A common [[AnimeCharacterTypes Japanese character type]], the Bastard Boyfriend (in Japanese, ''kichiku'', literally "brutal" or "demonic") character is an AlwaysMale {{Love Interest|s}} whose defining trait is that he is cold, cruel, or abusive to his romantic partner, in a manner intended to be kinky and appealing to the audience. Western versions exist, but are comparatively rare due to their implications, except in fanfiction (which lacks the watchful eyes of MoralGuardians).

Bastard Boyfriends can be readily distinguished from being a {{Jerkass}} or committing DomesticAbuse because their abuse is [[{{Fanservice}} eroticized]], and their beloved's conflict and unhappiness will be played for titillation. As such, they are all-but-guaranteed to be MrFanservice, usually a {{Bishonen}}, and the consequences of their behavior are almost never [[DeconstructedTrope handled realistically]]. The Bastard Boyfriend ''almost always'' [[OfficialCouple gets his girl (or guy)]], even in cases where they [[StrangledByTheRedString don't seem particularly compatible]], although a few are doomed to merely be [[RomanticFalseLead the rival]].

This type is common in YaoiGenre (as a standard {{Seme}} type), {{Shoujo}}, and, to a lesser extent, {{Josei}} romances, but comparatively rare in works aimed at a male audience, where guys like this are more likely to be the RomanticFalseLead or just a {{villain|ousCrush}}.

Their love interest, which can be either male or female, is usually TheProtagonist, although a minority of stories are from the Bastard Boyfriend's point of view. They will probably be presented as a LoveMartyr or TheWoobie, and is likely to spend quite a bit of the story [[{{Angst}} anguishing over the relationship]], possibly while [[SparklingStreamOfTears weeping beautifully]]. This trope has next to no overlap with BelligerentSexualTension since Bastard Boyfriends never seem to show an interest in anyone with the backbone to defy them.

Bastard Boyfriends come in two major types:

'''Unconflicted''' (standard): Poised, confident, and perfectly happy with his own behavior, either because he [[ItsAllAboutMe doesn't care what the other party thinks of him]], genuinely believes that abduction and molestation are [[StalkingIsLove viable ways of showing his affection]], or [[ForTheEvulz just is a plain, sadistic bastard]]. The BespectacledBastardBoyfriend (''Kichiku Megane'') subtrope is built on this type.

'''Conflicted''' (alternate): TroubledButCute and his abusiveness is generally driven by [[GreenEyedMonster jealousy]], insecurity, [[CannotSpitItOut a crushing inability to express his feelings]], a DarkAndTroubledPast that completely screwed up with his view of the world, or (very rarely) a desire to [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim drive the other person away]] (possibly out of a belief that they will be [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy happier with someone else]]). This type may have started as an attempt at a [[DeconstructedTrope more realistic]] implementation of the character type.

Both kinds are highly likely to be [[CrazyJealousGuy jealous and possessive]]. Expect plots to feature a GreenEyedEpiphany -- a character realizing their love only via jealousy.

The Bastard Boyfriend is likely to be [[LoveRedeems redeemed]] by ThePowerOfLove at the end of the book; alternately, he may eventually be revealed to be [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold nicer underneath]]. A minority may be revealed to have a FreudianExcuse (such as AbusiveParents or [[LoveHurts extremely bad former romances]]). If none of these things happen, his partner may decide that StalkingIsLove and embrace their status as a LoveMartyr. Along the way, the Bastard Boyfriend may well be MasterOfTheMixedMessage, if the author needs something to keep his partner strung along.

Mature-rated works that have Kichiku characters are likely to involve [[MindGameShip psychological abuse]], rather rapey behavior, and maybe some {{B|oundAndGagged}}DSM. PG-rated examples tend to be [[TallDarkAndSnarky cold, aloof, or sarcastic]]. In either case, fan reaction tends to be polarized: either they're [[PerverseSexualLust hot and sexy]] and their love affair is {{squee}}able, or they're total {{Jerkass}}es and the relationship is {{squick}}tastic.

Works that contain StalkerWithACrush or MadLove relationships are likely to attract [[DracoInLeatherPants fan interpretations]] where the characters are recast along these lines.

SpearCounterpart of BastardGirlfriend. Usually a type of RomanticizedAbuse and subtrope to AllGirlsWantBadBoys, with a side order of EvilIsSexy. If the Kichiku character also has status, power, and [[GlassesAreSexy hot little glasses]], he's a ''kichiku megane'' (see BespectacledBastardBoyfriend). Contrast the {{Jerkass}} varieties of RomanticFalseLead and the DisposableFiance, who are superficially similar but guaranteed ''not'' to get the girl, DomesticAbuse, and UnsexySadist, who have the cruelty minus the fetishization.

'''A Handy Chart to determine if a character is this trope''':\\
Your guy is in love, and he demonstrates his love in an abusive or predatory manner. His love interest:
* Wants nothing to do with him: StalkerWithACrush
* Finds his behavior romantic: StalkingIsLove
* Abuses him back: BelligerentSexualTension
* Is unhappy and conflicted, and:
** The author wants you to think he is a {{Jerkass}} and his love interest is a saint for putting up with him: DomesticAbuse and LoveMartyr
** The author wants you to think he is a walking fanservice repository ''because'' of this situation: This Trope.

