** McCracken's college assignment that spawned the series, Whoopass Stew (the title alone should make it clear which demographic he ''wasn't'' shooting for), went as follows. Girls beat the crap out of the Ganggreen Gang. Amoeba Boys rob a bang. Girls try to stop them but get stuck in their bodies. Girls prevail by flying to the sun, which kills the Amoeba Boys in seconds. Yeah. Not exactly tote bag-friendly icons, huh?

* ''ThePowerpuffGirls'' was not originally intended for little girls. Craig [=McCracken=] created it as a parody of the MagicalGirl genre, as he was getting sick of ''Anime/SailorMoon'' playing on CartoonNetwork every day. As a TakeThat, he set the girls' ages very low, had them do very inelegant things, and made the villains cheesier than Kraft dinners. The intended audience for it was the same as ''DextersLaboratory'' -- animation fans in their teens, 20s, and 30s -- but it [[AnimationAgeGhetto had to be child-appropriate]]. (This was in the days before AdultSwim.) A show like this naturally attracted little girls anyway.

After the initial shock is over you start to wonder why any man would even consider watching a show like this. [[{{Moe}} Well, it's because men like cute girls]].

Though it's not to say that this show would be inappropriate for your little sister, it's just that it's not specifically intended for little girls to watch. In fact these kinds of shows often have a sizeable [[PeripheryDemographic female]] [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer fanbase]].

Of course, it must be noted that entertainment often targeted to young girls, especially in the field of music, has become increasingly sexualized. The classic examples are groups such as BritneySpears, The SpiceGirls, and DestinysChild. The effect has blurred the line in a way many are uncomfortable with: just take a look at any "''ToddlersAndTiaras''" type show.

A subtrope of WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids. Not to be confused with a SubvertedKidsShow which is meant for HighOctaneNightmareFuel or a show that ''is'' for little girls but also has [[PeripheryDemographic an older male fanbase]].

* ''LuckyStar'' a show with lots of pretty colors, [[ImageSong cute songs]], and a [[{{Shoujo}} mostly female cast.]] Except that it's a show about a [[OtakuSurrogate girl]] who plays {{Eroge}} and [[GenreSavvy sees her life as if she was playing one.]]
** I feel sorry for the parents who show ''LuckyStar'' to their kid only to have them ask "What's Yaoi?"
*** Or for the parent who turns on their computer to see [[http://e-shuushuu.net/images/2008-01-17-85598.jpeg this]] as the desktop wallpaper.
* ''AzumangaDaioh'' is about the lives of a bunch of high school girls. The manga is serialized in Dengeki Daioh a {{Shounen}} magazine mostly read by older males.
** Also serialized in Dengeki Daioh is ''{{Yotsuba}}'' and ''IchigoMashimaro''. Both are about cute little girls and both are read by older males.
* ''{{Keion}}''
* ''HidamariSketch''
* ''HanamaruKindergarten''
* ''MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha''
* Subverted in ''FutariWaPrettyCure'' a show that's intended for both little girls and [[ParentalBonus adults]].
* If you just saw the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4k6HWcf6jM ending theme]] for ''{{Clannad}}'' then you would think that it's for very young little girls.
* ''PrettyFace''
* ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''
* ''KoiCupid''
* Averted for ''StrikeWitches'' since it's a show about girls who [[{{Fanservice}} don't wear pants]].
* ''HigurashiNoNakuKoroNi'' could follow this trope. If you missed the RRatedOpening and only saw the cute parts.
* ''ChisSweetHome'' is about a cute little kitty cat and it's in a... {{Seinen}} manga magazine.
* ''TanteiOperaMilkyHolmes''

[[AC:Music]]
* There's a video of a five-year-old girl singing the "voulez-vous coucher avec moi c'est soir?" line from "Lady Marmalade." Presumably the train of thought was "It's about dancing, right? Girls love dancing!" Too bad it's not about dancing, it's about a prostitute, and the line translates to "do you want to sleep with me tonight?"

[[AC:Western Animation]]
* ''ThePowerpuffGirls'' was not originally intended for little girls. Craig [=McCracken=] created it as a parody of the MagicalGirl genre, as he was getting sick of ''SailorMoon'' playing on CartoonNetwork every day. As a TakeThat, he set the girls' age very low, had them do very un-elegant things, and made the villains cheesier than Kraft dinners. The intended audience for it was the same as ''DextersLaboratory'': Animation fans in their teens, 20s, and 30s, but had to be child-appropriate due to there being no AdultSwim yet. A show like this naturally attracted little girls though. Cartoon Network seeing this, someone there created a marketing empire catered for them.

A subtrope of WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids. Not to be confused with a SubvertedKidsShow which is meant for HighOctaneNightmareFuel or a show that is for little girls but has [[PeripheryDemographic an older male fanbase]].

So you find a new show and it has an [[{{Shoujo}} all female cast]], lots of pastel colors, and TastesLikeDiabetes levels of [[{{Kawaisa}} cuteness]]. And you think "this would be a perfect show for my eight-year-old sister."

Kuragehime is only an example if you don\'t pay attention to anything other than the translated title and Clara; the series itself doesn\'t fit the trope description. Also corrected the \"Lady Marmalade\" reference - I couldn\'t tell what the additional note on that was trying to say, so it\'s been trimmed until someone can clarify.

* There's a video of a five-year-old girl singing "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir" from ''MoulinRouge'', presumably the train of thought was "It's about dancing, right? Girls love dancing!". Too bad that line literally means "Do you want to sleep with me tonight".
** one Canadian TV shows had kids from 4 to 10 singing popular songs. Cute eh? No so much when the songs they sing ends up translating to "I want to do the etc. with you" of the "do you want to sleep with me tonight" mentioned above.

* ''{{Kuragehime}}'' is called Princess Jellyfish on streaming sites. That's about a princess that's a jellyfish, right?
** If you just saw the pictures on Funimation's video portal you might mistake it for a {{Shoujo}} show. And Clara is a CuteAnimalMascot. Thought on the other hand there is the title of the first episode.
