* ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'' has seen a number of follow-ups in other media showing what became of the crew after the series presented only three of the ''Enterprise'''s five-year mission. First there was ''WesternAnimation/StarTrekTheAnimatedSeries'' which continued the mission on Saturday mornings. Then there was ''Film/StarTrekTheMotionPicture'' which gave some ideas of what the crew had been up to since the mission wrapped up, including Kirk's promotion to admiral, [=McCoy=]'s retirement and Spock's pursuit of Vulcan Kolinahr, the abandonment of all emotion. ''Then'' came a trilogy of Star Trek novels collectively titled ''The Lost Years'' to fill the gap between the show's cancellation and the first movie. Finally there are IDW Comics' series ''Year Four'' and ''Year Five'' with their own takes on what happened during the mission's final two years, with the first issue of ''Year Four'' picking up immediately after the last televised episode.

Added DiffLines:

* While ''{{Film/Stargate}}'' was developed into a television show, it took a lot of liberties with the film's canon, and went in an entirely different direction. Author Bill [=McCay=] took Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's notes, and wrote five novels that are very different from ''Series/StargateSG1'', but follow the original plan for the film franchise.

Adding a live-action movie aversion.

Added DiffLines:

* The ''Film/{{Divergent}}'' series of films is an infamous aversion. After producers thought they could follow in the footsteps of Franchise/HarryPotter and Literature/TheHungerGames by adapting the last book into two movies, ''The Divergent Series: Allegiant'' performed so poorly that the producers soon scrapped their plans for a theatrical conclusion and instead began looking for ways to wrap up the story on television. After the cast (most notably Creator/ShaileneWoodley) emphasized their unwillingness to work on a television project, those plans were soon scrapped as well, leaving the series ultimately unresolved (unless one goes back to read the books).

Expanding the TV example for Star Trek: The Original Series.

%% Does not specify what medium Season 4 is * ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'' has ''Season 4'', a direct continuation of the original series. The first issue, in fact, picks up immediately after the last televised episode with them transferring the (imprisoned) antagonist to another ship.
* While the first ''Film/{{Star Trek|The Motion Picture}}'' movie wasn't intended to wrap up the [[Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries Original Series]] storyline, later movies did eventually finish it pretty much conclusively, particularly ''Film/StarTrekGenerations''.

Adding another live-action TV example.

Added DiffLines:

* ''Series/AlienNation'' ended its sole season on a cliffhanger which eventually saw two resolutions elsewhere, first with the novel ''Dark Horizon'' and then with a TV movie also called ''Dark Horizon''. The book novelizes both the cliffhanger episode "Green Eyes" and the unproduced script for what would have been the season 2 opener. The TV movie, produced years later, retcons certain events from "Green Eyes" to provide a self-contained story with noticeably older characters.

* ''Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico''[='=]s story was meant to be concluded in a sequence of novels and [[TheMovie a trilogy of movies]]. However, due to unknown disagreements among the people involved in the production, the audience was still LeftHanging. There were a few supplementary materials (two video games and the ''Anime/{{Gekiganger 3}}'' OVA) that did at least wrap up the main story of the ''show''. However, few outside of Japan have ever seen the video games - most annoyingly, the second one, which was supposed to conclude the series once and for all.

This trope is about a work that receives an ending in a different form of media after the original fails get a proper ending due to being abruptly cancelled, not about works gaining sequels in other mediums.
