While Shepard is gone, the Collectors invade and the player is put in control of NonActionGuy Joker, the ship's pilot. With the assistance of EDI, Joker sneaks past Praetorians and Scions to release EDI's RestrainingBolt, allowing her to reboot the Normandy[='s=] defenses and eject the remaining Collectors out the airlocks. * GangOfHats: The three major mercenary bands in the Terminus System each have an associated colour and patterns to the races they recruit and the units they deploy. Eclipse is yellow, recruits asari, humans and salarians and deploys a mix of regular troops and biotic and tech specialists, backed up by a wide range of MechaMooks. The Blood Pack are red and recruits mainly krogan with shotguns, using vorcha and varren as attack dogs and ammo bait. The Blue Suns are blue, recruit batarians, humans and turians and only deploys basic soldiers with a mix of assault rifles, shotguns and heavy weapons. They also specialise in different practices besides merc work. Eclipse specialise in smuggling eezo and drugs, the Blood Pack specialise in raw brute force and the Blue Suns have their fingers in a wide range of legal and illegal businesses that make them a borderline crime syndicate.

* IntoxicationMechanic: Shepard can get drunk by ordering too many drinks at one of several bars in the game, making the graphics blurry and distorted, although this doesn't have any meaningful effect on gameplay, since Shepard cannot get drunk during combat missions. Nevertheless, a sidequest on Omega requires Shepard to first get drunk to order ryncol, while an unmarked story event on Ilium has the Matriarch Aethyta's appearance change drastically when Shepard is drunk, as opposed to sober -- no explanation is ever given for this, however. Later, Shepard can share a drink with Dr. Karin Chakwas in the medbay, during which you get to learn more about her character. While this does not impact gameplay, the player's entire screen will be fuzzy while it tilts and sways for about 10 seconds after.

The game hand waves this by having the Council either acting as if Shepard doesn't exist (if the original Council died, whether they were replaced by humans or aliens) or giving them baack their Spectre status but ordering them to stick to the Terminus systems or else (if the original Council survived), so any warning would've fallen on deaf ears.

Yet, the Arrival DLC shows the arriving on the edges of the Milky Way only a few months after the end of ME 2. This means that simply flying to the nearest mass relay was always an option for the and they were never trapped, to begin with.
** Sovereign (retroactively): The mere existence of the never before mentioned Collectors in ME 2 makes Sovereign in ME 1 kind of an idiot. After the , it goes on a mission to gather allies and open the mass relay manually. Yet for some mysterious reason, Sovereign never enlists the help of the Collectors. Although their overall strength is never fully specified, it seems to be substantial. Adding them to its army could easily have tipped the balance in the final fight giving the victory to the Reapers.
