* HiddenDepths: "Gap"[[note]]A Japanese term which refers to the contrast between how observers ''expect'' an archetype to behave, and how the person ''actually'' behaves. Or, in other words, the "gap" between expectations and truth.[[/note]] motifs are the main appeal of the series. The premise of the series begins with Junichi's friends pushing him into trying to hook up with Yukana because "[[ReallyGetsAround gals sleep around and give in easily]]", and they think they'd be able to get gals of their own. It swiftly becomes clear that they're totally wrong; Yukana is not just an airheaded bimbo, and is a decent girl that just likes the gal fashion style. The main cast of girls aren't so shallow either. There's also the reveal that the polite, proper [[TheOjou Ojou]] Yui Kashii is actually a stuck-up, scheming BitchInSheepsClothing acting as part-time gal, and IceQueen Iris Kotohayashi being a much kinder and affectionate person that she lets on.

The second year of high school has started, which means boyfriends and girlfriends get to spend the best years of their lives together. Unfortunately, Junichi Hashiba and his friends still find themselves single and hating it. To break the status quo, Junichi's friends have forced him into confessing to the beautiful Yukana Yame. At first, the confession goes south, as Yukana confuses Junichi for a pervert; but surprisingly, she takes a liking to him and agrees to date him. The real challenge, however, is that Junichi has no idea how to lead a relationship. Needless to say, HilarityEnsues.

The series has continuation in 2021, which follows Junichi and Yukana as they go to college. Titled ''My First Girlfriend Is a Gal: College Story'', it brings back some of the old cast but now has the couple rooming together.

** There's also Yui and snakes. Her Stream-name is also boa, a type of snake.

** [[spoiler:Yui Kashii]] as revealed in episode 4, using either her charisma or manipulation to get those around her to do her bidding. She doesn't actually view anyone as people; from her viewpoint, everyone around her is a faceless servant or prop in her life.
** [[spoiler:Dai Mitarai, a CanonForeigner and Yukana's middle school friend from episode 10. Behind his handsome looking demeanor, he is actually sadistic, perverted (even greater than Junichi's friends) and a manipulative jerk. His true colors reveal that he enjoys taking somebody's girlfriend, talking about how easy to make gals like Yukana fell for him, and then ''lets his friends have their way with her once he's done toying with her''! This obviously ticks off Ranko at first, but it also forces Junichi to man up and confront Dai in order to protect Yukana's dignity.]]

* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: Averted at first, as Junichi has lots of naughty ImagineSpot moments early in his relationship with Yukana. However, as their relationship deepens, he experiences less and less of them. The other girls step in to fill in the FanService shots.
* CensorBox: The TV broadcast anime uses various things to hide the lewder parts of the show, such as a woman's hand blocking shots of Yukana during Junichi's ImagineSpot moments. Other things as used as well, such as a disco ball.

** Nene attempts this twice. Before the series began, she played heavily into the [[LittleSisterHeroine Little Sister]] archetype, because she picked up somewhere that Junichi liked those types of girls in media. As soon as she finds out he's dating Yukana, she switches to a GyaruGirl style (but still keeping elements of the "little sister") to get him back. Junichi is too ObliviousToLove to notice either, and the second attempt further fails because Junichi doesn't particularly have a fetish for gals and wound up with Yukana as part of a prank.
** After going through a LoveEpiphany, Yui realizes how cold she's been to Junichi and tries to become better to become his kind of woman. Even when she accepts that she'll probably never become his girlfriend, she still wants to be an ideal [[TheMistress Mistress]] for him.

* EngineeredPublicConfession: When Shinpei discovers that Boa has insulted him and his friends, he prints a picture of her and records her words on his cell phone and shows it to Minoru and Keigo as proof that Yui is [[spoiler:Boa]]. Afterwards, they and Ranko confront Yui about her identity just as she's [[spoiler:blackmailing Junichi]].

* ExcellentJudgeOfCharacter: Yui, Yuki and Ranko are all extremely perceptive and can decipher that someone is acting untrustworthy or are hiding their true feelings/intentions. They also act as {{Foil}}s or spanners for each others' schemes. Of the three, Ranko is usually the victor and {{out gambit|ted}}s even the other two.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Yui tries to [[spoiler:blackmail]] Junichi after their cafe date but gets this in return when Ranko lets slip she knows [[spoiler:Yui is the gyaru streamer Boa.]]

