Hasbro changed direction and beginning with G1.5 (''My Little Pony Tales'' onwards), the series has been revamped to not be powered by Nightmare Fuel. Due to PanderingToTheBase, it's back to stay with G4 Season 2, possibly permanently if the WordOfGod entry in [=WMG=] is true.
** This troper has heard several people complain about how horrific the G1 series are to their kids, who are used to the cute G3 series where all they do is sing and run around. Even to adults the series can be full of NightmareFuel; every episode someone's trying to harm the ponies. Being a product of the DarkerAndEdgier driven Eighties, you should expect several moments that make you want to pee your pants.
* The pilot is especially bad, being the darkest episode in the series so far. Two minutes in and we get a major MoodWhiplash when giant dragons straight out of ''DungeonsAndDragons'' come in and kidnap the ponies to become slaves. Only two minutes later a girl almost gets kidnapped, then almost gets murdered when a dragon accidentally lets go of her; though a Mook comes in and saves her. Not too long later a CuteShotaroBoy baby dragon gets threatened to be [[OffWithHisHead decapitated]]; he also locks up the cute little filly and makes her watch as her friends are turned into dragons. There's also the ArtifactOfDoom that is darkness incarnate, which transforms the ponies into giant psycho dragons. The BigBad is a giant demon Centaur who reaches CompleteMonster status. He [[spoiler:is killed by the heroes, using a Rainbow. He '''exploded''']] This is all in a 20 minute episode..The only thing that stops this special from being pure HighOctaneNightmareFuel are the songs.