'''{{Shoujo}}/{{Josei}} examples''':
* Kyo in ''Manga/BlackBird'': wants to marry female lead Misao, who he has been in love with [[PuppyLove since they were children]], and [[IntimateHealing licks her erotically]] when she gets attacked by his fellow demons (which is often). Doesn't seem to care that she's not completely on board with either of these ideas. Then she falls in love with him...but the saddest thing is, [[StockholmSyndrome he's one of the few reliable allies that she has in the whole Tengu vs. humans deal]], so if she ''did'' fully spurn him, other Tengus would jump at the chance to kill/rape/eat her. [[TheChewToy Still sucks to be her.]] In the end, of course, he ''is'' willing to do anything (including killing his own brother) to keep her happy and safe at the expense of his own life, and he ''does'' [[PetTheDog show genuine kindness]] [[FriendToAllChildren to children]].
* Director Domoto in ''Manga/ButterfliesFlowers'' (but only when in dictatorial-boss mode).
* The male leads created by Creator/MayuShinjo have different degrees of this. The better-known example is Sakuya Ookochi from ''Manga/SensualPhrase'': this is largely because of an incident where his girlfriend Aine Yukimura ended up with a hickey (due to assault from another character); Sakuya, in a fit of jealousy, barged into her class, tore her uniform to reveal the hickey (and her bra strap), then took her home (while class was ongoing) and prepared to rape her. Only when her uniform was almost totally ripped off and the poor girl was weeping hysterically did he stop and realize WTF he was doing. Yeah, he's a Conflicted type with an ''extremely'' DarkAndTroubledPast (as in, [[spoiler: he's a HeroicBastard ChildByRape, his "father" left him when he learned baby Sakuya wasn't his kid, he was bullied all the time because of his heritage, and his LadyDrunk mom drank herself to death when he was a child]]) and ''[[CharacterizationMarchesOn does]]'' [[CharacterizationMarchesOn get kinda better with time]], [[spoiler:the WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue shows him as a decent father and husband, if somewhat of a LovableSexManiac when he and Aine are alone]], but that's '''not''' an excuse.
** Don't forget Hakuron from ''Manga/HaouAiren''. Yeah, he ''is'' seriously screwed up after being raised in TheTriadsAndTheTongs, [[spoiler: and killed his father among MANY other things]], and he ''does'' admit to Kurumi that he's fucked up, but that doesn't erase how, the moment he met Kurumi, he tried to keep her from making a noise by ''threatening to rape her''. (And later, well, he ''does''. For three days straight, even.)
** And then there's both Hanamaki and Gin from ''Manga/LoveCeleb'', to different degrees. Ironically, Gin's BigBrotherMentor was...Sakuya, another BB.
** And in ''Manga/AkumaNaEros'' (Virgin Crisis), the first famous Mayu Shinjo manga, {{Satan}} himself becomes one! Oh Miu Sakurai, you lucky little thing, you.
** ''Somewhat'' downplayed in Manga/DemonLoveSpell. Kagura is still a horndog and some of his attitudes can be pretty questionable, especially in regards to erotic dreams but he's nowhere on the league of Sakuya or Hakuron ''and'' his [[KidWithTheLeash girlfriend]] {{Miko}} is more self-aware than Aine or Kurumi.
* Ryoki in ''Manga/HotGimmick'' is a rare example of the BespectacledBastardBoyfriend subtype built off of the TroubledButCute model.
* Several of Shigeta's love interests in ''Manga/HappyMania''.
* Although not an official couple yet, Seo in ''Manga/MonthlyGirlsNozakiKun'' acts like a jerk boyfriend towards Wakamatsu. She harasses him at times, but does care, buys him food, brings him to the cinema, and loves being with him. This inspires [[SequentialArtist Nozaki]] to create a character who's a GenderFlip of her.
* Takumi Ichinose from ''Manga/{{Nana}}'': [[spoiler: Abusive, controlling, jealous, neglectful, possessive unfaithful rapist. Regardless Hachi chooses him over Nobu and marries him, though, in a subversion, it's ''not'' only about her OMG loving him, but quite more because she's pregnant, he ''is'' the father of the child, ''and'' she believes that as a popular and rich singer and businessman, he can provide better for both her and the baby ''and'' because IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy Nobu could be free to pursue his dreams of being a musician which also helps the band Blast succeeding making Nana O. dream come true as well. He's possibly redeemed by ThePowerOfLove as he's afraid that Hachi will one day leave him and admits it to bandmate Ren that if Hachi leaves him, everywhere he goes will be a battlefield and that if he's to go to hell, he'll take everyone else to hell with him as long as Hachi and their children go to heaven. In a flash-forward chapter, he's also seen as a loving father and talking about Hachi to Naomi, how he regrets his actions with Hachi especially during their engagement and marriage & that he hopes that she'll come and live with him after finding Nana O.]] Takumi exhibits this in several ways and switches between Conflicted and Unconflicted:
** Once, he came by to see Hachi at her apartment after summer vacation ended despite her breaking up with him, only to discover that she's pregnant and that she had started a relationship with Nobu; he sabotages her happy relationship with Nobu by hijacking her phone, then giving Nobu a confrontational call about Hachi's pregnancy and that he intends to claim the child regardless of who the actual father is. This is all while he locks Hachi out of her room so she couldn't intervene, making it seem that she was still with Takumi during their relationship[[note]]A lot of this was PoorCommunicationKills from Hachi one-sidedly breaking up with Takumi over the phone to Hachi being so emotionally distraught over how Nobu got the news of her pregnancy and her choice that she couldn't talk or look at him afterwards (Keep in mind that this only occurred because Takumi told Hachi over the phone before she broke up with him that [[KickTheDog getting a girl pregnant was an inconvenience to him]]).[[/note]]
** Another time, he wanted to have sex with Hachi before he left for work, which she didn't want to do because Nana was in the common area and she didn't want to upset her even further. He raped Hachi anyway, saying that she should be thinking about how he "couldn't stand the thought of another man being inside her" and should focus on making it up to him.
** Tried isolating her from Nana O. and the Blast members;
** Cheating on her during their engagement with an actress and later with [[UnLuckyChildhoodFriend Reira]] during their marriage;
** Being a bastard boyfriend of sorts to ''Reira'' as well by stringing her along, keeping her as a mistress[[note]] even if it's to comfort her until her love interest Shin is able to be with her[[/note]] and taking full advantage of her old crush on him. He is slightly nicer to her in this circumstance, given that she ''is'' an old friend and a key part of his work.
** Turns out he had a FreudianExcuse from AbusiveParents - his mother was sickly and his father didn't like having a sickly wife so he became an alcoholic - giving Takumi a DarkandTroubledPast.
* Hijiri from ''Manga/APortraitOfNAndM'' looks like he's going to be one of these (he intimidates Mitsuru, fondles her hair, and tries to blackmail her into dating him), but gets subverted when it is revealed that [[spoiler:he is actually deathly afraid of dogs and wants her to protect him from a rambunctious puppy on his route home.]]
* Shoei Jinnai of ''Manga/DesireClimax''.
* One of the "Love Egoist" {{omake}}s from the ''Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' manga involves a StepfordSmiler high school girl learning that the cute, friendly young male teacher who all her classmates admire is secretly as mean and sarcastic as she was on the inside.
* {{Deconstructed|Trope}} with Shoutaro "Shou" Fuwa from ''Manga/SkipBeat''. He treats his childhood friend Kyouko Mogami like crap since she lives at his house after she falls victim to ParentalAbandonment and is completely devoted to him...but the moment he ''openly'' berates and humiliates her [[WillNotBeAVictim is actually the moment]] she ''[[WomanScorned snaps]]'' on him, realizes how much of an asshole he is, and openly swears {{Revenge}}.
* ''Manga/TheDevilDoesExist'' has Takeru, who blackmails [[ShrinkingViolet Kayano]] into becoming his servant, sabotages her relationship with the guy she likes, and generally emotionally bullies her in the beginning. He seems to think it's only teasing, but considering how shy and emotional Kayano is, it comes off much harsher. Despite the progression in their relationship, he remains cold and distant, which makes her almost perpetually nervous.
* Q-Ta Minamitani from ''Manga/HoneyHunt'' is a ManipulativeBastard towards Yura, is possessive of her, and shows little genuine interest in learning what Yura truly wants.
* ''Manga/WeWereThere'': Yano has a hard time trusting Nanami completely, displaying jealousy and possessiveness, even to the point of physically abusing her.
* ''Manga/DawnOfTheArcana'': Though they're technically married, Caesar starts off as this towards Nakaba, yanking on her braid and forcing kisses on her in the first chapter. Needless to say, once Caesar begins to genuinely fall for Nakaba, he stops doing these childish and insensitive antics for the most part and treats her gently and with respect.
* ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'': Just about all of the main male cast with the exception of Miki. This is, of course, played for epic {{Deconstruction}}, and also in different ways: Saionji commits typical DomesticAbuse and ''very'' much the Conflicted Type, Touga is a ManipulativeBastard version and Unconflicted case, [[spoiler: Ruka]] tries to be the Conflicted Type and mix it with [[spoiler: ThanatosGambit]], and finally [[spoiler: Akio is what happens when a FallenHero completely loses it and becomes the Unconflicted type]].
* Kyota Tsubaki in ''Manga/KyoKoiOHajimemasu'' manipulates girls into falling for him and then dumps them because he can't trust them, humiliates his girlfriend Tsubaki in front of their class, and almost rapes her. He stops doing most of those things after he begins dating Tsubaki and genuinely seems to care for her.
* Kouta from the one-shot manga ''Vitamin'' is like this. He says he loves his girlfriend Sawako and will stick by her, but he forces her into having sex and lies about being with her. Sawako eventually breaks up with him though.
* Ultimately subverted in ''LightNovel/MariaWatchesOverUs''. It looked like Sachiko's arranged fiancè Suguru was heading towards this, but while he tends to be very mean-spirited he nevertheless cares for Sachiko in his own, quiet way, shows gratitude to Yumi for helping his fiancee with her problems, and once even warned Touko of further alienating any prospective friend should she keep up her act pretending to be a jerk. [[spoiler: And he's strongly implied to have feelings for someone else... Yumi's brother Yuuki.]]
* Kumara-ten from ''Manga/{{RG Veda}}'' is a Conflicted type towards his girlfriend Karara. He was the leader and SoleSurvivor of the former beautiful city of Kusumabura; by the time he found and rescued Karara he was so fucked up by his horribly experiences that, despite wanting to rebuild the city so Karara would have a better life, he treated her as few more than a TrophyWife and BabyFactory. [[spoiler: Boy, does he regret it when he loses her...]]
* While Prince Kail from ''Manga/RedRiver1995'' is more of a CrazyJealousGuy, he can come ''dangerously'' close to this when at his worst. There's no doubt that he really loves Yuri but sometimes can be extremely possessive and demanding to the point of once [[spoiler: nearly raping her despite her pleas to stop.]] At least once he has been ''harshly'' called out on it.
* ''Manga/VampireKnight'':[[spoiler: Kaname]] is close to the Conflicted type.
* The ''VisualNovel/SchoolDays'' anime is a vicious {{Deconstruction}} of this trope and the HaremGenre in general, with the Bastard Boyfriend [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome suffering the sort of realistic consequences]] of this behavior that most examples gloss over; he drives away most of his friends with his repulsive behavior, accidentally knocks up one of his girlfriends, and [[spoiler:pushes both of said girlfriends into [[SanitySlippage mental breakdowns]] that end with one murdering him in a fit of rage and the other killing her romantic rival in revenge.]]

