Example indentation. Third example for Hand that Rocks the Mabel is rephrasing part of the first example. Repair Dont Respond. Overuse of natter terms like \"alternately\" or \"additionally\" to start examples. Second example for Irrational Treasure relates to a Spoof Aesop. Several examples just expand on previous examples. First example for Little Dipper wasn\'t an Aesop, it was a short gag at the end of the episode. First example of Summerween had nothing to do with the episode\'s plot or resolution. Second example for Carpet Diem was not an Aesop; both siblings did it and it worked out fine for one of them, and with no lasting negative consequences for either.

None of the Manotaurs have a normal sounding name. The intent here seems to be to call out Beardy as being different from names such as Pituitor, but it follows the trend: the manotaurs have names that call to mind manliness, and one symbol of manliness is a huge, thick beard. The simplicity of Beardy\'s name was used as a joke, but while it is hilariously simple and self-evident, it\'s still no Bob.

* AerithAndBob:

Not knowing how to talk to girls is not an Adult Fear. Neither is learning how to stand up to bullies. These are things people are supposed to learn during their developmental teenage years, which is why these examples revolve around Soos, a manchild, and Dipper, a literal child. As for the last example, Adult Fear is about real-world concerns we face as adults. While Stan is an adult, his fear that Dipper and Mabel will be killed by zombies and werewolves and other spooky things in Gravity Falls is too fantastic to qualify.

** Much of the Dipper/Wendy arc counts for people who have anxiety and shyness towards dealing with romance. [[spoiler: The fear of romantic rejection gets [[{{Ship Sinking}} more]] or [[{{Anchored Ship}} less]] thrown in during "Into the Bunker" where Dipper decides it's not worth it to admit his feelings for her, but [[{{Anguished Declaration of Love}} ends up doing it anyway;]] and, while flattered, Wendy turns him down due to the age gap between them.]] Similar anxiety is displayed in "Soos and the Real Girl."
** Considering how [[TheGameComeToLife ridiculous and cartoony]] the plot ends up becoming, the central conflict of the episode "Fight Fighters" is surprisingly mundane and relatable: Dipper is being pressured into fighting somebody much bigger than he is, and while he doesn't want to run away like a wimp, he's also very, very scared of being hurt. There's a few lines suggesting he's afraid of being ''killed''.

** Throughout the first season, it's revealed that Stan [[spoiler: has been attempting (and failing badly) to hide the nature of the town from Dipper and Mabel]] because he recognizes that they're in real danger if they pry too far. The events that happen throughout the show, particularly in the second season, prove him to be very right.

This entry needs a lot of work. Every example is a ZCE, multiple characters are listed under the same bullet point, and a few characters such as Grenda or Pacifica are certainly unconventional, but do not illustrate \"dork\" qualities; Grenda\'s a supremely confident in-your-face personality type while Pacifica is an Alpha Bitch who gradually defrosts.

** In "Blendin's Game", while "fear" may be a strong word in this case, [[spoiler:Soos's deadbeat father]] is portrayed ''very'' realistically. And it's not just Soos who is affected; his Abuelita has to raise him herself and is shown having difficulty helping him understand, and Dipper and Mabel simply have no idea what to do.
-->'''Dipper:''' We promised Soos a happy birthday, but how can we give him that now? This goes beyond anything we know how to fix.
** PlayedForLaughs in "Boss Mabel": looking into the eyes of a gremloblin will force you to experience your worst fear. What does the gremloblin see when it looks into a mirror? [[spoiler:Himself saying [[IAmNotMyFather "You've become your father!]]"]]
** Decidedly ''not'' PlayedForLaughs in "Not What He Seems." [[spoiler:Dipper and Mabel go to child services.]] (Well, they would have [[spoiler:if they hadn't slipped away]].) That's terrifying to kids ''and'' adults.
* AdultsAreUseless:
** Grunkle Stan, particularly in "Tourist Trapped". There are times, however, when he manages to avert it [[spoiler:like when he punches a pterodactyl]]. [[spoiler:Subverted in "Scaryoke" when it turns out he'd been lying about his knowledge of the supernatural to try to keep Dipper and Mabel away from it]].
** Downplayed with Soos, who's usually ready to lend a hand in monster hunts.
** Sheriff Blubs and and Deputy Durland combine this with PoliceAreUseless.
* AdvertisedExtra: When the show first came out, many of the promos featured Norman. [[spoiler:He turned out to be a bunch of gnomes in disguise. They weren't seen again until the first season's finale.]]
* AerithAndBob:
** The gnomes are named Jeff, Carson, Jason, Steve, and Shmebulock.
** The manotaurs names include Testosteuror, Glurk, Pituitor, and Beardy.
* {{Aesop}}: Every episode of the show has at least one, and they're [[ShowDontTell woven relatively subtly into the narratives]] to boot.
** "Tourist Trapped": Do not go into the woods alone with a guy you just met.
*** Also, even when you're stuck in an unfamiliar or undesirable place - such as a decaying Oregonian tourist trap - still try to make the best of your circumstances.
** "The Legend of the Gobblewonker": Spend some time with your elders - they'll appreciate it and you might have more fun that you assume.
** "Headhunters": Don't let others tell you you're not good enough to do something.
** "The Hand that Rocks the Mabel": If you're feeling uncomfortable about where a relationship is going, it's okay to set boundaries and say "no". And the more someone lavishes attention and expensive gifts on you to pressure you into playing a certain role for them, the warier of them you should be.
*** Also, you should be the one to confront the problem instead of someone else, as they could end up as collateral damage.
*** Thirdly, even if someone is incredibly nice to you, you are under no obligation to go out with them if you don't like them like that. And if they don't take "no" for an answer or pressure you into saying "yes" when you don't really want to, they're not actually nice, nor are they actually your friend.
** "The Inconveniencing": Sometimes, what sounds really cool in theory isn't that much fun when you actually try it, particularly when it's just done as an attempt to impress others.
** "Dipper vs. Manliness": Even if nobody backs you up, don't be afraid to do what's right.
*** Alternatively, you are as manly as you think you are and do not be discouraged if others say otherwise. (Alternatively, alternatively: "true" manliness - or girliness - isn't always what society thinks it is, and you shouldn't be afraid to express yourself in a unique way.)
** "Double Dipper": If you like someone and want to ask them out, don't be afraid to just talk to them about it.
*** Alternatively, your real friends will stick by you no matter what happens.
** "Irrational Treasure": Don't dismiss someone's abilities just because you don't think they're important or useful.
*** Alternatively, while there are people who are content enough with self-assurance, [[HonorBeforeReason there are also others who need to get back at those who wronged them]], and either approach is fine.
*** you are are unique the way you are and you shouldn't change any part of that for approval (especially from someone who already hates you) otherwise you will lose what you already have.
** "The Time Traveller's Pig": You can't have everything you want all of the time.
*** Alternatively, taking what you want can end up with you taking what someone else wants just as much. (Works both ways, since Mabel abandoned her chance to help Dipper in order to win Waddles.)
** "Fight Fighters": Face things you don't like or are afraid of with grace rather than trying to run away, but KnowWhenToFoldEm when you surpass your abilities.
** "Little Dipper": Don't destroy something just because you personally don't need it anymore. Also, don't let your insecurities blind you to your accomplishments.
** "Summerween": If someone is threatening you, make sure you tell someone and not just keep it to yourself.
*** Also, it's okay to do childish things, even as you get older.
** "Boss Mabel": Settle for what you have already as opposed to unwisely taking a gamble on it all.
*** Alternatively, sometimes you have to be tough to get something to work, and must be understanding when you're on the receiving end of that toughness
** "Bottomless Pit": Three.
*** ''Voice Over'' - Your personal qualities might not be perfect, but they're yours.
*** ''Soos' Really Great Pinball Story'' - Don't cheat, and don't be selfish.
*** ''Trooth Ache'' - Sometimes, you ''have'' to tell a little white lie to spare the feelings of others.
** "The Deep End": Don't do something without thinking it through. It can lead to doing something needlessly that you will regret.
** "Carpet Diem": Don't make important decisions when angry.
*** Secondly, don't pretend to be someone else and try to hurt their reputation.
*** Thirdly, don't ignore your old friend's feelings just because you made some new ones.
** "Boyz Crazy": Don't arrive late for something and be surprised when they've run out of what you want. Alternatively, you should help someone for the sake of making them happy, not for personal gain.
** "Land Before Swine": Lying about something, then trying to perpetuate the lie even though you or someone else might get hurt, is a bad idea.
*** Alternatively, stay away from hungry, meat-eating animals that are bigger than you. (Bit of a no-brainer.)
** "Dreamscaperers": Don't sabotage your master plan to help your disguise you made to help with said master plan.
*** Alternatively, let people finish speaking before judging what they say.
** "Gideon Rises": Just because you're not the strongest or the smartest doesn't mean you can't be the hero.
*** Secondly, just because something has had no use in the past doesn't mean it won't in the future.
*** Thirdly, if you believe something you are looking for is somewhere on a specific property, check every nook and cranny inside ''before'' you start digging outside.
*** Fourthly, sometimes people, including the police, get to pick and choose who to believe based on their own preferences, and they are jerks for doing it.
** "Scaryoke": Don't let your ambitions blind you to the potential consequences of your actions.
*** Also, remember the important matters like spending time with family.
*** Not telling someone the full truth to protect them could very easily backfire. Best to just be upfront with them about the danger and help them deal with it in a safe, intelligent way rather than risk them stumbling across it on their own and going in completely blind.
** "Into The Bunker": If you like someone and it's eating you up with anxiety, sometimes you have to take a risk and say it, because uncertainity is often worse than certainity.
*** Also, sometimes people need a push, but you still have to respect their choices in the end.
** "The Golf War": Grudges and rivalry will only lead to misery, and the only way to truly end them is to be the bigger person and turn the other cheek.
*** Secondly, don't get involved in other peoples disputes, or let others get involved in yours.
*** Thirdly, playing one side against the other for your own gain isn't only deceitful, it's dangerous.
** "Sock Opera": Don't take for granted the people that care about you for your ambitions. If they're willing to give up everything, you should do the same.
*** Also, don't go blindly chasing after someone until you know them a bit better, since failing to be with them might be dodging a bullet.
