* It might be a weird entry but the Jets' apparent disdain of Shrank and Krupke's racism towards the Sharks. Sure they're rival gangs, sure they're leading violent lives that can only end in tragedy, and sure they do honestly hate the Sharks... but they refuse to let it be about racism. For them, it's something else entirely.

** When Shrank kicks the Sharks out of Doc's, insulting Bernardo in the process, Bernardo stands up to punch him, but Riff and Ice hold him back. Punching a cop definitely would've gotten Bernardo thrown in jail, or worse, so it was genuinely pretty good of Riff and Ice to stop him from losing his temper. In the same scene, Riff gives Shrank a DeathGlare for throwing the Sharks out, and Bernardo doesn't leave until Riff gives him an "it's okay, we'll catch up to you later" nod. Riff genuinely seems to consider Bernardo to be a WorthyOpponent.

* At the very end, as Shrank and Krupke escort Chino to the police car, Shrank can be seen putting his hand on Chino's shoulder in an almost comforting gesture. For someone who's been such a jerk throughout the movie, it's nice to see him showing a bit of compassion for this young man who's not only lost his best friend and fiancee in one day, but has also ruined his life, as his act of revenge will undoubtedly send him to prison for a long time.

* Tony's reaction to Maria's father calling her back inside? Asking Maria introduce them, saying he likes her father already and is sure he'll like him, too. He just sounds so genuinely excited to get to know Maria's family. The racial tension and the Shark/Jet rivalry doesn't even enter his mind while he's with her.

* In the middle of the raucous, almost chaotic Mambo, Tony and Maria first lays eyes on one another, and the world seemingly fades away as the two share a tender, intimate yet innocent Cha-Cha. The fact that neither of them touch during their dance, yet their infatuation for each other is still clearly visible.

* A meta one for the film: Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the movie, was raped as a child, and while filming the NearRapeExperience scene between Anita and the Jets, she had a panic attack and began crying because it triggered the memories. The actors playing the Jets all immediately broke character and comforted her, pointing out to her that the moviegoers were going to hate them for what they were doing.
