* GogglesDoNothing: Bossun's goggles help him concentrate, though how much of it is all in his head (no pun intended) remains to be seen. He also uses them to focus on a target when he uses his slingshot and pachinko's balls.

* CensorSteam: Used to avoid [[DoesThisRemindsYouOfAnything more]] {{fanservice}} scenes during the School Trip Rhapsody arc. And it actually gets lampshaded by the narration!

** The anime takes it UpToEleven, ever since they start using the second opening (set on a beach so all the female characters are wearing either bikini's or swimming costumes... [[FanDisservice including]] [[BilingualBonus Yabasawa]]). The third ending features the girls in their underwear, bubbling and Himeko is even stripping off her nightgown. But it gets featured much more in the second season, featuring [[AscendedExtra poor Kura-chan]] and taking advantage of Saaya, as well. And there was official merchandise that used this as well. There were "oppai mousepads" featuring not only Mimorin ''but'' Himeko, too!

* AdaptationExpansion: Creator/TatsunokoProductions added fanservice not included in the manga (as mentioned below), [[EarlyBirdCameo introduced some characters earlier]] than its original source, it {{ascended extra}}s and added characters that, sometimes, little to nothing were needed to be in some episodes (blaming the {{fanservice}} in some cases), and they expanded some single chapter plots as half hour episodes. Since the manga series continued some time more after the anime ended[[note]]The anime series ended in September 2012 with an OVA released in February 2013, the manga ended in July 2013[[/note]], it was forced to have a GeckoEnding, without too much resolution to some character plots just like [[spoiler:adapting the rest of Switch's past and if he was actually going to move on to speak again]].

* {{Catchphrase}}: Tsubaki could give Mr. T or [[Manga/SoulEater Excalibur]] a run for their money saying "FOOL!" in almost every chapter he appears. Apparently [[Creator/HiroShimono he]] got annoyed at being called one [[LightNovel/BakaToTestToShoukanjuu all the time]].

** Usami Hani, implying her double personality problem ("Hani" is how ''Honey'' is pronounced in Japanese (like, say, ''Manga/CuteyHoney''), "Usa" comes from ''bunny'', mostly referring to the MsFanservice ones).

* AccidentalTruth: An inversion occurs in chapter 185, when Quecchon was looking for a missing item, but refuses to tell the Sket Dan what it exactly is. She does give some vague descriptions of the item, which Bossun tried to dechiper using his Facial Composite skills. He came up with a weird butterfly/bat/alien object that ''somehow'' really exist in the show's universe, but when he tried to give it to Quecchon, she recoiled in disgust.

** Used whenever Roman Saotome activates her "Otome Vision", mentally filtering the world to align with shojo manga (LoveBubbles and BishieSparkle abound). Or when her art gets featured in the series.

* AuthorAvatar:
** Enta Hinohara is Shinohara's manga counterpart. An author that went to Kaimei to look inspiration for his new manga series.

** There is also Kiri's backstory, which details about his attitude and his lack of trust towards people.

* BareFistedMonk: Tsubaki of the Student Council prefers a hands-on approach to most problems. He isn't often pushed to use force, but practices amateur boxing, karate and judo for just such an occasion.

* {{Bishonen}}: The reason Switch is so popular with the ladies despite being a somewhat unpleasant otaku who speaks with a computer. Also Shinba Michiru, Daimon Akitoshi (when he takes his mask off), Kiri Katou, and thanks to one of Chuuma's experiments, [[spoiler: Bossun ends up as one. The chapter focuses on the fact that the Academy needs a group of reliable and ''pretty'' people to promote it. The people in this group: Bossun, Switch, Daimon, Katou, and Tsubaki who is added because he is the ''little brother'' of Bossun..]]

** The student council president, Agata Soujiro, is portrayed as this.

* CerebusRollercoaster: The series fully consists on this when the situation calls it in some arcs. There are chapters and arcs that are tearjerking at their worst, and heartwarming at their best, followed or preceded mostly by its usual slice of life comedy chapters or episodes. "Switch Off" is the first breakpoint in the serial where it presents events that would (or already have been) affect the characters and their surroundings, until it is later pointed again for its consequences.

** In a dramatical turn, Sawa and Kazuyoshi. [[spoiler:Kazuyoshi had feelings for Sawa, and Sawa did as well since they grew up together as ChildhoodFriends. They both loved each other... without the other one knowing, and sadly, this gets downplayed in the "Switch Off" arc. Heck, the jealousy Kazuyoshi felt for Masafumi over Sawa (whom he felt she looked at their relationship such as LikeBrotherAndSister) mostly was what detonated the plot of it.]]

** In chapter 208, Tsubaki, absolutely [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial not influenced by the Sket-Dan]], tried to create a matching T-shirt for the Student Council.

* CreatorCameo: During the first Popularity Poll chapter, Shinohara realizes that things are getting out of control when he is mentioned to be voted as the 17th place "character" in the already BreakingTheFourthWall chapter. Roman even claims she is hearing a "voice from the heavens".

** "Last Dance" [[spoiler: is not only the name of the final arc of the series, but also the last job of the Sket Dan as well, before retiring and graduating.]]