*** Thirdly, '''[[DealWithTheDevil DON'T MAKE DEALS WITH DEMONS]]''' or similarly styled energy beings. (A less [[SpaceWhaleAesop space whale-y]] way of putting it might be, "If someone who's only hurt you and been cruel to you in the past starts acting nice and helpful out of nowhere, something ain't right.")
*** Fourthly, no matter how important something is, foregoing sleep is never a good idea; if anything, it'll make things worse.
** "Soos and the Real Girl": Don't be afraid to go out into dating; while dating sims can seem like a good substitute, they fail because they have no depth to them.
*** Envy is never any good and can cause more trouble than its worth.
*** Also, a life of unpredictability (especially regarding relationships) is worth way more than the predictable.
*** Just be yourself; there are billions of fish in the sea, and at least one is bound to like you just the way you are.
** "Little Gift Shop of Horror": BUY SOMETHING FROM THE MYSTERY SHACK IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU.
*** The episode in general parodies this theme with several Family Unfriendly Aesops. However, each segment ''does'' contain a secondary actual aesop as well.
*** ''Hands Off'': The only reason witches curse people or inconvenience them is because they're lonely. Also, don't steal. Just don't.
*** ''Abaconings'': Don't bother using your newfound intelligence to make yourself famous, help make the world a better place, or gain powerful allies like world leaders and scientists. Instead, you should throw all of this away to live a life of ignorance with a little scatterbrained girl who enjoys making fart noises with her keyboard, simply because you consider her your "best friend". Also, pursue science for the sake of discovery, not glory.
*** ''Clay Day'': Stop-motion is not only terrifying, but (due to being created by black magic) is actually unholy. Why do you think [[WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas many]] [[WesternAnimation/{{Coraline}} stop-motion]] [[WesternAnimation/ParaNorman animated]] [[WesternAnimation/TheBoxtrolls films]] revolve around such dark themes? Also, if you may not conquer your fears, face them anyway if your loved ones may get hurt from it.
** "Society Of The Blind Eye": When confronted with uncomfortable, disturbing or even frightening truths, it is better to confront them and learn from the experiences than to forget, otherwise the consequences may hurt you and or others. So true if people watched the credits, as [=McGucket=] starts to remember who wrote the journals.
*** Driving this point home, it's worth pointing out that the members of said Society that have character development beyond "One-off gag" (i.e [[spoiler: the woodpecker marriage guy]]) aren't dealing with their pain, just making themselves forget and experiencing the same hurt over and over again. And it's also shown that this is an incredibly unhealthy way to deal with your emotions. [[spoiler: Toby]] is implied to have joined and used it to deal with his HopelessSuitor tendencies towards [[spoiler: Shandra Jimenez]], and because he's not dealing with them, he experiences the same pain of rejection near constantly and doesn't move on. [[spoiler: Bud Gleeful]] also joined to forget about [[spoiler: his EnfantTerrible son]], and so he's stuck dealing with the same stuff over and over, and [[spoiler: Blind Ivan]] just uses it to erase any guilt he might have over issues like [=McGucket=]'s memories, which has disturbing implications.
** "Blendin's Game": Your family is made up of the people who love and care about you, not necessarily the people you share blood with.
*** Also, if somebody truly doesn't care about you, don't get hung up over them. Even if they're [[spoiler:a parent]], if they don't think you're worth their time, they're not worth yours.
*** Thirdly, even if someone tried to ruin your life for what you did to them, you should forgive them and do something nice for them. It might turn their life in a brand new direction.
** "The Love God": If somebody you know is in a happy relationship that you're not necessarily comfortable with, the best thing to do is take the selfless route and be happy for them.
*** Also, everybody deserves compassion, even people who haven't necessarily shown it to you. Even if somebody's a jerk, they still have feelings, and often showing them kindness is the best way for them to start growing into better people.
**** Also, it's not right to play with peoples lives without their consent, even if you have the best of intentions.
** "Northwest Mansion Noir/Mystery": Just because you come from a family with a long history of being vile individuals doesn't mean you have to follow in their footsteps.
*** Also, don't judge a person by their cover. Chances are, when you get to know them, they're more complex and interesting than you thought they were.
*** And finally always keep a promise and never betray your friends for personal gain because you might loose more than what you wanted.
** "Not What He Seems"
*** Don't assume the worst. Doing so will only cause more unnecessary grief.
*** If you have a secret that needs to be said to your loved ones, say it before it too late.
* AffablyEvil:
** [[spoiler:The ghosts]] from "The Inconveniencing" would be just like any other sweet old couple... [[spoiler:except they entrap and torment any teenager that comes into their store.]]
** [[spoiler:Zombie!Soos, who combines the ruthless killing instinct of the undead with the cheerful personality of... well, Soos. [[ApologeticAttacker "Sorry, dude, but I just really want those brains!"]]]].
** Jeff, the leader of the gnomes, and the only one with a major speaking role. He has a very easy-going and helpful attitude, and would be a perfectly nice guy were it not for the insignificant little fact that he [[spoiler:wants a twelve-year-old to marry him and all his gnome brethren and [[AndNowYouMustMarryMe isn't taking no for an answer]]. He also seems suspiciously inclined to cannibalism]].
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Stan's preferred form is affectionate noogie-ing.
* AffectionateParody: Of bizarre-small-town mystery series like ''TwinPeaks'' and ''NorthernExposure''.
* AgentMulder: Dipper and Soos, the former spurred on by a supernatural compendium. For example, in "Tourist Trapped", Soos says the mailman's a werewolf and believes Dipper's theory about Mabel's boyfriend being a zombie, a theory Dipper came up with after looking though the book.
* AIIsACrapshoot: [[spoiler:Giffany]], although there's probably some other supernatural forces at play.
* AirVentPassageway:
** Dipper uses one to get into the convenience store in "The Inconveniencing".
** The wax head of Larry King used the Mystery Shack's air ducts to make his escape. Apparently, [[spoiler: "He's ''still'' in the vents."]]
* AlienBlood: Used on a few occasions in the second season, first with the zombies in "Scary-oke", and then with the shape shifter in "Into the Bunker". Both bleed green blood, which is likely the only reason why the pretty significant amounts of violence against them were allowed on the Disney Channel in the first place.
* AllMythsAreTrue
* AllThereInTheManual:
** Lots of info on characters, secret codes, screenshots and animated [=GIFs=] of 4 and beyond, as well as information taken from online games and otherwise, were being thrust into the public's hands before most folks could barely watch Episode 2.
** Dipper's book serves an in-series example, seeing as it has information on all the creatures, various spells, and even a clue to a conspiracy.
* AlliterativeName: Gideon Gleeful, Blendin Blandin, and Nathaniel Northwest.
* AllWomenAreLustful: A (probably) non-sexual example, but Mabel and her friends (Mabel in particular) are very, ''very'' obsessed with boys. Exaggerated in the aptly titled "Boyz Crazy", where she starts huffing and puffing like an addict when her "[[ItMakesSenseInContext Pet boy band]]" is being taken away from her.
* ALoadOfBull: The manotaurs.
* AlphaBitch: Pacifica Northwest.
** She does get better in the end of The Golf War, but whether or not she remains that way is yet to be seen.
** LovableAlphaBitch: Season two is steering her character towards this.
* AlwaysIdenticalTwins: Averted by Dipper and Mabel themselves but toyed with [[spoiler:for Stan and his twin brother, The Author. They look very similar physically except his brother has six fingers on each hand. It's unknown if this was always the case or if he attained said extra fingers later in life, messing around with the super natural.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: In "Little Dipper", Mabel vents her frustration that Dipper seems to always beat her at everything.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Mabel decides to talk about Dipper's "Lamby Dance" at the very ''worst'' possible time...
* AmbiguouslyBi:
** Soos starting late in season 1 and carrying through to season 2. While unambiguously attracted to women, he notes how attractive Stan was in his younger days in "Dreamscaperers," states that he wouldn't mind if Stan kissed him in "Scary-oke," and in "The Golf War" he makes note of the stars while staring and lying back with Stan in the car at night.
** Made even more ambiguous when you consider that Soos implied in "Dreamscaperers" that he wishes Stan would [[LikeASonToMe love him like a son]].
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Nate and Tambry, two of Wendy's friends.
** Soos was this for a number of episodes, until "Gideon Rises" finally confirmed he was Hispanic.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Stan, all the frigging time. [[spoiler: It only gets even more ambiguous in "Gideon Rises" where his underground lab is finally shown.]]
** As of season 2, he's [[ZigzaggedTrope zigzagging]] this all over the place. [[spoiler: It's unquestioned that he genuinely cares about the twins, but at the same time, he stole Dipper's journal and has the thing going on behind the vending machine, for which his use of the term "get caught" implies less-than-noble intent.]]
*** [[spoiler: In the end, he was trying to bring his brother back. Not lawful thing to do and it was REALLY risky, but he had good intentions]]
* AmbiguouslyGay: Tyler, the Cute Biker. He shows up out of nowhere [[ItMakesSenseInContext to cheer on Manly Dan beating up a fish]]. He also shows up in the restaurant where Mabel and Gideon go on a date, calling the two adorable. His shorts are... pretty short, and he has visible eyelashes, which otherwise only female characters have. Also, in "Irrational Treasure" he and Manly Dan are briefly seen sharing a plate of meat between themselves. In "Boyz Crazy" he, along with Old Man [=McGucket=], are in the audience at the Sev'ral Timez concert.
** Sheriff Blubs and and Deputy Durland act very much like a married couple most of the time. Blubs' pronunciation of "Durland" sounds suspiciously like "darlin'".
* AmbiguouslyJewish: The Pines family. Mabel and Grunkle Stan occasionally use Yiddish words ("mazel tov", anyone?), and Mabel herself has been known to put "Moses" where others would use "Jesus Christ". Dipper and Stan fit a [[JewishAndNerdy couple]] of [[AllJewsAreCheapskates stereotypes]] respectively. there's also the fact that "Pines" is an eastern Ashkenazi Jewish surname. However, despite Alex Hirsch's Judaic background and the fact that he based the Pines on himself and his family, he has confirmed that the Pines family is [[https://31.media.tumblr.com/3b25ef523ae8d77f7df25993283b9c9c/tumblr_inline_nh0s0ltaTL1qm9usw.png not Jewish]]. This happened after artists would get told by fans that it's offensive of them to draw the twins celebrating Christmas. In another tweet, he proceeded to draw the twins wearing [[http://31.media.tumblr.com/a59913e8450294491fd15bbff911029c/tumblr_myc4cxVJ2B1sbotlno1_400.jpg Santa hats]], himself.
