** The species=race thing is deliciously subverted in Canales and Guarnido's Blacksad, where one arc confronts white supremacists of several species - wolves, polar bears, cats and so on - which makes their political position seem even more absurd.
*** Naylor probably chose hyenas because people just associate the animal with Africa, anyway. More unnerving is how many of them are depikted tawkin' like dis.

* In some sense, this trope is TruthInTelevision. Furries aren't necessarily easier to draw, but it's easier to get away with flaws when drawing furries. The human brain has very specialized centers for interpreting human faces, but there is no equivalent for animals, which end up getting processed with generalized optical centers. As a result, minor flaws in human faces will be picked up on, where as bigger flaws in animal faces will go completely unnoticed.
* Another reason that occasionally pops up is that, except in specific cases, drawing furries bypasses most matters regarding character race. Can't decide if someone is black or white? Answer: make them a cat.
** Some inversions of this include Art Spiegelman's "Maus" (Jews are mice, Germans are cats, etc.) and Jay Naylor's "Better Days" (and it's sequel "Original Life") in which hyenas are specifically supposed to represent blacks (no Unfortunate Implications in that, is there?)

* Check out the DVD extra's for Disney's RobinHood. It shows several pieces of concept art for a realistic Robin and Maid Marian. Like other realistic human figures at the time, these would have been rotoscoped. The narrator claims the decision was made to use Furries because it would be funny to see animals acting like people. Bullshit. Cartoon animals had been around for fifty years before the film was made. It would be easier to animate the faces, you could get away with more slapstick, you didn't need an actor to rotoscope. Also, your human Robin Hood looked like crap.

* A variation on this comes from Swedish cartoonist Martin Kellerman, whose autobiographical comic uses anthropomorphic characters not because he is unable to draw humans, but because the things that the characters in the strip do are too embarrassing to depict with human characters (and they're based on himself and his real-life friends).

** This series also clearly displays an interesting side effect of this trope: furries are easier to tell apart. Ruby Quest is done in a very simplistic style. The different animal features make it possible to identify who's who.

* Similar to the WolfsRain example, Yoshihiro Takahashi's works tend to invert this. Especially the anime adaptation of GingaDensetsuWeed - the dogs can look so strange as to be cringe-worthy. GingaNagareboshiGin suffers from this as well, but not quite as badly. Humans in these series, on the other hand, tend to be rather well-drawn.