* TheFaceless: Himeko has a friend who is named Nakatani-san, but even though some of the characters know her (and it proves that she exists), Bossun doesn't know who is she or how she looks like, and goes a whole chapter looking for her to finally meet her. However, it remains as a mystery.

* FirstNameBasis: Himeko considers it is a big step [[spoiler:for Bossun and Tsubaki to refer to each other as Yusuke and Sasuke, respectively, but they strangely have never addressed each other as such, even a year after they found out they were siblings. They eventually do, with Bossun's initiative to do so, in "Inherit The Twin Stars"]].

** [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki met a few years ago in their birthday. Due to Tsubaki looking different back then, and Tsubaki also [[BlindWithoutEm using his glasses]], they shouldn't have recognized each other]].
** Bossun does not remember that he bumped into Switch once... [[spoiler:before he turned into a hikikomori]].

* FreakyFridayFlip: The School Trip Rhapsody arc has Bossun and Himeko do this.

* {{Hikikomori}}: While Switch used to be one (due to the unfortunate circumstances), the Sket Dan has to deal with another one, Fumi's classmate and friend Morino during the [[ChristmasEpisode "Christmas Card"]] mini arc.
* HugeSchoolgirl: Koma-chan, where her shyness is a rather often problem that just does not mix well with her already being too tall.

** Tsubaki wanted to cut his hair as a meaning of [[ExpositoryHairstyleChange wanting to be stronger and manlier]]. [[spoiler: During his first encounter with Bossun, he was inspired by his courage to be able to stand and face others.]]
** Himeko zigzags it because it's also a ExpositoryHairstyleChange. She had a shorter black natural colored haircut when she was a kid, but later she grew it up and dyied it to be blonde to go with the delinquent image she already was going with in middle school. After the Sket Dan was officially formed, she cut it out (but decides to keep herself as a blonde) to start fresh and forget her "Onihime" past.

** As we find out from the flashbacks, the pre-Sket-Dan days were miserable for [[spoiler: Himeko and Switch]].
** Kiri thinks it is like this towards Tsubaki [[spoiler:after the events of "Solitude"]], who doesn't quite enjoy it and finds it incredibly irritating.

* LikeBrotherAndSister: Bossun and Himeko usually see their relationship this way. However, they act much more similar to an [[LikeAnOldMarriedCouple old married couple]].
* LongLostRelative: As it turns out, [[spoiler:Bossun has a twin brother, Sasuke Tsubaki]]
* LoveDodecahedron: Regarding Saaya's feelings... at least in her brother [[DitzyGenius Soujirou]]'s mind.

* MisplacedKindergartenTeacher: Part way through the series, the Sket Dan gets Remi Misora, a former host of a children TV show (similar in the veins of ''Series/SesameStreet'' as as their assistant homeroom teacher.

* NiceHat: Bossun's Poppman red hat, Roman's ShoutOut to Creator/OsamuTezuka, Silk's & Smile's.

* TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: Parodied with the Kaimei Academy Disciplinary Commitee (referring even to [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion SEELE, for lord's sake...]]). The academy's principal is [[BlatantLies not part]] [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial of this council]], and it's also implied that Prof. Yamanobe belongs in it as well, as many other teachers from the high school.

* SeparatedAtBirth: [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki.]]

** There's some teasing for Tsubaki and Daisy, in one episode when he goes to save her from being blackmailed.
** Kiri and Usami shared some moments [[spoiler:especially since they had to communicate with each other if they were going to stay in the Student Council]].

** In episode 28 of the anime, there are some scenes with Soujiro and Michiru that are invoking this, but they aren't present [[AdaptationDistillation at all]] in the manga, besides the fact that Michiru do worry about his friend, ''a lot''.

** Chuuma's daughter wants him and Remi to be together. [[spoiler:And she succeeds in making them into a couple. Chapters later, they get married.]]

* TomatoSurprise: Who would have ever thought that [[spoiler: "An-chan" was Kazuyoshi Usui all along, who was narrating "Switch Off"? Or that the guy who stars "One Guy's Quiet Day Off" was actually, Ryosuke, Bossun and Tsubaki's dad? TheReveal was well too played in both sides of the manga and the anime, since Masafumi and Kazuyoshi are brothers who share similar characteristics, and Bossun is actually a GenerationXerox of his dad in his youth. The anime disguised this as well, especially regarding their voice actors. Neither Kazuyoshi nor Masafumi are fully credited in the first part of the arc, and Creator/HiroyukiYoshino HAD to act for Ryosuke and Bossun, as well)]].

** Shinba approaches this to put an end to the LoveDodecahedron around Saaya in Agata's mind to let him concentrate for the second shance of the Tokyo U entrance exams. However, [[spoiler:Tsubaki doesn't know he is part of this plan.]]

** Shinohara appears on the First Popularity Poll chapter, in which he was voted as one of the popular ''no-characters'' of the series.

* BeachEpisode: Chapter 266 is [[{{Fanservice}} appropiately]] named ''Beach Girls Collection'' in which things got [[TemptingFate worse]] when Bossun drinks Chuuma's Invisibility Potion Mark II and the Gesu club gets involved in it as well.