** [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/579343833260957696 Another set of tweets]] clarifies that while Alex personally sees the Pines twins to be like himself and his own sister (ethnically half Jewish and celebrating both Christmas and Hanukkah ), he encourages the fans to imagine/interpret them how they like.
* AmnesiacDissonance: [[spoiler:Old Man [=McGucket=] founded the Society of the Blind Eye]].
* AmusingInjuries: All over the place. [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by Bill [[spoiler: during his time in Dipper's body]].
--> '''Bill:''' Pain is hilarious! ''(Rams arm into a drawer)''
* AnAxeToGrind: [[spoiler: The wax sculptures.]]
** Wendy during "Into the Bunker," [[spoiler: with Dipper taking a turn while Wendy is occupied with Experiment 210.]]
** The Lumberjack Ghost in "Northwest Mansion Noir/Mystery".
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: With the exception of Pacifica and her parents, the ''entire party'' in "Northwest Mansion Noir/Mystery" is turned into wooden sculptures, in what the Lumberjack's Ghost terms a "Forest of Fear"]]
* AndNowYouMustMarryMe: [[spoiler:The gnomes after they kidnap Mabel.]]
* AndThisIsFor
--> '''Mabel:''' "That's for lying to me! That's for breaking my heart! And ''this'' is for messing with my brother!"
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: [[spoiler: Soos is transformed into a zombie in "Scary-oke" after Dipper accidentally awakens the dead. Thankfully, his book came with a cure.]]
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: In "Into the Bunker", Dipper [[spoiler:finally confesses his feelings to Wendy in a fit of grief as he tries to awaken her seemingly-dead body.]] Fortunately, [[spoiler:it wasn't actually her, and she was standing right behind him the whole time.]]
* AnimatedSeries
* AnimationBump: While the show itself looks pretty good, the entire intro is drawn with more detailed shading and fuller animation. More evident are Mabel plugging her sweater into the outlet and Dipper getting scared and dropping his candle.
** Those last two shots were animated by [[TheRenaissanceAgeOfAnimation renaissance]]-era Disney animator James Baxter.
** The sea monster in "Legend of the Gobblewonker" is particularly nice.
** Rumble in "Fight Fighters", due to being animated entirely by [[http://probertson.tumblr.com/ Paul Robertson]].
*** Robertson's sprites get even more complex in "Soos and the Real Girl"; justified in-story, as the dating sim ''Romance Academy 7'' has much more processing power than an arcade game from the 1980's.
** The animation during the climax of "Not What He Seems" is ''gorgeous''.
* {{Animesque}}: Giffany in "Soos and The Real Girl", as she's from a Japanese Dating Simulation game called ''Romance Academy 7''.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Being twins both Mabel and Dipper are sometimes like this toward each other, though they're still the best of friends.
* AntiMutiny: [[spoiler:What the clone Dippers try to do to Dipper in "Double Dipper". When Tyrone realizes that the original plan wasn't working, they laugh it off and share a soda instead.]]
* ApocalypticLog: Dipper reads the page quote in Journal #3 about that the author needing to hide the book away before it trails off.
** In the Season 2 episode "Society of the Blind Eye", [[spoiler: the main cast and Old Man [=McGucket=] find that the Society of the Blind Eye uses a device to remove memories of paranormal activity. They recover Old Man [=McGucket=]'s memories of inventing the device from the Society, and watch them depicting his descent into insanity by repeatedly wiping his own memories.]]
* ArbitrarySkepticism: In "Bottomless Pit!", Grunkle Stan still states that everyone's stories are far-fetched, even though he is falling through a bottomless pit even as he speaks, and even ''lived through'' one of the stories.
** Also present in "The Land Before Swine", when Grunkle Stan refuses to accept magic, but is totally okay with dinosaurs alive in the summer of 2012 specifically because they ''aren't'' magical. Ultimately subverted in the first episode of season two, when Stan declares that he's "not stupid" and was just trying to pretend that none of the supernatural events in the series were happening to keep Dipper away from it all.
* ArcNumber: "6:18" appear in many episodes, [[http://www.avclub.com/articles/alex-hirsch-gravity-falls-showrunner-comedy,85801 as June 18th is the creator's birthday]].
** [[spoiler: "30 years" is starting to get thrown around in Season 2; in "Scary-oke," Stan mentions that it's how long he's been working on the portal beneath the shack, as well as the agents mentioning that they haven't seen readings like the ones given off by said portal in 30 years; in "Into the Bunker," Experiment 210 says that the author of the journals "hasn't been himself for 30 years," and the map of Gravity Falls that Wendy removes to reveal the door to the author's lab is dated circa 1982- 30 years prior to the 2012 when the series seems to take place. In an example from the first season, the calendar hanging in the hidden room in Carpet Diem was also dated 1982. If that wasn't enough, even Old Man McGucket claims that, prior to "Society of the Blind Eye," the earliest he could remember was around 1982--immediately after creating the Society, wiping his memories, and the completion of the portal...]]
** "3" seems to be the primary contender for the show's Arc Number. A projected three-season arc, three journals, three seasons on summer, [[spoiler:three sides and points on a triangle, 30 years is three rounds of ten...]]
* ArcSymbol: A simple drawing of an eyed pyramid with limbs and a top hat is all over the series, from the opening credits to the Mystery Shack's windows. [[spoiler:He turns out to be an extremely powerful demon named Bill Cipher]].
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: The Mystery Shack crew discusses their past encounters with Gideon Gleeful:
--> '''Mabel:''' Remember when I wouldn't date him and he tried to destroy us?\\
'''Stan:''' He's always trying to trick me into losing the Mystery Shack.\\
'''Wendy:''' One time I caught him stealing my moisturizer.
* ArmourPiercingQuestion: Agent Trigger gives this to Dipper causing him to question the events of the episode Not What He Seems.
* ArtShift:
** In "Fight Fighters", the video game is shown pixelated.
** Giffany in "Soos and the Real Girl".
** Mabel's ImagineSpot in "Legend of the Gobblewonker."
*** Funnily enough, in "Dreamscaperers," Bill Cipher causes the cute teenage boys from Mabel's ImagineSpot to appear in Stan's mind, retaining their style while interacting with the normally-drawn environment.
* ArtEvolution: It's subtle, but the animation quality does improve between seasons one and two.
* AsHimself: In "Headhunters", both of the [[spoiler:Coolio and Larry King wax figures are actually voiced by the real Coolio and Larry King.]]
* AsianAndNerdy: Candy Chiu.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Soos 100% of the time and Mabel most of the time. [[spoiler: Actually saves Soos' life in "Skary-oke"]]
-->'''Mabel''' "Don't worry, brother. Whatever happens I'll be right here, supporting you every step of the-- ''oh my gosh a pig''!"
* AuthorAvatar: A few. Alex Hirsch voices a number of characters on the show, and many of them are very, very important. Examples include Stan, and [[spoiler: Bill Cipher.]]
* AutoTune: Utilized at all times by BoyBand Sev'ral Timez in "Boyz Crazy".
* AWizardDidIt: Mabel believes a wizard hiding in the closet is behind Dipper's sudden growth spurt in "Little Dipper".
* AwesomeMcCoolname: Dipper #2 decides on "Tyrone".
** [[spoiler:Fiddleford Hadron [=McGucket=]]]
* AwkwardFatherSonBondingActivity: Grunkle Stan taking Dipper and Mabel fishing.
* AxCrazy:
** [[spoiler:The wax statues]] in "Headhunters".
** Fittingly, [[AllThereInTheManual though she's not named on-screen,]] [[spoiler:Lizzie Borden is among their ranks.]]
** Gideon, who, at one point, tried to [[TongueTrauma cut Dipper's tongue out]] just so he could get a date with his sister.
** Bill Cipher, while his insanity is debatable, is definitely shown to enjoy causing people pain. One of his very first actions upon being summoned was [[TheToothHurts yanking the teeth out of a deer]] just for the heck of it.
* BackToBackBadasses: [[spoiler:Mabel and Pacifica team up this way against the Lilliputtians.]]
* BadassAdorable: Dipper and Mabel.
* BadassBookworm: Dipper is very rational, observant, and is the go-to guy for information about Gravity Falls. He also gradually gets more and more badass as the series goes on, shown off best during [[spoiler:his NoHoldsBarredBeatdown with Gideon in "Gideon Rises".]]
* BadassFamily: All the members of the Pines family shown up to date fit some form of Badass or other.
* BadassGrandpa: Grunkle Stan, shown best so far in "The Land Before Swine" and "Scary-oke."
* BadBoss: Stan.
* BadFuture: [[spoiler: Apparently, in the future, a time baby will destroy everything and take over humanity. On the plus side, humanity gets time travel.]]
* BadGuyBar: The twins use fake [=ID=]s to enter one in "Headhunters."
* TheBadGuyWins: [[spoiler: The end of "Dreamscaperers". Gideon manages to collect Stan's deed to the Mystery Shack and has his father blow the roof off.]]
* BalloonBelly: Mabel gets one after eating too much Smile Dip.
* BareYourMidriff: Wendy wears an ensemble of this type to the Wood Stick Festival in "The Love God".
* TheBarnum: Grunkle Stan.
* {{Bathos}}: The Big Henry scene in "Golf War". It'd be [[TearJerker incredibly sad and jarring]] (and some people found it that way anyway), were it not for the fact that it takes place right under the noses of completely oblivious golfers and involves little people with golf balls for heads.
* BatmanGambit: Done by Mabel in "Tourist Trapped."
* BehindTheBlack: In Dippers Guide to The Unexplained #82, there were several points where people, including Dipper, could have that the man [[spoiler: was a robot that had no right side.]]
* BeneathTheMask: Quite a number of characters.
** Wendy isn't actually as laid-back and cool as she lets on; [[spoiler: underneath, she's almost constantly stressed out]].
