The story opens with Rodger proposing to Jane in Bed. Don and Pete have flown to California to look for aerospace business. Don looses interest in work, and pursues a girl named Joy, who is involved in a group of libertines who practice very free sex. Rodger needs money because Mona is demanding a large settle before she lets him marry Jane. The only source of money available is to sell a controlling interest in Sterling Cooper to a foreign company. Rodger persuades Cooper to go along with this. Peggy is interested in an office mate, but he is openly gay.