* ItsAllAboutMe: Yui is secretly quite self-centered, and tends to see her classmates as faceless masses and servants. [[spoiler: Junichi is so far the only exception since he doesn't play along with her ego, and it's making her quite angry]].

** [[spoiler: The same goes for Mitarai who is later punished by Ranko and Junichi's friends for bullying both Junichi and Yukana.]]
** When discussing their post-graduation plans, Yui is [[BrutalHonesty brutally honest]] and tells Junichi that following Yukana to her college just to be together is a ''terrible'' idea. She then runs away, terrified that Junichi may hate her or think she just said what she did out of jealousy, when she really ''was'' looking out for his best interests. Later, Junichi seeks her out and tells her that her words opened his eyes, and that he reapplied to a different university...which happens to be the ''same one'' that Yui applied to. She is ''overjoyed'' to realize that she and her beloved Junichi are going to be in the same school together yet again.

* LoveConfession: [[spoiler: After several chapters of angsting, Junichi finally confesses to Yukana in Chapter 37 & episode 10 in the anime]].

* MaamShock: Downplayed example. Minoru is initially interested in Nene when he sees the short girl walking to school with Junichi. However, when she mentions she's around the same age as the rest of them, he's immediately disgusted by it and wants nothing to do with her. Interestingly, it doesn't faze her at all.

* NotGoodWithRejection: Yui attempts a "LoveConfession" to tempt Junichi into dumping Yukana and once again devoting his attention solely to her. He turns her down as politely as he can, and then she quickly leaps off the deep end, ranting that he's her "dog", that she's his "owner" and that he's supposed to obey her. Junichi is completely baffled by this sudden shift in attitude. [[spoiler:Subverted the second time she makes a ''genuine'' confession; she gets rejected again, but she accepts it with dignity, and later tells him that she won't give up and will ''at least'' try to make herself his "Number Two".]]

* PatientChildhoodLoveInterest: Three examples, which all backfire at the start of the series.

** Likewise, Ranko and Junichi's three male friends keep Yui's identity as [=BoA-sama=] a secret.

** At several points in the anime, the newtype sound effect and visual flash from the original ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'' is used for comedic effect, first seen in Episode 1 when Junichi catches a glimpse of Yukana's panties while asking her out. It's later used again when [[spoiler:Shinpei realizes Yui is B.o.A]], and when [[spoiler:Nene and Ranko realize they can use the King Game to score a kiss from their respective love interests]].

** In the manga, Junichi considers trying to invoke FunbagAirbag by
acting like a clutz, specifically pointing to the patron saint of AccidentalPervert, [[Manga/ToLoveRu Rito]].

* KarmicButtMonkey: Yui is a haughty AlphaBitch hiding behind [[BitchInSheepsClothing a dignified and pleasant demeanor]]. However, this illusion is shattered when her favorite "pet", Junichi, begins dating another girl and no longer gives her the same attention. [[GreenEyedMonster Her jealousy]] prompts Yui to hatch multiple {{scheme|r}}s to steal "her dog" back from Yukana, which typically fail and result in her being placed in some kind of humiliating or [[MsFanservice objectifying]] position. [[spoiler:Even after she goes through a LoveEpiphany and JerkassRealization, and no longer sees Junichi as merely a "pet", she still has a habit of scheming to seduce him, usually with the same results. When one character asks why she keeps putting herself through it, she simply states that any chance of being with Junichi is WorthIt.]]

* TookALevelInKindness: Yui goes from being a vain, stuck-up narcissist who sees Junichi as nothing but her loyal dog to a LoveableAlphaBitch who is completely in love with him. She winds up becoming friends with even Yume, Ranko and Nene, and on multiple occasions sacrifices her own shot at getting closer to Junichi to do the right thing on his behalf.

* ValuesDissonance: In the manga, after her feelings for Junichi become clear, Yuki convinces Yui that she needs to quit live streaming. For Western readers, this can seem like a crazy leap of logic, but in Eastern countries, female entertainers (like idols and, indeed, some streamers) often remain single, as they are expected to treat their fans as their "boyfriends", and it's considered "disrespectful" to the audience to give their love/attention to another man. Ranko, however, proves that her audience already ''knew'' she was totally in love with "Doggy" and were actually rooting for her to get her man.

