* ''Film/TheWizardOfOz'' is as close as it comes to a TropeNamer: one of the first things Glinda asks Dorothy is if she's "a good witch, or a bad witch". The difference, it seems, is that the good witches get full names, while all the bad witches get is a cardinal direction (the wicked witches of East and West, respectively). Alongside the three witches, there's also a Wizard, although the twist is that [[ItWasHisSled the wizard has been faking it the whole time]].

* Zigzagged and deconstructed in ''Theatre/{{Wicked}}''. Neither Elphaba nor Galinda is remotely "bad" at the beginning of the story - Elphaba has been continually discriminated against for her unusual skin color, and Galinda is a bit of an AlphaBitch, but they eventually come to respect each other and are fast friends. But when Elphaba decides to take a stand against the rights of Talking Animals being taken away, she becomes Public Enemy Number 1, and is forced to go underground to continue her work while Galinda (now Glinda) becomes the face of the government and is declared a "good" witch. Eventually, Elphaba decides [[ThenLetMeBeEvil that if she's going to be labeled as "evil", she may as well act it]] (although the only evil things she does are imprison [[HeroOfAnotherStory Dorothy]] to get her sister's shoes back). By the end of the show, Glinda resolves to be the good witch the people think she is, and Elphaba escapes Oz once and for all.
** Elphaba's sister, Nessarose, on the other hand, plays it straight. Crippled and wheelchair-bound her whole life, [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope she goes mad with power after becoming the ruler of Munckinland]] [[IfICantHaveYou in order to keep her munchkin husband Boq from leaving her]]. She eventually gives herself the ability to walk and removes Boq's heart to prevent him from leaving her, just before [[Film/TheWizardOfOz a house from Kansas lands directly on top of her]].

Some witches (like Wiccans) feel that cursing is wrong under any circumstance, while some witches see cursing as a form of protection (like cursing a serial killer to be shot dead by police). * Dark Elves are evil or require specific qualifers, especially because "Elf" tends to have [[OurElvesAreBetter a more specific meaning nowadays]]. Ironically, the "modern" [[OurDwarvesAreAllTheSame Dwarf]] is probably more faithful to the original Norse idea, and don't need specific moral qualifiers; ''drow'', often conflated with dark elves in modern fantasy, were originally a goblin-like fairy of Scottish folklore.
* Most oni (a sort of Japanese ogre) who appear in {{anime}} tend to be rather nasty creatures, even though this isn't part of the original mythos. "Good" oni tend to be just dumb brutish creatures.
* Modern stories set in WizardingSchool handily remove the need for moral qualifiers by making Wizarding academic. (You don't ban physics classes because it makes {{Mad Scientist}}s, after all.)