** There will be times that either Bossun, Himeko and/or Switch will do this. But the one that takes the honor in its plenty glory, is Saotome Roman, even when she does not appear on scene, remarking on how long we, the readers/viewers, haven't seen a certain character in the series. Heck, there were the chapters of the 2 popularity polls where the Fourth Wall didn't survived at all (and even the author was dragged into it as well!).
** Special mentions go to both crossover chapters of ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'' and ''Sket Dance''. More notoriously in the ''Sket Dance'''s crossover manga chapter, where Bossun breaks into an AuthorAvatar moment for Shinohara himself being grateful to Hideaki Sorachi in Gintoki's place. (This was left out from the anime, though.)

* CantHoldHisLiquor: Shinba Michiru can get drunk just by smelling cooking sake.

** Himeko. They don't call her ''Onihime'' for nothing (that roughly translates to Ogre Princess, "Ogress" or Demon Princess).

* CallBack: The puppet show in episode 6 (chapters 10-12) has parallels to Himeko (the original Onihime) meeting her imposter in episode 3 (chapters 5 & 6).

However, [[spoiler:they start realizing that next year when Bossun and the others got graduated, there wouldn't be another Sket Dan, so they dissolve their group and formally become part of the Sket Dan.]]

* LongLostRelative: [[spoiler:As it turns out, Bossun has a twin brother, Sasuke Tsubaki]]

** It's actually more of a LoveTriangle for Saaya, since she has confessed already her feelings [[spoiler:to Bossun (and it was hinted to Himeko when she was in Bossun's body during the School Trip Rhapsody arc when she told him (her) about it), but he's still somewhat unaware of what Himeko truly feels for him]].

* MediumAwareness: Roman can tear through pages to travel through space and time, wield speech bubbles and tone as weapons, and manipulate narration boxes. It [[UpToEleven takes up to eleven]] in the Back Then chapter when she is clearly manipulating her 1st-year-student flashback with everything the page appears with. The {{narrator}} gave up in the end.

* MisplacedKindergartenTeacher: Part of the way through the manga, the Sket Dan gets Remi Misora as their assistant homeroom teacher. She used to be the host of a pre-schooler show, like ''Series/SesameStreet'' or ''[[Series/BarneyAndFriends Barney]]'' apparently.
* MoodWhiplash: Along with ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'', the series run with it in Magazine/ShonenJump by mix-and-matching comedy and drama. The series is usually comedy-themed, and could suddenly be stroke with a dramatic arc that could affect permanently the series, in contrast to some of slapstick that invokes the StatusQuoIsGod.

* NonActionGuy: Switch, who is always at the sidelines.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Agata Soujirou. The [[spoiler:former]] Student Council President. He's really a MagnificentBastard when he proposes it into, however... he is a bit of a DitzyGenius, and quite a case of BrilliantButLazy.

* TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: Parodied with the Kaimei Academy Disciplinary Commitee (to [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion SEELE, for lord's sake...]]). The academy's director is [[BlatantLies not part]] [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial of this council, of course]], and it's also implied that Prof. Yamanobe belongs in it as well, as many other teachers from the academy.

* OverlyNarrowSuperlative: Himeko calls Bossun "the number one in Japan when it comes in finding a way of breaking out of a warehouse with long arms" during the first part of "Costume Break".
* PaperThinDisguise: The [[FunnyAfro notorious afro costume]]. And of course: Deer Man and the Sket Squad Kyeunja. Cue BigDamnHeroes moment.
* ThePilot: As many other series of the ''Weekly Shonen Jump'', ''Sket Dance'' counts with two one-shots: one that was published in ''Akamaru Jump'' in 2006, and another one in the WSJ. The first one, is still something darker than the series was going to be. The one published in the WSJ before the serialization is more closer to what the series was going to be later.
* PottyEmergency: A full chapter dedicated to Bossun with a touch of ToiletHumour... really, poor Bossun... And in the School Trip Rhapsody arc this also happens again, to Bossun... [[FreakyFridayFlip while in Himeko's body]] and Himeko in Bossun's body as well.

** ''Yuu''ki ''Rei''ko. The kanji is different, but Yuurei means ghost in Japanese. In fact, using differnt kanji, you can interpret "Yuuki Reiko" as something like "Dark willed, spirit child." Perfect for our resident occult-freak.

** [[spoiler:Kazuyoshi to his little brother, Masafumi. Or so, it was implied to be his original intention after Masafumi died. A year before the actual start of the series, he copied his image, and took his original nickname "Switch". Kazuyoshi used to be laid back and fairly normal, until he was guilt tripped due to the circumstances that led to his little brother's death. He knew that he would never replace him but he only wanted to preserve Masafumi's image just for a little longer more]]. The whole story is a massive tearjerker, giving the public a good idea of why he is such a weird guy.
** In the pre-serialization pilot chapter, it was Deconstructed and Invoked. [[spoiler:Ichiro's girlfriend Nanako died in an accident. Her twin sister, Namiko invoked this trope in order to help him cope.]]
* SadistTeacher: Kutsuwa Daijirou. Especially when he was tranferred to Kaimei, imposing rules to anyone, and mostly threatening Himeko because she was formerly known as a delinquent. [[spoiler: He was a teacher from the middle school where Kiri was one of its students. He was the main reason on why Kiri didn't trust in anyone, as a result of bullying some of the students, such as Kiri's friend, Kihara. Of course, he was pretty shocked when Kutsuwa was transferred in Kaimei. And then ''he'' threatened him with his life as revenge.]]

