* FanFic/{{Debt}} spends twelve and a half chapters as a rather nasty mixture of nightmarish imagery, NauseaFuel, and TearJerker. About halfway through the last chapter, [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments it becomes kind of hard for the reader to believe that they're still reading a]] DarkFic.

* ''FanFic/YinAndYangSeries'': Since chapters in "Paradise is Where The Heart Is" focus on different characters and plots, tone can also vary from chapter to chapter.

* Chapter 17 of the Pokemon fanfic ''FanFic/TravelsOfTheTrifecta'' alternates between more comical scenes of Barry and Conway's interactions and Paul's angst-filled training for the upcoming battle against Ash.
* ''Fanfic/AGemInTheRough'': "The Dream Island" starts out with the Straw Hats asking Garnet questions, Luffy talking with Pearl, and Steven entering Luffy's dreams where he ends up on an island of meat with younger dream versions of Luffy, Ace, and [[spoiler:Sabo]]. Everything seems like it is going to be an innocent, fun time exploring Steven's dreams powers...until Steven finds a door hidden in some rocks. Nonetheless, funny or wacky situations keep popping up when you don't expect them, thereby sometimes feeling out of place while trying to lighten up the story.

Because the story jumps around various POV characters on both sides of the Hoshidan/Nohr conflict, usually between characters in completely different parts of the map, it is not uncommon to be in the middle of a graphic death scene and switch over to a little dose of light hearted comedic banter.
