Removed Speculative Troping; the official webpage is still online. Disney has not announced anything new regarding the status of this attraction. Not only that, Audio-Animatronics do get regular maintenence once in a while, so the dismantling could possibly be for a refurbishment. Still, those leaked photos do NOT count as an official declaration of this ride's status.

It's also one of the most polarizing Disney Parks attractions of all time.

Disney World guests and fans didn't find SGE! to be so "great", however. The ride is infamous for being [[NightmareFuel somewhat scary]] and [[NauseaFuel pretty nasty]], and also for hugely pissing off the fans of its predecessor. It would quickly build up an awful reputation it would never be able to shake off, to the point that it may have played a role in its affiliated franchise's loss of American popularity. Most park guests tend to skip this ride or ride it only once, and the ride usually gets called one of the "worst" attractions at Walt Disney World (which some people don't necessarily agree with, but we'll leave that to the YMMV page).

Nobody outside of Disney ''definitively'' knows for sure what's going on in that building in Tomorrowland, but the one thing that is certain about Stitch's Great Escape! is that it has definitely left its mark in Walt Disney World history. For better or for worse.

SGE!'s most recent operating run was from December 23, 2017 to January 6, 2018, with cast members announcing after the last ride of that period that January 6 was supposedly its final day. However, the ride has been more in a state of limbo than anything since then; just a few days later on January 9, a Disney spokesperson told Orlando's Spectrum News 13 that [[http://www.mynews13.com/content/news/cfnews13/on-the-town/article.html/content/news/articles/cfn/2018/1/9/did_disney_permanent.html "[the ride] is still seasonal and that it would reopen."]] Indeed, the ride's [[https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/magic-kingdom/attractions/stitchs-great-escape/ official webpage]] remains online, currently listing the attraction as "temporarily closed", but the webpage hasn't listed any new operating dates since, and the attraction's been delisted on paper guidemaps. Not only that, but that there are rumors that the attraction is being dismanted and that the second pre-show room's Audio-Animatronics have been removed and even destroyed for parts. A photo supposedly originating from Website/{{Reddit}} shows one of the Stitch Audio-Animatronics[[note]]there were two of them, one per theater[[/note]] [[https://wdwnt.com/2018/10/photo-dismantled-animatronic-picture-leaks-from-stitchs-great-escape-at-magic-kingdom/ stripped down to its frame.]]

Mickey's Star Traders was restored on the guidemaps; I'm presuming that it's been renovated.

** Finally, in one of the gift shops connected to Stitch's Great Escape! (Merchant of Venus), pawprints can be seen going across the ceiling, leading all the way to a Stitch statue looking down from above. The gift shops (Mickey's Star Traders and [=MoV=]) also had murals with some ''Lilo & Stitch''-related imagery; MST had one on its ceiling with Stitch and Jumba's ship appearing in an alien cityscape, while [=MoV=] had [[Characters/LiloAndStitchExperiments Stitch's "cousins"]] roaming around Tomorrowland.[[note]]It should be mentioned that currently only Mickey's Star Traders has ''Lilo & Stitch''-themed merchandise, along with other Disney characters; Merchant of Venus now primarily sells ''Franchise/StarWars'' merchandise.[[/note]]

Reports are coming in that the ride has been partically dismantled, although I'm not marking it as closed just yet.

Nobody knows for sure what's going on in that building in Tomorrowland, so who knows if this controversial ride will ever operate again. But the one thing that is certain about Stitch's Great Escape! is that it has definitely left its mark in Walt Disney World history. For better or for worse.

Nobody outside of Disney ''definitively'' knows for sure what's going on in that building in Tomorrowland, so who knows if this controversial ride will ever operate again.