* TheSevenMysteries: As any Japanese school, the academy has its own "The Seven Mysteries of Kaimei"... it was a relevant topic in one of the novels, and it was referred again in the Fanbook.

** In episode 28 of the anime, there are some scenes with Agata and Michiru that contain this. There weren't such scenes in the manga because of the AdaptationDistillation the anime suffered.
** There's plenty ShipTease towards Bossun and Himeko through all of the series. It doesn't help that both of them are pretty ObliviousToLove in some ways or another, since Bossun helped her in the first place (and then he gave to her her necklace, he once repleid she would be such a great wife, the incident of Samurai and Purin, to mention some examples). Same goes with Saaya and Bossun, which lead to her confession some chapters after.
** This is also played in some ways with Tsubaki and Daisy in one chapter/episode where he wants to help/save her from being blackmailed.
* ShoutOut: Has its own [[ShoutOut/SketDance page]].

** Chuuma-sensei's daughter ships him and Misora Remi. [[spoiler:And she succeeds in making them into a couple. Chapter later, they get married.]]

* ShrinkingViolet: [[KnightTemplar Tsubaki]] of all people is revealed to be this in the past.
** Also, HugeSchoolgirl Koma-chan. Combined with CharlesAtlasSuperpower, making her embarrassed is a terrible idea.
* SlidingScaleOfFourthWallHardness: Most of the time it stays at LampshadeHanging, with occasional slipping into MediumAwareness. Then [[NoFourthWall Roman]] shows up and completely shatter the fourth wall to pieces.

* TheSpeechless: Smile from the Pocket Dan is mute. Tact and Silk have to interpret what he is trying to say to other people.
* SplitPersonality: Usami Hani, is a quiet girl who [[DoesNotLikeMen does not like boys]]. When she touches one, she turns into her alter-ego, Bunny, who flirts with every boy she sees. She will revert back to Usami when touched by a girl.

* StylisticSuck: Used pretty frequently, most often with Roman or Himeko.
** Also used with Sainon and Magarfunkle of the Shonen Manga Club and their completely incoherent story, "Space Cosmos Universe" from the manga battle chapter. Much to Himeko's disdain.
** Any time where we got to see any character's manga, or any ShowWithinAShow, it's almost certain this trope is in effect.

** In episode 4 whenever Roman does an ArtShift into Manga style panels her dialogue appears in speech bubbles, even though it can still be heard.

* TheThingThatGoesDoink
* TomatoSurprise: And it works so well in the manga and the anime. [[spoiler:The last chapter of "Switch Off", when we realize that "An-chan" is Usui Kazuyoshi, the current Switch (it was indeed also well disguised in the credits of the anime adaptation) "One Guy's Quiet Day Off" makes it seem that the guy is a hatless Bossun up until TheReveal (blame the GenerationXerox that exists with Bossun and his dad... to an extent where Creator/HiroyukiYoshino, did BOTH voices).]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Roman and Yuuki turn from a DamselInDistress and a ghost, respectively, into highly trained ninjas less than a page in the ninja AlternateUniverse.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Himeko loves Pelolipop Candy, and it has weird flavors such as: Sea Cucumber, Soft-Roe and Liver. Anyone else who eats them usually vomits.

** In chapter 217, [[spoiler:Bossun exploits this to trick the Student Council]], and unexpectedly, they fell for it. Obviously, afterwards, [[spoiler:Tsubaki finds out and it's not amused of it.]]
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: Not so much with the Sket Trio as it is with [[spoiler: Ryosuke, Haru, and Akane]].

* UnresolvedSexualTension: Bossun and Himeko, in spades, especially after the "Ogress" arc, with quite a few ShipTease moments sprinkled every few chapters or so. In-universe nods to these make the pairing canon.
** A few guest characters will comment on their complicated relationship from time to time, most notably by Jin and Saaya, who have crushes on Himeko and Bossun, respectively.

* WeaponOfChoice: Himeko is basically a [[{{Delinquents}} street brawler]] (although a retired and reformed one), so she uses a field hockey stick as a weapon. Bossun and Switch are non-combative types, but Bossun, as a bratty type, can be very skillful with a slingshot if necessary.

** "Ogress", where it reveals the backstory of Himeko.

* TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: Parodied with the Kaimei Academy Disciplinary Commitee (to [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion SEELE, for lord's sake...). The academy's director is [[BlatantLies not part]] [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial of this council, of course]], and it's also implied that Prof. Yamanobe belongs in it as well, as many other teachers from the academy.

* {{Calvinball}}: Any time geography teacher Yamanobe Kunio shows up, he's bound to have some utterly nonsensical game in tow.

* DecoyProtagonist: The first episode is about [[NewTransferStudent Teppei]] first days at Kaimei Academy.