* CasualKink: Yui's common {{Imagine Spot}}s and {{Erotic Dream}}s almost always include her being in some form of bondage or coercion, along with a brief shot of Junichi licking her armpits.

* ACupAngst: When Shinpei mentions Yui has small breasts out loud, you can see her eye twitch for a moment. During the Beach episode, her reactions to seeing [[GagBoobs Nene]] in her swimsuit are not favourable.
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: In the anime, Yui figures out that she's in love with Junichi based on [[GreenEyedEpiphany her jealousy over seeing him with Yukana]] and any other girls. In the manga, it takes slow buildup for Yui to figure out her feelings for Junichi. Well after their argument on the rooftop, she continues to think of him as "Doggy" and continues scheming to get him away from Yukana, intending to get her "pet" back. However, the more she fails and the more jealous she becomes of his relationship with Yukana, the more she gets confused and [[WhatIsThisFeeling wonders why she even cares so much]] and why thinking of Junichi makes her think crazy, perverse things. This goes on for a while, until she learns that her stream chat [[EveryoneCanSeeIt already figured out]] that she's completely hung-up on "Doggy". She then decides to confess her love for real. Another trait that was changed was Yui's decision to change herself to be a worthy mistress of Junichi. In the anime, she tells her stream audience that she tried not to fall in love with Junichi because of his girlfriend, whereas in the manga, she quickly decides that she will never stop loving him and will at least be his "number two".

* AggressiveSubmissive: Despite her bossy and haughty attitude, Yui has always daydreamed about being forced or coerced into sexual situations by Junichi, even ''before'' her LoveEpiphany.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Yuki, Yui's brother, is a crossdresser that reacts very favourably to attention from both men and women. He is also a ''massive'' [[TheTease flirt and tease, being extremely forward to and sexually flustering Junichi and friends, as well as the girls, on multiple occasions]]. It's unknown whether his various advances are legitimate or he's just playing TheGadfly.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Ranko has had tanned skin since she was young, and now it fits her gal image well.

* BrokenAce: Yui Kashii is smart, beautiful and popular, but being showered with unending praise and attention for her talents gave her an enormous ego wherein she believes the whole world exists "for her". Everyone else is either a butler, a maid, a sycophantic fan, or a pet. [[spoiler:When her favorite "pet", Junichi, starts paying more attention to his new girlfriend, she sees this as a "dog" showering someone else with the love meant for their "owner". It takes a long while for her to truly understand why this bothers her so much, and growing out of this mentality.]]

* ButNotTooForeign: Iris Kotohayashi, the Student Council President, is a dual-Nationality of Japanese and French.

* CanonForeigner: Dai Mitarai was created as an anime-only character.

* CharacterDevelopment: Junichi goes from trying to date Yukana just to eventually lose his virginity and thinking she's "easy" to taking his relationship with her seriously.

* ClassRepresentative: Yui Kashii, who possesses both brains and beauty, is the class representative for class 2-G and idolized by her classmates (which has over-inflated her massive ego).

* CovertPervert: Once her feelings for him are in full swing, Yui constantly schemes to find ways to be held, groped or "accidentally" kissed by Junichi, trying to keep up her appearance as a dignified young lady.

* ComedicLolicon: A one-off joke about Minoru looking for even younger women after [[spoiler:Nene rejects him]] has been expanded to a full-on obsession with elementary school girls in the anime.

* EntitledBitch: Yui begins the series feeling entitled to the adoration and respect she gets from everyone around her, often expressing her entitled beliefs to a sycophantic audience in her "[=BoA=]" persona. She gradually grows out of it, somewhat, though she remains extremely haughty and proud.
* EntitledToHaveYou: Having known Junichi since middle school, and having the beauty and demeanor to get him to do anything she wants, Yui enjoyed seeing him as her personal "dog". When he begins dating Yukana, she becomes extremely furious that she's no longer (in her mind) the center of his world.