'''YaoiGenre examples''':
* Ryuichi Asami in the ''Manga/FinderSeries'' (along with many other Ayano Yamane {{seme}}s): starts off with rape and BDSM, then develops a romantic side. And so Takaba falls in love with him.
* Nakajima in ''Manga/GakuenHeaven'', in the manga volume that follows his route in the VisualNovel (in the first volume that doesn't follow him at all, there's [[spoiler: attempted rape]], and he is tremendously rude to Keita throughout, though he points out that if the central love interest does nothing, he'll take Keita for himself). In the anime, he's toned down to a {{Jerkass}}, and his sexual harassment is elbow-licking.
* Yonekuni (crocodile-boy) in ''Manga/LovePistols'' volumes 1 and 2: [[DoesNotLikeMen hates men]]. Nasty to Shirou. Screws Shirou (repeatedly over a two-year period). [[LaserGuidedAmnesia Doesn't realize it.]] [[GreenEyedEpiphany Jealousy ensues.]] Shirou, of course, is desperately in love with him.
** What's really frustrating about it is that Shirou has [[HeroicSelfDeprecation horribly low self-esteem]] and doesn't think he deserves Yonekuni. In later volumes, it gets to the point where he actually believes that Yonekuni has graciously accepted his feelings and is simply putting up with his presence.
** This trope also applies to Seth. You can't really avoid being attributed with this trope when you knocked your lover out, took him to the ''opposite side of the world into a war zone'', shackled him to the bedpost, and then [[ItMakesSenseInContext demanded a child from him]]. The fact that he did it because he loved him and was [[GreenEyedMonster jealous beyond all reason]] doesn't change anything. It ''does'', however, explain why [[TooDumbToLive it was incredibly stupid and short-sighted of him]].
** From the same series, a Girls Love/Yuri example is in Yonekuni's mother, Makio Madarame (the resident heroic sociopath of this manga). When they first met, she pushed her love interest Karen '''''out of a four-story window''''', and the only reason Karen survived was because of her madararui nature (and she still broke her legs!). Makio ''did'' spend the following months taking her everywhere and caring for her (against Karen's wishes), but still...Even after twenty years together, this trope ''continues'' to apply to Makio, as she constantly causes Karen no end of misery from everything from cheating on her to trying to derail Yonekuni or Kunimasa's psychological development or running her prostitution outfit within the vicinity of their restaurant. These last two coincided at one point where she tried to pimp Kunimasa off to the highest bidder...[[BewareTheNiceOnes and Karen was NOT happy]].
** Yonekuni's brother, Kunimasa Madarame, is really only slightly better than Yonekuni when it comes to ''his'' boyfriend, the main character Norio "Norririn" Enya. Mostly because he's the master of mixed messages to the point where he has Norririn running terrified in fear that he's going to either break up with him or propose to him. Considering that {{Ma|nipulativeBastard}}kio is their mother, both Yonekuni and Kunimasa didn't really have a chance when it came to learning by example of how to maintain a functional relationship.
** Considering that [[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters this is Love Pistols]], you have quite a few dysfunctional relationships running around, but special mention has to go to Hiromasa and Shima's. Originally, they were sex friends in high school and split up when Hiromasa's family moved him to a different prefecture, and then wound up working in the same hospital in their mid-twenties, eventually re-starting the sexual relationship they had before. Despite how much he tries to distance himself, Shima is in love with Hiromasa but believes that if he tried to get any closer to him, he'd lose interest and leave him. In a moment of weakness, he uses a conception device that the Madarui use for same-gender reproduction (his thinking is along the lines of [[SomeoneToRememberHimBy "at least he'd have something of him"]] [[LoveMakesYouDumb when they eventually broke up]]). Consequently, [[MisterSeahorse he gets pregnant]]. Now, ''here's'' the bit where it gets creepy. [[spoiler: It turns out that Hiromasa has actually been in love with Shima for years, and he came back from Kyoto to work in the same hospital as him for the expressed purpose of getting closer to him.]] Okay, that's fine, right? Well, here's the thing...[[spoiler: Hiromasa noticed the fact that Shima seemed to be able to brush their relationship off like it was nothing, and had, for months, without Shima's knowledge, [[{{Yandere}} been using a very powerful conception drug on him in order to get him pregnant so he could tie him to him and stop him from leaving him.]] When Shima finds out that he's pregnant, despite being shocked beyond all belief, he blames himself, and Hiromasa not only ''lets him think that it's all his fault'', but [[IfICantHaveYou threatens to abort the child if it's not his]]. After things have calmed down a bit and Shima's sleeping in his arms, he remarks mildly in an internal monologue how nice it was to have miscalculated the extent of Shima's feelings for him and also how nice it was that ''[[MurderTheHypotenuse he wouldn't have to kill anyone for sleeping with or impregnating him]]''.]] Ladies and gentlemen, your Bastard Boyfriend incarnate.
* Genma in ''Ze'' volumes 3 and 4: possessive, controlling, and completely eaten up with jealousy at the thought that Himi [[spoiler:was his father's lover]]. He wasn't. Relaxes considerably after he finds this out. Himi has been in love with him since childhood and [[LoveMartyr meekly submits]] to rape and imprisonment.
* In the manga of ''Manga/{{Genshiken}}'', Ogiue draws an explicit {{yaoi}} {{doujinshi}} starring her clubmate/crush Sasahara as a ''kichiku'' {{seme}} and clubmate Madarame as his quailing {{uke}}. In the {{anime}}, this gets expanded to an entire sequence: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgWGNKQMtnE Youtube.]] Hilarious, since Sasahara is actually a NiceGuy and a little shy.
* Yuki from ''Manga/{{Gravitation}}'' is a PG Conflicted type example.
* Iason ''and'' Guy from ''LightNovel/AiNoKusabi'', but Iason defines this by putting Riki through hell for 3 years to [[BreakTheHaughty break his pride]] so he may become submissive to Iason.
* Kanou from ''Manga/OkaneGaNai'' is surprisingly a Conflicted type.
* Souma Saiki from ''Manga/SakuraGari'' may be among the most complex examples of a Conflicted Type. He begins via taking Masataka under his wing as a butler/boarding student in his BigFancyHouse, then puts the moves on him, ''then'' rapes him and gets him [[WorkOffTheDebt to pay a certain debt with sex]]... and then not only he has a massive emotional meltdown as [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone all the crap he had pulled on Masataka sinks in]], but then the audience learns about his massive issues and his even worse DarkAndTroubledPast.
* Swordfish from the yaoi manga ''Manga/UnderGrandHotel''.
* Sawatari Atsushi in the yaoi manga ''Manga/{{Interval}}''. Despite his initial cruel and heartless behavior for seemingly no reason, he's actually the Conflicted type.
* Naruse Fuuta in the yaoi manga ''Manga/CuteDevil'' and its sequel is definitely Unconflicted.
* Averted and possibly parodied in ''Manga/{{Kizuna}}'', where {{seme}} Kei has the TallDarkAndHandsome looks and a {{Yakuza}} background that would make him the ''perfect'' Unconflicted type... yet his {{uke}}, Ranmaru, is a violent {{Tsundere}} and can have him ''very'' whipped.
* {{Gender Flip}}ped (as in, {{Yuri|Genre}}) example: Himemiya Yukio from ''Manga/GokujouDrops''. She is definitely a Conflicted type. [[spoiler: She and the main character, Komari, both get better.]] Why is this example here? Because if all the residents of [[BigFancyHouse Haraiso Yakata]] are male, [[GenderFlip the story will be pretty much your standard Boys Love plot]]. (And yes, Loving Force is in full effect.)
* Sou Mizuhashi from ''Manga/AfterSchoolNightmare''.
* Ayace of ''LightNovel/{{Corsair}}'', who has no social grace and unusual ideas about what constitutes consent.
* Klaus von Wolfstadt of ''Manga/MaidenRose'' is a Conflicted type variety: very rough when he sexes up his secret boyfriend [[BrokenMessiah Taki Reizen]], and completely screwed up due to his past and his currently ''very'' difficult position in Taki's land.
* Some suspect Honma of ''Boku No Sexual Harassment'' as being this.
* Gilbert of ''Manga/KazeToKiNoUta'' can be like this to Serge. He's definitely a [[JerkassWoobie conflicted version]].
* Morinaga from ''Manga/TheTyrantFallsInLove'' starts out as a pretty straightforward DoggedNiceGuy with a five-year crush on his homophobic boss, Tatsumi. Then he decides to prove how much he loves Tatsumi by [[RomanticizedAbuse raping him]] while he was drunk and drugged, then blackmailing him into regular sex even though Tatsumi's made it abundantly clear that he's straight, uninterested and not enjoying himself ''at all''. What makes it worse is that Tatsumi's homophobia was occasioned by a NearRapeExperience at the hands of a college professor - which Morinaga knows all about because ''he'' was the one who stepped in. Bastard boyfriend? Bastard boyfriend.

