It uses a ranking system where you can choose your opponent and after defeating enough opponents, you'll advance in rank and be able to challenge stronger foes. The solo arena is notable for the fact that each member of your party is ranked separately, meaning that if you plan on getting their battle trophies for becoming the arena champ, you'll inevitably have to have them fight each another at some point.
