* The [[VirtualCelebrity CGI actress]] Aki Ross from ''[[FinalFantasyTheSpiritsWithin Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within]]'' was supposed to have a long "career" as an actress, the intention was for the computer model created for the movie to be used in multiple projects unrelated to ''Final Fantasy'' and spanning multiple media formats. "She" even got a photo spread in ''Maxim'', including a plot on their "Hottest Women" list, and was promoted as the very first in what would be a long line of virtual actors. The failure of the movie to even recoup is production costs, which were astronomical, and subsequent [[AuthorExistenceFailure collapse of the studio that financed it]] resulted in a somewhat shorter career than numerous magazines had been predicting.

* AngelinaJolie. Years of indie-cred roles in ''Gia'' and other films paid off with a big push from ''[=~Girl, Interrupted~=]'' in 1999, which won her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and resulted in a near-endless push that got her big roles in such films as ''TombRaider'' and ''[[MrAndMrsSmith Mr. & Mrs. Smith]]''. When the latter got her together with BradPitt, the "Brangelina" media juggernaut was born. Clearly a major success story for everyone involved, as her films do generally well (though she stopped making them so quickly and focused on her home life and activist work), and the magazines get to make money off of her image (proof that being tabloid-bait isn't ''always'' a bad thing -- it just is if that's ''all'' you're known for). Ironically, Jolie has stated on several occasions that she wants to give up acting for her growing family.

Then came ''{{Daredevil}}'', ''{{Gigli}}'' and the entire Bennifer saga, which derailed his career so badly that he wouldn't do any movies at all in 2005. He even became a Hollywood punchline in that era. Still, he mostly stays out of the limelight, and his steep fall after his big Hollywood push came ''very'' close to pushing him over the fence into "didn't hold up" territory -- the only thing that kept him out was his relatively quick comeback and his continued bankability with more minor films.

* Katherine Heigl should theoretically have set a new record for the fastest pissing away of a promising career. After several years of TV appearances in stuff like ''{{Roswell}}'' and ''GreysAnatomy'' she gained a lot of fans for her appearance in ''KnockedUp''... only to throw them all away within weeks, as she did a very vocal interview where she attacked basically everyone involved in the film, accusing director JuddApatow of being "sexist" as well as calling lead actor Seth Rogen "a slob," among other things. This instantly turned her into probably the most hated woman in the film industry today (only avoiding being the most hated of all time because, as JonStewart pointed out, "Leni Riefenstahl isn't around anymore"), but since that interview Heigl has proven to be something of a KarmaHoudini, since her more recent works, ''28 Dresses'', ''The Ugly Truth'' and ''{{Killers}}'', have actually done very well at the box office despite appallingly bad reviews. It remains to be seen whether she can continue this run, although most film fans [[{{Understatement}} would rather she didn't]].

Again I'm not married to putting Aki on the list, but she fits even better than Batwoman, with photo spreads in Maxim, "Hottest Women" lists and predictions of an actual "career," all of which are mentioned in the intro to this page.

* Elizabeth Berkley was supposed to be the Next Big Thing with ''{{Showgirls}}''. Too bad that trainwreck of a film completely derailed whatever film career she may have had. The fallout was so bad that when she requested $2,500 to be interviewed for the V.I.P. DVD edition of the film, she was ''turned down''. Ouch.

Okay, this might be a bit of a stretch, but I'm putting Batwoman on the list. I know she's a fictional character, but hear me out. When she was reintroduced in 2007 there was a massive media blitz, focuses on her writers and backgrond and all that, and predictions for her coming importance and spotlight, even in media not related to comic books. It was classic Hollywood Hype Machine, even if she's not a real person. If somebody feels strongly against this I won't object too strongly if she's taken out (She is, afterall, not real), but it does seem to fit the trope exactly.

to:

* The fictional character {{Batwoman}}. When the character was announced as appearing in the weekly comic series ''FiftyTwo'' in 2007 there was a massive media response, even branching into non-comic related formats. The character was a [[ContinuityReboot recreation of the classic character from the 1950's]], but was written as a lesbian involved with [[TheQuestion Renee Montoya]], one of the primary characters for the series. Most of the media focus was on her sexuality, and she became regarded as the highest profile gay superhero in TheDCU. DanDidio, Chief Editor of DCComics, has said that even he was completely unprepared for the massive news fixation on the character, and did not know how to properly respond. However, the amount of coverage on the character was completely out of proportion to her role in the series, which was a supporting role spread out over a year, and she spent the following two years as a minor and unused character, only appearing in guest spots in other series. However, in 2009 she became the [[CareerResurrection headline character]] in ''DetectiveComics'' and will be receiving her own series in 2011.

Not only did [[NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity the video turn her into a mega-star virtually overnight]], it also established the home sex tape as a viable route for would-be celebrities and fading stars to boost their careers. Lately, she seems to have settled back into modeling and reality TV.

* TomCruise got a big push in TheEighties, and tons of film roles. Virtually every one proved to be a success. Obviously, he kept on being famous and having huge box office smashes until he royally screwed up and [[CreatorBreakdown went crazy]] in the mid-2000s. Twenty years? A pretty good run. Currently, he and the Hype Machine are going into overdrive to re-make him as a successful A-Lister, as he pokes fun at himself with humorous roles, and tries to fit back into the "romantic Action Hero" archetype once again. ''Mission: Impossible IV'' has been green-lit, and will hopefully do better than the third, which helped ''start'' his decline in the first place.

Hype Machine burnout can be caused by other factors as well. Obviously, having your films fail to sell tickets is the easiest way for Hollywood to leave you behind, but it is sometimes the actors themselves that cause it. In some cases, an actor [[CelebrityIsOverrated might not like the attention]] that he or she is getting from magazines, paparazzi and studios, and may take a long hiatus or even walk away from it all in order to [[IJustWantToBeNormal get back to having a normal life]]. Other times, the sudden fame and fortune that accompanies the Hype Machine may overwhelm the actor, causing him or her to make... ''mistakes'', such as getting arrested or addicted to drugs. Or sometimes, they become [[IAmNotSpock so associated with a particular role]] that they have a hard time breaking out of it.

it.

And sometimes, not even the might of the Hype Machine can determine what the public's tastes are going to be. In certain cases, a particular performer may be groomed by the Hype Machine to become the Next Big Thing, with starring roles and major publicity all lined up for them, only for another performer with a nominally smaller role to become an EnsembleDarkhorse by delivering a performance which completely steals all the Next Big Thing's thunder. This often has the result that the Darkhorse becomes the focus of the public's interest and, in many cases, ends up becoming the ''actual'' Next Big Thing, often having a more durable and successful career than the performer who's thunder they stole.

While most critics focused on the [[SoBadItsHorrible (numerous) other problems]] the film had, those who ''did'' talk about Fox didn't think much of her performance to say the least. It should be said, though, that the filmmakers specifically intended for her to have that role from the beginning. Jessica biel isn't really an "it" girl anymore as she's currently having financial problems due to in her words 'not being offered any roles for months"

A warning to current "It People" MeganFox, Jessica Biel, and the cast of ''{{Twilight}}'' -- the time will come when you ''will'' have to prove yourselves, or else. In fact, just being ''called'' an "It Girl" seems to be a curse in Hollywood.