'''Non-{{Shoujo}} or YaoiGenre Examples''':
* Parodied in ''Manga/MajinTanteiNougamiNeuro'', where Neuro is constantly cruel to Yako for no good reason, and this is supposed to hint towards romantic relations between the two characters, as well as being played for laughs.
* Light Yagami from ''Manga/DeathNote'' definitely qualifies; the only reason he enters any sort of relationship with Misa is that she has her own Death Note and is wildly, cultishly in love with him. He really doesn't seem to give a crap about her other than that, and, in fact, is as willing to cruelly use her as a pawn as he is any stranger on the street. The only time he (pretends to) show any affection for her is when she's angry at him, or he wants her to do something. If Misa hadn't started with the infatuation, there's ''no way'' he would have treated her as anything more than a good lieutenant.
** His treatment of his ''other'' girlfriend/lieutenant, Kiyomi Takada. It's more or less canon that they ''have'' had sex at least once, he manipulates her almost as much as he uses Misa as well, and ''unlike'' in Misa's case, [[spoiler:he callously disposes of her by using a piece of the Death Note to force Takada to burn herself to death as a part of his plan. Right after the girl had not only killed Mello for him but was naked and frightened and trapped inside a truck, actually ''begging him to help her'' since she genuinely believes in him. It doesn't matter if you liked her or not, that '''was''' a [[MoralEventHorizon horrifyingly cruel move]] from Light.]]
* Izaya from ''LightNovel/{{Durarara}}'' is an interesting take on the concept: he's not anyone's Bastard Boyfriend -- he's ''everyone'''s bastard boyfriend. Specifically, he insists that he's madly in love with ''humanity'' despite (nay, ''because of'') [[HumansAreFlawed all of its flaws]], and demonstrates this "love" by [[ManipulativeBastard trolling, manipulating, and generally dicking around with just about every person he meets]] [[{{Troll}} to get the reactions from humanity he loves so much]]. He even gets possessive and jealous when he encounters something that might upset the balance of this relationship (like, say, a {{Yandere}} [[EvilWeapon sword]] that ''also'' insists she's in love with all of humanity).
* Played with in ''LightNovel/TheFamiliarOfZero''. Louise's original fiancé Jean-Jacques ''seems'' to be a decent guy, and only shows his bad sides ''after'' Louise dumps him. [[spoiler:He turns out to be a spy for an evil country. He kills Prince Wales and boasts his ambition to TakeOverTheWorld.]]
* DepravedBisexual Head from ''Anime/StarDriver'' is basically a Bastard Boyfriend to everyone he's ever involved with, including ([[AnythingThatMoves but probably not limited to]]) [[StockholmSyndrome Sakana-chan]], [[LongHairedPrettyBoy Shingo]], [[{{Ojou}} Sora]] [[spoiler: (who he ends up impregnating and fathering Takuto with)]] and even a bunch of characters he isn't romantically involved with (although in some cases, it's debatable). Of course, being the ManipulativeBastard he is, most of his relationships were just part of his plans. It doesn't help that pretty much everyone mentioned above becomes a LoveMartyr for him sooner or later.
* Deconstructed twice in ''Manga/BokuraNoHentai''. Both are of the BespectacledBastardBoyfriend variety as well:
** The first is Tamura's lover, a senpai that he fell for in middle school. Due to IncompatibleOrientation, they aren't a couple, but they do have a sexual relationship. In contrast to other OtokonokoGenre love interests, he does ''not'' believe IfItsYouItsOkay-- He's aloof and [[DomesticAbuse abusive]] towards Tamura, only uses him for sex as long as he {{crossdresse|r}}s, says homophobic things about him and shows disgust at what [[PassFail puberty has done to him]]. By high school, he is a scraggly-looking {{hikikomori}} but still has the same {{Jerkass}} personality. [[spoiler:Eventually Tamura becomes fed up with him, calls him out, and leaves him for good.]]
** Tamura himself plays this to Marika (who is a trans girl). Though not her boyfriend, Tamura plays the role; he's portrayed as an overly hormonal boy who tries to coerce her into sex, plays with her emotions, and manipulates her. [[spoiler:Pretty much all of his problems go back to [[RapeAsBackstory sexual abuse]] he received as a child, which explains why he's so overly sexual and troubled.]] In the end, Marika [[spoiler:is implied to end up with the much nicer Satoshi]], while Tamura [[spoiler:doesn't end up with anyone. As an adult he's shown to have a lot of one-night stands and generally seems as miserable as ever]].
* Invoked in ''Manga/{{Horimiya}}''. Hori is something of an AggressiveSubmissive, so she actively encourages [[NiceGuy Miyamura]] to act this way (much to his confusion).
* {{Parodied}} in ''LightNovel/TheTestamentOfSisterNewDevil''. Early into the Master-Servant pact between Basara and Mio, Maria attempts to give Basara advice on how to make himself more likeable to Mio, which boils down to "belittle her and make her unsure of herself so you can control her," which Maria swears she will like. Her proof: an HGame. Despite the obvious idiocy, Basara plays it as a nice guy only to get a bad ending, then has a much better time picking the Bastard Boyfriend responses. He still doesn't take Maria's advice, regardless.

