* HonorBeforeReason: This is one part of why Anis' {{Magitek}} faces opposition amongst the nobility. Despite all the utility it provides, to both noble and commoner alike, many nobles are often too hung up on the kingdom's traditions in regards to their relationships with spirits, which they feel that Anis is defiling with her research, to truly accept it. This, combined with [[UpperClassTwit their classism making them balk at the idea of commoners having access to the same power that only they had for the longest time in any capacity]], means that Anis isn't very popular in court even without her lack of innate magical ability in the equation. [[spoiler: This presents issues when Algard attempts a coup and is banished, as that leaves Anis as the only legitimate heir to the throne, something many nobles take issue with due to their ruler traditionally being a [[StayInTheKitchen King]] [[MuggleBornOfMages capable of wielding magic]], regardless of the lack in practicality in the king or Anis creating a new heir and having them ascend to the throne.]]

* HypocriteHasAPoint: Algard attempts to deflect the criticism his sister throws at him by saying she has no right to tell him how to be a ruler when the main reason he is ''going'' to be one is that Anis gave up on her birth right to be next in-line to the throne to pursue her personal interests. On paper it's a good point, but the fact remains that Algard has, by that point, given Anis plenty of reasons to judge him a terrible ruler, regardless of her own decisions.

crapsak world

* CrapsaccharineWorld: While the story initially looks at the world through Anisphia's idealistic (and fairly sheltered) eyes, it gradually shifts to other points of view, revealing many problems. For example, only the nobility is allowed to study and use magic, meaning they charge commoners a fortune for things like healing spells. The Ministry of Magic has also banned books that might, for example, teach anyone else how to use magic. Finally, while the current king is never shown abusing his power, his interaction with people like Baron Cyan make it clear that he (and more importantly, his successor) could, if he so wanted.

** In a more humorous example, Anisphia's mother is feared by everyone in her family, ''especially'' Anise. The normally energetic and happy-go-lucky princess is reduced to a nervous wreck when confronted by her displeased mother.
