Even later in season one, Scully becomes infamous for her rigid control on her emotions, her staunch independence, and her unfailing logic. By season 2's "[[Recap/TheXFilesS02E13Irresistible Irresistible]]", Mulder is trying to convince her that she doesn't have to be strong all the time and that it's okay to show weakness in front of him.