[[folder:Audio Play]]
* The Creator/{{Rejet}} CD series ''DEAR VOCALIST'' features Veronica frontman and lead singer Momochi, who is this trope behind the public eye. Even on a good day, his best behavior towards his girlfriend is berating her and being possessive. Case in point; his ''RIOT'' drama features him breaking his girlfriend's smartphone when he thinks she's cheating on him, and burning her with a cigarette and telling her to leave when she tries to defend his bandmates from being called "third rate" behind him...then ''continues'' to be mad at her [[NeverMyFault when he can't focus in her absence]], giving her a new smartphone on the condition that she never call anyone else but him. There's a lot of PsychologicalProjection on his part because he's way more unstable and poorer in performance when she isn't there for him, yet he tries to make her think she's the same way.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/GreenArrow'': As much as he cares about Black Canary, his actions from his philandering with other women despite how much it hurts her even when they're not a couple or just plain being a brazen fool prone to making terrible choices wreaks havoc on their chance for a happy life. This culminates in Dinah leaving him for good in the aftermath of ''Cry For Justice''.
* ''ComicBook/TheOutsideCircle'': Dennis, the boyfriend of [[TheProtagonist Pete]] and Joey's mother, is a drug addict who sold all of Pete's family's belongings, prseumably for more drug money. When Pete confronts him about it, Dennis slashes him across the face with a knife. Pete's response is to shoot him dead.
* ''ComicBook/PaperinikNewAdventures'': Two pop out in ''[=PK2=]''.
** One is Tyrrel Duckard, a droid from the XXIII century who was in a relationship with Lyla. When he reappears, he's gone crazy because the microcontration stopped time travel and trapped him in a jail where he had infiltrated on a mission. So he escapes and tries to force Lyla to go back to the future using a device ''that would have erased the whole continuity'', and savagely attacks her when she refuses.
*** Tyrrel is this even in the ''Pikappa'' reboot, despite the completely different origins. [[spoiler:Like Lyla, he was built by a genius in the ''XIX Century'' but he went insane and set their mansion on fire, leaving even Lyla (who was trying to save their creator) behind. When he finds her more than a century later, she has lost her memories and he transmits her some fake ones; when she recovers her true memories, she is enraged.]]
** The second is [[OnlyOneName Lucas]], the former boyfriend of Stella Nice. He forces her to hide him in her house while his gang is fighting a war with another gang to gain control of the streets of Duckburg.
* ''ComicBook/SandmanMysteryTheatre'': Ray Kessler is the boyfriend of Dian's cousin, and a despicable human being who neglects her, mistreats her in bed, cheats on her, and finally rapes her when she stands up to him.
* ''ComicBook/ScottPilgrim'':
** Gideon. And Todd.
** Scott may have been more of this than he previously thought, [[spoiler:due to Gideon tampering with his memories. Especially in the case of Kim, when he beat up her current meek Asian boyfriend in order to go out with her back in high school]]. Scott is also like this toward Knives, [[spoiler:with him dating her for very shallow reasons, then becoming emotionally unavailable for her the moment Ramona skates into his life, and then finally cheating on her and dumping her in a pretty dickish way]].
* ''ComicBook/SupermanSecretOrigin'': Subverted, because John Corben wants to ''think'' he's Lois's boyfriend, instead coming across as a StalkerWithACrush. He keeps sending her flowers which she immediately throws out, doesn't understand why she does after re-explaining they only went out ''once'', is contemptuous of her career, and thinks he knows what's best for her, and grabs her when starts ignoring him. Thankfully, Lois (and Clark) refuse to accept any of his behavior.
* ''ComicBook/ZodiacStarforce'': Savi's boyfriend Darren is a total prick who openly fawns over other women while she's right there. [[spoiler: She finally breaks up with him in the second issue and starts dating Lily in the fourth, while Darren settles for Alice Waters.]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
[[MostFanficWritersAreGirls Some fans]] love to turn Canon Characters into this trope, notably:
* Franchise/{{Batman}}: The Joker plays around with this trope in canon and fanworks towards Harley. Most notably the canon MindGameShip he directs towards Batman is fuel enough for some fans who take it further in fanfic for horror and titillation.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'':
** Sasuke Uchiha, whether it's Yaoi or Hetero. Can't be too hard to find.
** Neji Hyuga, especially when paired with [[KissingCousins Hinata]]. This trope gets downplayed when paired with Tenten.
** Madara Uchiha
* William Dunbar from ''WesternAnimation/CodeLyoko''--while not abusive in the show per se--is often written as abusive to Yumi or [[HoYay Ulrich]].
* Seto Kaiba from ''Anime/YuGiOh'': [[http://m31ru-ch4n.deviantart.com/art/TPNM-Cover-141912936 example.]]
** Also, try and find a [[SharingABody Yami Bakura/Ryo Bakura]] fanfic that ''doesn't'' have Yami Bakura mentally or even physically abuse his poor suffering host (and giving him his own body just to make the latter possible). Go on. We'll wait.
*** Challange accepted. [[http://sesshomaruswoman.deviantart.com/art/The-Possessed-Fanfic-Preview-245002178?q=gallery%3Asesshomaruswoman%2F9923519&qo=2 Behold,]] a [[PortmanteauCoupleName Tendershipping]] fic in which Ryo Bakura abuses his Yami!
* Yami Bakura, another ''Anime/YuGiOh'' character, in a good half of his romance fics. Example: ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4280755/1/Tainted-Soul Tainted Soul]]''
* ''Literature/HarryPotter'':
** [[DracoInLeatherPants Draco Malfoy]] in ''Literature/HarryPotter'' fanfic.
** Tom Riddle/Voldemort can be made into this for Harry in some SlashFic.
** Sirius Black seems to get this interpretation as well in some fics.
* [[AntiHero Edmund Pevensie]], from ''Literature/TheChroniclesOfNarnia'', is portrayed as this in some fics, especially the [[BrotherSisterIncest Edmund/Lucy]] ones. Well, it's not that hard to see him that way since he practically [[BigBrotherBully torments and mocks the poor girl]] for pretty much the entire first book. So it's almost {{canon}}...[[{{Squick}} without the romance part, of course.]]
** Although the second book prominently shows that he learned from his mistakes and is Lucy's strongest supporter when she keeps talking about seeing Aslan, the movie version still likes to portray him as [[TheDarkSide dark]] to an extent, due to his [[DeadpanSnarker snarkiness]] and witty character. They even switched his and Caspian's lines from the book, because, while Caspian was supposed to be tempted by evil in the third movie, they gave this role to Edmund and made him look like a jerk again when he fell into temptation for the second time, even though it was for a short period of time. That's why many fans still see him as the [[AntiHero bad one]]. And the bastard boyfriend title is easily used when it comes to Edmund Pevensie.
** It's somewhat canonical too, because, when Edmund fell into temptation for the second time, he actually [[WeCanRuleTogether tried to convince Lucy to join him when he wanted to obtain power]].
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'':
** Craig Tucker is portrayed as this in most fics, particularly the [[HoYay Craig/Tweek]] ones since he is...let's say, [[AntiHero not quite]] [[DeadpanSnarker a pleasant]] [[TheStoic character]]. In most stories, he either acts like a jerkass towards everyone, a bully, a sociopath or he just does anything to obtain what he wants, using methods [[MemeticMolester like rape or molestation]]. Amusingly enough, he completely averts the trope in canon after actually getting into an OfficialCouple with Tweek, instead proving to be supportive, surprisingly gentle, and only having Tweek's best interests at heart.
** Eric Cartman. Almost half of [[PortmanteauCoupleName Kyman]] ([[FoeYayShipping Cartman/Kyle]]) fics portray Cartman as a possessive, obsessed sociopath ([[SarcasmMode not that he's not like that in the real show, too]]) who wants to rape Kyle and torture him in all possible ways. Most of them are M-rated, too.
** Kenny [=McCormick=] also gets this portrayal in 90% of the fics that involve him, due to his infamous status of being addicted to sex and drugs in the show. In most stories, he's an obsessed pervert who molests almost everyone around him or the object of his desires.
* Flippy from ''WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends'', and, good lord, to such an extent that almost the entire fandom sees him not only as an insane serial killer...but also as a serial rapist, due to the thousands of anime-styled drawings in which he [[MemeticMolester either molests or rapes]] {{F|anPreferredCouple}}laky or [[LauncherOfAThousandShips any other character]]. His rape involves sharp tools and blood, as well.
* Derek Venturi from ''Series/LifeWithDerek''. Yes, ''that'' ''[[Creator/DisneyChannel Life]] [[DomCom With]] [[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids Derek]]''. The character is the [[{{Jerkass}} primary]] [[MagnificentBastard bastard]] of the show, but some stories exaggerate his negative traits to the point where he becomes an abusive sociopath who enjoys his [[FanPreferredCouple step-sister/love-interest]]'s suffering. Not that it's that much of a [[VillainProtagonist difference from the canon]].
* Nine times out of ten, the villainous half of [[FoeYayShipping a ship between enemies]] becomes this trope. [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Sephiroth]] is one of the more popular examples, especially in doujinshi, and, oddly enough, is portrayed as either type depending on the fangirl.
* ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'' has LOTS of fanon examples:
** Russia, the resident PsychopathicManchild and {{Yandere}}, is usually portrayed as this in fanworks that pair him up with someone, especially if it's with Lithuania or America (and admittedly, it's not easy to portray him as a decent boyfriend without [[DracoInLeatherPants running into the other extreme]]). As it stands, when Russia is paired with China, it can lead to either this or HappilyMarried.
** England can become this when fans take his [[{{Tsundere}} "tsun"]] side too far or become too enamored with the idea of him as a cocky, swashbuckling pirate claiming his love interest as his "possession" (with his favorite "love victims" being the ukefied Japan or America). And let's not get ''started'' on the Opium War and his fanon treatment of China and Hong Kong, which, more than once, has HK as actually England and China's ChildByRape (either via MisterSeahorse or China having been a SweetPollyOliver all along)...
*** This is also a disturbingly common AlternativeCharacterInterpretation that follows the "[[WhatIf What if England remained an Empire?]]" scenario. Apparently, the only way a Still-Imperial!England can be portrayed as is...a violent and abusive bastard who still dresses like a pirate shoots and beats up whoever dares raise their voice, and sexily abuses a Forever-Colony!America reduced to a whiny, ukefied LoveMartyr mess.
** Turkey is typically portrayed as this in [[FoeYayShipping Turkey/Greece]] and [[UnequalPairing Turkey/Egypt]] fanworks (although it's much less common for the latter). While some Turkey/Greece works veer into BelligerentSexualTension instead by making Greece into a defiant {{Tsundere}} on equal fighting ground with Turkey, many more Turkey/Greece works make it clear that as hard as Greece tries to fight back, Turkey thoroughly dominates him and is free to abuse and even rape him because he either wants to [[IHaveYouNowMyPretty put Greece in his place]] or [[ImAManICantHelpIt just can't control himself around Greece]], leaving Greece a [[BreakTheCutie broken and embittered man]] who [[StockholmSyndrome nonetheless can't help but]] [[LoveMartyr keep coming back to Turkey]]. Some fics have him go as far as raping Greece [[{{Ephebophile}} as a teen]] or [[PaedoHunt a child]], brainwashing Greece into being his slave, or even raping Greece ''explicitly'' [[AttentionWhore because he'd rather have Greece hate him than be indifferent towards him.]]
*** He also comes off as this in Turkey/Hungary fanworks set in the "Ottoman Hungary" times, i.e. in several online places, there's quite the speculation about the possibility of the "young!Prussia finds an injured young!Hungary all battered and half-naked after fighting the Ottoman Empire" strip being the aftermath to Turkey [[UnsettlingGenderReveal realizing that she's a girl]], [[SheIsAllGrownUp acknowledging how she's growing into a beautiful woman]]...and either tearing her clothes and ''raping'' her on the spot to [[StayInTheKitchen "show her what's her place in the Ottoman Empire"]], or [[ScarpiaUltimatum trying to forcibly get her]] [[SexSlave into his never-heard-of-before-in-canon harem]] (if she wasn't already there and was defeated while trying to run away, that is). If the fanworks are set ''after'' that time, however, it goes much more by the BelligerentSexualTension way, with an OlderAndWiser Hungary [[ActionGirl having the physical strength]] to keep Turkey's [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold lechery and/or jerkiness]] at bay.
*** Turkey/Japan fanworks are mostly free of this or at least don't have Turkey abusing or raping Japan. Even fanworks where Turkey's feelings for Japan are clearly one-sided portray him as a jealous but ultimately harmless HopelessSuitor at the very worst. Maybe because Turkey and Japan have always had a cordial history with each other.
*** Rather oddly averted with most Turkey/Iceland fanworks, ''even'' those in which Iceland is smacked with {{Ukefication}}. There are however a few with Ottoman Turkey kidnapping little/pre-teen!Iceland and putting him [[SexSlave in his harem]], "basing it off" the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_Abductions Turkish Abductions]] in Icelandic history.
*** In a kinda infamous Turkey/Ukraine doujinshii, Ottoman Turkey captures Cossack Ukraine (apparently representing the struggles between the Crimean Khanate and the Zaporoszhian Cossacks) after a battle. He then has her [[ShamefulStrip stripped naked]] and [[SexSlave delivered to his room]], where he rapes her and [[NotIfTheyEnjoyedItRationalization she ends up loving it]]. We're supposed to find it romantic.
** Poor Japan. Not only is he turned into a Bastard Boyfriend in numerous Japan/[insert any other Asian nation here] fanworks (which includes many Japan/China fanworks, pretty much all Japan/either Korea, Hong Kong, and/or Thailand fanworks, and even the few Japan/Taiwan fanworks that don't go the LadyAndKnight or HappilyMarried routes) thanks to his LawfulEvil [[UsefulNotes/ImperialJapan imperial history]], but he himself becomes the [[{{Ukefication}} weepy]] [[LoveMartyr victim]]...er, "lucky lover" of a Bastard Boyfriend in numerous America/Japan and England/Japan fanworks. The only pairing exceptions ([[TemptingFate so far]]) are Greece/Japan (whose reputation as the "[[HappilyMarried peaceful, content]], [[KindheartedCatLover cat-loving]] pairing you steer clear of if you love angst" is too strong) and minor pairings like Turkey/Japan and Netherlands/Japan (who don't get that many fanworks in the first place, at least in the English-speaking fandom).
** China (as either [[ImperialChina the Chinese Empire]] or [[RedChina Mao's China]]) sometimes goes from the LoveMartyr victim to the Bastard Boyfriend {{Yandere}} in China/Taiwan or China/Hong Kong fanworks, flanderising the country's "interest" into having them back (HK), or portraying the reason why they left him (Taiwan) as him stalking, abusing, raping, or even forcibly getting them hooked onto opium. Thankfully, it's not exactly common.
*** He's not even safe in China/England fanwork. There's a Pixiv fanartist who has this as a kink, making ImperialChina a Bastard Boyfriend who forces a ukefied England to dress up in imperial lady robes and go through [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_binding footbinding]]. [[http://i54.tinypic.com/4h3v9i.jpg Even if the art style itself is not bad]]...
*** Even worse are the China/Japan fanworks that make ImperialChina a [[PaedoHunt pedophiliac]] {{Yandere}} who [[AbusiveParents physically, sexually, and psychologically abuses]] a completely ukefied Japan ever since he "discovered" him. (Or the fact that you can swap China and Japan's name in that sentence and replace "pedophiliac" with "sociopathic" and "discovered" with "conquered" [never mind that Japan never actually conquered China in real life, not even during WWII, and that China is actually the stronger nation nowadays] for a summary of at least 60% of Japan/China fanworks.)