** Switch in his BackStory, for his own reasons. Tsubaki also makes such a decision when appearing as a minor character in Bossun's backstory ([[spoiler:his hair, though, was a bit more longer during his First Year in Kaimei; and then in the ''Back Then'' chapter, he appears with a shorter haircut, ressembling his present self]]).
** Himeko is an inversion and a straight example of this. Her hair was shorter when younger and was definitely not blonde, but later she grew it up to go as the image of the yanki she became. Later, after the events of "Switch On", Himeko cuts it, just to start fresh when [[spoiler:the Sket Dan officially formed]].

* InelegantBlubbering: Bossun does this after the softball captain tells her story in episode 4.
** ManlyTears: Meanwhile, Switch gets something like this.
** It seems that when the Seniors graduated in February 2010, [[spoiler:Michiru ended like this when expressing his 'greetings' to the Sket Dan. Bossun didn't even understand his words in between the tears.]]
* InstantAwesomeJustAddNinja: [[spoiler:The new student council member]] Kiri Katou.
* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: In chapter 232 [[spoiler: Himeko almost confessed her feelings to Bossun, but Switch interrupted. Cue 55 chapters later and Bossun does this towards her second try.]]

** ''Yuu''ki ''Rei''ko. The kanji is different, but Yuurei means ghost in Japanese. In fact, using differnt kanji, you can interpret Yuuki Reiko as something like "Dark willed, spirit child." Perfect for our resident occult-freak.
** Usami Hani, implying her double personality problem ("Hani" is how ''Honey'' is pronounced in Japanese (like, say, ''Manga/CuteyHoney''), Usa comes from ''bunny'', mostly referring to the MsFanservice ones).

* SadistTeacher: Kutsuwa Daijirou. Especially when he was tranferred to Kaimei, imposing rules to anyone, and mostly threatening Himeko because she was known as a delinquent. [[spoiler: He was a teacher from the middle school where Kiri was going. He was the main reason on why Kiri didn't trust in anyone, as a result of bullying some of the students, even Kiri's friend Kihara. Of course, he wasn't that amused when Kutsuwa was transferred in Kaimei. And then ''he'' threatened him with his life as revenge.]]

* SenseiChan: Misora Remi and Yamanobe Kunio (being himself a male example).

* AdaptationExpansion: Creator/TatsunokoProductions added fanservice not included in the manga (as mentioned below), [[EarlyBirdCameo introduced some characters earlier]] than its original source, it {{ascended extra}}s and added characters that, sometimes, little to nothing were needed to be in some episodes (blaming the {{fanservice}} in some cases), and they expanded some single chapter plots as half hour episodes. Since the manga series continued some time more after the anime ended[[note]]The anime series ended in September 2012 with an OVA released in February 2013, the manga ended in July 2013[[/note]], it was forced to have a GeckoEnding, without too much resolution to some character plots [[spoiler:like adapting the rest of Switch's past and if he was going to speak again]].

* CerebusRollercoaster: The series fully consist on this when the situation calls it in some arcs. There are chapters and arcs that are tearjerking at their worst, and heartwarming at their best, followed or predated mostly by the usual slice of life comedy chapters or episodes the series lives on. "Switch Off" is the first breakpoint in the serial where it is presents events that would (or already have been) affect the characters and their surroundings, until it is later pointed again for its consequences.

* TheAce: Bossun, when he's not being the ButtMonkey. His power of concentration basically makes him an extremely quick learner, not to mention his own talents with art. So far he has mastered origami, figurine making, and magic shows. Unfortunately, he's often a bit too absorbed in his activities.

* AdaptationExpansion: Without mentioning that Creator/TatsunokoProductions added fanservice not included in the manga (as mentioned below), there were also the introduction of characters a little bit more earlier than its original source, it {{ascended extra}}s and added characters that, sometimes, little to nothing needed to be in some episodes (blaming the {{fanservice}} in some cases), and they expanded some single chapter plots as half hour episodes. * AuthorAvatar: Hinohara Enta. Bossun himself at the end of the Gintama Crossover chapter.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Despite being [[TheRival sworn rivals who just want to outdo each other at everything]], Bossun and Tsubaki [[RivalsTeamUp actually work well together when the need calls for it]]. [[TheReveal We eventually find out why]].

** There is Kiri's backstory, which details about his attitude and his lack of trust towards people.

* BelligerentSexualTension: Bossun and Himeko. Himeko is an extremely romantically awkward {{Tsundere}} and while Bossun isn't a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, he is so InnocentlyInsensitive that the end result is much the same. Despite the constant bickering and being in the SheIsNotMyGirlfriend territory, the UnresolvedSexualTension keeps increasing and [[EveryoneCanSeeIt everyone]] considers that they do ''like'' each other.

* BlindWithoutEm: Tsubaki can only see silhouettes if he is not using glasses or contact lenses. In chapter 125, for example, he walks into the Sket Dan room instead of the Student Council's and has a meeting with them thinking they were the Council's members when they just imitated their voices and other certain characteristics.