** Robbie acts like an apathetic JerkAss to virtually everybody, [[spoiler: but secretly he's very awkward, lonely, and insecure]].
** Pacifica appears to be a quintessential RichBitch, [[spoiler: but she's also a LonelyRichKid who doesn't appear to be loved by anyone, not even her own parents.]]
** Even our own [[spoiler:Dipper]] is a mild case; in "Society of the Blind Eye" he revealed that he's [[spoiler:playing up the cooler and smarter parts of his personality on purpose in order to hide crippling pre-pubescent insecurity.]]
* BenevolentBoss: Mabel starts out as one when she takes over for Stan in "Boss Mabel". It doesn't last.
* BerserkButton: Do NOT call Dipper a wimp, or a baby, or not a man, or kid. Point is, he hates being a wimpy 12 year old and hates it even more if you comment on it.
* TheBet: Stan and Mabel make a bet on who could make more money: Mabel while running the Mystery Shack, or Stan while on vacation.
* [[spoiler: BetterAsFriends: After Dipper's confession to Wendy, she confesses to having suspected it and while very flattered, she pretty much says this.]]
* BetterThanABareBulb
* BewareTheHonestOnes: Stan in "Bottomless Pit".
** BrutalHonesty
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Dipper and Mabel.
* BewareTheSillyOnes:
** Old Man [=McGucket=] has proven himself capable of quite a bit of destruction.
** Mabel, despite being a total CloudCuckooLander, has been shown to be perfectly competent both in physical combat and helping solve mysteries with her brother.
** Bill Cipher. Don't let his laid-back sense of humor and strange design fool you; he's every bit as dangerous as his reputation would suggest.
** Soos, such as in "Soos and the Real Girl" and "Not What He Seems."
* BeyondTheImpossible /AlienGeometries: Several scenes in the episode "Fight Fighters", as well as the entire minisode "Lefty", could not take place in a 3D universe, and suggest that Gravity Falls's universe is 2D.
* BigBad: "Li'l" Gideon Gleeful, at least for Season 1.
** In Season 2, Bill Cipher is shaping up to be one, given his big role in Sock Opera and the [[spoiler: tapestry in the Northwest Mansion implies that he's planning on bringing upon the apocalypse.]]
* BiggerBad: Bill Cipher is and always has been the greatest threat of all.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Dipper constantly, ''constantly'' watches out for his sister's well being and safety. He doesn't smother her or anything, but whenever the two of them encounter danger, her safety is always his number one priority. [[http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/820/947/629.png This tumblr post]] really sums it up best.
** And even in less dire moments, like when she needs emotional or moral support, he's always there to lend her a hand and will stop at nothing until she feels better. For example, in "The Land Before Swine", when Dipper finds out that the pterodactyl took Waddles, he is dead-set on helping his sister get her beloved pet back.
** Mabel also has had several instances of [[BigBrotherInstinct Big Sister Instinct]]. In fact, her brother being threatened or hurt is one of the few things that manage to bring out her [[LetsGetDangerous more serious side]]. For the record, Mabel is older by five minutes.
** Soos also seems to have a bit of this for the twins, despite not being an actual relative.
* TheBigDamnKiss: Between [[spoiler: Mabel and Mermando]].
* BigEater: Whenever Soos isn't helping the twins or working on the Mystery Shack, he tends to stuff his face.
* BigFun: Soos is a big, funny ManChild whose great friends with the kids.
* BigNo: There are three in a row in "Carpet Diem": on from Mabel, one from Dipper, and one from Soos.
* BigScrewedUpFamily:
** While not exactly "big", Gideon's relationship with his parents is very, very, ''very'' messed up.
** [[spoiler: The Northwest family, going back to Nathaniel has been a decades-long line of classist swindlers. Preston Northwest controls his own daughter through ''Pavlov-style conditioning'', and encourages her to act like a brat. Pacifica, however, appears to be growing out of this]].
* BigStupidDoodooHead: Mabel calls [[spoiler:the gnomes]] butt-faces. In fact, if Mabel insults someone, it'll usually be this trope.
* BilingualBonus: The spell Dipper does in "Dreamscaperers" is part actual Latin and part CanisLatinicus joke, and it can be roughly translated to: "See everything, Master the Mind! [[MyHovercraftIsFullOfEels Magnesium to man! Masterpiece!]] May you have your body! [[CanisLatinicus Ince]][[{{Inception}} ptus]] [[Creator/ChristopherNolan Nolan]] [[TakeThat Overratus]]! Master the Mind, Master The Mind, Master The Miiiiiiiind!"
** The spell ''Gideon'' uses (also in Latin) to release Bill Cipher, however, makes much more sense in English: "Triangle, I invoke you! I come to the defensive barrier of the mind! I will see the barrier destroyed!"
* BirdsOfAFeather: Soos and Melody, who [[spoiler:seem to be officially dating by the end of "Soos and the Real Girl]].
** [[spoiler:Robbie and Tambry, both gloomy and apathetic [[EmoTeen Emo Teens]]]] start dating in "The Love God".
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Li'l Gideon.
* BiteTheWaxTadpole: Product name "Pitt Cola" is a bit awkward to Swedes because "pitt" (spelled and pronounced that way) is a highly profane word for "penis" in their language. So it's essentially saying "Dick Cola", which make it more surprising that the translators haven't even bothered to censor it.
* BittersweetEnding: Few episodes have these like [[spoiler: "The Time Traveler's Pig," "Boyz Crazy," and "Into the Bunker." Interesting trend is that the main focus or the B-plot is on Wendy and Dipper's relationship.]]
* BlackComedy: Oh, you'd be surprised. The number of times death is referenced for comedy in this show is quite astounding for a bright and cuddly-looking Disney show, sometimes boosting it up to murder and ''[[SuicideAsComedy suicide]]'' when it wants to. Once season two came around, it became almost a guarantee that it will happen at least once an episode.
* BlackComedyBurst: Despite how consistently dark the show's comedy is, one moment definitely stands out among the rest: in the "Lefty" short from "Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained", the twins investigate a man who seems to only ever show his left side. And the end, it's revealed that this is because [[spoiler:he's actually a robot with his right half completely gone, and he's being operated by a bunch of small amoeba-like creatures. Upon realizing that their cover has been blown, they all immediately commit mass suicide ''on camera'' by shoving green pills down their throats. One of them even protests by saying that [[IHaveAFamily he has a family]], causing one of his comrads to tell him "You signed the oath!" and then shove the pill in for him.]] All of this was most likely PlayedForLaughs.
* BlackGalOnWhiteGuyDrama: [[spoiler:[[PlayingWithATrope Played with]] in "The Love God". Robbie and Tambry end up together, and the drama coming from Wendy's friends stems not from racial or social issues, but from long-seated emotions towards everyone else. At the end, the group is back together, and the interracial aspects aren't even brought up.]]
* BlandNameProduct: "Pitt" brand soda, possibly a parody of the real-life brand "Mr. Pibb". It's been sighted on a machine inside the haunted convenience store, and Dipper and Tyrone drink it at the end of "Double Dipper".
** Or, more likely, "Cott". Cott's is also almost immediately associated with orange-flavored pop, and what's the logo seen on a Pitt vending machine?
*** It's a peach. Pitt Cola is shown in almost every episode, and the Gravity Falls site say it's a peach flavored cola with an actual pit inside the can.
**** Fun fact: The soda is very probably named after the show director Joe Pitt, whose name you can find in the credits.
* BlindIdiotTranslation: In-universe, all the dialogue of Rumble [=McSkirmish=] and the "Fight Fighters" game. This is also played for laughs in "Soos and the Real Girl." The videogame Soos plays to learn how to interact with real women is the English translation of a game that was originally released in Japanese. It contains lines like:"Anthyding can Hadplen."
* BlondesAreEvil: Pacifica Northwest. [[spoiler: Subverted in season 2, where we find out she was being trained to act like this by her parents.]]
* BloodStainedLetter: The page in a mystical journal on how to summon the demon Bill Cipher is covered in blood, with the words "Do not summon at all costs" written directly in blood.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Rumble [=McSkirmish=] spends most of his time running around town and destroying everything in sight with his bare hands. It sounds sick until you remember that he's [[TheGameComeToLife a character in a fighting game come to life]].
** Bill Cipher is showing signs of this, though it's still hard to say.
* BlushSticker: Mabel and her friend Candy have permanent circles of pink on their cheeks.
* BodyHorror: Some surprisingly intense examples of this, particularly in season 2.
* BookcasePassage: Shown in "Tourist Trapped". Stan has a passage hidden behind his vending machine. Where does it lead to? [[spoiler: An underground research facility, where Stan has been holding Book #1 for years and has been waiting for Book #2 (retrieved after Gideon was arrested) and Book #3 (took it from Dipper when Dipper showed it to him). He needed them to summon something. What is it? No one knows... until season 2 premieres.]]
* BookEnds: The ending of "Tourist Trapped" (the pilot) shows Stan entering his secret vending machine passage, and [[spoiler: the ending of "Gideon Rises" (the season one finale) shows Stan entering his secret vending machine passage... revealing that he's been hunting the books for a while, and needs them to summon an ultimate power.]]
** Both episodes also climax with the twins [[spoiler:being pursued by a villain piloting a larger version of themselves.]]
* BottomlessPits: Featured, of course, in "Bottomless Pit".
* {{Bowdlerise}}: In "Into The Bunker", when Dipper and Wendy were caught in a "closet", Dipper and Wendy bumped into each other at one point after Wendy pulled a handle. However, in the original storyboard work, Dipper was going to stay with his face in her chest for a while, then pushing her away in desperate attempt to get out, embarrassed, fearing she would be mad at him. And of course, this being Disney Channel and an Y7-rated show, it was scrapped.
* BowtiesAreCool: In addition to the bowtie in Stan's regular ensemble, Quentin Trembley wears one, and Dipper and Wendy both don them in "Double Dipper".
** Bill Cipher wears a bowtie, and it is very cool. It can turn into a tv screen!
* BoyBand: Sev'ral Timez, an affectionate lampoon of 90's boy bands.
* BrainInAJar: The Mystery Shack has two, dressed in wigs. Apparently, one's a man and one's a woman.
* BrainlessBeauty: The beautiful but absolutely clueless members of Sev'ral Timez.