** America gets this rep in more than one America/England and/or America/Japan badfic, with either England or Japan becoming the LoveMartyr to America's {{Jerkass}} or {{Yandere}} via {{Ukefication}}. Double points if it's a USA/Japan fic set in the American occupation times where America either punishes Japan for his role in UsefulNotes/WorldWarTwo by raping him or becomes a dangerous Yandere who threatens to bomb him again. Triple points if it's a "USUK" fic where the real reason for UsefulNotes/TheAmericanRevolution is either England's reaction to teenager!America [[DoubleStandardRapeMaleOnMale overpowering and raping him]], or America setting a spiteful {{plan}} in which he wants his "freedom" as a direct way to hurt and hate England (and often backed up by a France shown as a slutty, selfish EvilMentor [[RonTheDeathEater who leads America on *purely* to spit on]] [[PuritySue "poor" UK]] - way to flanderize the French role in the Revolution).
** While nowhere as common as Pirate!England, the renditions of Conquistador!Spain also tend to have more than one whiff of this trope. Fortunately, this happens more often than not in regards to the England/Spain or France/Spain pairings, which has a less chance of {{Ukefication}} than, i.e., Spain/kid-or-teen!Romano, Spain/soon-to-be-Empire!Netherlands, or Spain/teen-and-still-Imperial!Belgium.
** Two or three fans give this treatment to Prussia, too. This happens in some Prussia/Hungary (with a [[{{Chickification}} badly chickified]] Hungary, one may add), [[FoeYayShipping Prussia/Austria]] and/or [[BrotherSisterIncest Germancest]] fics, but it's usually a rare sight.
** When the BelligerentSexualTension between [[RedOniBlueOni Denmark and Sweden]] goes too far, the fanworks featuring this couple will make Denmark one of these. It's also a relatively common sight in [[VitriolicBestBuds Denmark/Norway]] fics: one of them had Denmark [[CrazyJealousGuy so deathly jealous]] of Norway's closeness to Iceland, that he has sex with Norway [[ForcedToWatch in front of Iceland]] [[{{Cuckold}} to "teach" Iceland that Norway is his boyfriend]].
** If we go to pure OriginalCharacter Realm, OC!Scotland is often portrayed by Japanese fans as a [[ViolentGlaswegian highly violent]] EvilRedhead who cruelly rapes and abuses a ukefied England.
* There are some fanfics out there that portray either Hibari or Mukuro from ''Manga/Reborn2004'' as a Bastard Boyfriend to Tsuna.
* Yu Kanda from ''Manga/DGrayMan'' sometimes tends to be made into a Bastard Boyfriend for Allen. And let's not even talk about Tyki Mikk...
* Either Roy Mustang or Envy in ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist''. With the latter, it's so common it's almost {{Fanon}} at this point, especially if they're basing the fic on the [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist 2003 anime]] (where he's significantly more powerful, and his MO is basically ForTheEvulz).
* Kaede Rukawa from ''Manga/SlamDunk'' is frequently portrayed as this in fanwork to a ukefied Sakuragi. Yes, '''that''' [[BoisterousBruiser Hanamichi]] [[FieryRedhead Sakuragi]] is made into Rukawa's whiny and weepy uke.
* Parodied in ''WebVideo/GantzAbridged''. Kurono wants to be the Bastard Boyfriend of Kishimoto, but he has, as he puts it, landed in the one anime where being an asshole doesn't get you the girl. She instead has a thing for the DoggedNiceGuy.
* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' fics pairing [[TheIngenue Ventus]] with [[FoeYayShipping Van]][[ScrewYourself itas]] usually turn the latter into this.
* Heero Yuy, back when ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'' was '''the''' yaoi fandom out there, was the poster boy for this trope. Fics where he sexily abused [[{{Ukefication}} Duo]], raped him and claimed to love him, killed or humiliated [[DieForOurShip Relena]] for daring to crush on him (which, of course, was ''[[DesignatedHero okay]]'', because she ''totally'' was a [[RonTheDeathEater pink-dressed]], [[RealWomenDontWearDresses girly]], [[{{Yandere}} Yandere whore]]) and committed other {{squick}}tastic deeds "because he loooooooved Duo so much" (like ''considering to keep Duo in a cage for his own sake'') were pretty much the hottest thing in those years, and fangirls ''loved'' such stuff.
* Ulquiorra Cifer in ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' is transformed into this in {{fanon}}, particularly in some Ulquiorra/Orihime fics. This is usually featured along with DieForOurShip, most likely towards Orihime for not expressing romantic feelings towards him in canon. [[FlameWar And let's just leave it at that.]] It's also a popular interpretation of either Nnoitra or Aizen in any shippy stuff involving them, really not helped by ''both'' being infamous {{Memetic Molester}}s.
** Aizen, Grimmjow, Dark Ichigo, and Ulquiorra can become this towards Ichigo in fanfic sometimes.
* ''Series/{{Hannibal}}'' can be made into this for Will Graham. Not that it doesn't show up in the tv series too with all the manipulative twisted HoYay Hannibal directs toward Will.
* Ferid of ''Manga/SeraphOfTheEnd'' gets great enjoyment out of screwing with people's emotions and lives in canon and enjoys biting ones he finds attractive (which gives both the biter and the one being bitten immoral pleasure) which he does to [[DepravedBisexual both girls and boys]]. This carries over to fanfiction with Ferid's actions being written to include rape into the mix, particularly towards Mika, Yuu, and Krul whom he already demonstrates a particular interest in for their looks and dicking around with their emotions for kicks. In canon, if he was actually in a relationship with anyone he would definitely be an Unconflicted BastardBoyfriend.
* Hans/Elsa ''WesternAnimation/Frozen2013'' fanworks do this often whenever they're not [[DracoInLeatherPants sympathizing]] with Hans' character. It's a huge FanPreferredCouple, up there with [[IncestYayShipping Anna/Elsa]] and [[CrossoverShip Jack/Elsa]]. In contrast, Hans/Anna is rather uncommon and Hans is usually unsympathetically an abusive jerk in Hanna fanworks (they're usually about if Hans did succeed and have him showing his true colors after he marries Anna). Fans like the FoeYayShipping potential between Hans and Elsa so their relationship is often written as turbulent. This FanVid, ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1DqXnT-hIY Hans & Elsa - Hospital (AU:Broken Relationship)]]'', for example, has Hans constantly beating his wife out of jealousy, raping her, and flirting with other women. Despite this Elsa still loves him, we're supposed to feel bad when [[spoiler:Hans dies]], and the video isn't anti-Helsa.
* In Creator/AAPessimal's ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'' fic ''Fanfic/WhyAndWere'', new Assassin graduate Ruth N'Kweze falls for a Bastard Boyfriend who is ''also'' a [[OurWerebeastsAreDifferent wereleopard]]. By the end of the story, she is very briefly married to him. The "very briefly" part is explained by her becoming a widow, having remembered she is first and foremost an Assassin. They don't call it "BlackWidow House" [[MeaningfulName for nothing]].
* At least half of all ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'' and ''Series/GameOfThrones'' fanfics that pair anyone with resident PsychopathicManchild Ramsay Snow portray him in this light. Doubles as a ''[[BastardBastard literal]]'' BastardBoyfriend. Part of this is due to AdaptationalAttractiveness, as he's described as ugly in the books, but in the series played by the drop-dead gorgeous Iwan Rheon. The most common victim is his canonical prisoner, torture & StockholmSyndrome victim, and NoYay partner [[spoiler:Theon Greyjoy]]. Other common victims include his wife in the books [[spoiler:Jeyne Poole]], [[CompositeCharacter his wife in the show]] [[spoiler:Sansa Stark]], and his GoodCounterpart [[HeroicBastard Jon Snow]].
** For those who prefer their sadists more aged and refined, Ramsay's father, [[SoftSpokenSadist Roose Bolton]], occasionally gets portrayed the same way. He's most frequently paired with his wife Walda Frey, or with the king he's second-in-command to [[spoiler:([[TheStarscream who he later murders]])]] Robb Stark. And of course, that's not mentioning the fics where [[ParentalIncest Roose is a]] BastardBoyfriend [[ParentalIncest to Ramsay...]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama'':
** ''Fanfic/ATDALoveTriangleWithBettyCodyAndGwenny'': Geoff becomes a total {{Jerkass}} who mistreats and insults Bridgette on a regular basis. Even worse, despite breaking up, they're forced by contract to still be presented as a couple in the Aftermath episodes so Bridgette is stuck with him until the show's end.
** ''Fanfic/TotalDramaDomination''
*** Sky's ex Keith, who is one of the interns, is this to both her and especially Dave.
*** Devin. After Carrie breaks up with him, he tries to stay nice to her, but after being snubbed by her, he drops the nice guy and becomes one of the biggest jerks on the show. He eventually stops.
** ''Fanfic/UnbreakableRedSilkenThread'': Duncan, who is abusive, controlling, manipulative, and demanding, with just enough intelligence, guile, and charm to pull it off for years. Though it's unclear if he was always as bad as he is in the present, a flashback scene early on between Duncan and Gwen shortly after the end of World Tour shows at least the potential for such a mentality.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film]]
* ''A Woman's Face'': The 1941 version, that is. Creator/ConradVeidt's Torsten Barring is [[ThePornomancer a suave and charming]] bastard and a wannabe murderer, but he's also so hypnotic and attractive Creator/JoanCrawford's embittered heroine actually considers murdering a child for him. When she tries to refuse, he lures her in with erotic gestures dripping with sexual sadism. She ''quivers'' in a mixture of arousal and revulsion.
%%* Asher in ''Film/{{Geek Charming}}''.
* [[spoiler: General Koskov]] is this to Kara Milovy in ''Film/JamesBond'' film ''Film/TheLivingDaylights''. Despite all of his gifts to her, he won't hesitate to [[spoiler: use her as a sniper bait and engineer her death.]]
* ''Film/ChasingAmy'': Holden eventually becomes this through his relationship with Alyssa due to [[spoiler: his insecurities over her promiscuous past. He starts slut-shaming Alyssa for not telling him about her past and making everything all about him regarding this.]]
* ''Film/TheArcher'': Daniel is physically abusive to his girlfriend Emily, but she still defends him and stays with him. She even refuses to testify against him to help Lauren after she beat him up in self-defense.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* See ''Literature/TheCompleteWritersGuideToHeroesAndHeroines'' for sort-of Western equivalents, under The Bastard and The Sadist, although those are usually played as villains.
* The sheik from ''Literature/TheSheik'': causing an entire generation of girls to swoon at the thought of being kidnapped and raped by a hot Arabian prince. That Fetish Fuel was the intention is made transparent by the book's final pages, in which, [[spoiler:in a fit of conscience, he decides to send her away so he won't hurt her anymore, and the heroine threatens to kill herself]]. The fact that TheFilmOfTheBook starred [[MrFanservice Rudolph Valentino]] helped.
* The ''Literature/WickedLovely'' series has Irial, who is incredibly emotionally abusive to Leslie but is still hot. One reviewer describes their connection as 'Destructive yet seductive'.
** Don't forget his relationship with Niall in the past, after the whole ultimatum.
** Part of the dark court's whole nature is based around darkness, seduction, lust, torture, and beautiful destruction. The only important members of the DC who don't fit this trope to an extent are Bananach, who is more a LadyOfWar - her in-universe nickname is Lady War, after all - Ani, who is a PluckyGirl with dreams of chaos that her court disallows, and Niall, who fights every day to resist the darker side of his nature, although the injustices of the past and Keenan's apparent betrayal in Ink Exchange mean that, by Fragile Eternity, when he rules over these creatures, he is rather more inclined to give in to it.
** Irial is something of a subversion; he realizes that Leslie is better off without him, and he has spent centuries trying to make it up to Niall.
* Patch from ''Literature/HushHush'' emotionally manipulated and sexually harassed Nora. It was later revealed that [[spoiler: ''he was trying to kill her'' so he could get his wings back]]. Nora was understandably creeped out but fell for him anyway.
* Chamberlain Yanagisawa of the ''Literature/SanoIchiro'' series is an Unconflicted type after his rise to power, taking out all of the humiliation he suffered to gain said power in the first place on his lovers. This trait is lessened throughout the series as he quickly realizes after his love affair with [[spoiler: Hoshina]] collapses that others are using him to gain power themselves.
* Nagasawa to Hatsumi in ''Literature/NorwegianWood''. She puts up with him throughout most of the book despite his casual cheating and bad treatment of her.
* The knight Erlend exhibits this behavior to the teenage girl Kristin in the trilogy ''Literature/KristinLavransdatter'', set in the Middle Ages. Played straight in the first book, where Kristin falls in love with Erlend, breaks her engagement with her NiceGuy fiance, and defies the will of her father to be with him, all despite his shady past and his none-too-kind treatment of her. Deconstructed in the two later books, set after Erlend and Kristin's marriage, where she has to live with the painful consequences of her decision, all in a highly patriarchal world that offers little support for women.
* ''Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera'': Subverted. In the original book by Gaston Leroux, Erik (the titular phantom) would be a {{deconstruction}}, if not an UnbuiltTrope IF it was a relationship: Erik is TheGrotesque PsychopathicManchild who terrorizes Christine [[AndNowYouMustMarryMe into marrying him]]. In the book, the author wants you to think Erik's an admittedly tragic {{Jerkass}} and Christine is a saint for feeling compassion along with revulsion and fear for Raoul's fate, BUT the MisaimedFandom (and [[LostInImitation many adaptations]]) want you to think Erik's totally hot and the relationship is [[CorruptTheCutie deliciously kinky]].
* Although it is somewhat cleaned up in the movie, the woman in ''The Sheltering Sky'' was repeatedly raped by two of her Arab captors. Her subsequent behavior was more like shell shock than the movies kind of "once you go whatever ..."
* ''{{Literature/Gor}}''. A Gorean master will be one of these toward any slavegirl he cares for. If he isn't one of these at the start, (or falls into the conflicted version of this trope) it will be a subplot that he becomes an example of the unconflicted version at the end, either in general or toward a particular woman whom he'll end up enslaving.
* In ''Literature/VampireAcademy'', Christian seems like he will be this, but he softens. He at first taunts Lissa about her troubles, criticizes Lissa for her treatment of Mia Rinaldi, reveals the secret bastard side of her beloved brother Andre, and accuses her of enslaving the people she compels. He does not mean to harm her, however.
* Christian Grey from ''Literature/FiftyShadesOfGrey'' may as well be the poster boy of this trope. He frequently comes off as condescending, domineering, predatory, or an outright {{Jerkass}} towards Ana. He stalks her (both of them actually use the word "stalking" to describe his behavior), emotionally manipulates her, and is controlling of her to the point where he ''buys the company where she works'' after he sees her boss has the hots for her. He gets [[CrazyJealousGuy insanely jealous]] of ''any'' man who pays attention to her. On multiple occasions, he threatens to beat her, gag her, tie her up, or all three if she does something he doesn't like and she admits to feeling intimidated by him. Many readers have pointed out that Christian's behavior can come across as textbook emotional/verbal abuse, and there are at least a few instances where Ana's consent to BDSM practices is [[QuestionableConsent debatable]]. This is generally presented as being [[RomanticizedAbuse incredibly erotic]] and part of Christian's SexGod Dom persona, or is explained as a being [[FreudianExcuse a product]] of his DarkAndTroubledPast which Ana believes she can [[ICanChangeMyBeloved fix]] by unconditionally loving him.

