* TooDumbToLive: {{WellIntentioned|Extremist}} he may be, Bartleby's decision to use Grimm, beings drawn to negativity and compelled to destroy anything with life, as a means to calm the townspeople was a rather poor choice, especially with no huntsman capable of fighting them off. Turned UpToEleven with the knowledge that Apathy are pack Grimm, meaning the others would come for the two he took, swarming the farm with them and leading to their demise.

* RunOrDie: Once Team RWBY discovers the Apathy Grimm, this is effectively the situation they're in. They easily shrug off bullets from Crescent Rose, and they have the power to drain willpower to the point their victims loses their will to live with just their presence alone, if the team's mood sans Ruby before the discovery of the Grimm is any indication. Add in their ludicrous number in the waterway, Team RWBY and Maria have no choice but to get out of there.

* InnocentlyInsensitive: When the flatbed's tire pops right after Qrow nudges it with his foot, Maria remarks how the group are "Clearly beacons for bad luck!" Given how Qrow feels about his Bad Luck Semblance, it hits a little too close to home and sends him into a bigger sulk than before.

* EvilIsNotAToy: Bartleby tried to use a single pair of Apathy Grimm to keep the inhabitants of the farm calm so other Grimm would stay away and he could cut costs on Huntsman protection. Unfortunately, the other members of the Apathy Grimm's pack followed their missing members, and the plan [[GoneHorriblyRight was more effective than it was supposed to be]].

* GoneHorriblyRight: Bartleby tried to bring back a pair of Apathy Grimm to help keep everyone calm so he could cut costs on Huntsman protection. * MonsterOfTheAesop: The Apathy acts as a metaphor for the team’s despair. It also applies to Qrow’s alcoholism: they invited just a little bit in to take the edge off, but many more crept in and eroded their will to live until they died of apathy.
* MoreThanMindControl: The Apathy’s attack is made more effective by team RWBY’s recent hopelessness.

Wham Lines are single sentences that completely change the narrative and take it in completely new direction. Not every surprise is a Wham Line.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: Bartleby, the founder of Brunswick Farms, faced a lot of hardship when the townspeople first settled. Low on money, the town couldn't afford Huntsmen, so Bartleby decided to make the townspeople calm. Unfortunately, his method for doing so was to locate a pair of Grimm that could drain the will of those in the vicinity of them, and trap them in the cellar of his home while telling his wife that he was blocking the waterway entrance. Though he did, the rest of the pack that the Grimm came from followed the others into the waterway before he managed to do so. Their presence single-handedly wiped out the entire settlement.
* WhamLine: When Maria is asked as to why she knew about Ruby's powers as a Silver Eyed Warrior, she responds that she ''had'' Silver Eyes herself. As in, past tense. Something happened to her own Silver Eyes, hence why she has artificial ones now.

* CerebusRetcon: While it had already been undergoing this, Qrow's [[TheAlcoholic alcohism]] is ''not'' PlayedForLaughs anymore. He's so consumed with grief after learning about Ozpin that he keeps going to the bottle, effectively rendering him an invalid. Even when everyone was trying to flee the Apathy, Qrow was too busy getting shitfaced to care. While the Apathy certainly had some affect on him, he still cared so little about anything ''but'' drinking that Ruby and Weiss had to drag him out of the building just to get away.

Her having Silver Eyes isn't the Wham Line. The Past Tense is.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: A very subtle example. Everyone sans Ruby starts getting DullEyesOfUnhappiness and lowering their voices almost to the point of CreepyMonotone which not only serves as a hint that something very wrong is happening but also as a hint about the Apathy Grimm's powers.

* OutsideContextProblem: The Apathy Grimm. While other Grimm have shown more esoteric abilities such as possessing objects or a BreathWeapon, those were clearly an extension of their biology. The EmotionBomb that the Apathy can use is something closer to a species wide Semblance or even outright magic which no other Grimm seen yet have demonstrated.

* EmotionBomb: The power of the Apathy Grimm, specifically they induce apathy and drive people to despair. At a distance, they gradually erode a victim's will to live over time until eventually, as in the case of the resisdants of Brunswick Farms, the victims simply lie down and wait to die. In close proximity, they can let out a wail that can outright paralyze victims, as they do to Team RWBY and Maria.

* NighInvulnerable: The Apathy Grimm are lean and sinewy, but can take a lot of punishment. Bullets fired from Crescent Rose do nothing, and being lit on fire merely slows them down. It took a sample of Ruby's power to merely ''stun'' them, and a full display to bury them for good.

She then tells Ruby to focus on her loved ones, and wanting to protect them. Ruby then lets out a blast of light from her eyes that wipes out the entire pack of Grimm.