** For Himeko, being the Tsukkomi is part of her personality, and she gets too involved into it, to the point of even ''scolding'' people for ''not'' doing it. Heck, she also ended up in a Boke and Tsukkomi contest that aired on TV!
** It's ''that'' important for the Sket Dan that there is a chapter dedicated to 'not do tsukkomi' for a day in the clubroom.
* BookDumb: It's stated that Bossun is way too smart than he looks as, but, still... he is not good at math, and he finds it as a problem in his Second Year's finals. This is the guy who can calculate the trajectory of a slingshot projectile ''in seconds''. It's somehow justified because he just needs to be under his concentration mode to study harder. At the end of his finals, he [[SubvertedTrope got the highest mark]]. He's just BrilliantButLazy.

** Special mentions go to both crossover chapters of ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'' and ''Sket Dance''. More notoriously in the Sket Dance's crossover manga chapter, where Bossun breaks into an AuthorAvatar moment for Shinohara himself being grateful to Sorachi Hideaki in Gintoki's place. (This was left out from the anime, though.)

** Koma-chan is super strong, but it is [[HilarityEnsues played more for laughs]]. It's a family trait, by the way.

* CerebusSyndrome: The Trouble Travel arc.

** [[spoiler:Ryosuke and Haru. [[TearJerker Then drama happened]]]].
** [[spoiler: In a dramatical turn, Sawa and Kazuyoshi. Kazuyoshi had feelings for Sawa, and Sawa did as well since they grew up together as ChildhoodFriends. They both loved each other... without the other one knowing, and sadly, this gets downplayed in the "Switch Off" arc. Heck, the jealousy Kazuyoshi felt for Masafumi over Sawa (whom he felt she looked at their relationship such as LikeBrotherAndSister) mostly was what detonated the plot of it.]]
* ChivalrousPervert: Cherry and the rest of the Gesu-ling group (according to them). They will verbally sexually harass any girls they meet, but never physically, and will pridefully receive any punishment from the girls (even from [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower Koma-chan]]). There is also the chapter when Cherry received a confession from a girl, and got really troubled because he didn't want to disappoint her with his pervert tendencies.
* [[ReedRichardsIsUseless Chuuma-sensei Is Useless]]: [[AbsentMindedProfessor Chuuma]]-[[MadScientist sensei]] has, on his way to inventing an effective hair restoration topical (which alone would [[CutLexLuthorACheck net him billions]]), a freaking [[FountainOfYouth de-aging potion]]! Its only flaw? That it might be permanent! It's strictly PlayedForLaughs.

* {{Crossover}}: With ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'' (both manga and anime, quite noticeable that this crossover happens a LONG WAY after "Switch Off" in the manga serialization), ''Manga/{{Bakuman}}'' (in the anime), and ''Inumaru Dashi'' (in one of the Biscuit Dance extras).
* CuteClumsyGirl: Remi-oneesan is this to unbelievable degrees. The reason behind it? [[spoiler:All her family (with exception of his brother) act like that.]]

** Himeko, when she gets angry, can do that as well... Could you have expected it from the former Onihime? (and it seems its a family trait, as well. Her mother was known as the ''Oniyome'' for a reason.)

* TerribleArtist: Himeko is a terrible artist. Roman is somehow even worse, and as an aspiring manga artist she creates [[StylisticSuck nigh-incomprehensible]] works that read like a combination of shojo and [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure JoJo]]. Shojojo. She even won a competition.

* {{Troll}}: Switch can be this at times. In one chapter, Bossun and Himeko has an [[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine anti-tsukkomi competition]]. What did a [[SarcasmMode nice, good friend]] like Switch do? Invite [[NoFourthWall Roman]] and [[ChivalrousPervert Cherry]] to the clubroom, of course!
* {{Tsundere}}: Parodied and exemplified by Saaya ever since her introduction, which started with the discussion of the trope itself due to a dating sim. However, Himeko fits as a ''tsundere'' as well, especially with [[spoiler:Bossun]], amplified during their awkward moments.
* TwinSwitch: In order to defeat the the fortune teller in chapters 103 and 104, [[spoiler: Bossun and Tsubaki (with freshly trimmed eyelashes) switch places]]. When she tries to tell [[spoiler: Bossun]]'s future, it's proved that the fortune teller uses intel on the subject she's reading to make a fortune seem more legitimate. Unique in that [[spoiler: Tsubaki and Bossun are fraternal twins, rather than identical ones.]]
** Sort of pulled when [[spoiler:Shinba is decided to finally resolve all the LoveDodecahedron thing around Saaya in Agata's mind to let him concentrate for the second chance of the Tokyo U entrance exams, when Bossun has to take the role of Tsubaki for a part of the plan. Of course, Tsubaki didn't know anything at all.]]

** Himeko is an inversion and a straight example of this. Her hair was shorter when younger and was definitely not blonde, but later she grew it up to go as the image of the yanki she became. [[spoiler:Kazuyoshi is trying to play as a 'hero', just to apply justice and a well-deserved punishment to the 'bad people' that he digs dark info of, engaging them into a 'Death Fight' which the loser will have all of his 'sins' exposed to the world. He thinks he is one too, at the end, especially driven out of the guilt he still feels, months later after his brother's death. Bossun calls him off after discovering his charade AND receiving help from him to get straight... to him]].