* On ''Series/AlloAllo'', Private Helga Geerhart is seen standing in a corner like a small child receiving a "time out." Quoth her fiancé Herr Flick:
-->"Let this be a lesson to you. That is the last time you burn my toast!"
* As much as it was shown to be an abusive relationship, ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'''s relationship with Spike had definite elements of this. Spike's frequent [[ShirtlessScene semi-nude scenes]] certainly weren't there to cause disgust in the audience.
** In "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E9NeverLeaveMe Never Leave Me]]", Spike suggests that Buffy deliberately seeks out such men. "We both know it's not love. You like men who hurt you. You need the pain we cause you. [[ThePowerOfHate You need the hate.]] You need it to do your job, to be the Slayer."
* Parodied in ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' in one of the "Gap Girls" sketches. Everyone is asking Creator/DavidSpade's character if she's still dating "That A-Hole Paul." Among Paul's list of crimes includes the fact that he owes her $6000, and when she reminded him he punched her in the neck. Four days later, Spade's character mentions breaking up with him after finding out he was seeing another girl.
* In the ''Series/BlackMirror'' episode ''"USS Callister"'', Robert Daly's character "Captain Daly", [[HerCodenameWasMarySue as scripted by Robert Daly himself]], engages in abusive behavior that only adds to his great charisma and gives this wholesome captain a much-needed bad-boy streak (the rest of the staff tends to see the Captain Daly character in the quite [[UnsexySadist opposite light]]).
* ''Series/TheVampireDiaries'': While Damon often has consensual sex, he's also shown mind-whammying girls (especially Caroline) into it, drinking their blood, and then making them forget it. Including a group of college girls, in a scene meant to highlight his own angst. In the second season, he starts "dating" Andie, heavily and repeatedly compelling her and feeding on her. One time she goes off-script when he's in a bad mood he attacks and threatens her, so even if you ignore all the supernatural aspects, he commits DomesticAbuse. [[DoubleStandardRapeSciFi No one appears to care about all this in the slightest.]] And when she dies, the show has the audacity to play it as a source of angst for him, despite her obviously being every bit as much his own victim as [[spoiler: Stefan's]]. This guy is one-third of the show's main love triangle.

