Overlong plot summary replaced with concise version, as per mod decision.

Two men from Fargo arrive at the Hess & Sons Transport to meet with Max Gold about Sam Hess’ death. Gold tells the two about how Malvo had come in the day before to have a look at Sam, and they confirm that their intention is to kill whoever is responsible.

Lester sits at his brother’s house looking at the wound on his hand and thinking back to the incident when Chazz offers for him to stay there a couple of days, at least while the crime scene is being cleaned up. Lester goes back to the house to have a look at the damage, while Molly visits Thurman’s fresh tombstone. Ida finds Molly cleaning some dishes at her house during Vern’s visitation, and Bill Oswalt, the new police chief, expresses his belief that the crime scene at the Nygaard house was the work of a drifter. He consents that they can visit Lester so long as he’s the one who does the talking.

Lester, meanwhile, is mourning the loss of Pearl around the house when there’s a knock at the door. He allows Bill and Molly in and very calmly recounts a false series of events in which Pearl was already dead when he got home. When Molly mentions how Thurman had arrived the other night to ask about Sam Hess, however, his cool exterior starts to deteriorate. Bill doesn’t seem to notice, and tells Molly he’s satisfied with their interview before heading towards the door.

-->'''Lester:''' She was a good woman, ya know? Good wife. I just keep asking myself… who coulda done a thing like this?

Somewhere else, Malvo picks up a package containing a book by the "supermarket king of Minnesota" Stavros Milos and a new ID complete with a job as a minister. He meets with Milos, who wants him to track down the person who’s been sending him blackmail letters, and suggests starting with his soon-to-be ex-wife.

Meanwhile in Duluth, Police Chief Ben Schmidt assigns his officers with gathering any information relating to the Nygaard murder case. Gus, keeping the incident with Malvo to himself, is tasked with filling on for the animal control guy. That evening, he returns to his daughter with dinner, and she tells him about the anti-bullying assembly they had during school that day. When she asks what he would do in a complicated situation, he tries telling her that as both a police officer and a dad, he has two jobs, and therefore there can be more than one right thing to do.

At the bar where Hess was killed, Wrench and Numbers are trying to get a lead on who the murderer could be. The two people they interview point fingers at a regular customer named Lenny, who they abduct and bring to Max Gold, but Gold expresses doubt that they’ve nabbed the right man.

Malvo meets with Milos’ wife, who’s in the middle of a session with her fitness instructor. She tells him that Milos has been lying about where his wealth comes from before her son comes in and interrupts the interview. At his hotel, Malvo listens to a tape he recorded of his conversation with Lester and looks over the ransom note. He discovers a suntan lotion smeared on the side, which he also found on his hand after shaking hands with the fitness instructor, indicating him as the blackmailer.

At the police station, Bill asks Molly to check around any neighboring towns to see if there are any recent drifter problems and tells her not to pursue any further investigation into Lester. Lester, meanwhile, is checking the washing machine at his house, where he’s hidden the murder weapon in the back. Kitty welcomes him into her and Chazz’s house, and Lester sets up residence in their son Gordo’s room.

On a trip to the pharmacy, Lester tries picking up some anti-bacterium to keep his wound from getting infected. Molly, however, runs into him and tries asking some questions, leading him to leave while the man in the back calls for him to pick up his drugs. She follows him to his car while he tries desperately to ignore her and drives off.

The next day, Molly fills Lou in about her investigation over at his diner. They have a father-daughter chat about the varying degrees of crime and what’s good in the world, but soon enough Bill comes in and calls her out for “harassing” Lester the previous night. He informs her that she’s being taken off the case, and makes an angry exit.

At a frozen lake somewhere, Wrench and Numbers drill a hole and dump Lenny inside head first.