** Bossun and Himeko lampshades it in ''Switch On'', when they find out they don't know anything about technology, if they were going to help their client.

* AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil: A force for good, though somewhat at odds with the Sket Dan's rather loose way of doing things, though the council members themselves aren't exactly normal people.

* ActionGirl: Himeko. She's the primary fighter of the Sket Dan, and is nicknamed "Oni-hime" (ogress) for her fearsome strength.
* AdaptationExpansion: Well, without mentioning that Creator/TatsunokoProductions added fanservice not included in the manga (as mentioned below), the introduction of characters a little bit more earlier than its original source, [[AscendedExtra ascending extras]] and adding characters that, sometimes, little to nothing needed to be in some episodes (blaming the {{fanservice}} in some cases), some single chapter plots were expanded too much into a half hour episode. And since the manga series continued a little bit more after the anime ended[[note]]The anime series ended in September 2012 with an OVA released in February 2013, the manga ended in July 2013[[/note]], it had a GeckoEnding of sorts.
* AlternateUniverse: Multiple Omakes takes place in alternate universe, including a ninja world (''Nusutto Dance''), space opera (''Robot Dance''), a kindergarten world (''Biscuit Dance''), and a JRPG world (''Quest Dance'').

* ArtEvolution: For a series that was running for 6 years, the art notably suffered an evolution in character designs mostly. * ArtShift: Used whenever Roman Saotome activates her "Otome Vision", mentally filtering the world to align with shojo manga. LoveBubbles and BishieSparkle abound.
** Speaking of Roman (and any of the 2 manga club members), everytime her art gets featured in the series (both in the manga AND anime).
** In episode 8 when Momoka is talking about her upcoming audition for a Voice Acting part in an in universe anime series first Himeko and Bossun are drawn in a very simplified fashion until they understand why she needs their help, then when Switch agrees to help her learn about Anime he and Momoka change to a [[Anime/{{Doraemon}} stereotypical simplified anime]] style with heavy outlines, [[BreakingTheFourthWall which Bossun and Himeko (who don't change) actually notice]].

** Lampshaded in the first chapter of the ''Switch On'' arc when Bossun and Himeko flip out because of no one of them knowing about technology matters.

* BackStory: The backstories of all three main characters have been presented at various points in the series. And all three of them are touchy and melodramatic, whether tear-jerking or heartwarming.
** Another one that has been thrown on was Kiri's backstory about his attitude towards trusting other people.

* BigDamnHeroes: The Sket Dan have quite a few, actually. The Student Council counts as well. Even individually.

* {{Bishonen}}: The reason Switch is so popular with the ladies despite being a somewhat unpleasant otaku who speaks with a computer. Also Shinba Michiru, Daimon Akitoshi (when he takes his mask off), Kiri Katou, and thanks to one of Chuuma's experiments, [[spoiler: Bossun ends up as one. The chapter focuses on the fact that the Academy needs a group of reliable and ''pretty'' people to promote it. The people in this group; Bossun, Switch, Daimon, Katou, and Tsubaki who is added because he is the ''little brother'' of Bossun..]]
* BlindWithoutEm: Tsubaki can only see silhouettes when he lost his contacts, in chapter 125 he walks into the Sket Dan room instead of the Student Council's and has a meeting with them thinking they were Council's members when they just imitated their voices and other certain characteristics.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Bossun and Himeko are fond of this, and the two of them often end up acting as the Tsukkomi for their weirder visitors.
** The series' main strength is in the ability of the main trio to, at any given time, have 2 boke and 1 tsukkomi. Which ones plays which roles varies: sometimes Himeko and Bossun do something stupid and the rational Switch tells them off (e.g. invisible Bossun); sometimes Switch and Himeko act like, well, shonen manga characters, and Bossun restores the balance by acting like a normal high schooler (e.g. the first Quiz Battle chapter); and usually Bossun and Switch go insane without the CloserToEarth Himeko.
** Since practically, Himeko gets this much as part of her personality (her having almost TheIdiotFromOsaka stereotype), she gets so much involved into it. There are times she ''scolds'' people for ''not'' doing ''it''. And then, she ALSO ended up participating in a Boke and Tsukkomi ''contest'' that got aired in TV.
** And then, there is a chapter dedicated to 'not do tsukkomi' for a day in the Sket Dan club.

* BratsWithSlingshots: Though most fights consist of Himeko doing the heavy lifting while the others stand in the background and pose, Bossun does have a slingshot that he can use to shoot pachinko balls with remarkable precision.
** During the Osaka Arc, he outright states that he has to use rather soft pachinko balls because it would otherwise be a potentially lethal weapon!

* CerebusSyndrome: The Osaka arc.

* [[ReedRichardsIsUseless Chuuma-sensei Is Useless]]: [[AbsentMindedProfessor Chuuma]]-[[MadScientist sensei]] has, on his way to inventing an effective hair restoration topical (which alone would [[CutLexLuthorACheck net him billions]]), a freaking [[FountainOfYouth de-aging potion]]! It's only flaw? That it might be permanent! It's strictly PlayedForLaughs.

