** Um, no. More worthy was the performance of DenzelWashington as MalcolmX. This is widely touted as one of the 90's greatest performances, right up there with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. Of course, a movie about a Black militant who literally thumbed his nose at the establishment (directed by a guy known for doing the same)....yeah, it would've taken real balls for the Academy to honor that performance.

** Pedro Martinez not even being considered for MVP in 2000 is even more mindboggling. Inning for inning, he put together arguably the most dominant pitching performance in history, especially in the context of being in the middle of the biggest year for offense in the middle of the steroid era. His ERA was nearly two full runs better than that of the AL runner up, and his WHIP (walks + hits per inning pitched) was lower than any in the dead ball era.

* The 2006 AL MVP award definitely qualified. It looked like a classic Yankees-Red Sox slugfest. David Ortiz of the Red Sox hit a staggering 54 home runs, 10 more than anyone else in the AL, and also led the league in RBIs and walks. Derek Jeter of the Yankees hit .343 to lead the league, stole 34 bases, and practically carried the Yankees into the postseason on his shoulders. And in the end, the MVP goes to...Justin Morneau of the Twins, who was almost unarguably the third best player on his own team. (Joe Mauer had a higher OPS while playing catcher compared to Morneau, who plays the traditionally hitting-heavy first base, and Johan Santana had a sub-1 WHIP and 245 strikeouts.) The Twins also had elite closer Joe Nathan and rookie phenom Francisco Liriano, both of whom probably had as much to do with their making the playoffs as Morneau did.

In terms of the Television side, much like The Emmys, there has been a lot of questionable snubs.
* Sarah Michelle Gellar's lone nomination in the Best Actress category for BuffyTheVampireSlayer came in 2000. The one year that really did not warrant inclusion. Made worse when Jennifer Garner would win the award in 2001 for her role on Alias. The show never received a nomination for Best Drama Series in its run.
* TheSimpsons has never gotten a nomination for Best Comedy, most likely due to the stigma of being animated.
