Rarity and Twilight Sparkle are a lot more receptive toward Dragons, and if Princess Ember is any indication, relations between Dragons and Ponies have improved, albeit just a little. Garble on the other hand still hates Ponies, perhaps even more so than before, and hates Spike just as much for associating with them.

As Spike and Rarity are mining for gemstones in a cavern, Spike suddenly begins to glow bright, with his scales itching. Rarity takes him to Twilight's castle, where Celestia and Luna remark that they've seen this before. It's said to be the call of the Dragon Lord, a summon for every dragon to go to the Dragonlands. Spike, remembering his last encounter with other dragons, feels nervous about going, so Rarity and Twilight agree to go with him in disguise. Once at the Dragonlands, the huge Dragon Lord, Scorch, says that he must soon abdicate the throne by dragon customs. To choose a new Dragon Lord, the dragons will all compete in a race to retrieve a bloodstone scepter from the dreaded Flamecano, a perilous mountain filled with dangers, and whomever brings the scepter back to Scorch will be crowned the new Dragon Lord. While listening, Spike's old dragon nemesis Garble taunts Spike about how small Spike is, while also proclaiming that he'll destroy Equestria with an army of dragons once he wins. Scorch also forbids his daughter, Princess Ember, from competing in the competition, since she's not big or strong enough to be Dragon Lord. While Spike initially wants nothing to do with the competition, and even gets Scorch's permission to leave, he can't shake the thought of a dragon doing harm to his friends, so he turns back and agrees to go after the scepter.

Over a set of challenges including massive boulders raining from the cliffs, flames shooting from caverns and a maze of crystals, Spike and Ember continue to progress further, Garble following close behind. At a room full of lava pits, Spike saves Rarity from otherwise being burned by a lava jet, with Ember incredulous that Spike risked himself for someone else, especially a pony. She still insists on looking out for herself, flying away in a maze of caverns. Spike insists that he and Ember friends to Rarity and Twilight as they progress through the caerns, finally coming across where the bloodstone scepter had fallen. Garble arrives shortly behind them, exposing Rarity and Twilight by removing their disguises. Just when it looks like Garble is going to attack all of them, Ember flies in and holds Garble off while Spike grabs the bloodstone scepter, becoming the new Dragon Lord. Spike calls off Garble and tells the other dragons to leave the Flamecano, then passes the bloodstone scepter to Ember instead. Spike knows that he'd be a bad Dragon Lord, and having to stay in the Dragonlands doesn't appeal to him, so he passes the responsibility to Ember. She takes the bloodstone scepter back to her father, who announces her as the new Dragon Lord. Spike, Rarity and Twilight leave, with Twilight happy that she learned about dragon culture, and Rarity brimming with ideas for a line of camouflage.

The dragons all fly over the sea to the Flamecano, except for Spike, who doesn't have wings, so he elects to swim across, Rarity and Twilight disguising themselves to cheer
Spike on as they follow. As they fly, the dragons are assaulted from below by sea creatures, one of which knocks a dragon wearing armor out of the air. As the dragon hits the water, he rapidly sinks, so Spike dives into the water to rescue him from drowning, pulling him to shore. Once on shore, the dragon reveals himself to be Princess Ember, who is forced competing against her father's wishes. She also coldly tells Spike that dragons don't do friendships after exposing Twilight and Rarity, and that it's every dragon for themselves. Garble soon arrives after, taunting Spike again about having pony friends. While Ember doesn't reveal the ponies to compete Garble, Spike also covers for Ember, lying about her identity. The two agree to work together to get deeper into the volcano, but Ember still insists they're not friends.