* CuteClumsyGirl: Remi-oneesan is this to unbelievable degrees. It's more unbelievable because it's a [[spoiler:family trait.]]

** Momoka can give a pretty scary one too.
** Himeko, when she gets angry, can do that as well... Could you have expected it from the former Onihime? (and it seems its hereditary since her mom, the former 'Oniyome' when was getting married to her dad, can pull that too in the present...)

* DoubleMeaningTitle: ''Switch Off'' [[spoiler: (The chapter about the past of Switch when he wasn't known with that nickname, and it's also referring to his little brother, Masafumi (and the original Switch)'s death)]] and ''Switch On'' [[spoiler: (where it is not only concluding Switch's backstory when Kazuyoshi started to be known as Switch... a little bit before knowing his future Sket Dan's friends, and before becoming the Switch he is still up until this day)]].

* {{Fanservice}}: Despite the cast's insistence to avoid it, there is plenty of it in the School Trip Rhapsody chapters.
** The second opening of the Anime series is set on a beach so all the female characters are wearing either bikini's or swimming costumes... [[FanDisservice including]] [[BilingualBonus Yabasawa]].
** The third ending is based on this. The girls in their underwear, bubbling, and even Himeko stripping off her nightgown. Unfortunately, it still includes [[FanDisservice Yabasawa]].
** Let's just say that the Anime in general greatly upped the Fanservice, especially in the later episodes and with poor Kura-chan being featured the most. Becoming an interest case since Shinohara really avoids it in the manga (the only 'fanservice' we have in the series besides the afforementioned School Trip Rhapsody arc is the pervert talk of the Gesu club members, ESPECIALLY since the introduction of Cherry and his ChivalrousPervert personality.
** Without even mentioning that one of the anime merchandise are those 'boobs mousepads' featuring not only Mimorin BUT Himeko too!

* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki met a few years ago in their birthday after Bossun defended Tsubaki from some bullies. Due to Tsubaki looking different back then and ALSO him not wearing his glasses, they shouldn't have recognized each other. Or at least it looks like that. This repeats again when both of them are in their first year of high school, now from Tsubaki's side when he heard that "someone"'s birthday was the same as him]].
** From the looks of it, Bossun doesn't seem to remember that he met Switch once [[spoiler:(before all the whole situation that indulged him to become a {{hikikomori}})]], either.
* FountainOfYouth: A result of one of Chuuma's experiments is a youth potion (originally conceived as a hair tonic...) that makes the drinker seem ten years younger. He's also got one that makes the drinker seem [[OvernightAgeUp ten years older]]. Needless to say, HilarityEnsues.
** And finally, after too much experimenting it worked also decreasing the mental age of the user as well!
* FourthWallMailSlot: There was a whole chapter which dealt with the results of the character popularity poll. What makes this poll hilarious is the fact that not only the ''actual'' characters, but even the (in-universe) ''imaginary'' characters and character ''variants'' (e.g. the toddler Bossun after he drank the [[FountainOfYouth youth serum]]) were eligible.
** This is repeated again in the FOLLOWING character poll results, when the Sket Dan has to guess what positions do other characters got in there... of course it's not THAT easy since most of that chapter where one-shot characters, and others weren't properly characters EITHER!

* GadgeteerGenius: Switch, to a degree.
** There is a chapter/episode where he shows his shelved AwesomeButImpractical gadgets. And then Bossun has a MomentOfAwesome when he inventively combines several of these gadgets to save a boy who falls from a building!

* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:Ryosuke and Haru.]]

* ImportantHaircut: Switch in his BackStory, for his own reasons. Tsubaki also makes such a decision when appearing as a minor character in Bossun's backstory ([[spoiler:his hair, though, was a bit more longer during his First Year in Kaimei; and then in the ''Back Then'' chapter, he appears with a shorter haircut, ressembling his present self]]).

* LegacyCharacter: [[spoiler: Introduced in chapter 212, Tact, Silk and Smile, the later known Pocket Dan, to their senpai, the Sket Dan. Though it was a bit more of 'taking over the Sket Dan' when they met, since there shouldn't be two similar clubs in Kaimei High, they will be the next 'helping others' club as soon as Bossun, Switch and Himeko graduate.]]

* BreakingTheFourthWall: On times and times, Bossun, Himeko and/or Switch will do this. But the one that takes the honor in its plenty glory, is Saotome Roman, even when she does not appear on scene, remarking on how long we, the readers/viewers, haven't seen a certain character in the series. Heck, there were the chapters of the 2 popularity polls where the Fourth Wall didn't survived at all (and even the author was dragged in it AS WELL!).
** Special mentions go to both crossover chapters of ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'' and ''Sket Dance''. More notoriously in the Sket Dance's crossover manga chapter, where Bossun breaks into an AuthorAvatar moment for Shinohara himself being grateful to Sorachi Hideaki in Gintoki's place. (This was left out in the anime, though.)
* BrilliantButLazy: The student council president, Agata Soujiro, is portrayed as this.
** Bossun counts as much as well, since Agata pretty much defines he is way too smarter than he is actually. It's just, also, that Bossun is more childish in personality, too.