* BrainsAndBrawn: It's subtly portrayed, but Dipper is more inclined to planning and reading while Mabel is more of a girl of action.
** This trope also applies to anytime Dipper and Soos team up.
* BrawnHilda: Grenda. She even has a [[LarynxDissonance completely undisguised male voice actor]].
* BreatherEpisode: "The Land Before Swine", considering the episode that immediately follows.
** "The Golf War", which comes after the plot-heavy episodes "Scaryoke" and "Into the Bunker" and precedes "Sock Opera".
** "The Love God", as it comes after "Blendin's Game" and before "Northwest Mystery Noir", both {{WhamEpisode}}s.
* BrickJoke: In [[Recap/GravityFallsS1E2TheLegendOfTheGobblewonker Episode 2]], there's a CutawayGag of Grunkle Stan and the kids forging money, and he remarks that their Benjamin Franklin looks like a woman. [[Recap/GravityFallsS1E8IrrationalTreasure Several episodes later]] the twins find a repository of America's embarrassing secrets that includes a folder about which [[GenkiGirl Mabel]] remarks: [[spoiler:"Oh man, Benjamin Franklin secretly ''was'' a woman!"]]
*** It's also possible this was a reference to [[TruthInTelevision actual American history]]. In 1722, Benjamin Franklin, age 16, wrote several letters to the newspaper his brother James worked for under the fake alias of middle aged woman Silence Dogood. This was because James would never publish any of his works. TheMoreYouKnow.
** In "Double Dipper", Soos is the DJ for the party and needs a lightning sound effect for a punchline to one of his one-liners but can't find it on the soundboard. During the credits, we see him go over the entire soundboard and find the lightning on the very last key to which he cheerfully exclaims: "Found it!".
** Episode 11; "Little Dipper" has Mabel rant about an "invisible wizard" in their closet as a theory on how Dipper is suddenly a millimeter taller than her. Come episode 16; "Carpet Diem" and Grenda steps out of the same closet after an obviously intense sleep over, her face covered in kiss marks, stating "I don't know what I was kissing in there, but I have no regrets!"
* BrilliantButLazy: Wendy has proven to be ''very'' competent in physical combat, but she only shows it if she absolutely needs to.
* BrokenAesop:
** "Boyz Crazy" -- If you love someone, let them go [[spoiler: into the woods with no survival skills, where they'll almost certainly die]]. Possibly a SpoofAesop.
** "The Love God" -- Forcing two people to love each other to suit your own needs is wrong. But it's okay as long as everyone is happy about it.
* BrokenTears: [[spoiler:Mabel]], of all people, has a moment of this in "Not What He Seems". It's relatively brief, but seeing [[spoiler: the most cheerful character on the show]] have a breakdown like that is a pretty good sign that things have taken a turn for the worst.
* BrotherSisterTeam: Obviously.
* BuffySpeak: Mabel can slip into this, using phrases such as "hotty melty things" or "some kind of magicky thing."
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Quentin Trembley definitely qualifies as a "Bunny-Ears (or, No Pants, rather) President."
** Also Soos who, despite being quite peculiar and immature, is more than capable of fixing most mechanical problems and creating some genuinely impressive stuff.
* ButtMonkey: Dipper.
** Thompson, most definitely. It later comes to his advantage when, in a {{Crowning Moment of Awesome}}, he [[spoiler: gets his entire friend group to stop hating each other simply by making himself the object of ridicule. They laugh so much at his 'Butt-Monkeying' that they patch up their petty arguments.]]
-->[[spoiler: '''Thompson:''' All according to plan.]]
** Blendin Blandin, though [[spoiler:things do eventually turn out better for him.]]
** Toby Determined
* ButThouMust: Mabel pulls one on some guy with a note.
--> Do you like me?
--> Yes
--> Definitley
--> Absolutely
* TheCakeIsALie: Grunkle Stan attracts visitors to the re-opening of his wax museum by promising them free pizza. He then claims that this was a typo.
* TheCaligula: Quentin Trembley.
* CaligulasHorse: Quentin Trembly appointed a group of ''babies'' into the supreme court.
* CallBack: Crossed with FreezeFrameBonus, the four symbol code that Grunkle Stan types at the end of "Gideon Rises" was first seen in the first episode [[http://decodinggravityfalls.tumblr.com/post/26509096563 here]]
** In essence, Blendin Blandin's flashback appearances in "The Time Traveler's Pig" function as callbacks as he does appear in every scene depicted in the end credits.
** Mabel makes Grunkle Stan sing the "Stan Wrong Song" in "Boss Mabel." In the "Mabel's Guide to Fashion" short, we hear him sing it again, but this time willingly for some reason.
* CallingYourAttacks: "SUPER POWER NINJA TURBO NEO ULTRA HYPER MEGA MULTI ALPHA META EXTRA UBER PREFIX COMBO!!"
--->'''Rumble:''' BOWL OF ''PUNCH''!!
** And in a flashback of Stan's
---> LEFT HOOK! *Wham!*
* CampStraight: Gideon's speech and mannerisms are ''very'' similar to that of a SouthernBelle stereotype, not to mention he's very conscious about his looks and is often drawn with [[TertiarySexualCharacteristics visible eyelashes]]. However, considering his [[{{Yandere}} obsession with Mabel]], he's pretty clearly straight.
* CanisLatinicus: Downplayed in "Dreamscaperers." The spell Gideon uses is actual Latin, and most of Dipper's spell is, too. However, "Inceptus Nolan Overratus!" from the latter is a case of this. (As well as a TakeThat at {{Inception}}.)
* CannotTalkToWomen: Soos is hilariously inept at flirting.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: "Heavy is the head that wears the fez."
* ChairReveal: Gideon does one in "The Hand That Rocks the Mabel".
** Also, Mabel does one in "Boss Mabel".
* CaptainErsatz: "Gummy Chairs" "Sand Pops" and "Mr Adequate Bar." are candies that both Mabel and Dipper are disappointed to get during summerween so they throw them out only to ultimately discover that [[spoiler:It hated being thrown out so much that it became sentient and seeks revenge every summerween.]] Does it rot their teeth so they can't eat candy anymore? No. Does it force them to eat candy till the end of time? No. instead [[spoiler:It wants to eat them alive.]]. Talk about DisproportionateRetribution.
* CerebusSyndrome: While still primarily a comedy, the show did get noticeably darker in its second season, possibly due to its ChannelHop. Even the humor became significantly more reliant on BlackComedy than it was before.
* CerebusRetcon: ''Society Of The Blind Eye'' implies heavily that the CloudCuckooLander tendencies of most citizens of Gravity Falls are [[spoiler: a result of brain damage from the mind eraser gun used by the Society of the Blind Eye to make them forget the supernatural. ''Ouch''.]]
** In the same episode, it's revealed that [[spoiler: Old Man [=McGucket=] is both the inventor of the mind eraser gun, and drove himself to insanity by using it repeatedly to forget some horrible thing he learned working with The Author.]]
** [[spoiler:The known Society members' various quirks, from Bud's cheerful obliviousness of his dysfunctional son to Toby Determined's unrequited love for Shandra Jimenez to even the carnival barker's paranoid fear of witches, suddenly become much darker in hindsight when it's learned they've all been trying to erase these sources of pain from their lives]].
** ''Northwest Mansion Noir/Mystery'' heavily implies Pacifica's parents (previously shown to be somewhat aloof and distant) to be outright emotionally abusive, including training Pacifica to respond to a bell, and that [[spoiler:the whole Northwest family is a line of [[CardCarryingVillain Card Carrying Villain]]s]].
* CheerfulChild: Mabel. Given the nature of the series, this can verge on [[ThePollyanna Pollyanna]] status at times.
* ChekhovsGag: In "Into the Bunker", the Shapeshifter takes the form of a terrified Dipper as he freezes, claiming it will be his last pose before dying. [[spoiler: When Dipper is turned into wood in "Northwest Mansion Noir", guess what pose he's doing?]]
* ChekhovsGun: The leafblower Mabel used for kissing practice is later used to [[spoiler: fight the gnomes]].
** The grappling hook that Mabel got in the ''very first episode'' [[spoiler: saves the twins from falling to their doom in the season one finale.]]
** Stan claims that nobody ever made any money using the word "please" in "Boss Mabel". When he has a chance later to win three hundred thousand dollars on ''Cash Wheel'', he chooses instead to go for double the money by trying (and failing) to answer one last question: "What is a six-letter word you use to ask for something politely?"[[note]]"'Gimmee'! Two e's."[[/note]]
** A literal gun example: In "Time Traveler's Pig", Stan rigs his dunk tank to resist any attempts to dunk him to which Soos replies it would take "some kind of futuristic laser ArmCannon." [[spoiler:Guess the time police hands out those as standard issue!]]
* ChekhovsGunman: Of course, [[CrazyAwesome Bill Cipher.]] He was frequently shown in the credits up until his official debut in "Dreamscaperers".
** Early on in the episode "Soos and the Real Girl", when they visit a mall to look for a date for Soos, you can see Melody (the girl Soos later dates) working at a meat stand.
* ChekhovsSkill: [[spoiler: Dipper saves the day by leaping a good distance off a cliff's ledge in Gideon Rises. Pretty cool, but it's especially satisfying to rewatch Dipper vs Manliness and see him practicing and progressing his leaping across cliffs skill during the training montage]].
* ChekhovsHobby: Dipper's "Lamby Dance" skill.
** Mabel's mini-golf skills are introduced in the Season 1 episode "Carpet Diem" and then come back as a plot point in the Season 2 episode "Golf War".
* CheshireCatGrin: [[spoiler:When Dipper is possessed by Bill, he almost ''never'' stops pulling one of these]]. [[http://gravityfalls.wikia.com/wiki/File:S2e4_bill%27s_new_body.png Behold]].
* ChestBurster: Stan has Waddles perform one in an attempt to scare two kids in "Summerween." Later, Soos also does one, out of [[spoiler: the Summerween Trickster]].
* ChildEater: The Summerween Trickster.
* ChristmasInJuly: Halloween in June
* CityOfAdventure
* CityOfWeirdos: {{Deconstructed}}, as it's revealed in "Society of the Blind Eye" that [[spoiler:everybody is being given systematic LaserGuidedAmnesia.]]
