The group moves to leave Atlanta, but when one of their own goes missing, the search takes them to the Greene family farm. Though its' owner Hershel allows the group to temporarily stay on the property, tension between the Greene family and Rick's group begin to boil over as Rick tries to convince Hershel to allow them to stay for good. As this is all going on, Daryl begins to find his place in the group, a LoveTriangle between Rick, Shane and Lori begins to go south, and the group discovers that the undead are not the only threats they have to worry about in this horrible new world.

After the events of the previous season, Rick's group is still not wholly assimilated into Alexandria. When outside threats begin to threaten the community, Rick takes command to repel the threats and soon learns that if they are to survive, not only must the Alexandrians change their ways, but he must as well if he is to actually become their leader. After heavy losses, the Atlanta group and the native Alexandrians become one during a climactic battle, and then discover other settlements of survivors nearby. The newly expanded group will have to adapt to this larger world sooner than later once they discover that a threat larger and deadlier than anything they've ever faced before is well on its way -- and may truly give them something to fear.

Weary from the aftermath of the Whisperer War which took its' toll on their faith and infrastructure, the survivors - joined by an old friend who has returned with a new group at their side - are now huddled together in one place, strained to their limits. As they struggle to pick up the pieces and rebuild whatever they can, Eugene's group continues on their journey to make contact with a larger community, unsure if they are friend or foe. As the end of a journey nears, the survivors must now make their stand to ensure that all they have sacrificed and lost, all they have struggled and fought for since the apocalypse began over a decade ago was not in vain.