[[folder:Music]]
* The lyrics of the song "El duelo" by Chilean group ''La Ley'' seem to be written from the POV of a Bastard Boyfriend.
* "Under My Thumb" by Music/TheRollingStones comes off as a celebration of this, highlighted in its use in ''Film/ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld''.
* "Bad Enough For You" by Music/AllTimeLow fits this stereotype (on the surface at least) so exactly that it could be used as the title trope. However, it's also an inversion as the narrator states that he'd rather be a nice guy and treat his love interest well but knows the only way she'll fall for him is if he is bad enough for her.
* Judas by Music/LadyGaga could be interpreted as this and coming from the love interest's POV.
* Romantic Cheapskate V2.0 by Music/MCFrontalot is about a guy who delights in stringing a girl along with a minimal amount of commitment on his part. This character is particularly proud of the fact he has never spent any money on his girlfriend, instead resorting to petty theft for gifts, or sticking his girlfriend with the bill.[[labelnote:*]] The original song Romantic Cheapstake was about how, on each of the six previous occasions that Front submitted a song to online song contest Song Fight, he had won handily, with comparing the Song Fight contest to a mistreated girlfriend. This song also won handily, and Frontalot declared that having gone 7-for-7, he was not going to participate anymore.[[/labelnote]]
* "The One I Love" by Music/{{REM}} displays shades of this, referring to the one the singer loves as merely being a "prop to occupy [his] time" and the implication by the slight variation of lyrics in the last verse being that he moves from girl to girl easily and with little care for how he treats each one.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3uPusViJ-Y&t=145s This]] ''VideoGame/YandereSimulator'' animatic/music video, set to the Kikuo {{Music/Vocaloid}} song "You're a Useless Child", portrays Nemesis-kun as an abusive boyfriend to Ayano/Yandere-chan who constantly tells her that she's worthless, stupid and that no one will ever care about her except him, but he'll love and protect her forever.
* Music/{{Eminem}} often portrays Slim as one in later career songs imagining him as a romantic lead, particularly on ''Recovery''. A few obvious examples are "So Bad", "Seduction" and "Won't Back Down", all of which present him as an abusive boyfriend to [[AllegoricalCharacter the rap game or to his audience]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* Eldoth to Skie in ''VideoGame/BaldursGate''. He's a blatantly sleazy, chauvinistic {{Jerkass}} who embodies the selfish nature of his NeutralEvil alignment. The only reason he elopes with Skie is so that he can blackmail her father by claiming he kidnapped her. He is only able to get away with this because Skie is just that naive and foolish and thinks he is romantic.
* Peter, a minor character in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'' that's only with you for a short part of a level, shows himself to be this. He seems to be a bit of a sociopath, and breaks the number one rule of surviving in a zombie apocalypse: ''stay together''. He runs out into the street (away from the ''gun store'' that he and the other survivors (including Leon and Helena) had found shelter in) after ''stealing his girlfriend's gun'' and unsurprisingly gets killed by a zombie. Helena at least calls him out on repeatedly insisting the group abandon his girlfriend, though she's still upset when he dies.
* In ''VideoGame/YandereSimulator'', it's implied that [[PatientChildhoodLoveInterest Osana Najimi]] just ended [[DestructiveRomance a relationship]] with one of these. He's angry about it, as [[DisproportionateRetribution he threatens to hurt Senpai (possibly also her) if she won't come back to him]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* The love/hate routes of the otome game ''VisualNovel/UnderTheMoon'' plays off this trope. The love interests begin the game on the fence about how to treat the heroine. The player's choices push them in one of two directions: towards "pure love" routes or "love/hate" routes. "Pure love" is ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin. In "love/hate", on the other hand, the guys give in to [[RomanticizedAbuse "romantic" abuse]] inclinations that generally include rape.
* Nakajima in ''VisualNovel/GakuenHeaven'', in his route.
* Out of Aoba's love interests in ''VisualNovel/DramaticalMurder'', Mink fits in perfectly. His introduction features him kidnapping the protagonist Aoba to be ''gang-raped in front of him'' (something that's just barely averted by Aoba's SuperpoweredEvilSide showing up) and his actual route involves him treating [[{{Ukefication}} a ukefied Aoba]] like dirt and coercing him into doing various things he doesn't want to do including, yes, rape. [[spoiler: It turns out he's a Conflicted Type with a MASSIVE FreudianExcuse, and in the sequel ''Re:Connect'' he shows remorse for having treated Aoba the way he did.]]
* ''Naked Butler'' takes [[ExaggeratedTrope this trope to extremes]]. In a nutshell, the game revels in this trope so much that it goes so far as to invert VideoGameCrueltyPunishment by punishing the player with a Bad End if they have Tomoaki act ''too nice'' to his love interests. Yes, in order to get the "Good/True Ends" in this game, you have to have Tomoaki [[CrueltyIsTheOnlyOption act like a complete asshole and inflict truly horrible abuse on his preferred butler]] until said butler essentially becomes a StockholmSyndrome-induced LoveMartyr to him. Oh, and it's implied that the bastard has a SplitPersonality.
* ''VisualNovel/{{Nameless}}'' has Lance begin to show some shades of this, if his route is pursued. He begins to tease Eri in a way that is different from [[ChivalrousPervert Yuri's]] and flat out insults her, though it's presented as part of his [[DefrostingIceQueen Defrosting Ice Prince]] routine.
* Majima Tarou, a bonus character for ''VisualNovel/TokimekiMemorialGirlsSide''. Basically everything he does involves being a narcissistic, self-absorbed, emotionally flip-floppy Jerkass who torments the protagonist, demands that she do ridiculous things for her, yells at her when he does, and all-around acts abusive to the poor Love Martyr protag who spends a lot of the time in tears.
* Shiki from ''VisualNovel/TogainuNoChi'' is the Unconflicted type.
* Damien has at least significant shades of the conflicted version in ''VisualNovel/MagicalDiary'', considering that he jerks you around for most of the year, culminating in breaking your heart [[spoiler:and trying to kill you by way of stealing your soul]]. The ''only'' way to get any of his endings - not even just the good one - is to tell him that you love him no matter what and then forgive him for what he did when he shows up again. Your roomies, however, ''will'' call you out on being a LoveMartyr if they find out that you've taken him back, though. [[spoiler:And by using Spirit Echoes and Empathy, you can find out that he has genuinely fallen in love with you and really does want to reform. But if you haven't been working on White magic, you might be left wondering how long it will be before he turns on you again.]]
** It's not quite that simple - you can get his endings even if you play yourself as conflicted rather than all-forgiving. It's just the "I hate you forever" options you can't pick. [[spoiler: And even with the white magic, it's questionable how much he's really changed. He doesn't want to kill you anymore, but he still enjoys messing with your head...]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* Although the story's only two chapters in, and there seems to be more to be revealed where he's concerned, [[NameOfCain Cain]] of the ''Webcomic/{{Starfighter}}'' webcomic plays this one straight from the get-go. His idea of an icebreaker with his new navigator/roomie Abel is to bite Abel's lip so hard that he leaves a permanent scar, announce that Abel is now his bitch, and alternately threaten and sexually harass him (sometimes both at once). Give Abel his due, though, despite his occasional emotional moments, he's a lot more assertive about not taking Cain's shit than most of the {{Love Martyr}}s listed here.
** "The one with the scar... Don't look at him, don't touch him... And don't fucking talk to him!" [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Self Explanatory]].
* ''Webcomic/TheNightBelongsToUs'': It's [[http://tnbtu.com/comic/08-02/ implied that Mick is abusive to Sienna]], at least when he's drunk. Then again, unlike the typical Bastard Boyfriend, he doesn't really revel in bastard behavior, and [[AssholeVictim Sienna can be]] [[http://tnbtu.com/comic/05-11/ just as much of a jerk.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* WebVideo/AskThatGuyWithTheGlasses' sexual sadism towards [[DepravedBisexual everyone]] he meets is very often played for {{fanservice}}.
* Creator/{{Nigahiga}} parodies this with his "Nice Guys" video, and he [[SelfDeprecation self-identifies]] (exaggeratedly) as one in "The Worst Boyfriend Ever".

* Abuses him back: BelligerentSexualTension

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
** Tried isolating her from Nana O. and the Blast members;
** Cheating on her during their engagement with an actress and later with [[UnLuckyChildhoodFriend Reira]] during their marriage;
* Shoei Jinnai of ''Manga/DesireClimax''.

* Sou Mizuhashi from ''Manga/AfterSchoolNightmare''.

* ''ComicBook/PaperinikNewAdventures'': Two pop out in ''[=PK2=]''.
* ''ComicBook/ScottPilgrim'':
** Gideon.

* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'':
* Seto Kaiba from ''Anime/YuGiOh'': [[http://m31ru-ch4n.deviantart.com/art/TPNM-Cover-141912936 example.]]
* ''Literature/HarryPotter'':
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'':
* ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama'':

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]

[[/folder]]