* ClassicalAntiHero: Most of the main characters are awkward in some way or form, but Dipper in particular really fits the bill.
* ClassicCheatCode: Ultimate Power! in "Fight Fighters".
* {{Cliffhanger}}: The "Dreamscaperers", "Gideon Rises", and "Not What He Seems".
* CloningBlues: The concept and many of its subtropes are largely {{averted}}, {{lampshaded}}, {{invoked}} and {{subverted}} during "Double Dipper".
** Rather than feeling resentful to the original for putting himself above them or trying to take over, the army of Dipper clones are in sync with the original - to the point where they have the same ideas and thoughts at the same time and tend to get along. They have no problem with helping Dipper fulfill his plan even though they won't be benefiting from it, since they're ''also'' Dipper and thus agree with the plan in the way he thought of it. It works out fine [[spoiler:until Dipper has an epiphany they didn't and decides he doesn't want to follow the plan any more.]]
** They [[ClonesAreExpendable are aware that they are expendable]] and don't seem to mind - #2 is even reassuringly points out before the plot happens that if they do go nuts Dipper can just get rid of them easy using water - and they treat being disintegrated as more of an inconvenience than anything.
*** It's worth noting that #2 (or Tyrone) points out how easy Dipper can get rid of them in response to [[DiscussedTrope Dipper wondering whether the]] clones [[TurnedAgainstTheirMasters might become jealous of him and try to destroy him,]] which [[DefiedTrope Tyrone dismisses]]. [[spoiler:Even when the clones do turn against him, it's more because they think he's messing up his own plans and decide to do them for him. They're also very nice about it.]]
** They avert KillAndReplace, [[spoiler:even when they briefly revolt against Dipper. At no point do they even think of replacing the original Dipper for more than a few minutes, and make sure he's comfortable while they do so.]]
** In "Boyz Crazy", it turns out all the singers in Sev'Ral Timez are clone lab rats.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Quentin Trembley. Full stop. Mabel, Old Man [=McGucket=], Soos and possibly Stan count as well.
** Actually, most people from Gravity Falls count as cloudcuckoolanders.
* CloudCuckoolandersMinder: Dipper to Mabel, [[NotSoAboveItAll most of the time]].
* CluelessDeputy: Deputy Durland.
* CollectorOfTheStrange: Grunkle Stan sure heaped together a whole hodgepodge of oddities when he created the Mystery Shack.
* ComicalOverreacting: A somewhat common joke on the show. For example, when Mabel and her friends find out a concert they want to go to is sold out:
-->'''Grenda:''' This night is ruined!
-->(Candy falls flat on her face)
-->'''Candy:''' I welcome you, death.
* ComingOfAgeStory: Several of Dipper's experiences in Gravity Falls include learning about himself, defending a first crush, and boldly standing up for what is right; all elements of this trope.
* ConArtist: Grunkle Stan.
* ConfusingMultipleNegatives: The song "Don't Start Un-Believing" the lyrics of which include "don't start un-believing / never don't not feel your feelings."
* ConspicuousCG: All the vehicles are rendered in CG, and so is the water in certain shots from the second episode.
** The [[spoiler:[[HumongousMecha giant Gideon robot]] is rendered in CGI in some shots, though with shading touches that don't really make it a problem. Otherwise, he's drawn traditionally]].
* ConspicuouslyLightPatch: The bowling shoes in [[http://i.imgur.com/cEW4qAs.png this]] shot.
* ConspiracyTheorist: Dipper. Considering where he lives, it's quite understandable.
* ContinuityCavalcade:
** "Scaryoke", since it's the Season 2 premier, has a noticeably high number of references to previous episodes.
** In "Into The Bunker", The Shapeshifter takes forms of previous antagonists of Season 1.
** In "Sock Opera", Bill Cipher tries to persuade Dipper into [[DealWithTheDevil making a deal with him]] that will effect Mabel's efforts, stating "What has she ever done to return the favor?" whilst showing flashbacks of his sacrifices in Season 1.
** Both of the [[TimeTravelEpisode Time Travel Episodes]], "The Time Traveler's Pig" and "Blendin's Game".
** In "The Love God", the titular character entices Mabel with a love illusion potion, which shows all of Mabel's ex-crushes from previous episodes, like Mermando ("The Deep End") and Gabe ("Sock Opera").
* ContinuityNod: Besides the MythArc hints, there's the time when Dipper asks Mabel if they've got any pictures of the gnomes they saw the first episode and Dipper apologizing to Toby Determined for accusing him of murder in "Headhunters".
** The "S" on the Mystery Shack sign was knocked off in "Headhunters". It has since yet to be fixed and appears broken in every following episode.
** Mabel shows her scrapbook in "Dipper vs Manliness". You can see that it has a picture of the [[spoiler:beheaded wax Stan]] from "Headhunters".
** In the episode "The Time Traveler's Pig", the pilot of the wagon on the Oregon Trail exclaims "By Trembley!"
*** In "The Time Traveler's Pig", the show has a moment for all the previous episodes.
** In "Carpet Diem", Waddles can be seen wearing the top hat Quentin Trembly gave to Mabel.
** In "Boyz Crazy", Dipper sees Mabel dancing happily and comments about if she ate Smile-Dip again.
** In "Irrational Treasure", Mabel comments that she doubts Deputy Durland can read. In "Bottomless Pit" Durland asks Stan to teach him to read.
** In the online game "Mystery Shack Mystery", one of the codes is EVER SEEN STAN'S TATTOO? Indeed, he has one, but only a small portion of it is ever seen. In "Dreamscaperers", when Bill remembers Stan Pines, a full picture of his tattoo is shown.
*** One of the Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained shorts focuses on the kids trying to see his tattoo, and we even get another continuity nod in the short when we see Dipper's forehead and birthmark again for the first time since Double Dipper.
** The "Fixin' It with Soos" shorts show that Soos is still living in the now cleaned-up extra room that Dipper and Mabel found in "Carpet Diem".
** In "Sock Opera", upon seeing [[GuyOfTheWeek Gabe]], Mabel comments that she was just getting over Mermando, her previous crush and the one she shared her FirstKiss with in "The Deep End". Dipper, unimpressed, responds with saying that he didn't care for him (obviously still embarrassed over the Reverse CPR incident).
*** Also in that episode, Bill Cipher appears and they have a tense (on Dipper's part) conversation about the last time they met, with Dipper referring to Bill trying "to destroy his uncle's mind" in "Dreamscaperers". Bill also comments "You missed me. Admit it, you missed me!"
*** Later on, Bill shows flashbacks of previous episodes in season 1 when he tries to persuade Dipper into [[DealWithTheDevil making a deal with him.]] Doubles as a ContinuityCavalcade.
*** Also, the laptop that Soos found at the end of "Into the Bunker" has a major plot point in this episode.
** In "Into The Bunker", Dipper remarks that zombie movies are a lot less scary when you've fought actual zombies, a reference to the previous episode.
*** Wendy says towards the end that if Dipper ever stopped being her friend, she would "throw herself into the Bottomless Pit", referring to the Season 1 episode "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Bottomless Pit]]".
** In "Soos and the Real Girl" [[spoiler: Dipper says that bringing a videogame character to life can bring nothing but trouble, citing his own experience with Rumble [=McSkirmish=]. Rumble himself has a cameo in the same episode.]]
*** In the same episode, when Soos is flirting with a girl who's eating meat, he mentions to her that he was "[[Recap/GravityFallsS1E16CarpetDiem once a pig]]".
** In "Society of The Blind Eye", Mabel's previous crushes are mentioned several times (like Mermando from "The Deep End" and Gabe from "Sock Opera"), as she wants to erase the memories of all her romantic failures during the course of the summer.
*** Also, since [[spoiler: they took down the titular society, whose purpose was to erase the memories of the normal residents to make them unaware of the town's paranormal phenomenon]], the people have been prone to notice the supernatural more often, like Dipper fending off a vampire bat being the headline in "Northwest Mansion Noir".]]
** In "Blendin's Game", Blendin Blandin returns to have revenge on Dipper and Mabel for what they did to him in "Time Traveler's Pig".
** Look closely at Grunkle Stan's hand in "Blendin's Game" and "The Love God". He's still wearing the bandage seen in the credits from "Society of the Blind Eye".
** At the end of "Northwest Mansion Noir", [=McGucket=] is shown to have become a bit more down to Earth since having his memories back in "Society of the Blind Eye". He also mentions "having fixed the laptop", which was found in "Into the Bunker" and destroyed by Bill (in Dipper's body) in "Sock Opera".
*** Pacifica feels bad for her ancestors' crimes, and that includes the Gravity Falls "founder" (discovered by Dipper and Mabel to be a fraud in "Irrational Treasure") who is frequently shown through paintings in this episode.
*** When Pacifica asks Dipper for help, he is sceptical at first because she has been "trying to humiliate him and Mabel before", ("Double Dipper", "Irrational Treasure" and "The Golf War")
* ContinuityPorn: The show is known for having extremely strong continuity. Almost every plot thread that's thrown into the air has to come down eventually.
** "[[Recap/GravityFallsS1E9TheTimeTravelersPig The Time Traveler's Pig]]" anybody?
** And then in "Dreamscaperers", when clips of Stan from various episodes are all on display in his mind.
* ConvenientlyTimedDistraction: In "Not What He Seems", when Stan needs to escape from the agents in the police station, a gravity anomaly occurs which Stan takes advantage of to help him escape.
* CoolBoat: Soos' "S.S. Cool Dude." Averted with the Stan-O-War.
-->'''Soos''': Dude, you could totally use my boat for your hunt! It's got a steering wheel, chairs; normal boat stuff.
* CoolOldGuy: Grunkle Stan.
* CosmicHorrorStory: Things seem to be leaning in this direction, what with [[BiggerBad Bill]] [[EldritchAbomination Cipher]] finally on the scene. His motivations, plans, and the true extent of his powers are still vague or entirely left unsaid, but there's no doubt at all that he's by ''far'' the most powerful being in Gravity Falls, if not the entire world or universe.
* CrappyCarnival: In "The Time Traveler's Pig." Stan spared every expense.
* CrazyCatLady: Lazy Susan.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Lil' Gideon to Mabel
* CrazyPrepared: Dipper brings 17 disposable cameras for a monster hunt in episode 2. This is because he's Genre Savvy enough to realize that cameras keep getting destroyed or lost during monster hunts.