* MagneticGirlfriend: PlayedWith. After Yukana became his girlfriend, Junichi suddenly gets asked out or propositioned for sex by three separate girls. However, one of them (Ranko) has no real interest in him and only wanted to seduce him to break up his relationship with Yukana, one of them (Yui) may have at a tiny crush on him that she didn't realize until [[GreenEyedEpiphany he found another girl]] and one of them (Nene) has been openly pining for him since grade school.

* OlderThanTheyLook: Other than her large chest and the fact that she goes to high school alongside the other characters, one would be forgiven for thinking Nene is a middle-schooler.

* PassiveAggressiveKombat: Nene's preferred method of attack is to "innocently" and cheerfully invade Junichi's space (''especially'' when he's with another girl), all the while keeping up her pretense of being a sweet, cheerful young child. If the other girl(s) start to get angry, Nene plays it off as if ''their'' anger is unjustified, often making subtle digs at the other woman's age, breast size, style, etc. to belittle her in front of Junichi.

* SpeakingLikeTotallyTeen: Nene's attempts at gyaru slang.

* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Ranko is a ButchLesbian who can beat the crap out of several dudes, and she happens to love to go shopping with Yukana.

* TheTrickster: Yuki Kashii is a diabolical underclassman, gleefully pushing the other characters' buttons, and manipulating them into doing what he wants. His intentions are usually benign; originally, he selfishly wanted his sister to return to being a CoolBigSis rather than the awkward, SmittenTeenageGirl she was becoming thanks to Junichi. His actions are what lead to the LoveEpiphany that solidifies Yui's decision to be a better person. While this wasn't quite what he intended, Yuki is still satisfied, as his big sister has regained her coolness and confidence again.
* {{Tsundere}}:
** Yui Kashii begins as a snobbish AlphaBitch who only sees Junichi as her "dog". It's all but stated later that she was probably in love with him from the very beginning but was too scared to fully embrace her feelings, and so justified them by seeing Junichi as her servant whom she was [[EntitledToHaveYou entitled to have]]. After he gets a girlfriend, she [[GreenEyedEpiphany becomes angry about it]] but isn't sure why; in the manga, she continues treating him as "just a dog" until her younger brother forces her to confront her true feelings. After which, she devotes herself entirely to earning Junichi's love.
** Ranko starts out intensely jealous of Junichi, as she has been trying to entice Yukana into a same-sex relationship for years. Even after she accepts that the two love each other, she still belittles and teases him, only begrudgingly accepting their relationship to not hurt Yukana. She also repeatedly teases him, trying to entice him into cheating on Yukana. As time passes, she comes to genuinely like him as a friend and finally gives up on trying to steal Yukana from him.
** Iris Kotohayashi is a very [[TheStoic stern]], [[IceQueen cold]] and [[MoralGuardians prudish]] StudentCouncilPresident who at first opposes the gals (especially Yukana, their de-facto leader) and Junichi, whom she sees as a pervert intentionally building a harem around himself. Despite her constant antagonizing, Yukana still acts graciously accepts Iris's actions and even defends her with the rest of the cast try to retaliate against her. This earns Iris's friendship, and while she still puts on an act of being cold and harsh, it's clear that she's become a [[CoolBigSis surrogate big sister]] to Yukana and wants to look after her.

* WhatTheHellHero: Ranko gets really pissed at Junichi in episode 9 when she's sitting in a restaurant with Yukana, Nene, and Yui, and Yukana starts unintentionally crying. She was ready to give him a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown until he tells her he realizes he was being selfish towards her recently.
* WhenSheSmiles: Early on, Junichi notes that there's something "odd" about the way Yui smiles, and the audience is meant to recognize that this because she is a StepfordSmiler who hides [[BitchInSheepsClothing her nastier, selfish personality]] behind a pleasant façade. After she genuinely falls in love with Junichi and resolves to be a better person to earn his love, she begins showing her real, genuine smile, and it is unbelievably sweet and adorable.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Yuki Kashii, the younger brother of Yui, tends to wear the female school uniform as well as grow his hair out to look like a girl, giving him the nickname "Boy-Kun". He also gets his fair share of fan service as if he was a woman, such as flirting and teasing with Junichi and his friends, flashes of his panties, and erotic fantasies, as well as being considered very beautiful by the rest of the school.