* CreatorCameo: Alex Hirsch provides the voice for Grunkle Stan, Soos, Old Man [=McGucket=], Bill Cipher, Jeff the Gnome, Quentin Trembley, and Paper Jam Dipper.

* CreepyChild: Li'l Gideon, definitely.
* CrossoverPunchline: This video [[http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=821TmxO95iE]] teases a minor crossover with ''WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty''.
* CurbStompBattle: Between Dipper and Rumble [=McSkirmish=].
* CursedWithAwesome: The fact that a dating simulation is alive in "Soos and The Real Girl", [[spoiler: aside the fact that she's a crazy {{Yandere}} of course]], could sound quite interesting and exciting for players who are lonely. Not only would she be a cute anime girl you would be able to talk to like a normal person, but there would be possible VideoGamePerversityPotential as well...
* CutASliceTakeTheRest: How Mabel eats Smile Dip.
* CutawayGag: Occasionally appears in some episodes. Some usually foreshadow the events of the episode.
* CuteAndPsycho: Li'l Gideon.
* CuteBruiser: Mabel.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Bill Cipher. Not only was this guy able to trick [[spoiler: Dipper, the smartest, most GenreSavvy character on the show]], into making a DealWithTheDevil, but he was able to do it without even ''trying'' that hard. No force or bold-faced lies were required, all he did was use his ''[[ExactWords words]]''.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Than [[Series/{{Jessie}} pretty]] [[Series/LivAndMaddie much]] [[Series/AustinAndAlly every]] [[Series/IDidntDoIt other]] [[Series/DogWithABlog current]] [[WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb Disney Channel]] [[Series/GirlMeetsWorld show]], frequently using the terms "killed" and "died", and Gideon [[spoiler:trying to cut out Dipper's tongue in Episode 4]] is likely something you won't be seeing on most of them anytime soon.
** One episode even had [[spoiler:live wax statues ''trying to chop off Grunkle Stan's head'' (not to worry, though: they only succeeded in decapitating his wax figure instead).]]
** In "Fight Fighters" Grunkle Stan reveals that he owns ten guns, specifically to [[ItMakesSenseInContext shoot anyone who tried to sneak a ladder into his house]].
** Not to mention that in the episode "Gideon Rises", Dipper is shown with a [[spoiler: nose bleed from the giant Gideon-Bot chase scene. This is the first occurance of seeing someone visibly bleed in the show, and blood itself is pretty rare for a Disney show.]]
** In "Dreamscaperers", it's shown that Book 3's entry on Bill Cipher is ''covered in blood.'' How ''did'' this show make it onto Disney, anyway?
** Season 2 appears to be shaping up as this. The first episode centers around what Dipper believes is a zombie that was eventually revealed as [[spoiler: a clan of gnomes [[TotemPoleTrench on top of each other.]] "Scary-oke" features Dipper summoning REAL zombies.]]
** Into the Bunker. [[spoiler: Experiment 210 [[VoluntaryShapeshifting shapeshifts]] into various [[EldritchAbomination Eldritch Abominations]]; in one particular instance it taunts the twins by shifting into Mabel, then Dipper, then shapeshifts into them ''both'' as a nightmareish monstrosity.]]
*** Later, the Experiment disguises itself as [[spoiler: Wendy, and Dipper buries an axe into 210!Wendy's abdomen, with ''no GoryDiscretionShot.'']]
** In Sock Opera, when [[spoiler:Bill possesses Dipper's body, he finds causing himself pain hilarious. It's mostly PlayedForLaughs, but the sight of Bipper repeatedly slamming a drawer on his own hand and impaling it with two forks in the process all while wearing a manic grin is...disturbing.]]
** Not What He Seems features a more mundane threat than most earlier episodes, but one that is arguably more horrifying for that reason. When Dipper and Mabel first discover [[spoiler: that the man they've been living with throughout the summer has been lying about his identity, coupled with not too subtle hints that he ''killed'' the real Stan, their horror and that of the audience is dramatically greater than when they face any of the supernatural threats that they regularly have to deal with]]. The anger, sadness, and [[spoiler:betrayal]] that the main characters feel is palpable throughout the rest of the episode, and [[spoiler:even though it's ultimately revealed that Stan really is their great uncle (just not the one that they thought) and that he loves both them and his brother (the other Stan) greatly, the premise alone is enough to make this episode the darkest in the series]].
* DartboardOfHate: The Gleeful house contains one with a picture of Stan.
** In "Gideon Rises", after Stan reveals that [[spoiler: Gideon has been monotoring everyone via camera]], there's a [[FreezeFrameBonus blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment]] in which one of the screens shows Pacifica shooting darts onto a picture of Mabel.
** Robbie has one of Dipper.
* DeadpanSnarker: Grunkle Stan. Dipper has his moments as well.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: [[spoiler:The real Stan Pines has been dead for thirty years.]] We know little else besides this, however, due to the episode ending on a CliffHanger.
* DealWithTheDevil: In "Sock Opera", Dipper begrudgingly makes a deal with Bill Cipher since he knows the password to the laptop (which is about to erase data in a short amount of time because of many failed password entries), in exchange that Bill will have a puppet. [[spoiler: The thing is, [[DemonicPossession he wanted]] [[AndIMustScream Dipper as his puppet]].]]
* DeliberatelyMonochrome: Played with in Episode 8. Dipper holds up a postcard of the town square, then lowers it to a sepia-toned town square. He was really just looking through some very dirty glass that was being carried across the street.
* DemonicPossession: So far, this has happened twice. First with [[spoiler:Mabel]], who gets possessed by a pair of ghosts in "The Inconveniencing". Then taken [[DealWithTheDevil more literally]] in "Sock Opera", where [[spoiler:Dipper]] is tricked into allowing [[spoiler:Bill Cipher]] to possess him. The second example also crosses over with GrandTheftMe, as [[spoiler:Dipper's]] soul is forcibly ripped out of his body in the process.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: The "Rock That Looks Like a Face" Rock: The Rock That Looks Like A Face.
** Also, "Fight Fighters".
* DependingOnTheWriter: There seems to be come disagreement among the writers on Soos's relationship with Stan: he either [[ParentalSubstitute looks up to him as a father figure]], or he has some kind of [[HoYay awkward, half-formed crush on him]].
* DetectivesFollowFootprints: How Dipper and Mabel found [[spoiler: the axe]] in "Headhunters."
* DisappearedDad: [[spoiler:Soos's father]] walked out on him when he was a kid.
* DisproportionateRetribution: PlayedForLaughs with [[spoiler: Old Man [=McGucket=]'s giant robots]], but a much darker example occurs when Gideon's response to Dipper breaking up with him in Mabel's stead is to [[spoiler: use his telekinetic powers to try to cut out his tongue]].
* DistinguishingMark: The Big Dipper-shaped birthmark on Dipper's forehead.
* DitzyGenius: Soos is actually quite smart, with competent knowledge of machinery and construction, and many nuggets of wisdom to give to the other characters. [[ManChild You would]] ''[[ManChild never]]'' [[ManChild guess this based on how he acts.]]
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: In a way that is darker than usual for this trope. "Society of the Blind Eye" features [[spoiler: a society that protects people from the supernatural phenomena of Gravity Falls or other horrible experiences by erasing their memories, which could be easily interpreted as an analogy on how people use drugs like ecstasy to make them "feel better". Not to mention that the memory wipes are heavily implied to cause ''brain damage''.]]
* DoggedNiceGuy: Gideon is a [[DeconstructedTrope deconstruction]] of this trope. He is devoted to Mabel but she just wants to be friends, and in-universe everyone seems to think that his attempts to win her over are charming...but the truth is, Gideon is an AxCrazy, EntitledBastard who uses emotional manipulation to trap Mabel into a relationship. He performs over-the-top acts of kindness, manipulates her into going into more dates with him by asking her very publicly in front of large crowds of Gravity Falls citizens who think it's just ''so adorable'' that Gideon might finally get a girlfriend, and completely ignores her wish to not be in a relationship with him. Eventually, Dipper tries to break the news that Mabel is not interested in Gideon to him, and Gideon responds to this by attempting to ''murder'' Dipper because he believes that Dipper got in between him and Mabel. Thankfully, Mabel sees this and intervenes, and she rejects him, not only romantically, but as a friend now, too.
--> '''Mabel:''' ''(after rejecting Gideon again)'' But we can still be makeover buddies, right? Wouldn't you like that?
--> '''Gideon:''' Really?
--> '''Mabel:''' ''(rips amulet away from Gideon)'' No, not really! You are like attacking my brother, what the heck!
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: "Society of the Blind Eye" reveals that [[spoiler: background characters Toby Determined, Bud Gleeful, farmer Sprott, the burly man who guards the Skull Fracture, the man married to a woodpecker and a random woman are members of a secret society that make the inhabitants forget of the paranormal activities they encountered. Subverted with the leader who has never been seen before.]]
* DontExplainTheJoke: In "The Legend of the Gobblewonker," when trying to recruit fishing buddies, Stan interrupts a man about to propose to his girlfriend with this joke: "My ex-wife still misses me, but her aim is getting better!" After repeating the punchline, he explains, "It's funny because marriage is terrible."
* DotingParent: Bud Gleeful.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Averted in "Soos and the Real Girl", where [[spoiler:Giffany's attempts to control, manipulate, and eventually abduct Soos]] are depicted as horrible and disturbing.
* DoubleTake: The phrase "Wait, what?" shows up quite often on the show.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler:"Dreamscaperers"]]
* DreamWalker: Bill Cipher
* DrunkOnMilk: Subverted in "Gideon Rises", where Stan briefly tries to get drunk on very expired apple cider. Apple cider ferments with age, the audience just [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar isn't directly told this]].
** Played straight when Grenda drinks expired milk, saying that "I can see rainbows!" Then she passes out.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Grunkle Stan
--> '''Stan:''' "Road safety laws, prepare to be ignored!"
* DysfunctionJunction: As of Season 2, the whole cast is starting to become this. And in a ''Disney'' show of all places!
** Dipper is a shy, insecure, pre-pubescent kid who's nervous about his body and attempts to mask it by being TheSmartGuy in the group. May also be a borderline NightmareFetishist with his fascination with the paranormal.
** Mabel is, well, Mabel, and she most likely has a form of ADHD. Also, in one episode, when she lost [[TeamPet Waddles]], she became '''incredibly and agonizingly''' depressed to the point she seemed to have lost the will to live!
** Stan is practically a kleptomaniac who enjoys being hated, [[spoiler: not to mention his cloudy past and his murky history with the weird in Gravity Falls.]]
** Wendy acts cool, but in "Society of the Blind Eye" she stated that she is always really anxious and nervous all the time.
** Soos [[ParentalAbandonment had never even met his father,]] and after several years of having his father-come-home-birthday-present not happen, he grew to dislike celebrating his birthday.
** [[spoiler: Even '''[[AlphaBitch Pacifica]]''' falls under this this, having grown up and being ''conditioned like a dog'' to always obey her parents at the sound of a bell, and she is terrified of ever disobeying them.]] And these are just the ''main characters.''.
** One guy [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking married a woodpecker]].
* DudeNotFunny: In an InUniverse example from "Society of the Blind Eye", Soos enrages Mabel and Wendy when he makes a joke about Lazy Susan's mascara.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Lazy Susan appears in the diner for a moment in the pilot, and isn't formally introduced until five episodes later.
** A picture of Robbie can be seen posted on the bulletin board among the other suspects in "Headhunters".
** Li'l Gideon is featured in a magazine advertisement two episodes before Dipper and Mabel actually meet him.
** Mr. Poolcheck appears in the Skull Fracture bar an episode before he is introduced in "The Deep End".
** The band Sev'ral Timez' movie appears in "Carpet Diem".
** Bill Cipher appears on an arcade game's screen in the cold open of "Fight Fighters." His body is colored green rather than its normal yellow, but image is clearly Bill.
*** [[spoiler: Bill appears for [[FreezeFrameBonus a brief moment at in the intro]], and triangles with a single eye have appear throughout the show.]]
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The first episode was narrated by Dipper and ended with him writing in the journal, kind of like an episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Doug}}.'' After that, the narrations seem to have been dropped.
* EarthShatteringKaboom: [[spoiler:Stan's portal device]] is revealed to have the capacity to do this in "Not What He Seems". [[spoiler:It doesn't, but it comes awfully close]].
* {{Earworm}}: It's mentioned in-universe that the songs of Sev'ral Timez are quite catchy. A rap song that Soos enjoys is also stated to be a serious earworm, and Wendy comes close to using a memory-erasing device to get rid of it.
* EasterEgg: The messages in the credits at the end of every episode. To decode them, you have to send each letter "three letters back", as explained when the intro is played backwards. JHW WKH SLFWXUH?
** Episode 7 onwards uses the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atbash Atbash cipher]]. YV HFIV GL PVVK FKWZGVW.
** Speaking of backwards messages, in "Dreamscaperers", Gideon's chant to [[spoiler:summon Bill Cipher]] might sound like gibberish, but when played backwards, it reveals a secret: [[spoiler: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMy2r81gMXU Gideon is saying "Backwards Message" backwards]].]]
** Smaller secret messages appear during the show. For example: the binary code that appears diring Giffany's flashback in "Soos and the Real Girl" translates to "[[Film/SpaceJam SPACEJAMTWO]]".
* EatenAlive: In "The Land Before Swine", Old Man [=McGucket=] is eaten by a pterodactyl.
** Both Soos and Gorney are eaten alive in "Summerween".
--> '''Gorney:''' I've been ''[[ElmuhFuddSyndwome twaumatized!]]''
** SwallowedWhole
* ElaborateUndergroundBase: [[spoiler: Stan has one under the Shack.]]
** [[spoiler: The Author of the Journals has what looks to be an even bigger one under the tree where Dipper first found 3.]]
* EldritchAbomination: The Time Baby, especially if you've read the document explaining what it is.
** Bill Cipher.
** [[spoiler: Experiment 210]]
* EleventyZillion: Mabel, while high on [[GRatedDrug Smile Dip]], responds to Dipper's question of how many packs she's had with "Bleventeen".
* EmbarrassingFirstName: According to Jeffrey Rowe (a writer for the series) Dippers first name is Llamanic due to a "tragic" misspelling of Dominic.
* EmbarrassingMiddleName: Robbie's middle name is revealed in "The Love God".
--> '''Mrs. Valentino:''' Robbie ''[[GenderBlenderName Stacey]]'' Valentino! There's a little girl here to see you!
* EmoTeen: Robbie.
* EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: [[spoiler:'''Very''' narrowly averted in "Not What He Seems". And we don't yet know if we've seen end of it either.]]
* EnemyMine: In "Northwest Mansion Mystery" Pacifica asks Dipper for help when a Lumberjack Ghost wants her and her family dead. Dipper of course, is suspicious, because he knows how terrible Pacifica has been towards him and Mabel. Despite his protests, and with Mabel's urging, Dipper agreed and decided to see the job through, hoping to get Pacifica off his back. Dipper's suspicion was eventually vindicated, since [[spoiler:the entire plot was a ploy by the Northwests to cover up their own treachery, [[ForTheEvulz just so they can continue to deny commonfolk access to their annual party]]. Disgusted by this revelation, it end his truce with Pacifica. However, Dipper ''later'' finds out that it wasn't Pacifica, but rather, her father who used and tricked him. Upon seeing how regretful and horrified Pacifica is at her family's lying, backstabbing ways, he decides to give her a second chance]].
* EnfantTerrible: Lil' Gideon
** The Time Baby, probably.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Gideon Gleeful, the [[EnfantTerrible nine-year-old]] whose hobbies include abusing his parents, summoning demons, and murder via oral mutilation, was legitimately disturbed by the actions of [[OurDemonsAreDifferent Bill]] [[EldritchAbomination Cipher]]. Not because he was morally opposed to them, but because he just found them ''that'' [[KickTheDog sporadic and outlandish]].
* EverybodyLaughsEnding: In "Summerween." See EvilLaugh below.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: The credits only refer to Tyler as "Cute Biker".
* EveryoneHasStandards: Several characters on the show have had moments of this.
** Mabel is a [[CloudCuckooLander hyperactive goofball]] who seems to takes every opportunity to do whatever strange thing comes into her head. But in "Sock Opera", when she found out her [[GirlOfTheWeek crush of the week]] was so obsessed with puppets he sometimes ''makes out'' with them, even she considers it just a step too weird.
** Robbie is a complete JerkAss who houses a serious dislike for Dipper for having a crush on Wendy, his [[spoiler:at the time]] girlfriend. But, when presented with an unresistant opportunity to give Dipper a beating, [[WouldntHurtAChild he can't bring himself to go through with it]].
** This exchange in "Soos and the Real Girl":
-->'''Stan (Referring to dating):''' Soos, a little advice. You need to get rich. Or lie about being rich. Outside of that, I don't like your chances.
-->'''Wendy:''' Pssh, don't listen to Stan, dude. You're a sweet guy with a steady job and a pickup truck.
-->'''Stan:''' Would ''you'' date him?
-->'''Wendy:''' Oh, would I, uh... heh, look at that.
-->(She hides her face in a magazine called "[[LampshadeHanging Avoid Eye Contact Monthly]]").
* EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs: In "The Land Before Swine"
* EverythingsBetterWithLlamas: Mabel's llama-hair sweater.
* EvilIsHammy: Bill Cipher, so, so much. His voice is loud and unnatural, his lines are strange and sporadic, and his voice pattern is just as unpredictable as he is. One minute he could be talking to you normally, the next he's SuddenlyShouting [[VoiceOfTheLegion in a demonically deep tone]].
** Gideon isn't exactly a subtle fellow either.
* EvilIsPetty[=/=]PokeThePoodle: Gideon returns in "Irrational Treasure". Not to carry out an evil revenge scheme on the Pines, but to taunt Stan while the latter was in stocks.
** Gideon fights with Stan over a pool chair in "The Deep End".
* EvilLaugh: Stan, Dipper, Mabel, Wendy, Soos, Grenda and Candy indulge in one in Episode 12 after Stan's WarpedAesop.
** Bill Cipher is [[LaughingMad very]] prone to this.
* EvilOldFolks: [[spoiler:Ma and Pa, the ghost owners of the Dusk-2-Dawn convenience store]].
* {{Expy}}: [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120924221442/gravityfalls/images/b/ba/Tumblr_mauawtXCJN1rd63jho1_500.png The Summerween]] [[http://images3.cliqueclack.com/p/wp-content/blogs.dir/8/files/2012/10/gravity-falls-no-face-2.png Trickster]] closely resembles [[http://i.imgur.com/01Zxk.png Noh-Face]] from ''Anime/SpiritedAway''.
** The Shapeshifter in "Into the Bunker" directly resembles the monster from ''Film/TheThing1982''.
** The character of Bud Gleeful (a relentlessly cheerful, portly car dealership owner in a T-shirt and shorts) was directly inspired by "The Family Man", the star of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X03iP0Uhmck a bizarre series of local Florida commercials]] Hirsch once saw while on vacation.
** Gideon Gleeful's appearance is almost a dead ringer for 1950s child preacher [[http://40.media.tumblr.com/29679f714116fb3853a951610307a129/tumblr_mrmr13thbs1qapkmyo1_500.jpg Larry Larimore]].
* TheExitIsThatWay: Simultaneously {{lampshaded}} and {{Averted}} in "The Hand That Rocks The Mabel":
-->''(Grunkle Stan exits, slamming door behind him)''
-->'''Soos:''' Dude, wouldn't it be funny if that was a closet, and he had to come back out again and walk out the real door? ''(opens door and looks out)'' Nope, real door.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin and BribingYourWayToVictory: the "Insert Token!" machine at the arcade.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Implied when we see one of Mabel's drinks contain a strange cyclops Troll Doll and several dice, all in a green fluid.
** She also once ate a whole tube of toothpaste because "it was so sparkly".
** Old Man [=McGucket=] is even more so, having eaten such things as books and [[spoiler: a live pterodactyl]].
* EyeColourChange: Mabel's eyes turn green when she's had too much Smile Dip. Additionally, looking into the Gremloblin's eyes causes the eyes of two tourists to match the creature's bright yellow ones.
